Countess Kate wore wide-leg trousers in Orkney & they are actually pretty good?

The Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge Visit Scotland - Day Five

It honestly cracks me up that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (the Earl and Countess of Strathearn) color-coordinate their ensembles. They do it all the time! They both seem to think that blue is their signature color, so you’ll often see Kate and William looking like they both got blue’d. For today’s activities in Orkney, they coordinated their browns. The Daily Mail originally referred to this as “fifty shades of beige,” which is honestly pretty accurate.

Kate wore a “recycled” Massimo Dutti coat and wide-leg trousers in a shade of camel. Fifty shades of beige jokes aside, I actually like the way Kate coordinated her browns. Some days, I feel like Kate has a problem coordinating which shades go together but she nailed this, or her stylist nailed it. I even like the tartan scarf! Did you really think we were going to get a keen trip to Scotland with no tartans? Of course not. This is the Strathearn tartan, I believe?

In other keen news, a few days ago, “royal expert” Kinsey Schofield told the Mirror that a reunion between the Cambridges and Sussexes is a non-starter at this point. Schofield said: “Sadly, I think the only way that things would go back to normal is if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were to separate and Prince Harry returned to the UK solo. However, Harry would never leave his children in another country.” Yeah, not to mention the fact that Harry actually seems to love his wife and he’s not going to give up his marriage so that he can be his brother’s doormat. Why do they keep acting like Meghan was the problem? Even now, after Harry has made it clear that he knows the endgame the Windsors planned for his wife.

I usually LOVE a plaid scarf but I’m not crazy about the Gryffindor colors. The rest of the outfit is really nice. I’m going to be on the lookout for those shoes. I like that the heel is not too thick or too thin.

    • Myjobistoprincess says:

The monochromatic diarhea color is not something I would do – I would have thrown a deep brown in there somehere or a red shirt under that coat, or maybe a pair of shoes that pops. But no fifty shades of beige – is right on. William’s ensemble is of course invisible. I have not even taken a look at him on the picture.

      • (The OG) Jan90067 says:

Agree on the name of that coat/sweater combo. I think they clash with the color of the pants (and “wide legged”… hmmm… WHO NEVER wore wide legged pants before 4 yrs ago… WHO…??? Damn…it’s on the tip of my tongue!!!).

The colors of the tartan aren’t great with Kate’s skin tone…wonder if Granny was trolling when she gave them that title (with the attached tartan) lol.

    • Chaine says:

Aaaand I was just going to say I like the colors of the tartan scarf on with her face! Maybe it’s just refreshing to see her in a color palette that doesn’t hark back to the 1980’s.

  2. Becks1 says:

Are those the same shoes and clutch from yesterday? I can’t tell if the shoes are a little bit clunkier in the heel or not.

As I said in the other post, this is a surprisingly nice look for her, its a nice change to see her wearing functional separates that she can get a lot of wear out of for years to come.

And as for the other bit – at least the royal experts are starting to come out and say it. Harry is welcome back. not Meghan.

    • Amy Bee says:

@Becks: According to stans, the shoes and bag are new.

    • (The OG) Jan90067 says:

Shoes and bag WERE worn yesterday with the blue schmata; she also has on the same £1500 earrings.

    • swirlmamad says:

I think the shoes yesterday were pointier in the toe and a skinnier, maybe stiletto heel. These are chunky-heeled and a rounder toe. Same newborn poop color for both, though.

  3. Amelia says:

The trousers are pretty good. They just don’t look good on her. I’m sorry if that sound harsh but it’s true. I don’t know if it’s the length on her because she’s already tall (hence why trousers like these never suit her) Or if it’s the length of the coat but the outfit just looks mismatched

    • Becks1 says:

I think it’s that they’re too high? High-waist pants can obviously definitely work on a lot of people but I think these particular ones cut off her torso at an odd place. Thats why I think she looks better in the pics with the scarf covering her torso/middle.

    • Victoria says:

I love it tbh. This is one of her better looks.

    • Meg says:

      The coat is very long

  4. local russian hill says:

um no. it doesn’t work. and that scarf with that colorway of beiges clashes. the pants should have been a brown with more contrast to the coat.

    • BothSidesNow says:

Agree!! She should have chosen a color to break up the fifty shades of beige/tan. A darker shade of camel pants with a pop of color blouse, ditch the tartan and the shoes. She should have broken the colors up, as they are all too close in color. Poor Keen Doucheness can’t even dress herself out of a paper bag! She just looks blah and bland, which is what she is.

  5. swirlmamad says:

I really, TRULY cannot stand these two and a lot of it has to do with the vile crap these a-hole royal “experts” constantly spew — and they endorse. The only way the Cambridges and Sussexes will repair their relationship is if he leaves Meghan and comes back to the UK??? Man, F all y’all. I guess we should be grateful this idiot actually conceded that Harry wouldn’t leave *his* children in another country.

    • Kalana says:

This is the same “expert” who photoshopped her face over Meghan’s using Harry and Meghan’s engagement photo! These angry white women are so pathetic.

    • Hrefna says:

The fact she specified that he’d have to leave his children to be accepted back into the Royal Family makes me so livid. Do these people ever listen to themselves? How can they sleep at night?

    • BothSidesNow says:

Agreed!! I am so sick and tired of the constant need to drag Harry into every article and conversation. There will be no repairing of the relationship because Harry is disgusted by the way Baldimort and his Keen Doucheness treated Meghan and they MUST apologize to what they did to her. The fact that Baldimort continues to attack Meghan for the way his bland jealous wife mistreated Meghan is unforgivable and the repair to the relationship is all on Baldimort and his actions. My god people on Salty White Island, get over it!!! Harry isn’t in the wrong here, the RR, The Firm and all of the jealous and petty people are at fault, not Harry and Meghan, so drop it!! Until there is an authentic apology, you can all f@#k off….

  6. Merricat says:

Tartan, after all! I don’t care for the pants, and I don’t think the color palette favors her, but I do like an ensemble, and this is certainly that. Lol
    Also–Harry is never coming back.

  7. Jess says:

I have a long waist and short legs like Kate and so I’m a huge fan of longer, wide legged pants with heels.

  8. Digital Unicorn says:

As i said in the other thread I like this outfit – Massimo Dutti is a good brand, have a few pieces from there (my fave is a soft red leather jacket).

Biege is her colour – in many ways.

    • BayTampaBay says:

Here is the thing with me: I do not think that Cathy ever looks THAT awful based on the average woman of the street. However, with the money she spends on clothes, Cathy never really looks THAT good.

      • BothSidesNow says:

@ BayTampaBay, isn’t that right!! She has access and the money to the best clothes and stylists money can buy but she still and continues to look dull and cannot pull off anything remotely fashion forward or put together a striking ensemble. Keen Doucheness only has two wardrobes, copying either Diana or Meghan. That’s her two speeds.

    • lucy2 says:

I like the outfit as well, though I would have looked for a better coordinating scarf, or done the whole thing a different color.

  9. Aidevee says:

Urgh I hate this outfit! All those swoopy layers of mustardy breige, yuk. The cheesy gold belt just finishes off the naffness – she looks like she’s about to melt into the brown walls of the house. Maybe I’m just not very up with fashion but even the 80s Diana dress from yesterday was better than this, surely!

  10. Sofia says:

Like I said in the other post that I actually like this outfit. I like the pants and while beige is not the most exciting colour, it works here IMO and it’s a nice outfit.

As for the “royal expert” part: not surprised. There’s a reason why all those “come back Harry!” comments just mention Harry and Harry alone.

  11. Watson says:

No. This is awful. Should have done a russet brown underneath the coat and lost the scarf. She’s drowning in beige!

  12. Islandgirl says:

Well the family wants to know why Harry keeps telling his truth. Maybe it is because they refuse to acknowledge publicly that it was Harry who wanted to leave.
They want him back without Meghan. So they intend to blame her for the entire situation….. destroy her reputation and make her persona non grata so that she is not welcomed back in the UK.
I suppose it is easier to spin his return as Harry coming to his senses after being influenced by Meghan.

  13. Isabella Saxon says:

If she had just hemmed the pants properly, this would’ve been perfect. The mud puddle effect hides the cute shoes.

    • Lucy says:

Agree. I love the coat, the pants are actually a good look on her, she just didn’t get the length hemmed the extra inch needed to make them perfect. She actually looks the most modern she has in a while, and the coat is a bit 1970s with the wide collar.
When Prince Philip passed, I saw a pic of him and the Queen in the US for a visit with Nixon, maybe? And it struck me that the queen looked more modern in that picture than almost anything Kate wears. She was in a shift dress, and it just looked decades fresher than Kate.
Anyway, for the love of all the fashion she’s wasting, I hope she starts dressing like this more. Maybe the clothes will trick her into working more or something.

  14. Em says:

    It’s a boring outfit

  15. Betsy says:

I don’t like the outfit, but if I had a plaid that was “mine,” I’d wear it, too.

  16. DS9 says:

I really wish we could introduce her to a new style of shoe. Even when she does a chunky heel, it’s still that shallow foot opening that looks odd with her stride.

A pair of pointed toe ankle boots in the same color would have been lovely

  17. nicegirl says:

I would love that scarf with this outfit in a lovely cream color, I’m thinking. Good work stylist of Countess for switching it up tho, for sure.

  18. Amy Bee says:

She displayed Meghan today, although Meghan would probably not have had a bag. As for the royal expert, she photoshopped her face over Meghan’s in the engagement photo. So like the others she’s unhinged. The royal experts have to accept that Harry’s not leaving Meghan and he’s never going back to royal life. If anyone had any doubts watch his and Oprah’s documentary

    • Sid says:

Amy, first thing I thought when I saw the outfit was that the general silhouette, with the long wide-legged pants and long coat combo, is closer to Meghan’s style than anything Kate normally wears. In fact, it’s the sort of working professional look you might see on some of the continental Euro royal ladies, who actually work.

  19. Scg says:

    This is not her color.

  20. Busyann says:

I think she wears blue so much because of her ring. Which shouldn’t be the case, wear whatever you want, but I think she finds the sapphire limiting.

And this much beige should be reserved for early fall, imo, but sure, it does look nice overall.

  21. Bitchy architect says:

I cant imagine spending that much time with someone you hate.

  22. Woke says:

Always have the impression she doesn’t wear her outfits, her outfits wear her.I don’t know if that makes sense, she had so many phases with how she dresses that you don’t recognize when her outfits match her personality.

    • ShazBot says:

Agree. She just doesn’t have any style or ability to wear clothes stylishly, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing because lots of people don’t have it, but she does have the money to pay GOOD professionals to make her look better, and I do think part of it is tailoring, her clothes aren’t well tailored.

    • (The OG) Jan90067 says:

You have to HAVE a personality to match one.

Kate’s clothes are like Kate. Boring and uninspiring (except for maybe 3 or 4 things, like that white, one shoulder gown she wore to the BAFTAs, and a few things she wore in LA for their honeymoon).

  23. CrystalBall says:

Are all the long coats and bulky jackets worn to cover a baby bump? Summer starts next month so what is the reason for all those heavy outfits?

    • Hrefna says:

It’s been a very cold spring in the UK this year, and she is in Orkney which is in the far north. It’s cold up there!

      • lucy2 says:

I was in Orkney this time of year a few years ago, and was shocked how cold and windy it was! What a cool place though, I loved visiting it.

      • CrystalBall says:

I get that it’s cold there – however it was not as cold in London when she wore two new full-length coats in the merry month of May.
It is rather our of character for her as even on occasions where it’s been just as cold or even colder, she has worn short blazers as well as very tight and short parkas, all of which have put every inch of her figure on display.
We have all seen how keen she is to display her svelte physique in the past – I find it highly unusual that she should suddenly be draping herself in heavy fabrics as summer approaches. An announcement next month will not surprise me in the least – (she has a puffy face to boot). It would also explain why she missed the first three days of the grand tour!

    • Beach Dreams says:

Eh…I doubt it (for now) because just last week we saw her in a tight (yet still matronly) dress and she was VERY thin. It also looks like she’s recently gotten some work done on her face, judging from other photos on this trip and that recent video for the nursing “campaign” that no one knew about. She stops the botox when she’s trying to conceive.

Frankly, Kate’s been dressing up more conservatively ever since those photos of her looking frail at the children’s hospice last summer. She went from deep-cut sundresses to buttoned-up prairie dresses, looser blouses, long coats like this, and suits. In addition to what UK posters are saying about the weather, she’s been dressing up like this to hide her figure for months.

  24. Amelie says:

Decent outfit, though not my favorite coat of hers. It’s a lot of beige/tan. I think she could have worn a shirt to match the shoes and bag, it might have been a nicer contrast.

  25. Kitty says:

Oh God l hate this 50 shades of Autumn beige outfit, too much, bag, shoes, jumper, all pieces are fine, but definitely not all together, seriously who is dressing her !

  26. Lizzie says:

Compared to that tight red plaid dress last week this is good. At least it looks like normal clothes and not a costume.

    • BayTampaBay says:

There is nothing wrong with the tight red plaid dress from last week. The tight red plaid dress just did not look good on long waisted Cathy Cambridge.

  27. Nina says:

The whole outfit is too busy and boring at the same time. The coat is too long and the pants is too busy. Pleats at the waist, a belt, and too long. The scarf looks like something from a thrift shop. Who dresses this woman?
All this tells you, she has no sense of style. Money but no style.

  28. Gina says:

I can’t stand when Kate’s laughing with her mouth wide open. Ugly.
And no, I don’t like the color of her pants. Maybe darker brown would be better?

  29. Eleonor says:

    I have a coat envy.
    That’s all.

  30. Lory says:

I think the colours wash her out. I’m not a fan of the scarf, but at least it adds some colour. Or maybe it’s just her hum drum personality that washes her out?

  31. Hrefna says:

Orkney is one of my favorite places on Earth and I’m envious that these two get to visit there while I’m stuck here in the Not Orkney parts of the planet. What I would give to be in Stromness right now!

  32. Flying Fish says:

Something is off. The pants are not fitting her right, I like the outfit, but I think the wide pant look does not suit her! Her frame does not carry the wide leg look well!

  33. Flying Fish says:

Someone said this earlier, It is the waist, the waist is way too high!

  34. booboocita says:

In the meantime, Baldimort dresses like just about every other college professor I’ve ever had or worked with: jacket, sweater, long-sleeved shirt and tie. Nothing ever changes, except for formal events. I half expect him to suddenly start lecturing about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs or something.

  35. L4frimaire says:

Ugh, so beige and flared. She looks like a parody of a 1970s ad for Charlie perfume. Wear the look, ditch the feminist movement.

    • Nyro says:

The colors are horrendous. Yet again she’s trying to do the whole long coat/ wide leg pant Meghan look but she fails.

  36. mariahlee says:

i like the pants, but im not a fan of this outfit styling overall. the scarf is just ugly to me.

  37. Nyro says:

That scarf is fug. I hate red and yellow together. She looks like a McDonald’s regional manager.

  38. MsIam says:

I like this outfit. I would like it a whole lot better in October though. Seems a bit much for late May, almost June. But maybe its still really cold in Scotland? Anyway, I like camel and I like the scarf too. Lets hope she can keep this vibe up during the summer and put a pause on the Laura Ashley florals and of course Button-mania. We can hope, anyway.

  39. Reece says:

    I don’t dis-like this outfit but it’s just…..
This would have been a moment to get creative with the scarf and, yeah I forgot who I was talking about here.
    It’s better than that blue.

  40. Mooney says:

This outfit is bland, just like her. What is her problem with colours? Either she’ll wear top to bottom same, that still don’t coordinate or she’ll go all rainbow. And I hate those wide legged trousers. They look like oversized bell-bottoms. Someone put side by side pics of Meghan’s Scotland visit before marriage and this picture from today. And man, minus the tartan scarf and crossbody, the whole look is Meghan’s.😯

  41. Keira says:

Camel is not her color. If she has to wear it wear it as pants/skirt; nothing near her face. If she were wearing a coral or red or forest green top, it could be a cute outfit.

  42. jwoolman says:

If the royal experts are yammering about Harry being welcome to return as the prodigal son as long as he dumps his wife and children- they are just making it more and more certain that Harry is not coming back. Hasn’t that even occurred to them? As long as the British environment is so toxic toward his wife, he is going to stay further and further away.

I wonder if William is jealous about Harry’s ability to escape. I think he is also a reluctant royal and really doesn’t want to be king. He would very likely prefer to be just another rich guy with no “royal responsibilities”. Charles may be the last British monarch, since he actually seems to want the job.

How long would William manage as king? Would he try to foist it off on George? Would George and his siblings say “nope”? I think Uncle Harry has already done that.

    • Lady D says:

I think William will be jealous of everything Harry forever. The video making the rounds recently showing Diana with 2yo Harry and an uncooperative William, and Diana says Harry will have all the fun then, and little Willie starts screaming no at them. Little Willie is still in there, still in control and still screaming no. I’d bet money William will be taking digs at Harry with his retirement speech. It will never stop.

    • Beach Dreams says:

“I think he is also a reluctant royal and really doesn’t want to be king.”

You’re correct. He complained about his position throughout his 20s; he’d talk about how much he dreaded his status as future king. William ultimately wants what Harry has: a life of privilege and comfort without the obligations and restraints of the Crown. It’s only in recent years (aka after Meghan and Harry became the superstar couple of the BRF) that his PR has been floating that he’s finally ready and even eager to be king. Personally I think he’s still unhappy about it but just wants to put up a front to compete with H&M.

  43. KatianaD says:

The whole outfit is good and would look even better on a blonde n minus the blue ring. Camel looks a lot better on blondes than anyone, I always find. Kates hair in contrast just makes her look meh in comparison to her outfit, though her hair and makeup is fine it’s just the contrast. Love the scarf

  44. Harper says:

One–Her forehead is bugging me in this outfit. It looks off, somehow. It’s all I can see. Two–I have Kate’s coloring and cannot for the life of me wear beige. It does something weird to my face. As suggested above, a green or a cream top would have set off the colors of the scarf nicer and broken up the endless baby diarrhea color. Three–her scarf looks like what happens to me when I have one of those long-length scarves and have just spent forty minutes in front of the mirror trying to make it look effortlessly chic and failing. Four–those creased wide-bottomed pants are hideous and the coat length is all wrong with them. Five–it’s spring, which is not just a season but a state of mind. She is dressing like fall and Christmas lately. The amount of fabric she is carrying around is so heavy–I will say that she is psychologically covering herself up as protective armor for all this one-on-one time with TOB.

    • Robin says:

Harper, the reason it doesn’t work on you is why it doesn’t work on Kate. You say you have the same skin tone and avoid beige because it washes you out, which is exactly what has happened to Kate here. The colour has even been taken through the peaches of her makeup. I think it looks dreadful and drains her of colour. You know this by instinct and experience, and yet Kate pays a fortune for someone to do this to her!

  45. april says:

Glad wide leg is back again. I just saw a photo in People of Victoria Beckham in wide-leg jeans. I was actually recently wondering when they would return again. Yay they are back!

  46. Frankly, who really wants to be married to a coat hanger?

  47. MerlinsMom1018 says:

I like her entire outfit. 🤷

  48. Red Weather Tiger says:

The pants are a cool beige while the coat and top are warm, this making the whole thing feel wrong and off to me. And the colors in that plaid are awful. Awful on their own, and awful on her. It would have been easy to make this look right.

The coat is beautiful, but that ain’t saying much. Doesn’s she own lots of pink and pale blue coats she could trot out? It is LATE MAY.

  49. Robin says:

I hate this style of trouser on anyone – it just looks so ugly from the knee down and becomes a moving trip hazard.

In terms of the colour she’s wearing. I’ve never seen a palette of colour so unsuited to someone’s skin/hair tone. The photos with her mask off, where you can see the peach blush and lip, shows the palette has been towards pale brown/camel/peach tones, but they just don’t suit her and wash her out.

  50. Likeyoucare says:

Looking by these pictures, all i can see is that kate is dominant than willie.
She must feel she is really powerful right now because of her pr embiggening.
Willie face is just not there, empty, is he on drug?

  51. Beach Dreams says:

…Sorry but this looks awful imo. Too much beige from head to toe and it’s an unflattering color on her. The pants is terrible…There’s a way to do the loose fit and wide leg and this is NOT it. As for him, he looks scruffy. This has been a pretty weird tour in regards to his demeanor and appearance. I still think he’s spiraling after seeing all the big, successful announcements and projects from across the pond for the past few months.

  52. Bea says:

I really don’t like this outfit. The coat is too long and the pants too wide. It looks like they are in a fight to see who is going to survive. I think the coat should be shorter not to overpower the wide pants. But the beige pants… I’m not a fan. I think it is really hard to pull it off beige pants without looking cheap. And I think Kate’s clothes always look cheap even if they are very expensive for the most part. The scarf… well… I think everybody said it better.. it is ugly. Another miss for me.

Besides ugly clothes, this tour’s vibe is really heavy and strange. William hardly ever looks to Kate and you see that she’s always trying to connect and get his attention. When she was “djeing” she was doing her thing until he laughed super loud and she turned back and started laughing and saying it was awful the music she created. Until that point I felt she was even having fun. His energy is not very good these days…
