Katie Couric never felt Matt Lauer was ‘pervy or inappropriate in my presence’

"Amalfi", the first Italian Restaurant By BOBBY FLAY Hosts Grand Opening

Katie Couric’s memoir, Going There, comes out later this month, but we’ve already seen a lot of quotes from it, as it seems like the NY Post and the Daily Mail got their hands on some select chapters. Couric does not come across well, at all. She comes across like a woman who hates other women, who feels threatened by anyone younger and good at their job, who spent years lording her status over everyone else. If the excerpts we’ve seen so far are any indication, Couric does not come across as truly reflective or even ashamed of her old behavior and worldview. Her old colleagues are appalled, but many of them saw behind the mask long ago as well. Anyway, Couric covers the new issue of People Magazine, and the cover story has some excerpts from her book, with a brand new interview where Couric IS suddenly very reflective, especially about Matt Lauer. We’ve already heard some of her sh-t about Lauer, which seemed like she didn’t believe Lauer’s victims and she still considers him a good guy. Let’s watch her damage control unfold! Some highlights from People:

On Matt Lauer: “What upset me the most about hearing these stories [was] that obviously [his behavior] was grossly inappropriate, but also it just seemed so callous. And that’s not the Matt I knew. There’s a duality in human beings, and sometimes they don’t let you see both sides.”

On the Me Too movement: Couric said her thoughts about her former colleague are informed by the Me Too movement that has changed the national conversation about consent and sexual harassment. “I think we’ve learned a lot,” she says of the shift that’s happened since she first entered the newsroom. “I think our understanding of what is a consensual relationship has changed dramatically, and now we know if there is a power dynamic, it can’t really be considered consensual.”

She didn’t notice anything alarming about Lauer’s interactions with other women: “He might comment on a movie star or something, saying, like, ‘Oof, she’s unbelievable.’ He was admiring of beautiful women. But I never felt he was pervy or inappropriate in my presence, ever.”

She thought he was a “player”: “I think we have all these euphemisms that we used to use for bad behavior — and player was one of them. He was a flirt. Certainly I read that he was unhappy in his marriage. But, honestly, I never had that discussion with him. I think it’s hard for people to understand that we didn’t share intimate parts of our lives with each other. I could count on one hand the times that I talked to him as I would a confidant or a really close friend.”

She didn’t know about his inappropriate behavior in the office either: “Our offices were next to each other, and so I think when he engaged in this kind of behavior, he was extraordinarily secretive about it. I [had] heard a few pieces of gossip, that he was involved with an anchor, and I remember thinking, ‘Who knows if this is true?’ I think it was considered nobody’s business. At many news organizations in the ’90s and early 2000s there was a lot of inappropriate fraternization.”

She did know Lauer sexually harassed a producer in 2004: “I remember being shocked and disappointed. But also I think I thought more about the infidelity aspect than the idea that he was taking advantage of someone. The idea of something being consensual was interpreted very differently than it is now. If I had to do it again, I would have made sure that young woman was okay.”

It took her a long time to process the claims against Lauer: “It took me a very, very long time to kind of come to terms with it. Also, to appreciate the damage that was done to women who were taken advantage by many powerful men.”

How she feels about Lauer now: She confirms that she is no longer speaking to Lauer. And while she believes that “we’re starting to look at, as a culture, certain offenses — and I’m not putting Matt in this category, but where is there room for redemption, personal growth and grace, it’s not for me to say with Matt. It’s really not for me to forgive him. This is Matt’s story, and it’s the story of the people he exploited.”

[From People]

Yep, this is damage control from Couric, because the early excerpts/quotes from her book made her sound like she knew some (not all) of what Lauer was doing to women and she turned a blind eye to it, and perhaps is still turning a blind eye. This interview was what people thought her book would be like: reflective on how we, as a society, rationalized predatory behavior and excused powerful men. As uncomfortable as this is to admit and acknowledge, she is right about the “rumors” about Lauer at the time – people thought he was a sleazy womanizer and adulterer, not a rapist. We thought he was having consensual affairs, not abusing, assaulting and harassing coworkers. Except I’m not sure anyone will really believe that Couric had no idea whatsoever, especially since (as she even writes in her book), she was aware that he sexually harassed a producer in 2004.

Katie meet consequences… I hope you two become long-term friends

  2. Truthiness says:

Previously Katie said that Matt pinched her butt a lot. The rumors of Lauer abusing women were out long before he was fired. What she is writing now feels performative and not worthy of an investigative journalist.

    • BothSidesNow says:

I think that what KC is writing is that she knew and didn’t care. As long as she was in her position of power she could care less that he was abusing his position and raping women to fill his little head. KC should get zero compliance in her position referring to ML. She heard the rumors and her first thought was “how do we know this is true”! But she knew he was physically touching women, even her, but she ignored the story in 2004. Completely unacceptable, and her lying for her own benefit to “excuse” her refusal to take action!!

      • WithTheAmerican says:

This. When I was being sexually harassed, many of the women were the least understanding, the most judgmental and even I’d say doing the harassers dirty work for him by bullying and doxing me.

I recognize Katie as one of those “I got mine s#rew you” types. Also she only cared about her position, she would never stand up for another woman.

    • Ry says:

Oh she knew. If she didn’t? Then what a shitty journalist. I don’t know which would be worse for her? Bad at her job or bad at being a human being. Lose lose if you ask me.
She’s after something here, with this book, and it’s not written out of the kindness of her heart by a woman wanting to share. It feels…predatory in its vindictiveness and calculated. She knows she set fires behind her and she’s gonna be affected; she just doesn’t care anymore. She’s like: IF I’m going down? All of you are coming with me. That’s my impression here.
Here’s another thought: I think she recently attempted to revive her career on some way and got rejected. No one bit. So she sat down and figured her kids are financially set, she has enough money in the bank never to work again and this was her shot to stick it to colleagues. Where she miscalculated was that she assumed the average person would relate to her. That she’d get celebrated for her “honesty” and “going there” (cheesy af title but whatever) and that didn’t happen. People turned on her because the one thing she isn’t is relatable. And, she’s no victim, either. The way she sees herself is not even on the map of how others view her. That’s where she went wrong, so to speak. The world nowadays is on suffering no Fools mode. Good.
But, again, she has enough money to live without any financial concern ever again. She’s used to that, however. What’s going to get her crazy is that her formidable ego is about to get knocked out in the first round.
I wish no one ill. Never have, never will. But she created her own comeuppance here and it’s time to take responsibility whether she likes it or not. Personally, I never thought her or Sawyer were very good at their jobs. That’s because people who WERE good at their jobs got thwarted by people like them at every turn. So we all got basic bitches to do interviews on rotation not letting truly talented, ethical journalists in. Cyclical.
      Hopefully times are changing.
Lastly, yes, her book will sell. It might even go on the NY times best seller list. Mark my words. I’m never wrong.
      But at what cost…

      • Truthiness says:

I think she knew – at least enough – and made sure she stayed out of it lest the fallout affected her. If she had listened to someone he raped, like Meredith Viera did, she would have had to take a stand and Katie only cared about her own behind. Lauer’s smug arrogance always bothered me and I didn’t watch him – look how he handled Hilary.

If Katie were good at her job she would still be doing it.

  3. Steph says:

This comes off as so insincere. She is flip flopping on her relationship with Lauer. If she didn’t know him that well, why did it take her so long to come to terms with it? She said it’s not the Matt she knew but then says she didn’t know him that well. Even If she didn’t know what was going on, I still don’t think she cares.

  4. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

“The idea of something being consensual was interpreted very differently than it is now.”

    What the fkn fk, Katie???

    • rainbowkitty says:

      YEP!!

    • rainbowkitty says:

The mean or idea or interpretation of consent has never changed. No has always meant no. Who is this fckn woman??? She reads as a monster.

    • Liz version 700 says:

      This!!!!!!

    • goofpuff says:

Yeah that line was just. No. Ugh. She is awful.

    • Eurydice says:

Disgusting. There is no “interpretation” about non-consensual sex. what’s different is that men are starting to pay the consequences of not hearing “no.”

    • WithTheAmerican says:

Yeah pretty sure by 2004 sexually harassing people who worked for you was not seen as consensual. What a liar.

    • Emma says:

2004 was not the Stone Age. I’m so tired of any foul crime committed over 5 years ago being excused away with “times were different then.” Uh no! I lived through those times and they were NOT that different.

  5. Lizzie Bathory says:

She knew he sexually harassed 1 person. She says she knew about an “affair” in Sochi, which was actually a brutal sexual assault that other people at NBC were aware of & Meredith Vierra reached out to the victim about. And even I, a random person who would put the show on when I got ready in the morning, could tell Matt was an asshole.

I want to read a memoir from Ann Curry.

  6. Amy Bee says:

    Yeah whatever Katie.

  7. KMAC says:

My money is on the fact that these two slept together and if she ever said anything truly negative about Lauer it would come out. I have no other explanation as to why she continues to clutch her pearls and deny truly knowing what he was like. I am supposed to believe a woman who had the pulse on everyone around her, her competition and the commitment to protect her position at all cost had no clue regarding Lauer’s predatory nature. Notice she says he was never a pervert or anything “in her presence.” Yeah, those two had a fling and she protected him and turned a blind eye because it kept her at the top of the hilI. I will never not think this is what happened between them.

    • WithTheAmerican says:

Oh, this is what happened. You are so right! I saw this when I was sexually harassed, the women who went along with it were elevated and then worked to normalize it.

  8. Scarlett says:

As someone who is a survivor of sexual assault and abuse, I have to walk away from this POS that is Katie, she makes me want to reach through my screen and b*tchslap her. Ugh….all the ughs in the land of ugh.

  9. Teebee says:

Wow. This is her “didn’t know him” defence. She makes it sound like she wants to reduce one of the most enduring and well known couplings of on air personalities to a “well, I’d see him around the office occasionally…” Totally disingenuous and makes her look even more guilty of turning a blind eye.

And for someone who ever considered herself hard hitting in the journalistic field, that she could be so close, professionally and literally geographically and still not “know” what was truly going on… I’d worry about her finding Waldo with her kids! This is not a good look for her, and she’s making it worse every time she opens her mouth.

And you know she’d hang out with him again if it weren’t for the optics. She didn’t get it then, she still doesn’t get it now.

  10. Izzy says:

“ There’s a duality in human beings, and sometimes they don’t let you see both sides.”

It’s not duality, people are who they are and what they show publicly is AN ACT. It’s not real.

    • Robyn says:

Well…she’s definitely letting us see her other side with all this recent garbage, isn’t she?

  11. kimberly says:

    “Katie Couric always seemed dark…”

    hahaha

    –Gilmore girls

  12. Ksweet says:

I don’t even think she wrote this flip flop; I think a crisis manager did.

  13. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

She’s a journalist. Was at the top of her field. And an office next to Matt’s. Is she trying to tell me she knew nothing? So again, she pisses on us and tells us it’s raining. Most likely, she had her own secret button with a private entrance into his office.

    • Deering24 says:

For the life of me, I can not understand why she wanted to die on this autobiography/PR hill in the first place. Is she that hard-up career-wise that wrecking-balling her reputation is all she can think to do? Is she angling to be the DSM 6 poster girl for narcissism?

  14. Valerie says:

Those are some big blinders she’s got on there.
