Mickey Guyton was the first Black solo female to be nominated in a country category

Everyone was talking about Mickey Guyton last night. She was the first Black solo female artist to be nominated in a Grammy country category, which says so much about that industry. Vince Gil won in that category, for Country Solo Performance. Mickey was asked about breaking into country music and she said that it was her responsibility to hold the door open for other women, as Rissi Palmer had done for her. Mickey’s performance of “Black Like Me” was the first time a lot of people had heard her. There’s a reason for that. Mickey has basically been ignored by country radio stations, but I bet that’s going to change after last night. Mickey’s performance was powerful and so many people tweeted that they would keep an eye out for her and follow her career. Her lovely red carpet gown, below, is Valentino and she’s wearing Neil Lane jewels. Also Mickey just had a baby a month ago!

Maren Morris was one of several artists in Dolce & Gabbana last night, including DaBaby and Megan Thee Stallion, which is troublesome given how problematic D&G are. She was nominated for Best Country Song, for “The Bones” which she performed accompanied by John Mayer. I wasn’t that fond of her red carpet dress and thought it could be tailored better, although the train is lovely. Her performance dress was gorgeous though. I wish she would have worn that first.

H.E.R. won Song of The Year, for “I Can’t Breathe” along with Tiara Thomas. They said in a press conference afterwards that they came up with the song over Facetime when they were talking about how frustrated and sad they were in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder. Tiara said “we wanted to relay how everyone else was feeling and put it in a song.” H.E.R. was regal in a full length Dundas velvet gown with silver embellishments. I love Tiara’s look, especially her makeup which looked incredible on camera.

I thought H.E.R.’s look was just stunning. Love the 70s vibe, beautiful plum color.

I don’t listen to country music but between this story and the fact that they wouldn’t play Old Town Road, methinks they have a real race problem…

Mickey’s voice is absolutely beautiful. She also looked stunning yesterday. So hard to believe she gave birth just 4 weeks ago !

Country music radio needs to f*ck right off with their racist bullsh*t !
