The Mail was ordered to print a front-page statement in their loss to Duchess Meghan

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will making their first joint official visit to Sussex at the University of Chichester Tech Park .Bognor Regis 3 October 2018

Last week, the Duchess of Sussex’s lawyers once again went to court (via Zoom) with the Mail on Sunday’s lawyers and Justice Warby, who has overseen the entire lawsuit regarding the Mail’s infringement of Meghan’s copyright (they published her handwritten letter to her father). Justice Warby ruled in favor of Meghan in February, granting her summary judgment, but there are still several outstanding issues before the court, and that’s what last week’s hearing was for. One of the most immediate rulings from Warby was that the Mail had to begin to cough up money to pay for Meghan’s legal costs, which are apparently around $2 million. Meghan’s lawyers wanted the Mail to pay a huge chunk upfront, and Warby lessened the first payment to $625K, meaning those broke asses at the Mail will need to pay Meghan’s legal fees and damages on layaway. But that’s not all! Meghan has also asked the court to order the Mail to publish a front-page headline and story about her victory. The judge was like “okay, let’s do that.”

A British tabloid must print a front-page notice admitting that it lost a legal battle against Meghan Markle for publishing an emotional letter she wrote to her estranged dad, a judge ruled on Friday. The ruling came a month after High Court Judge Mark Warby said the Mail on Sunday had breached Markle’s privacy and infringed on her copyrights by printing parts of a handwritten note she sent to her father, Thomas Markle, in August 2018 after he didn’t come to her wedding to Prince Harry.

In another win for Markle, the judge ruled that the outlet’s publisher, Associated Newspapers, must print a statement on its front-page admitting to its legal loss. The front-page font size must be no smaller than the paper’s February 2019 headline “Meghan’s Shattering Letter to Her Father,” Warby said in his judgement.

This notice will be coupled with a longer statement on page three of the paper explicitly stating that the court found that “Associated Newspapers infringed her (Markle’s) copyright by publishing extracts of her handwritten letter to her father in The Mail on Sunday and in Mail Online,” the judge said. The MailOnline Web site must run the statement on its homepage for a week, too, with a hyperlink to the court’s full judgement, Warby said.

Markle’s lawyers had asked that the online statement stay up for six months “to act as a deterrent for future infringers,” but the judge said he “was not persuaded of the case for prolonged publication.” Still, the judge said he was disturbed that “there has been just one short article on an inside page of” the Mail on the judgment. He also noted, “There is something to be said for [Markle’s] argument that the coverage of the case in MailOnline has not been very informative about the issues in the case and how they were resolved.”

The judge also pointed out that the publications involved had “devoted a very considerable amount of space to the infringing articles, which it continued to publish for over two years. “The wording sought is modest by comparison, and factual in nature,” Warby added of the notices he was ordering.

All of this is just… perfect. The judge taking the Mail to task for not properly covering Meghan’s victory, his ordering of the same font size for the front page, his demand that the Mail keep it as the top story online for a week. Come on. It’s perfect. Those dumbf–ks at the Mail are such f–king babies too. They refuse to admit that they lost, that’s what all of this is about. They’re in denial, they’re mad, they’re lashing out like children and desperately trying to change the subject to Meghan’s “bullying.” That’s what’s coming next – “Meghan bullied staffers, she bullied her father and now she’s bullying the Mail.” GTFO.

With this and Piers Morgan…she is definitely playing chess…and winning!

    • Ang says:

Yay for our girl Meg! Finally.

    • GrnieWnie says:

I love it. I saw this story the other day, and it made my day. Hearing the judge eviscerate The Daily Mail…that is where this war will be won. The monarchy is too weak and rotten to put the tabloids in line. So, individuals are going to have to sue them out of existence. The rule of law is going to enable this because the tabloids are fundamentally WRONG WRONG WRONG. All their stupid arguments are wrong. And taking them to court illustrates this. Meghan is winning!

    • Myra says:

Right? Jason Knauf will for sure think twice before claiming co-authorship. She is not playing.

    • lalisa says:

This is what happens when all you give out there to the universe is positivity and good vibes. Karma might take her sweet ass time, but when she comes knocking, no one is safe.

      • Spanky says:

My God, how I am laughing at your remark Ialisa! I think I’m going to needlepoint that on a pillow.

  2. L Leti says:

They tried the wrong one lmao.

So are we just going to ignore Meghan referencing ‘Waity Katy’ in her interview??? That was simply *chef’s kiss*

    • Sofia says:

Kaiser wrote an article about that yesterday

    • Digital Unicorn says:

That alone will trigger Top CEO and the Middletons, they will retaliate in some way.

      • Beach Dreams says:

They already did last night via Richard Kay. I’m sure there’ll be a post on it today.

      • Wiglet Watcher says:

They can’t ever retaliate in any meaningful way. They can only run to the tabloid trash to write bs. They can never go on the record like Harry and Meghan and say all these accounts are lies… because they’re not lies and there’s proof.

So, they hide and wait for it to all blow over while others attacks for them.

This will be a slow dismantling of their system.

  3. Sofia says:

Good. She deserves a front page apology from the Mail. And when this is published, I might buy the Mail for the first and last time 😉

  4. Oatmeal says:

And to think all this could have been avoided if The Firm had put their foot down on the media smearing Meghan from jump

Now look at all of them, the DM has to fall on it’s own sword , Piers Morgan fired/quit and The Firm rocked to its foundation

This whole saga is the textbook definition of “f*** around and find out*

  5. Emily says:

I hope the Royal Family sees this and realizes they only need to be afraid of the media if they have something to hide. They must because the fear Harry and Meghan talked about seems so pathetic.

  6. Lauren says:

The judge was feeling extra petty. I love it.

  7. Becks1 says:

This is so perfect. F*ck around and find out, indeed.

The Mail should have left Meghan alone, but no, they refused, and now she’s beaten them.

Did you catch the irony (been using that word a lot recently) in the last Byline article about the case – that Justice Warby, in his previous position as a QC, used to act FOR the Mail in big cases – he led their defense when they were sued by Prince Charles in 2006. So he must know inside and out how they operate. And yet, he found for Meghan in her case in a big way. No wonder the Mail is livid.

        @windyriver
That judge is SALTY and I love it!!!!!!! Excellent article. Thanks!

      • Thanks for the link, WindyRiver. That as an excellent read. My question: Does anyone know if there is a deadline as to when this has to be published? I mean, the article already mentions that the judge is upset that the letter is still accessible after he ruled it had to be taken down. When would they be considered in contempt?

  8. Neners says:

The only queen I know and acknowledge. Meghan brought that “ya’ll gonna learn today” energy to the British tabloids and they were not ready. FAFO.

  9. MerlinsMom1018 says:

    Y’alllllllllll….
I am living for these comments!!!!!!!

  10. Pocket Litter says:

@WINDYRIVER, thank you for the link

  11. Sunday says:

i’m glad Meghan won, obviously, but I’m not going to celebrate until we actually see the headline. i’m sure the daily fail will sneak in something underhanded; I don’t expect them at all to just write a straightforward, truthful headline and article. Meanwhile, before, after, and even in that same issue they’ll write a dozen other tall tales painting her the villain. i hope she bankrupts them.

  12. Beach Dreams says:

This is exactly the treatment these rags need to give for every apology they must issue. Same size font, same placement, and same energy as the lies they churn out. I look forward to this front page apology.

  13. Sassafras says:

This has made my day. The stars are finally aligning for Meghan. She completely deserves all this justice – Pierce, Daily Mail, showing the BRF their ass – after everything she’s been through.

  14. LaraW” says:

Why are they paying on layaway? Do they not have insurance to cover litigation costs?

    • Lucky Charm says:

Maybe the royal family refused to cough up the dough.

    • FicklePickle says:

Large corporations, as an absolute rule, HATE paying even a fraction of a cent for ANYTHING, EVER, and will do everything they can to pay as little as possible for as long as possible no matter who it is they have to pay.

  15. Silent Star says:

Daaayum, the British press finally starting to get their comeuppance!

  16. MonicaQ says:

Didn’t they tell you she was savage?? They showed their ass and Meghan handed them a pair of comupance pants.

  17. Charfromdarock says:

I’m going to need Celebitchy to tell me when it’s posted because this will be the only time I click on daily fail!

    • anotherlily says:

It might be on Sunday because the order refers to the Mail on Sunday as well as the Mail Online. The printed Mail on Sunday has to print the notice on the front page with further details on page 3. The Mail Online has to put the statement on the top of the page with a link to the Judgement (the full judgement is 20 pages) and to do this for seven consecutive days.

      • windyriver says:

@anotherlily – thought I remembered reading this, thanks for posting – they have to do it for 7 consecutive days. Beautiful.

  18. Izzy says:

I hope The Duchess gets a copy, frames it, and has it hanging on the wall behind her for every damn Zoom she does. Forever and ever. Amen.

  19. Margaret gwen says:

I find it Interesting that it’s only this blog that is for meghan the rest are still throwing stones at her. Even in my home country, I am from Africa and once a colony of britain people who have never followed the RBF smear campaign are saying meghan is just looking for sympathy that she should be thankful etc etc….thankful for what I dont know…am so ashamed….that’s why am saying the RBF will still stand strong cos all her former colonies are behind them …no matter what they do even being racist they still cant fault them…
