Kanye West pulled out of Coachella & possibly went away to seek treatment

Over the weekend, Page Six had a curious story about Kanye West. The story was basically that Kanye told Kim Kardashian that he is “going away to get help” and that he’s “not making any public appearances or inflammatory social media statements, and he will go away somewhere to get better.” Sources later denied the story, but it actually has been a few weeks since Kanye has attacked Kim or Pete Davidson on social media. Then Kanye skipped the Grammys and everything around the Grammys (no Grammy parties, no pre-Grammy events). Now Kanye has pulled out of Coachella, which starts in a week!

Kanye West will no longer be performing at Coachella this year — leaving the festival with an open headliner spot … and fans without an appearance from Travis Scott. Sources connected to Ye tell us he’s decided to pull the plug on his performance at the 2-weekend-long event in Indio, CA — which starts next weekend. What’s more, we’re told Travis Scott was supposed to join Kanye onstage … so that’s now out of the question as well.

It’s currently unclear exactly why Kanye’s backing out — but he’s clearly had a tough few months — lashing out at Kim Kardashian, Pete Davidson and Trevor Noah, among others on social media. TMZ broke the story, his racist attack on Trevor got him suspended from Instagram for 24 hours last month … he hasn’t posted anything since.

Kanye’s cancelation leaves Coachella with an obvious hole. Billie Eilish, Harry Styles and Swedish House Mafia are still headlining … but there’s clearly a lack of diversity.

Of course, Travis was supposed to headline the festival back in 2020 before it was canceled because of COVID. Travis was then booked for 2022, but Coachella organizers pulled the plug on the idea after the tragedy at Astroworld. Fans demanded he come back with a petition, to no avail. Travis has not performed in a large capacity since.

Page Six is still on the “Kanye is trying to change” beat, claiming that Kanye never even started rehearsing for Coachella and that he’s really committed to staying out of the public eye following months of drama. Their sources say The Weeknd might step in as a replacement, which… would probably be better all-around for Coachella? How many people were going to buy tickets just to see Kanye, honestly? But The Weeknd will put on a show. Anyway, I think Page Six’s sources have been telling the truth the whole time. I think Kanye getting kicked off on Instagram, however temporarily, was some kind of wakeup call. Plus, that was around the same time that Pete/Skete said you wanna play, let’s play.

But he always does this every year almost quartely, he has weeks of drama and controversy and then he retreats. I dont think its the end of the Kanye ‘episodes.’

    • Beenie says:

Exactly. This story is a little too optimistic about Kanye recognising he needs help and wanting to change.

This is the same pattern he has followed for years now. Act out for several weeks, disappear for a month or two, slowly come back here and there, then act out again. Rinse and repeat.

  2. Rapunzel says:

‘Ye didn’t want Pete sending him another selfie from Kim’s bed.

  3. Maddy says:

Kanye was disinvited from the Grammys after coming after this year’s host with racial slurs. He didn’t just skip them.

I hope he’s seeking help, but I seriously doubt it.

    • Jennifer says:

He was disinvited from performing, but not from showing up. I’m surprised he didn’t go and stir some shit anyway, I was expecting him to be all “The Slap? Hold my beer” about it.

  4. Farah says:

“How many people were going to buy tickets just to see Kanye, honestly? ”

I think you’re underestimating Kanye’s popularity. He’s still a huge touring attaction. And his previous Coachella performance is also widely regarded as one of the best performances ever at the festival.

    • whatWHAT? says:

eh, author isn’t saying he’s not popular or not a touring draw, just that he’s not carrying the whole festival.

there are literally a couple hundred different bands playing and I’d wager not one single attendee bought their ticket ONLY to see Ye.

I wonder if this is a stunt to get Coachella to put Travis Scott back in the line-up.

    • Songs (Or It Didn't Happen) says:

Cause Kanye West with Travis Scott is the set that an audience in 2022 is desperately crying out for. Maybe they can even get R. Kelly to sing a few hooks too. 🤣

  6. Colby says:

That’s what they get for booking him. I wouldn’t book Kanye to walk my dog given his instability.

  7. Gabby says:

If I were a stalker who wanted my victim to let her guard down, I might say I was going away to get help too.

  8. Maida says:

I wonder if this is driven, at least in part, by lawyers finally getting through to Kanye that his behavior could hurt his custody arrangements post-divorce. Showing, or seeming to show, some willingness to get help could be a strategic move to make a better case for partial custody.

Just supposition, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

    • Lycee says:

This was my thought as well. He has basically screwed himself in the eyes of the courts with his behavior….so the only way to really get any custody at all at this point is to go get some help. Still, though…anyone with his level of mental health issues will never be awarded the type of custody that allows him to make decisions for the kids.

    • Robert Phillips says:

No. The new Kardashian show is about to drop on Hulu. They have finished filming and Kim doesn’t need him right now. I’ve thought for a long time this was all and act to pump up the numbers for her new show. Just look at Ye. He’s bloated like he’s on steroids. A lot of psych meds do that also. I think he’s been on his med this entire time. And I think this was all staged by him and Kim. Remember how she started her career. This is nothing compared to that. I do believe that Kanye has mental issues. But you can’t stay in the public eye as long as he has and be that far out there. Look at Britney and Lindsey. And don’t give me the crap because he’s a man. If he were really that much of a threat to Kim and the kids Kris would have had him stopped. Kim’s her big money maker. You don’t mess with her.

      • whatWHAT? says:

yeah, I don’t buy any of that.

like Kim would put her kids through that for publicity? she may be a lot of things, but I don’t believe she would willfully and knowingly put her kids through such trauma just to possibly snag a few more viewers. they don’t NEED any publicity for that show.

      • Maida says:

Well, from the outside there is clearly only so much we can know for sure. But it doesn’t seem likely that all of Kanye’s behavior has been about publicity for the Hulu series. And the divorce appears to be real, since a judge ruled to allow Kim to be legally single while the details are worked out.

      • lemontwist says:

        @Robert
You had me at, “And don’t give me the crap because he’s a man.”

Seriously though, that about sums up the depth of this take. You don’t know that Kanye is taking his meds any more than you know whether it’s a bigger deal to Kim that everyone has seen her have sex, OR that North’s father proclaimed to the world that he wanted Kim to terminate her pregnancy.

Also, minimizing Kanye’s abusive behavior to get a jab in at Kris Jenner is lazy and weak.

  9. brubs says:

you guys really underestimate how many fans Kanye west has. A lot of those who disagree with his actions personally would still pay to see him live at Coachella

  10. JRenee says:

I really hope he is getting help because he clearly needs it.
