Betty White has passed away at 99

BettyWhite
Beloved television icon, gifted comedian and animal advocate Betty White died yesterday, the last day of 2021, at the age of 99. Betty covers People Magazine’s last issue with the title “Betty at 100.” Sadly she never reached that age, nor did she get to host the movie about her life that will be shown for one night only in theaters on what would have been her 100th birthday, January 17th. Betty was a legend and was adored by fans and costars. She was kind, hardworking, genuine, caring and raucously funny. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 18 years, Alan Ludden, who passed in 1981. She was the last of the Golden Girls and she will be sorely missed. Here is part of People Magazine’s writeup about her incredible life.

Betty White, TV’s perennial Golden Girl, has died. She was 99.

“Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever,” her agent and close friend Jeff Witjas told PEOPLE in a statement on Friday. “I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again.”

Witjas adds, “Betty died peacefully in her sleep at her home early this morning.”

White was gearing up to celebrate her 100th birthday on Jan. 17. Ahead of her centennial year, in a cover story, White opened up to PEOPLE about how she was feeling about turning 100 years old.

“I’m so lucky to be in such good health and feel so good at this age,” said the veteran actress. “It’s amazing.”

According to White, being “born a cockeyed optimist” was the key to her upbeat nature. “I got it from my mom, and that never changed,” she said. “I always find the positive.”

Of course, the iconic actress also cracked a joke about the secret to her long life, telling PEOPLE: “I try to avoid anything green. I think it’s working.”

“We are deeply saddened by the news of Betty White’s passing,” said PEOPLE editor-in-chief Dan Wakeford. “We are honored that she recently chose to work with PEOPLE to celebrate her extraordinary life and career.”

White was a warm and popular presence on the small screen, with a career that dated back to the early days of the medium and that spanned decades. Long before her hilarious turns on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the ’70s and The Golden Girls in the ’80s, in 1952 she appeared in the I Love Lucy-like Life with Elizabeth, a show she also produced.

In 2010, at age 87, she enjoyed an awards-laden resurgence, when, after starring on a Snickers commercial during the Super Bowl, polls and petitions overwhelmingly named her the public’s choice to host Saturday Night Live, emcee various awards shows and even be a sergeant’s date at a Marine Corps ball.

After that, she went on to star and steal scenes on the TV Land sitcom Hot in Cleveland, even scoring an Emmy nomination — her 17th, including seven wins. In May 2012 she also debuted on the NBC comedy reality show Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, a kind of geriatric Punk’d. As always, she proved a favorite. But her passion was always animal welfare; the dues for her fan club, Bet’s Pets, went to animal rescue charities, and she received many accolades for her work for animals.

“I’m the luckiest person in the world. My life is divided in absolute half: half animals, half show business,” White once told TV Guide. “I have to stay in show business to pay for my animal work!”

The 2018 documentary about Betty’s life, Betty White: First Lady of Television, is available on Netflix until January 11. I highly recommend it. Betty did live television at a time when there was no way to tape footage and she had to do the commercials too! Her 1954 live variety show, The Betty White Show, featured the first Black man on live variety television, dancer Arthur Duncan. Southern channels threatened to pull the show and Betty responded by giving Duncan more air time. She didn’t tell Duncan about it and her show was canceled in less than a year despite high ratings. He went on to work on The Lawrence Welk Show for 18 years and has since been inducted into the International Tap Dance Hall of Fame. Duncan is 88 and credits Betty for his long career.

As I was watching the documentary I was struck by how many of Betty’s dear friends have left us over the past few years including Georgia Engel, Tim Conway, Carl Reiner, Mary Tyler Moore and Valerie Harper. Many of them got to reunite and work together again on Hot in Cleveland, Betty’s TVLand sitcom which aired from 2010 to 2015. Betty loved working and she gave us decades of entertainment and laughter. Betty wanted to be remembered as a person who gave most of her life to animals. We will remember her for that and so much more. Thank you Betty for giving us so much joy. We love you and will miss you.

What a remarkable woman. She will always be Sue Ann Nivens to me. Thank you for all the laughs.

    • Mustang Sally says:

Absolutely. In the past few weeks I have been streaming the Mary Tyler Moore Show and am now in season 5 where Sue Ann really starts to get air time. Her comedic timing is gold. She is a legend and the world is a little less bright without her smile, kindness and enthusiasm.

Ed Asner (Lou Grant in MTM) passed in August ’21 as well. At least Betty and her dear husband (and many of her castmates) can be reunited once more.

      • Boxy Lady says:

The last 4 surviving members of the MTM show died in 2021: Cloris Leachman in January; Gavin MacLeod (aka Captain Stubing on The Love Boat) in May; Ed Asner in August; and now Betty White. And she was the last surviving Golden Girl. Two incredible casts that she was an indelible part of and she did them both as an older woman over 50 years old. Cheers to Betty!

      • Lightpurple says:

So did Cloris Leachman and Gavin MacLeod. 2021 reunited the Mary Tyler Moore cast. They’re all gone.

  2. Sunshine Shay says:

Noooooooo, I hate this so much 🙁

  3. Liz Version 700 says:

This was such a gut punch. RIP Betty White you will be so missed

  4. milliemollie says:

What a woman, what a life. Thank you for all the joy and laughs. We’ll miss you so much, Betty. But we understand it was time to be with your Allen again.

  5. greenmonster says:

I was 11 when the Golden Girls first aired in Germany and I loved the show and the four ladies ever since. I was looking forward to Betty’s 100th birthday just like everyone else and I can’t believe 2021 had to throw one last punch in our guts. It almost feels like 2021 was actively searching for the worst thing to do on its very last day.

bmotheprince on Instagram has the perfect Reel about this.

  6. damejudi says:

I’ve been watching old episodes of the Mary Tyler Moore show since I heard the news. It was a perfect way to see out 2021-with lots of laughter. Streaming for free on Pluto (has commercials) is where I found them!

There are so many great not-famous-then actors featured along with so many great character actors from the 70s. Definitely feeling nostalgic, and loved the first appearance of Sue Ann Nivens in season 4.

  7. Bendy Windy says:

I’m sorry she didn’t make it to her 100th birthday, but grateful for all she gave to us.

  8. Mimi says:

A couple weeks ago I was watching old clips of her on YouTube from mama’s family and from when she hosted SNL 😂😂 honestly at first I was in complete shock but then I felt happiness bc she loved such a full happy life and she finally got go be reunited with her husband who she shared true love … just imagine that reunion 😭❤️ Truly a beautiful person inside and out.

  9. LaUnicaAngelina says:

I’m so sad about this news! I’m a super huge The Golden Girls fan and have watched the series countless times over my life. I even remember watching the latter part of its original run in the 90s, and the only season of The Golden Palace after GG ended, when I was a kid. Betty White and the other GG have been a part of my life as far back as I can remember. It sincerely feels like a beloved aunt has passed, and although she was 99, it stills feels too soon. Heaven is definitely full of laughter today!

    • Meg says:

Yes this is exactly how I feel too. The longest show I’ve been watching throughout my life since I was a kid and more recently streaming, has been golden girls. Seeing older women comfortable with themselves with lives to lead things to say and they were really ahead of their time with a lot of the messages in their show-growing up seeing women like that in my formative years really left an impact on me

  10. Rapunzel says:

2020: Hey 2021, I told you couldn’t be worse than me.

2021: I still have one more day.

2020: How you gonna beat me for worst year in one day?

2021: I know; I’ll take Betty White 18 days before her 100th birthday.

2020: Too far, asshole. Too far.

  11. Ninks says:

She was a true legend and a wonderful person. It’s a horrible way to end a pretty crazy year. RIP Betty.

  12. Lena says:

Saw this on Twitter: Live your life so that when you pass at 99 everyone will say it was too soon.

  13. Zapp Brannigan says:

My mother died when I was eleven, but in the few years I had her in my life we would sit and watch The Golden Girls together and laugh our heads off. So thank you to Betty White for being such a large part of my life, for giving me those memories that still make me smile. Condolences to her family and friends.

  14. Meghan says:

I just want to cry every time I see or hear about it. I saw the headline of an article that said she was so famous but you felt like you knew her. Like I said yesterday, I was excited that the Golden Girls comes back on Hallmark every day starting Sunday night because their non stop Christmas movies are over and I honestly don’t know if I can watch it.

I’m so glad we had her for as long as we did, and now she can spend her time with Allen.

  15. Eurydice says:

I’m sad to hear this, but also happy that she lived a long, fulfilled life.

  16. Sue says:

Absolute legend. Thank you for my wonderful childhood memories of watching The Golden Girls with my family.

  17. Bettyrose says:

Oh man, I’m crying again. This was a beautiful tribute to her. Few people have brought us all together in universal admiration as Betty White. ❤️❤️❤️

  18. Tate says:

A bright light has left the world. Thank you for all you did, Betty White.

  19. K says:

She was the best of the best. Like everyone else I was looking forward to celebrating her 100th . So I will. It is bittersweet, but all the joy and love she’s given over the years will never fade. She was a wonderful woman and much loved.

    • Agreatreckoning says:

See…that’s why she was one of the sharpest, wittiest of people. Love it. She wasn’t afraid of death because she would meet up with her husband again. My eyes burst in waterfalls when I read that quote.

  34. Well Wisher says:

Phenomenal talent, all around lovely person. You would be sorely missed.
    RIP. Ms. White.

  35. Seaflower says:

Vale Betty. A comic genius and beautiful soul We were blessed to have her share her talent and vision.

  36. paddingtonjr says:

So sad to hear this, but so thankful the world had her as long as it did. Truly an example of a life well-lived. On a personal note, she will always be Rose Nyland for me. My grandparents were also Rose and Charlie; my grandmother passed when I was a teenager and was just enjoying The Golden Girls. So, in my childish way of thinking it was nice to see a grandmother named Rose who had been married to a Charlie. RIP Betty White.

  37. Leah says:

This one hurt my heart real bad…

  38. MerlinsMom1018 says:

2021 just HAD to be a d*ck on its way out, just had to be…

  39. HeatherC says:

I count myself very lucky that I was alive during a time that people like Betty White and Desmond Tutu walked the earth and shared their humor, kindness, over all goodness and joy with us. They will both be remembered for their achievements, accomplishments and personalities so in a very ethereal way, they never die.

  40. Nev says:

Lovely and sooooo funny woman. Loyal to both. RIP
    I hope your reunited with
    Your husband. Truly.

  41. Rea says:

She was jinxed with all the news about her 100th birthday.

    • Aleja says:

      This!
I am not a superstitious person however, celebrating a birthday before the actual date, it’s a bog no for me. You can celebrate days, weeks, after but never in advanced.
Would’ve been nice see her reach 100, though.

  42. Xilco8 says:

A beautiful and talented lady in every sense of the word. She will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace.

  43. MangoAngelesque says:

She was beautiful inside and out.

  48. GreenEyes says:

I cried.. I lost my 2 favorite golden girls in 2021.. my momma 2/21 and Betty White 12/21 My mom loved her like I did, ironically they could have passed as sisters. Though I didn’t know Betty linke everyone else has stated she felt like family. 2021 was hard. My deepest condolences to Betty White’s loved ones.

  49. JustMe says:

Sometimes celebrity deaths just hit harder than others and this was one of those. I sat in my car and screamed NOOOOOOO when I heard about her passing. She was my birthday twin and just seemed so real and not at all fake. Her friendship with Ryan Reynolds was a treat. She will be missed….someone check on Keith Richards ok?

  50. Barbie1 says:

Just watched her on snl. She was so adorable and so funny. What a loss.
