Was Prince Andrew’s settlement with Virginia Giuffre actually £3 million?

In February, Prince Andrew and Virginia Giuffre agreed to a settlement. Andrew’s attempt to get Giuffre’s lawsuit thrown out of American court had failed, and they would have been headed to trial scheduled during the Jubbly. Soon after the news about the settlement came out, the Telegraph – not a tabloid – reported that Andrew and Virginia had agreed to an overall settlement of £12 million, with a chunk of that money going into Virginia’s anti-human trafficking charity. Personally, I believed that Virginia would not settle for anything less than that figure, and since the Telegraph reported it, I believed that Andrew’s people were the ones actually talking about how much money was involved. I also believed that the Telegraph might have low-balled it. But now the Sun’s sources claim that the settlement was actually a much lower figure?

Prince Andrew’s pay-off to sex abuse accuser Virginia Giuffre was as little as a quarter of the reported £12million. Sources say his lawyers negotiated a cut-price deal of £3million-to-£5million.

That was as much money the disgraced Duke could scrape together quickly to halt her civil lawsuit.

It may explain why Ms Giuffre, 38, was not forced to sign a gagging order as part of the deal — and is now free to write a “tell-all” book, which she promises to do.

It comes after The Sun revealed last week that Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson have bought a £5million house in London’s swanky Mayfair — despite moaning about being hard-up.

A source said: “It was thought, and widely reported, that Virginia got a settlement of £12million from Andrew, but that’s not right. It was far less than that, as low as £3million. No doubt this will have influenced the conditions of the agreement that she was prepared to sign.”

[From The Sun]

No, I don’t believe this. I just don’t. It doesn’t make any sense at all – in February, it was clear that Virginia was going to see it through to the bitter end. Her lawyer had already destroyed Andrew’s defense in the preliminary hearing and it was clear that the court was extremely amenable to Giuffre’s case. She held all the cards – there’s no way she would have settled for such a (relatively) paltry sum. Especially when Giuffre and her lawyer knew full well that Andrew could borrow any sum from mummy. That’s reportedly how he GOT the money for the settlement too, the Queen and Charles signed off on “lending” Andrew the money.

The thing about the british press they make things up even people you don’t like stop believing what they say, we will never know, never have a conformation.

  2. Noki says:

I was always shocked at that 12M figure especially because these people are notoriously tight fisted and hate handing over their own money. But i figured they would do anything to ensure the Queens Jubbly is not over shadowed by this scandal. Even Princess Dianas divorce settlement was shockingly low.

Hmm. Whom do I believe. The Telegraph or the Sun…. Such a difficult choice.

  4. Blujfly says:

I think they’re playing a semantics game with what Virginia personally received versus the full amount of the settlement.

    • WiththeAmerican says:

That’s what I was going to say too. The words are so carefully chosen. Sure, she directly might have been laid $3 M with the rest going to her charity.

  5. KH says:

Could it be 3 mil to her personally with the rest going to charity? That would allow this to be technically truthful while somehow putting on this spin

  6. Harper says:

Nope. This is more reverse-mumbo-jumbo from the Firm as part of the Rehabilitate Andrew Campaign. Virginia had no incentive to stop her case from going forward for peanuts. As if Boies is going to fold his cards that quickly when he has one of the richest women in the world at heel.

    • AMA1977 says:

If Boies took the case on contingency (which is fairly likely, given the fact pattern and identity of the perpetrator), then his firm would generally take 30-40% of any settlement as their fee, which would reduce a $12 million payout to $7.2-8.4 million. If she contributed half (or more) of the total after attorney’s fees to her charity, then that would reasonably leave her “personal” payment at $3-5 million as stated. I agree, it’s deliberately misleading.

Andy was in already in doo-doo because he couldn’t make the payments on the place in Switzerland. Mumsy & maybe Chuck have paid the bills for his messes so far. I hope they have very strict rules attached to the funding of this purchase, including a muzzle for Fergie. I wish they’d bought him a condo in Bermuda, BVI, or some other far-flung location to keep him out of any possible attention as a royal. OTH, Maybe his continued presence around London will give him room for more goofs which could hasten the end of this absurd monarchy.
Chuck couldn’t turn down suitcases of cash from sleazy Saudis because it would hurt their feelings???? Time to quit.

  8. Lucky Charm says:

Most likely the $3 million is what Price Andrew could scrape together himself, and the remainder came from the Queen. So while technically true, still very misleading.

    • Nadine says:

This is what went through my mind. No way did she let him off the hook for $3million total.

  9. Amy Bee says:

I think if the 12 million pounds figure was not true the Palace would have said so.

  10. Elizabeth says:

After her legal fees and the government take their share, I think she would probably end up with around $3-4 million dollars. I’m curious about the part where the article said that she didn’t sign an NDA, meaning she could write a book and make even more money.

    • SAS says:

Yes, I remember the lack of NDA being a part of her negotiations reported at the time. I thought it could be less about a book and more about not gagging her if she’s sharing elements her story in her work relating to her charity.

Really interested to see it outright said here that “Andrew and Fergie” bought the house. Clears up questions about how Fergie could have paid for it when it’s clearly come straight from mummy. Disgusting.
