Jodie Turner-Smith has been in the South of France for the better part of a week. She attended the Cannes Film Festival to promote a movie (After Yang) and do some of the events in and around Cannes, like the Kering Women in Motion events. Jodie has been decked out in Gucci couture and dripping in diamonds and jewels throughout her stay. So much so that it looks like she was targeted in yet another film festival jewelry heist.
It’s believed Turner-Smith, who is in Cannes for the first time, may have been targeted after wearing gold and diamond jewelry from the Gucci High Jewelry line to the “After Yang” premiere on Thursday night. Although the jewelry was immediately taken back following the premiere, it’s believed the robbers may have broken into Turner-Smith’s room believing the items were still in her possession.
Despite the traumatic episode, Turner-Smith carried on with her appearances and work in Cannes, even sitting down with Variety for a Kering Women in Motion talk on Sunday.
Later on Sunday, Turner-Smith tweeted: “didn’t think i would be spending 2.5 hours in the police station on my final day in cannes, but here we are…” A publicist for the actor confirmed to Variety that she was spending time at the police station to report a jewelry theft, which occurred on Friday. The Cannes Police Department did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.
Sources close to Turner-Smith tell Variety that the actor, who was staying at the Marriott hotel on the Croisette, had been at breakfast on Friday when robbers broke into her room and stole jewels worth several tens of thousands of euros. One of the items was effectively priceless: her mother’s wedding ring.
Turner-Smith was immediately moved from the Marriott to the Majestic hotel, a few blocks down the Croisette, and was given a large security detail, which has been accompanying her everywhere. The actor is in town with her one-year-old daughter, which has especially heightened concerns about her safety.
Jesus, her daughter is with her in Cannes? That must have been so scary. And I’m sorry, whenever there’s a high-profile robbery like this at a film festival, it just screams inside job to me. Not an “inside job” as in “Jodie arranged it.” Inside job with the hotel employees and/or festival organizers. Poor Jodie.

It may have been an inside job, but whoever did it doesn’t know enough about loaned jewelry to know that this stuff wouldn’t be left lying around a hotel room.
Poor Jodie. I’m glad she and her daughter are OK. I hope they get her ring back.
They still made off with tens of thousands. Thanks nothing to sneeze at. So, they might not have been looking for the loaned jewelry. They might have targeted her specifically because they noticed that she owned some substantial jewelry during her stay there.

It is! I can’t believe that these thieves thought that they would leave all of the borrowed jewels in their room. But what’s worse is that they stole her mothers ring. That must hurt immensely!!

These do feel a bit “inside”, but at the same time I would think insiders would know she wouldn’t have the big pieces in her hotel room! To my understanding handlers take those back the minute the cameras are off, so to speak. They don’t get tossed on the night stand until the next event! However it could be that someone noted she had some really nice personal pieces and it wasn’t the “big stuff” at all. Sucks all around, either way.
My cousin and his wife are both actors. When they were at Cannes a few years ago, she borrowed some jewels and security came with it. She essentially had bodyguards for the night only they were for the jewels instead of her. Poor Jodie. I hope she’s okay.

I’m assuming the thieves somehow were able to open the hotel safe. Those things are so flimsy I bet anyone could open them… so terrifying. I’m glad her and her daughter were not in the room.
I saw that Twitter post and immediately suspected it was a jewel heist. They have become so prevalent and at this point I wonder why the jewelry houses dont have their own security detail for the items they loan out. They do for the Oscars. Im just glad Jodie and her daughter are okay but it high key pisses me off that she was put in that position by these thieves. And yes – thefts like this are COMPLETELY an inside job. You would have to know her room number have access to the elevators – at most luxury hotels you have to have a room pass in order to even use the elevators. I’ve stayed at my fair share and the elevators don’t even move unless you have a room pass.
I’m glad everyone is ok, but her mother’s wedding ring, hopefully she’ll get it back somehow.
I’m so sorry for her that something so meaningful was taken. That had to be scary, especially since her child is with her. Hopefully the ring is found.

This reminds me: Did they ever find/prosecute the people who stole Kim Kardashian’s jewelry in Paris? I don’t remember any follow-up after the initial reporting about the theft and Kim relating how traumatizing it was for her.

I understand most of this stuff is hand made, but it is odd.
Betcha an employee took the pieces and Gucci has them insured to the nines.
