Given that incels are often not in fact involuntarily celibate but voluntarily choose to not date anyone less than a busty blonde from their pr0n fantasies, we should really give them a new name. I remember seeing that Santa Barbara shooter’s video thinking he was cute and if he’d had a decent personality I would’ve dated him in college, but I’m a brunette nerd girl, so that doesn’t count. (Nor would any sexy blonde who’s actually a full human being and not a sex doll live up to their fantasies).

I would advise reading Laura Bates’ excellent book ‘Men Who Hate Women’ in which she does a deep dive into how these men organise online, and how they are using sophisticated and subtle methodologies to pull boys down the path to misogyny. Targeting boys as young as eleven, in the places where insecure boys gather – like bodybuilding sites, or where they have fun, like gaming. They drop a few slightly sexist memes and jokes and then breadcrumb these boys into misogynistic beliefs and myths. Some become full-blown incels, pick-up artists, and MRAs, others just believe misogynistic lies and myths. It’s extremely disturbing and we all need to know about it. For instance, the role YouTube plays in radicalising them (which is in part down to the way it’s algorithms work in order to make more ad money).

Duck nails are so pre-pandemic. *flips hair and saunters off*

Thank god that incel was a moron and googled how to commit the crime so they had plenty of evidence. He’s looking at life in prison. It’s not obvious from the story but there are several large universities within a pretty short driving distance of him (one being Ohio State) so it could have been absolutely horrific.

    • Lipreng says:

The school he was planning to attack was Ohio University.

      • bettyrose says:

It’s horrifying, and AK-15s are a huge part of the problem, but another huge issue is why so many young men think sex with the woman of their choosing is a right? Before they discover Reddit, they’re already on the path to dehumanizing women. Where does it start?

    • Amanda says:

Between the incels and the anti-vax crowd, there is just so much dangerous rightwing propaganda we are still having to protect our kids from.

I LOVED the Vampire Diaries when like seasons 1-6 were on Netflix, but I never finished the show because I didn’t have a DVR to record the show while it was airing, and then I figured I needed to rewatch the whole show to really appreciate the last seasons. Seasons 1-5 of TVD are fantastic television, and I always argue better than True Blood (that show should have been sooooo muuucccchhh betttteeerrr than it was). TVD Season 6 is okay. I was actually excited to see where the showrunners would take an Elena-less show in Seasons 7 and 8, and it initially grabbed my interest with the flashbacks/forwards. BUT OH MY GOD IT GOT SO BAD. IT IS SO BAD. I HAVE LIKE 2.5 EPISODES LEFT IN THE ENTIRE SERIES AND I HAVE TO MAKE MYSELF WATCH THEM. But man, otherwise TVD is great. If you are into vampires and witches and such. lol Okay, I will stop my rant.

    • Kelsey says:

Did you watch The Originals? I looooovedddd VD and ended up being sucked into TO when the quality of VD started going downhill for me. I don’t think I finished past season 5. I said I’d go back and rewatch the series too, my favorite hot girl just might have me start tonight!

    • Ellie says:

I would never call myself Team Elena (she is basically a useless whiner), but I never finished the show after she left either. There came a point when it got so complicated and seemed to contradict itself at every turn. But ugh it was such a guilty pleasure and I love restarting it in the fall every year because it’s a spooky fall show. I usually burn out on it after a couple of seasons or around Thanksgiving.

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

TVD has always been a guilty pleasure. Couldn’t stand Elena, but she was a necessary moral compass I suppose. And I couldn’t stand Stefan either. He and his overacting brooding then tears then ripper gave me migraines from rolling my eyes too far. My god. Shut up dude. But the rest of the cast and storylines had me binging every season. And then of course The Originals. Fun and entertaining stuff to be sure.

Supporting storylines are usually better anyway. Think about Frodo. He is so entirely NOT the hero lol.

Eh, I don’t feel great about that Catholic Church story. Using app data to out somebody as gay is pretty sh**ty, even if that person is a priest. Yes, there is hypocrisy there, but I don’t like this equivalency being presented that using Grindr is somehow evidence that he may be a child predator. The lack of privacy of app data seems to be the real story here.

    • Kelsey says:

I wish they used the app to out the sex offenders of the Catholic Church instead!

    • FilmTurtle says:

I agree with you, broadly speaking. But this guy isn’t just a random priest. He is a high-ranking member of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops with a LOT of power and influence who has openly called for Biden to be denied communion, openly advocated against gay marriage, and on, and on. The whole time he was sneaking around on the down-low, this jerk was publicly advocating for LGBT discrimination and passing judgment on his fellow Christians (a big no-no). He deserved to have his hypocrisy exposed so he could be prevented from doing any further damage to LGBT families.

(Also, from what I read, the Grindr date was legally obtained and the reporters figured out his identity using publicly available information.)

      • tealily says:

The Grindr data being legally obtained is what I’m talking about… that’s kind of big yikes. I don’t really care that this guy is gay. I already knew the higher ups in the Catholic Church were hypocrites. Calling him out like this feels like it’s playing on homophobia, not combatting it.

      • antipodean says:

The most hypocritical part of this, and the CC is as hypocritical is it is possible to be with their unquenchable thirst for moral superiority, money, and power, is that every ordained priest in the CC swears a vow of chastity. Gay or not they judge others for breaking solemn commitments, but of course the vows are for thee, not me! Their endless misogyny and pontificating is hateful and vile. How they can pretend to stand in authority over others is a loathsome scandal.

  6. Imara219 says:

From what little I know, Bonnie was the show savior and was constantly dumped on….she doesn’t get enough flowers. I remember when the actress who played Elena was originally on Degrassi. I really couldn’t stand her and it just followed kn VD. I couldn’t get past episode 5.

  7. Imara219 says:

Separately of the Catholic Church. What absolutely bothers me about the followers is their lack of organized coordinated condemnation of the Church’s actions and allowances.

  8. jferber says:

I absolutely LOVE Meghan as a judge on Legendary. She is the best. So much fun.
