Last Friday, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas announced that they had welcomed their first child via surrogacy. Priyanka and Nick spent much of 2021 working in different countries and spending little time together, and there absolutely was some gossip that they were possibly heading for a split. It seems somewhat clear now that they were trying to get a lot of “work stuff” done in preparation for the arrival of their baby, and they’ll likely be on parental leave for a while (at least that’s what I hope). I’ve also seen the stories about how the baby might have been born premature, but that story originated in the Daily Mail, and neither TMZ nor People Magazine has confirmed it, and those are the two outlets that would have that scoop. People Magazine has actually been running stories about how Pri and Nick have been preparing for the baby for a while, that they renovated their LA home specifically with children in mind, and that they both wanted to be parents for a while:
Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Jonas couldn’t be more excited to begin their journey as parents. The couple welcomed their first baby, a daughter, via surrogate on Saturday, Jan. 15, announcing the exciting news in coordinated Instagram posts on Jan 21.
“They both are truly eager to be parents,” a music insider tells PEOPLE. “They are beyond excited. Nick and Priyanka have wanted a baby for some time,” adds the insider.
“This is a happy time for all. Nick and Priyanka are definitely ready for this new challenge in their lives. It is something they have both wanted,” a music management source says. “Now is their time, and they could not be more ready to raise a child.”
The music insider adds that the pair “have been preparing” for a baby for quite some time. The Sucker singer and the actress were already thinking of growing their family when they purchased their Encino, Calif. mansion together in 2019, according to a real estate source, who says the couple spent months renovating the residence to make it more family-friendly.
Jonas and Chopra’s newborn joins a trio of cousins to play with, including Kevin Jonas’ daughters Valentina Angelina, 5, and Alena Rose, 7, plus Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s baby girl Willa, 1, whom they welcomed on July 22, 2020. Adds the music management source: “The brothers are overjoyed and have also been eager for Nick to become a father and add to their family.”
I honestly didn’t put it together that Nick was the only JoBro without kids before now. As for all of the repetitive stuff about how Nick and Pri were “eager to be parents” – like, they’re not kids, this wasn’t an oopsie-pregnancy. This is something they’ve clearly been planning out for several years, starting with purchasing their home, renovating the home and making the arrangements for the surrogate. The quotes from “industry sources” seem weird, right? I’m not just imagining that? Like “no really, they actually wanted this kid!” Yeah, we get that?? Also: I’m so happy they have a girl! Yeah! Jonas Daughter!

The energy around this in the media has been weird and, frankly, I think it’s somewhat because all these commentators were saying that Priyanka and Nick were about to break up. So now they’re having a baby instead, so everyone was like “oh, well I know we just told you they were really unhappy, but actually they’ve always wanted to be parents!”
It’s all bizarre but I think there’s been a healthy dosing of people online (and commentators looking for their views) who have been rooting against them. I could make some guesses why but they’re all gross, so I won’t.
As celebs are getting more private and less dependent on media outlets, coverage like this is SO weird. Some very famous people have deliberately had entire marriages, pregnancies, and babies without anyone knowing. Some have entire careers creating and promoting their own content on their own channels.
Long gone are the days of PR people planting stories, setting up pap strolls, and needing traditional media to get their stars attention. More and more, tabloids are left with creating stories from whatever scraps or announcements celebs decides to share themselves. Occasionally, like this, they’re caught flat-footed and have to change course. Definitely weird.
I am right there with you. It’s all so weird, the media was skewering them, as being on the brink of divorce, all weekend. Insto presto baby? Media cannot compute, with anything resembling being a human being.
I think the energy might be weird bc so many ppl were talking shit bc it was a surrogacy. Like “that’s not how real parents do it.” I’m tickled that between the three of them they’ve only made girl Jonas’. They do have a younger brother but I don’t know his parental status.
I think it just surprised almost everyone so the reaction is very weird. I don’t follow them closely at all, but from a distance it seemed like a very rushed relationship. They seemed to get married and then hardly see each other and then suddenly they have a baby.
But oh well, whatever works for them. I’m not here to judge.
If I’m not mistaken, don’t all three of the Jonas brothers have daughters?
TMZ was going to break this story, so they were forced to announce it, apparently hospital staff that are paid by tabloids leaked the story.
A few years ago a L A hospital fired staff for this same problem.
I really love this couple together, though I know others on the site aren’t there for it and are dubious about the relationship. I am so happy for them! Congrats on the birth of a daughter. I love the cousins so far are all girls. Adorable. I wish this family the very best.
