Beyonce & Serena Williams send their support to the Duchess of Sussex

Britain's Meghan, Duchess of Sussex (L) meets cast and crew, including US singer-songwriter Beyoncé (C) and her husband, US rapper Jay-Z (R) as she attends the European premiere of the film The Lion King in London on July 14, 2019.

The Duchess of Sussex has enjoyed so much celebrity support from her American friends throughout this ordeal. During Meghan’s years in England, most of the support was behind-the-scenes, people quietly visiting her or calling her. But the Oprah interview and everything around it marked a new day in her support. The support has gone global, and I’ve seen comment after comment about how women of color, specifically Black women, see themselves in Meghan’s story. Her story is one of being oppressed, of getting blamed for everything under the sun, of double-standards, of being viewed as mean/angry/aggressive, of “making white people cry.” Beyonce knows how that sh-t feels.

On Tuesday night (March 9), Beyoncé took to her website to extend support to Markle, who opened up during the interview about just how challenging her time in the royal spotlight was.

“Thank you Meghan for your courage and leadership,” Beyoncé wrote next to a photo of the pair meeting for the first time — alongside their famous husbands — at the London premiere of The Lion King in the summer of 2019. “We are all strengthened and inspired by you.”

It’s not breaking news that Beyonce loves Meghan – they met at the Lion King premiere, obviously, and Beyonce also let people know that Meghan is a queen to her at the 2019 Brit Awards. I hope the Beyhive is ready. Please blanket the royal reporters’ nasty asses with bee emojis.

Immediately following the Oprah interview, Meghan’s friend Serena Williams posted this statement, below. Serena has gotten a really good look at what these people did to her friend and Rena is NOT happy.

I’m glad to see that she has the support of very visible people! Good for her.

    • Amy Bee says:

      Me too.

    • Charlie says:

This is such an amazing counter to all the negative things that have been/are being said. This put many emotional miles between the Duchess and her abusers (esp. Piers M and her own father).

Speaking of distance. Wanted to say earlier this week that if you wondered about who wrote what Mr. Markle said about Meghan – Montecito is more than 300 miles from Mexico, and he would certainly know that – but PM wouldn’t.

Nice to hear people speak with authenticity about Harry and Meghan.

    • Otaku fairy says:

Agreed. Especially with everything coming her way.

  2. lanne says:

Go ahead Cambridges, come to the US! I dare ya!

    • Leonelda says:

I swear I will fly to New York or wherever they dare show their faces with DOZENS of roses in hand and hand them straight to William.

    • whatWHAT? says:

yeah, they don’t want the Beyhive OR the G.O.A.T. coming for them.

but it sure would be fun to watch.

I know that Beyonce and Serena don’t throw their friendship or support to just anyone. and I LOVE that these two powerful, amazing, take-no-crap WOC have made it public that they are in her corner.

    • Becks1 says:

I dont think they’re going to get to hang out with Beyonce and JayZ if they do LOL.

  3. UptownGirl says:

This is truly wonderful!! I think we all join in with Serena’s touching words and Ms. Beyoncé support too! It’s great to see women, especially WOC, gather around her and voice their support!!

  4. Tiffany says:

I felt Serena’s statement down in my bones past my soul.

Greatest of All Time letting y’all know she ain’t having it.

    • Myra says:

I love their friendship. Two incredible women supporting each other.

    • Watson says:

Same. Serena knows exactly the racism and misogyny that’s out there for spectacular women of colour. She is not having any of it. Love her!

  5. MF1 says:

The writers and readers on this site were 100% right when they labeled the RF’s treatment of Meghan as abusive. Glad to see that Meghan is a safe place with the (public!) support of her friends. If the RF thought going up against Oprah was bad, I’d *really* like to see them take on Beyonce.

    • Tiffany says:

You just know Willnot and Cannot are seething that H&M have Queen Bey not only in their corner, but also her phone number.

  6. Cecilia says:

Do you think bey sent meghan ivy park merch😂

  7. C-Shell says:

This just makes me cry all over again. I’ll never understand how *anybody*, even the most bitter British heart, could watch the Oprah interview and not ache for Meghan, and be appalled at the pain inflicted upon her and neglected, ignored, oppressed during those years (and after, tbh). Not to leave Harry out of this. His misery is long standing, and now fresh because of the cycle repeating itself with the love of his life and his child(ren). I can see how he’d believe the only solution is to leave entirely because as long as they were caught in that suffocating institution, he would be helpless to protect his family. Meghan’s friends no doubt felt helpless, too, and massively worried about her, unable to be near her or to stand for her. Janina looked soooo relieved to be able to speak up this morning, although I worry that she’s a bit optimistic that we’ve entered a new era. But I’m cynical.

ETA – I pray that the receipts that Meghan and Janina have been very clear to affirm exist has put the BRF on notice to cease and desist, but I’ll bet money that’s like red meat in front of the RR who will want to put pressure on whomever they can to flush the details out.

    • Sean says:

You would be surprised. I visit a message board where I consider a majority of its users to be very thoughtful (or used to) and the general consensus is “What did Meghan expect, marrying into the epitome of white supremacy?”, she was acting like a “whiney brat” and she’s just “upset she won’t get to be the Duchess of Woke”.

I was disgusted when I read these things. You could make an argument that Meghan was naïve about what attempting to join the “royal” family would be like for her, however no amount of naïveté or short-sightedness that may have existed on her part excuses the abuse they’ve heaped on her. They drove her to the point of feeling suicidal. On purposes. They wanted to drive her away at all costs, even if it meant actual, physical harm coming to her.

      • Emm says:

Gosh it’s sooooo disappointing when that happens right? I feel like the last five years of my life really accelerated that and finding out who people really are. People I loved, family, and people I would literally talk to on a daily basis I now have no relationship with because they have fallen for all of the conspiracies and all of the lies of the right. I don’t understand how the people I used to know and have conversations with and seemed to be on the same page about life with can now believe and act this way. I also feel like it helped me grown and see where I was wrong for so many years and really opened my eyes and I have really worked to change and can never go back. We were all pretty apathetic I think and then once dump got elected I went one way and they went the other.

Wanted to add that my own mother would be one of those people you mentioned. I really had no idea she was like that until she started saying stuff to me when that Access Hollywood tape came out with Billy bush and she just called it locker room talk and how it was no big deal. Then she would say to me “You wouldn’t stay in a situation where someone was sexually harassing you right?” And go on to victim blame.

  8. Alexandria says:

I wanted to list the blue tick supporters but they’re so many!

  9. Merricat says:

    I love this so much.

  10. Jay says:

If we’re assembling teams in a pickup game, Meghan and Harry have Oprah, the Obamas, the Bidens, Beyonce, Serena Williams, and Desmond Tutu, just off the top of my head.

The royal family has Piers Morgan.

    • Alexandria says:

That’s what someone commented too. Look at the people who are on HM’s side and look who you have defending the royal family. It’s embarrassing…

Wolverine, I mean Hugh Jackman, also tweeted his support!

    • Myra says:

And Farage, Katie Hopkins, the Trumps etc I mean….

    • Sushi says:

Do not forget the beautiful young poet Amanda Gorman tweeted her support.

  11. Lauren says:

I would like to think that they understand that it’s best to keep out of the US for a long while, but then again they are that shameless.

  12. Lanie says:

Well, at least the Windsors have:

    Bethenny Frankel
    Clay Aiken
    Piers Morgan
Ben Shapiro, known for being unable to give his wife (or any woman) WAP
Candace Owen, who let her own racist supporters call her very own biracial baby all kinds of vile racist names.

Looking like a pretty sad and pathetic list

  13. nutella toast says:

The Beyhive is about to come after the Royals…and I’m pretty sure there are HIVE members than stuffy royals so…watch your back so you don’t get stung 🙂

    • Tiffany says:

Kaiser tweeted today that everyone is chosing violence today and she is here for it.

The Beehive and Black Twitter, you come for them, you better be prepared.

  14. Juliette says:

This has likely been said a million times but 1 thing I have noticed through this and it could be that they’re not allowed to comment but I haven’t seen a single friend coming out to defend Kate. It’s all been palace denials.

Meghan has a ton of friends and allies that are defending her. Radio silence for Kate. Just another confirmation, to me at least, that Kate doesn’t have a lot of girlfriends and is clearly not a “girl’s girl”. Very unfortunate. We all need a community of women around us and it’s too bad she doesn’t have that.

    • lanne says:

she has the aristos who laugh at her behind their backs.

    • superashes says:

It could be the same situation as with Meghan, where Meghan’s friends were silenced and were unable to speak to the media to counteract various narratives, including the confirmed-bs story about Meghan making Kate cry at the wedding.

      • idk says:

Nah. Kate doesn’t have friends. I’d feel sorry for her if she weren’t so awful.

      • Lemons says:

As much as their camp leaks, if they had friends willing to go to the press, they would be out in droves. They only have employees and Carole who will take that step for her. Whether that is by design by the institution or how Kate rolls, that seems to be what’s happening.

    • Alexandria says:

I’m sure she has female friends…they’re just the Ivanka and Melania types.

      • Meghan's DonkeySanctuary(formerly cherriepie84) says:

If she had real friends they would have already been leaking to the daily fail. She is cruel and shameless and deserves all the karma that will come her way.

  15. SH says:

In some ways the racism of the Royal family and courtiers shows mostly clearly how they were too oblivious to Meghan’s proximity to power. They really did see Oprah attending the wedding as a tabloid talkshow show just trying to manipulate her way into an interview and not a billionaire with more money than the Queen. I know they didn’t recognize the power of her friends, especially with so many of them being of color until they all posted about Meghan cookbook launch and saw the global reach of these friends’ platforms. Then they started getting scared and only became more scared with the Australian tour, but rather than respecting that power the way in their fear they felt the desperate need to control Meghan to calm their racist and misogynistic fear of her.

    • Sansa says:

right? Oprah, Beyoncé and Serena are Black royalty. the BRF didn’t earn their power and platform. Meghan’s friends did, and they have nothing compelling them from being silent. anonymous sources and Piers M*rgan look like jokes next to public posts of support like these.

  16. Jayna says:

That’s fantastic. After seeing her on-screen Suits father, actor Wendell Pierce, dragging her and Harry and being dismissive yesterday, it’s nice to see other celebrities coming out for her.

    • Emm says:

I know?! What was that all about anyway? I watched him on The Wire and Jack Ryan and to me he played the same kind of guy, a dick. Maybe that’s just him playing himself then. I also saw that he tried to go back and say it wasn’t meant as an attack but then went on to make it sound like she should’ve known what she got into or she failed history. Same old. Like he couldn’t have just said, I support my friend end of story let’s move on?

    • Roo says:

Noooo. I thought he was so supportive of her. I’m so saddened by this. He knows what POC go through on a daily basis.

  17. Wiglet Watcher says:

Beyoncé doesn’t speak out often… this is pretty big. Queen to Queen.

  18. Nibbi says:

Warms my heart that the right people are coming out in support of the right people.

I’m glad she’s outta there now, Harry too, Archie too, baby-girl too, safe and warmly held by friends in America, man, after all they’ve been through.
