Princess Charlene on her ‘half-hawk’ haircut: ‘I wanted it for a long time’

The tradtional Christmas Tree children event at Monaco

In December, Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene stepped out for a Christmas-themed event, and she publicly debuted a new haircut. The haircut is… very dated. It’s basically a ‘90s skaterboy haircut, half-shaved and half-long. Many people said at the time that it was a Cry For Help Haircut, and soon enough, we learned why Charlene was struggling. It turns out that Prince Albert is due in Italian court on a paternity claim. I’ve lost count of how many paternity suits Albert has had over the years but it’s A LOT. I kind of believe that he’s got additional kids out there who we don’t even know about because he quietly paid off the mothers. Anyway! Going back to Charlene’s hair, most of us thought the cut was a tragedy, but Charlene has given an interview and she says it wasn’t any kind of visual S-O-S.

Monaco’s Princess Charlene doesn’t care what you think about her buzzcut. The royal is opening up about her dramatic new “half-hawk” haircut in a new interview on Wednesday with French magazine, Point de Vue, saying that was her “decision.” And that once the shock wore off, her husband Prince Albert has grown to like it!

Charlene, who turns 43 on Monday, debuted her new look on December 16 at the Palace’s annual Christmas party. Asked whether as a public figure she has found a way of dealing with the criticism that followed, she launched into a quick defense.

“This haircut was my decision,” she responded. “It seems that it has provoked all kinds of comments. But it turns out that I wanted it for a long time, the style pleases me. That’s all.”

Describing herself as an uncommon princess, she continued, “Certainly, of all the members of royal families, I’m probably the one who has tried the most different hairstyles, and I’ll continue. That’s my choice.”

The royal, who in the past has addressed criticisms branding her as distant and “unsmiling,” says she was prepared for strong reactions to her dramatic style change. “Of course. The remarks of ‘But what is she doing?’ and ‘But it’s not royal!’ — I know these all too well. And I have nothing to say to them, except that we’re in 2021 and that in these times which are so troubling, so difficult, there are other, much more important subjects which deserve our attention. What counts is that Jacques and Gabriella adore seeing their mother with her new style. And that after the initial surprise wore off, the prince understood and likes it now too.”

[From People]

I can’t stop imagining if Duchess Kate or Duchess Meghan did something this dramatic with their hair. We wouldn’t be able to stop talking about it for weeks, and there would be literally hundreds of thinkpieces about hair, women, feminism and “royal protocol.” And Charlene’s like “screw you guys, I did it for myself, end of.” Good for her if it’s something she’s always wanted and she honestly DGAF. But I also sort of believe that it’s still a cry for help, or at the very least, a very public screw-you to her husband and to Monaco in general.

    That is an AWFUL haircut

    • Krakken says:

      Totally disagree with you.
It is The. Best. !!! I am here for Princess Charlene letting her freak flag fly!!

      • Watson says:

@krakken I’m with you on this one. Love it. She must have been so tired of being told what to wear and how to behave. What a way to stick it to the princess stereotype, the royal courtiers and her husband who never learned to put on a condom. Imagine if Kate Middleton had the balls to just break free. It’s be great!!

      • Sojaschnitzel says:

        I love it too!

      • Mustang Sally says:

I agree! We are (still) in difficult times. Her husband, in his way, publicly shamed her by having relations outside of marriage. Perhaps this is her way of returning that shame and at the same time, empowering herself. If she is feeling shamed and isolated, perhaps the cut brought her joy and a feeling of freedom. It’s hair, it will grow back, should she choose to do so.

      • Still_Sarah says:

@ Kraken : I don’t like it but I agree she should let her freak flag fly. I’m almost 60 and have had my head shaved at home due to the pandemic and hair shops being closed. A buzz cut is SO freeing and fun too. It’s also a FU to conventions of how a woman is “expected” to look/ act.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

      Hideous.

    • Zia says:

LOVE this on her. It’s super sexy. Any woman brave enough to do this is a badass and it speaks volumes to her ability to carry herself with grace while also looking like a ninja! She slays this cut. Much better than some matronly cut that has been done over and over and over by so many women. This is like she’s preparing for the next Matrix movie. HOT.

    • missskitttin says:

      And it is so 2012

  2. RoyalBlue says:

i am on the ‘it’s a screw you haircut’ bandwagon. she has no more effs to give and is doing what she wants. the monaco royals are not the same league as the british, japanese, danish royals so they have more leeway with their behaviour without getting as much pushback.

    • BW says:

I’m in the “Screw You, Albert” camp. I don’t like the haircut, but applaud Charlene for doing what she wants.

  3. Cafecito says:

I find such display of personality very refreshing.

  4. Tulipworthy says:

It is not a very flattering haircut.

  5. Megs says:

I don’t know if I’d noticed how tragic her eyebrows were, either. No shame in adding color (I use eyebrow gel myself), just those are a little stencil-y. Oh, Charlene

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Definitely 90s brows…overplucked, not much left to fill in after yanking the roots out. (Welcome to my life lol)

      • Jaded says:

I’ve been using an eyelash/eyebrow serum that stimulates new growth and slows down the falling-out process and I now have thick eyelashes and eyebrows for the first time in decades. I too over-plucked but seriously, try the Lash Bond serums from Liaison, they really work! Oh, and they have a mascara that contains the serum too and it’s great.

  6. Seraphina says:

I find it awful and it’s a middle finger to her husband. She has wanted it for a long time because she has wanted to say Screw You to her husband for a long time.

  7. grabbyhands says:

I think the cut is awful, and I think it is definitely a “screw you” haircut, but it is her head and god knows she’s earned it. If she finds it liberating, more power to her.

  8. Frankly my dear... says:

I don’t know…I think it’s cute. And not dated. I’m a teacher and the asymmetrical haircuts are all over my school. Her haircut looks a lot like all the boys on our basketball team. Good for her!

    • Mac says:

Several of my employees have this haircut, or a version of it. I guess Millenials are going through a Gen X phase.

    • Maxime duCamp says:

I was just going to ask if this type of undercut/buzzed/asymmetrical hairstyle was having a resurgence. My friend’s tween daughter just got a new haircut with one side-buzzed like Charelene’s but the unbuzzed side is a lot longer.

  9. Alexandria says:

Not my style but if she likes it so be it. However I do like that a princess has this haircut.

  10. Faye says:

I like her answer. She’s lucky to not have the institution like the British.

I could never picture Kate giving an answer like this.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Kate barely has the guts to trim a few inches off the bottom (‘cos “William likes long hair”) bleach!!

She’d NEVER do ANYTHING daring, hell, she’d never even entertain the thought of doing something like that on her own!

    • Jaded says:

The most daring thing Kate ever did was flash her butt publicly on numerous occasions.

    • Jumpingthesnark says:

If Kate got this cut William would go supernova with rage, and the BRF courtiers would spontaneously combust.

  11. Chlo says:

I love it and her attitude!

  12. Sofia says:

I don’t like it but I do like Charlene with shorter hair in general. But if she did it for herself and she likes it then more power to her!

  13. Sonia says:

She’s not wearing any wedding band in these pics.

  14. TheOriginalMia says:

I like that she’s not taking the criticisms to heart. It’s her hair and she’ll do what she wants to it. Good for her!

  15. Leducduswaz says:

She’s a Benoni girl, just like Charlize. They’re not known for putting up with crap, this is definitely a “screw you” haircut.

  16. embrat says:

i don’t particularly like the hair cut- especially the back- it looks like a blunt bowl cut. Just looking through google images, she does seem to be adventurous with her hair. Her hair looks really thin and super fine long- looks much better short. She’s had some great haircuts/ styles through the years!

  17. ellie says:

I don’t like the haircut but I LOVE that she did this.

Imagine little girls seeing a princess can also look like this. So cool.

    • Amy Too says:

I like that too. Princesses and royals can look however they want. I don’t ever understand the “it’s not royal!” complaint. She is literally a Princess. She is royal. Therefore anything she does is royal. Same with Meghan. By virtue of being a duchess, anything she wore was royal/duchess-y.

Royals used to be trendsetters. Because they had the money and the time and the access to the best designers and dress makers. So they set trends and whatever they did became super high end and stylish and “royal” because they were royals. I really dislike how royal—especially BRF— fashion and style is so boring, conservative, dated, and monotonous. The Queen, Camilla, and Kate all wear ugly, conservative, coat dresses. If they wore the same size, they could dress out of each other’s closets and we would barely notice. Kate didn’t even wear pants until Meghan came along and wore them first. Then, Kate seemed to feel she had permission and figured out that pants could be considered “royal Duchess clothing.” It’s like the BRF is mostly dressing how they think other people envision “royal Princess clothing,” rather than understanding that anything they wear can be “royal Princess clothing” because they ARE royal princesses.

    • Nikki* says:

I agree with you completely.. And you know what? It’s ONLY HAIR! Our looks can reflect our personality, and it’s good to explore different facets of ourselves, even if we have a few “misses”. Good for her!

    • Jumpingthesnark says:

Also love her mask. Hope FFK and FFA are paying attention.

  18. Chaine says:

I like it. She’s a badass. I think criticism would be less if we were seeing her full face rather than a hairstyle, eyes, and mask.

  19. SarahCS says:

I’m just wondering how long passed between her getting the haircut and Albert actually seeing her/a photo of her to know she’d had it done….

  20. Jaded says:

She and Albert live apart most of the time, she’s clearly got no more effs to give and if he doesn’t like it I don’t think she gives a toss.

  21. MJM says:

It’s terrible. I really dislike the close shaven look on most people but that’s me. I’m fine with funky asymmetrical cuts though.

  22. Lunasf17 says:

I love it and love that she has zero fs to give at this point. The Monaco royals are the most entertaining IMO.

  23. Silent Star says:

I’m always surprised that people seem to expect others to choose styles that are “attractive”. Yes, people disagree about whether this style is attractive, but that’s beside the point.

I think we have to ask ourselves why do we expect others to make themselves attractive for the rest of us? It’s irrelevant. We choose our look based on how we want to express ourselves and what kind of impression we want to make. Charlene chose a style she wanted for a long time, and it didn’t matter what others think. I love her for that!

I really admire people who don’t pander to society’s expectations of being a pretty thing to look at. I also love that she dared step outside those expectations as a royal person! All of this makes me love love LOVE her haircut!!

Could almost any other haircut make her look prettier? YES, but so what? I don’t place a value on her based on how pretty she is. All that being said, I think this might be my most favorite haircut of any modern royal ever!

  24. Jumpingthesnark says:

If she wanted to say eff off to the shitty people in her life, great. Maybe Albert figured out that the haircut was drawing attention away from his paternity suit.
Most importantly, she likes it. End of.

  25. Annabel says:

Controversial opinion: this haircut only looks weird because she still has baby bangs (gelled to the side, but still there) from her previous look. Do a google image search for “C. Pam Zhang” (amazing American novelist) to see how awesome this haircut can look when all of the side-swept hair is closer to the same length.

  26. Katebush says:

I like it! Good on her. And yes imagine if Kate or megs did this the horror!!

  27. EllenOlenska says:

If it’s really a screw you…up and leave him. Otherwise it’s just an unfortunate look on her. And twenty years out of date.

    • SomeChick says:

“Twenty years out of date” = vintage style.

      • EllenOlenska says:

Check out Cameron Diaz “vintage style homage” in “my best friends wedding” wedding scene. That’s what I kept thinking of here…some vintage is best left in the past.

  28. Le4Frimaire says:

Good for her for speaking up and telling everyone to mind their business and chill. I kinda like her haircut and like how severe it is. She still looks miserable and Albert’s a mess, but it’s refreshing for her to call out the BS and point out how trivial this stuff is.

  29. A Fan says:

I wrote this on the first post about her haircut back in December.

    Couple things astrologically:

Charlene has her Sun and Venus tightly conjunct in Aquarius. She will always be unique in her appearance and may not always conform to what we think of as traditional ‘feminine’ beauty.

She is approaching her Uranus opposition (which always happens in one’s early to mid forties). It can be a time of sudden moves/drastic decisions (in any realm) and is often referred to as a ‘mid-life crisis’. It can manifest in many ways (ie. something as simple as a haircut or as drastic as a unexpected divorce).

Her north node is in Libra, which means her south node is in Aries. She is absolutely no pushover. She does what she wants and is NO wallflower (no matter what others may think or the perception we have).

To add fuel to that Aries south node fire, her Moon and Mars (if birth time is correct) are in Leo. Again, she has a very willful side to her (regardless of what anyone thinks).

[*And Leo makes a show of their mane – long, short, shaved, or bald!*]

  30. Jessie says:

I just shaved half my hair after 35 years of hair everyone but I loved. Now I LOVE my hair and do it almost every day and I feel better about who I am. Let her shave her head without calling it a cry for help just because it doesn’t fit Eurocentric beauty standards.

  31. Christine says:

I agree, she did this for a REASON, full capitals. Having said that, during quarantine in LA, I handed my 10 year old a pair of scissors and goaded him to cut off my extremely long ponytail, because it was hot. Not HAWT, HOT. It was mid-August, and my hair had become its own thing, and sweat was everywhere.

I feel so much for her, I cannot imagine what her life is like, and I honestly don’t want to know. We are all living our personal versions of hell, right now, but her version feels so lonely, to me.

  32. Jenn says:

Last year I shaved one side of my head — kind of like Princess Charlene’s sidecut but way more subdued — because my short hair naturally grows out into a “Karen” helmet if I don’t intervene fast. When it started to grow out again, I cut it into a fauxhawk/undercut. (Now it’s back to being a helmet, of course.) Sidecuts like hers are easy to DIY, which is why they’re such a popular choice in quarantine, “safer” than bangs/fringe or a completely shaven head. I would not call the haircut “dated,” considering how many people have also done it.

    • emu says:

Agree, don’t see it as dated. I know several ppl with shaved sides of heads at one point or another in the past few years. Also – even if it is a 90’s skaterboy cut, it’s made new again! even so, what’s wrong with old hairstyles ??

  33. emu says:

I said it before and I’ll say it again. Love the haircut, love her badassery, love it.
Even if it is an FU to Albie, she still wanted the cut and I’m glad.

  34. tealily says:

That weird cowlick bit in the back? Ugh the whole thing is hideous.

  35. Nibbi says:

I thought the pic was of Kristen Stewart at first glance!
