‘Both Sides’ guy Chris Evans on the Capitol siege: ‘So many people enabled this’

U.S. Capitol shut down and members of Congress evacuated as thousands of pro-Trump protestors storm the U.S. Capitol.

In 2019, Chris Evans announced plans to launch a political-explainer website in which “both sides” would be shown and explained. He truly said “both sides.” A Starting Point was launched in 2020, and there are videos of Chris sitting down with various congressmen and political operatives as they explain how this or that works in government, or why certain issues are so contentious. As part of the website, Chris went to DC repeatedly, and he was often sought out by Republicans looking to get a photo-op with Captain America. As such, there are photos of Chris with douchebags like Ted Cruz and Dan Crenshaw.

As the Capitol was under siege yesterday, Chris was among the many celebrities chiming in online.

He also tweeted “I’m speechless” and “Just think of the carnage had they not been white.” But the “so many people” tweet was the one which irritated people, because for the past few years, Chris has absolutely been the Both Sides Guy. So the reaction was…

Which… I have to say, fair enough. I don’t think Chris Evans is a bad person, but he’s a white bro who definitely needs to reflect on his own actions, his own thoughts and his own privilege. Again, I’m not saying Chris or Captain America or Marvel movies are responsible for this current sh-tshow. But maybe don’t spend years Both Sides-ing and then tweet some sh-t about who is responsible. One side is for a functioning democracy. The other side is terrorism, white supremacy and violence.

So many republicans enabled this. There, fixed it for you Chris. Or maybe it should be Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham…. hell I don’t have time to type all the names but you get my point. I’m glad he stepped down from Marvel and hope we don’t see him again.

    • whatWHAT? says:

yeah, not sure why he’s most people’s favorite Chris. he SEEMED woke, but he’s shown us he’s still a privileged white boy who wants to keep “both sides” on HIS side so he can continue to be a box office draw.

I’d take Hemsworth and Pine (in that order) over Evans ANY. DAY.

  2. Nev says:

    Sit down.

  3. grabbyhands says:

And now he’s blocking people for rightfully calling him out for his naivete. Gross. Literally all he had to do was say was that he went in with good intentions but he sees now how foolish and tone deaf it was.

We were all rooting for you, Cap. And the bar was SO LOW.

    • Kat says:

Oh he’s blocking people for that? Well, shame on him. I guess he can’t handle criticism

    • grabbyhands says:

      @Casey on Twitter

    • schmootc says:

That’s disappointing. I do think he meant well, but at some point, you have to own up to the fact that the GOP is complicit in all of this and if you support them, you’re not innocent either.

    • lola says:

Who got blocked? The person that tweeted the photos?

    • milliemollie says:

OMG, who did he block? Tell me! That’s so childish from him!

      • Dollycoa says:

I get the feeling hes so pandered to that he thinks he can come out with some 6th form politics and all his fans will go on about how ‘ deep’ and intelligent he is, but he cant cope with the grownups calling him out. He didnt address why he felt it was ok to fly to another country in the summer during a pandemic either. He got away with it because hes so pretty and so deep with his politics website he couldnt possibly just have been so entitled he thought flying to the uk and fucking a stranger in a hotel room was ok for him but not for anyone else!

      • milliemollie says:

He was in England for WORK, haven’t you heard?:D I guess that cringy ice cream pap stroll can count as work…

His fans are truly something else…They almost baby him and think they have to “protect” him when he fucked up. I’ll never go through his hashtag on Twitter again.

      • Eva says:

lol WORK, yeah hahaha What work is this that nobody has seen anything until today? lol He went to UK twice, coincidentally the second time he was close to where Lily James was working, same Hotel, the Hotel ig followed both on ig at the same time. He knows his stans are stupid and are going to buy the job thing.

I think he and Lily were planning to become a PR couple, but Dominic came in between and ruined the PR plans.

  4. Mia4s says:

Bad person? Probably not. Ignorant, stupid, and not worth listening to? Yep, it appears so.

Look, someone else wrote everything he said and did as Captain America. Someone else directed every movement he made. None of that was him. THIS. This is what he comes up with when left to his own devices. His website was a stupid idea, he allowed himself to be used by some very bad and dangerous people, and he needs to STFU.

  5. Angel says:

I really like Chris Evans but he deserves to be called out. Another person who needs to be called out is Hugh Jackman « Mr I don’t talk politics with my friends » who is still friends with Ivanka and Jared.

    • Darla says:

Hugh Jackman I find far worse. I can’t even look at him any longer.

    • Nana says:

And he and his wife Debra Lee Furness have done incredible damage to the child welfare system in Australia, pushing forced adoption from out-of-home care (foster care).
We had only just began untangling all the harms caused by forced adoption of both Aboriginal people (the Stolen Generations – very similar situation to what happened with the systematic forced removal of First Nations children in Canada and Native American children in the US), as well as systematic forced removal of white children (mostly from poverty stricken backgrounds) in Australia.
Then when the doors started closing on overseas adoptions as countries tightened up their laws to try and prevent child trafficking, they lobbied hard to conservative state and federal governments (who love a good photo op) for forced adoptions from foster care. They got exactly what they asked for. Including shit loads of funding.

  6. ye says:

    Yes! Completely agree.
I first side eyeing him when people tried to make him the ‘pure white male’ fantasy and with him saying racist, sexist things about Selma Hayek and I think another female character? It was a one liner both times and I’m not really into Marvel but when he announced he was making a ‘both sides’ political website because he’s so knowledgeable and the person to do this, I knew he was a basic white boy who has been hyped up his whole life and can’t think critically past his own experiences. Let alone race or politics.

    • Yup, Me says:

“basic white boy who has been hyped up his whole life and can’t think critically past his own experiences”

Add a heaping dose of victimhood and indignant self centered outrage and you’ve got yourself a textbook Trump supporter.

      • Larisa says:

I mean, isn’t he though? Like, I don’t get how he is a movie star. He’s an ok actor – maybe more, never saw him in anything that’d test his chops – but he’s just so average in looks. If he were my neighbor, I wouldn’t probably even give him a second look on the street.

  7. Stacy Dresden says:

Massively disappointing and dangerous both sidesisms at a time when the nation teeters on the edge of chaos.

  8. Rapunzel says:

This is why Pine is the best Chris.

  9. Winechampion says:

Why does he think he’s required to chime in on everything?

    • Nana says:

Has a bad case of Mattdamonitis?

    • BearcatLawyer says:

Because he is an extremely privileged white American male?

      • lucy2 says:

        Exactly.

He has a big platform because he’s famous, and if he wanted to use that in a good way…fine. But he really needed to talk to, and more importantly LISTEN to, people who don’t have that privileged white male experience. He could have used his platform to give others a voice.
Instead, now he has a photo collection of…this.

    • SarahCS says:

      He’s a white man.

  10. Jess says:

The both sides people enrage me. I have found it to be mainly white guys (and some white women) who like to do this and they feel so smug in saying it – like they’re the only ones who are independent and wise enough to see what the “real” problems are. Well, he is officially no longer my favorite Chris.

    • Sankay says:

IMO, the both sides remark was to get people from both sides looking at the website. I would hope that once there the articles would lean left. But I don’t know.

  11. Darla says:

We are not working from reality in America. One side does not inhabit reality. You cannot have a debate or even a functioning democracy in a country where half the people live in an alternate reality. His organization was meant to begin from a place of reality, and then argue different opinions. I get it. I think we desperately need it. I don’t fault him for trying it. But is it possible? No I don’t think so. But if we accept it’s not possible, then where does this lead us? think about it. Where? Honestly it means we can no longer hold the union. So…yeah Chris Evans isn’t the problem.

    • Villern says:

Bravo @Darla. I despise Trumpism, but frankly when you see the lack of nuance of people from the left (even if I agree with the core argument) is worrisome.

      • Darla says:

Yeah, IMO it’s the internet that is the problem. The sickos were able to find each other and plot. Then a Trump came along, but one was always going to. Another one will be along soon. We likely already know their name. And then FB allowed the unhinged Q conspiracy to flourish and now it’s domestic terrorist group. Many of the terrorists yesterday were Q. The woman who was shot and killed? Q.

Attempting to get people into reality with a basic set of facts, is not “both sides” ing it. Just my opinion. I mean I think we’re in desperate trouble. I think yesterday marked the end of our Democracy, it just doesn’t know it yet. So it was too late for something like A Starting point. But they diagnosed the problem correctly.

    • Bri W. says:

      Exactly this.

    • Casey says:

Yes, I agree. The problem isn’t that he took a picture with Cruz or any other Republican. The problem is the voters who put these men in power. His website is meant to be about civil engagement with elected politicians. He’s not choosing the politicians, the fascist voters are. He himself has been an outspoken liberal and votes that way.

      • Darla says:

President Obama came under big fire when he “elevated” Paul ryan by calling on him during his health care summit, and saying he knows Ryan had serious ideas. Now, what Obama (who knew Ryan was a flim flam man) was doing was saying, let’s have the debate. He knew he could outdebate Ryan. He did outdebate Ryan. It’s a notion of, let’s put our cards on the table, start from point zero, and may the best ideas win. Believe me, people may not remember but I’m like an elephant. Obama was SLAMMED by the left for that. But was what he trying to do wrong? I don’t think so, but I do think this was before we all realized facts don’t matter.

      • Eva says:

@Casey He is giving a voice to these people. They are the ones who are dividing the country. A person who doesn’t understand politics so much can be convinced to support some Republican like Cruz just because some video he/she saw on Chris’ site.
The other side doesn’t want to hear us, they want to kill us.

    • Jack says:

      agree

  12. Elizabeth says:

Can we stop idolizing rich white dudebros now

  13. Nev says:

Honestly the most “interesting” thing (cause I can’t think of a better word) was exposing himself by accident.
Don’t care and do not need any political or social commentary from him.

  14. smee says:

    puke

  15. Mooshe1 says:

I didn’t know about this! When you’re dealing with Republicans right now you have to be In or out. Trump represents the Republican party and if they didn’t boldly stand against him they enabled. I don’t want to hear what the other side has to say

  16. Case says:

“So many people”????? Republicans, Chris. The word you’re looking for is Republicans.

    • Courtney B says:

Maybe he includes those like the Jill Steins and those like her and her supporters who said both sides are the same, Hilary is just like Trump etc.

  17. lola says:

How long until he posts another selfie with his dog to bury this?

  18. detritus says:

Rich white man who isn’t impacted by the outcome tells others that oppression is a two sided issue. Quelle surprise.

I’d just love to hear his take on the third reich.

And final thought, I still remember the slut jokes w Renner. I’d like to think people change, but Maya A always seems to be right.

  19. Cecilia says:

To be honest: i don’t think a political-explainer website where both sides explain basic political institutions and contested political problems in necessarily a bad thing. I think so much outrage often happens because people don’t understand certain institutions and why they were created in the first place. If one side explains all of these things the other side is not going to listen. That being said, a stupid stupid stupid move to then go take pictures with these politicians like they’re some super heroes. The only way that “both siding” is going to work is if he himself stays either politically neutral or at least moderate.

    • Darla says:

100%. His mistake was the pictures, which that patch idiot in particular used to make himself look like Captain America. The rest though…man it’s a good idea, we need this to happen. I don’t believe it will, but that makes us doomed. So don’t brag about being right about that. Because I really hope my doubts are unfounded. We’re doomed if this is the case. We will no longer be a democracy by 2030

      • Courtney B says:

Crenshaw was ick but he flat out said months ago the Cruz one was because of his daughter who came just to see him.

  20. Girl_ninja says:

His ASP initiative with Mark was an admirable attempt to bring social and political issues to the people without bias. But that’s not how things work. There is right and wrong and you one has to pick a side.

I don’t have any favorite white men right now. I’m tired of it all.

    • Courtney B says:

His personal Twitter is always like that though. There’s no doubt where he stands. The ASP is something separate and there’s a pretty clear line.

    • EditorM says:

ASP may as well be PoliticalPressReleases.org – he’s removed journalism, checks & balances, fact-checking and criticism.

      • milliemollie says:

Exactly! The whole website is pointless. It’s basically PR for politicians to hang out with Captain America.

  22. Jane Doe says:

Yeah, people with likeable public personas can be racist too. The insistence on claiming there are “both sides” to be heard gives legitimacy to the white supremacists who are enraged that Black, Latinx, Indigenous and Asian communities got to exercise their voting rights in Georgia and intend to continue insisting their rights to equality of opportunity. His claim is unforgivable.

  23. Nic919 says:

There is no both sides to this nonsense. One party tried to delegitimize an election and still raised their bs objections despite 60 court cases in various states confirming there was no evidence to make any claim questioning the election results.
One party let a racist lunatic take over their party and submitted to his racist terrorism for the sake of craven power. One party has worked to make voting more difficult for anyone who isn’t white. One party has used propaganda in the media akin to what is done in North Korea and elsewhere and still even after all the god damn trump paraphernalia seen on display yesterday is pathetically trying to say antifa caused the problems. All of the republicans own this and if you are trying to pretend that both sides are the problem, then you are a part of the problem too.

  24. Yati says:

He’s not very…smart. But I still would 100% for a weekend. Le sigh.

  25. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

There has never been a more important time to pick the right side… The side who favors humanity, quality of character, truth and facts, peace, tolerance and embracing all peoples and all cultures, progressive growth protecting our citizens, global alliances and our planet (our HOME). The Republican party is imploding because of hypocrisy, lies, projections, hatred, xenophobia, misogyny, isolationism, conspiracies, treachery and on and on and on. They must hold the weight of the monsters they’ve created — their supporters. It wasn’t the absurd and ridiculous and laughable ANTIFA. It was all Republican from top to bottom. Enjoy.

By choosing both sides, you are the problem as much as anyone.

  26. MM2 says:

I hope this signals a tide in America away from the “both sides” line of thinking. We have been taught & set up to believe in this, to believe that both sides in the US must be logical or not as bad as we think. This is not a Chris Evan’s problem, it’s a problem in all of the white US. I was lucky enough to have professors that taught me to never facilitate new versions of Nazis, and that they were normal citizens as they reigned terror, murder & horrific abuses on other innocent humans, but not everyone got this education. I hope that this shifts into a change in how we view & react to fascists…. cuz they’ll be back, they always are (our forefathers even knew this.) It’s an ebb & flow and we need to always be ready, including making our children ready.

  27. Victoria Broullon Wakefield says:

Why would anyone care what his opinion is? I find it hilarious that actors are under the impression their views and opinions are of interest to us??? It is delusions of grandeur.

    • Darla says:

The same could be said of any one of us, yet here we are.

Actors are citizens just like us. They have a right to speak.

      • Dollycoa says:

I agree. Actors are allowed to voice their opinions. The only difference between them and us is that their opinions get in the news more because they are famous. But I do get the impression that Chris Evan’s thought he was cleverer than he is and was the one who could shed light on the issues of polarisation in politics. The problem is he just doesnt know enough. He has limited experience and the experience he does have is that of a rich white guy. Just like most people in power. He just sounds like an actor pretending to be better than other actors because he was so much more serious. Captain America is also the most boring avenger 😄

      • Eva says:

@Dollycoa Evans only started talking about politics to not be behind Jenny Slate, who talks openly about politics. He didn’t want to allow her to be the smartest, so he had to get into politics. Before that he didn’t talk about politics. It was good for his image, it made him gain popularity, here we are, but he is not that smart person he pretends to be. He’s pretty dumb. He should be quiet and do what he knows best to show his body. He doesn’t even have talent.
His website came up because he didn’t want to read a wikipedia page, he wanted quick answers. God, he’s so stupid. If he were a woman, he would be ridiculed.

      • milliemollie says:

@Eva Jenny Slate who had to delete dozens of problematic tweets? Jenny Slate who had no problem to voice a biracial character for years? She’s not the brightest either.

      • Eva says:

@milliemollie Yep, Jenny Slate that even after Chris knew what she did, he didn’t care. Yes, she is smart. Making mistakes doesn’t make her stupid, besides, she’s a comedian, and she acknowledged that she doesn’t want to make those kinds of jokes anymore. She also acknowledged the mistake of making a woc character’s voice.
Don’t worry, I’m sure Chris will post a video of Dodger or maybe pretend to leak a photo of his penis to distract everyone.

      • milliemollie says:

Nah, she doesn’t get a cookie for giving up a part that she should have never played in the first place. If she were so smart and political then she would have known better and not voiced that character for years. She’s just another white feminist.

And don’t worry,I’m no Evans fan. His constant IG thirst traps were annoying af and do people really think he leaked that dick pic accidentally?! Lol, he did it on purpose.

      • Eva says:

@milliemollie My point is that he started talking about politics because of her. She’s not a saint, but at least she doesn’t use her dog to divert attention when she makes mistakes.
I agree, that photo wasn’t accident. He actually leaked on purpose.
He is desperate at ig, probably because he no longer has Marvel.
Interesting because he didn’t allow jenny to share pictures of him or his home when they were dating, not even when she was at disney with him. Then he suddenly became this thirsty for ig’s fame.

@tati Supporting his uncle’s campaign is not the same as talking about politics. He was just using his fame to convince people to vote for his uncle.
Jenny talked about politics, feminism, and many issues before him, look at her interviews.

    • Cath says:

@Eva, are you JS’s BFF/superfan/therapist/herself or something? Because you sure are taking this awfully personal… You make it sound like his entire life and idea of self revolves around Jenny. (Who might be super intelligent, I have no idea.) But yi-kes. I sincerely doubt she’s the sun to his earth. Hey, what do I know? Glad you’re in the know at least!

      • Tati says:

@Eva, actually, Chris was the one to talk about politics first and was involved for many years on his uncle’s campaigns. He just started to tweet more about it after Trump’s win and his fans acted as if he was going to change the word doing that. JS started to talk about her political views AFTER she started dating him. This is something pretty easy to check on her SM. After breaking up with him, she started to post again about politics only when she got with her now fiancee.

    • Cath says:

      Double post – hence edited

  29. The Recluse says:

What he was trying to do reminds me of that big concert show that Colbert and Jon Stewart held in DC trying to bring people together. It was huge. Later they said that their heart was in the right place, but the circumstances were just too different. Basically, it was a mistake was their long term perspective because both sides were not the same. I think Evans is in the same boat. I expect he may have to adjust his platform accordingly.

    • Lanie says:

That dumbass Rally to Restore Sanity/Civility?

It was a waste of a platform. Those same both siders voted days later to hand Congress to the GOP who had been refusing to compromise on anything. The same GOP that has been bending the knee to Trump.

      Jon Stewart fucked up major.

  30. Valerie says:

omg, I didn’t know he was a both sides-er. A lot of the people I follow retweet his posts, and I don’t follow and Trump supporters, so I just assumed he was a liberal. Wtf.

    • Casey says:

He is a liberal, very much a liberal, and pretty open about it.

There’s a difference between his personal politics, and the political site he created. The site is designed to be about civic engagement, not his own personal opinion.

  31. mary says:
