Edward Enninful teases a British Vogue October cover which will ‘shock the world’

Edward Enninful is the editor-in-chief of British Vogue. He’s Black, gay and powerful in a racist British society. He’s written a memoir called A Visible Man, which is out this week. Enninful has been giving some interesting interviews to promote the book, which is how this headline made some news:

October issue… I don’t think it’s the Queen. They already did a Warhol-esque cover tribute for the Queen just before the Platinum Jubbly. I do think it could be the Duchess of Sussex though!! If it’s Meghan, I will laugh my ass off. I generally assumed that Meghan’s Archetypes promotion would just be in the American media. If she gives an interview to British Vogue to promote her pod, Salt Island will all collectively lose their ever-loving minds. So I don’t know – maybe it’s not Meghan. Incidentally, in Enninful’s interview with the Guardian, he spoke about Meghan’s guest-editing of British Vogue and a lot of other stuff. Some highlights:

On former editor Alexandra Shulman bitching about him when he took over: “We did a handover and I thought she was a lovely woman. I had so much respect for her. Then the press hit – I thought as editors we’d have a certain decorum with each other.” However, “I don’t recall Zadie Smith or Salman Rushdie writing for her at British Vogue, as they would for me, but there you go.”

The racism from the British press: “They called me ‘an outsider’ which was funny to me because I was very much an insider, actually, having started so young. I was ‘the dark horse’. I was always ‘Ghanaian-born’. There was one article that I was horrified by at the time, but now actually laugh at. One of the editors who was up for the job said, ‘It’s as though we entered Crufts and the cat won.’ In the office, people were leaking stories. That I was ‘chaotic’. ‘Spending too much’. All that was…” a breath, “that was shocking.”

How did the criticism make him feel? “Horrible. But I had friends who had been in a similar position before. The first lesson they taught me was, don’t listen, don’t read, just focus.” Which friends? “I called Naomi. I called Rihanna, people who’ve been through it. And I didn’t speak out about it – I just kept going, kept moving forward.”

On Meghan’s guest-edit: In 2019 Enninful received a cryptic email suggesting tea. It was signed “M”. The magazine issue that tea date led to, guest-edited by the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, became an international news story, but the backlash was just as extreme, with Markle criticised for being “divisive” for celebrating transgender women, and too “left wing”. Does Enninful see himself as an activist? “No. But I know injustice. I love fashion, but I also know what’s right from wrong. And when people say to me, ‘You’re so fearless,’ now, you know why. Where I came from, I lost everything. I was thrown out of home. Fear is maybe what makes me… unafraid. And empathic….Equality and inclusivity make the world more exciting. A multitude of voices is always better than just one. Don’t you think?”

Being racially profiled: “And you know. It won’t be the last. As a Black man you have to be so self-aware; you have to know who you are. Nothing is new to me about being Black. At restaurants, my partner is handed the cheque, you know, little things. I ask my [white] assistant to stop us a cab. But these are biases that I’ve known my whole life. The important thing about that moment was I knew I could do something about it, this time. And I have to speak up. But, you know, the beauty about things like that happening is that you see the support, the allyship. Black people can’t do it alone, trans people can’t do it alone, gay people can’t do it alone. Women can’t do it alone. We all need to stand together. Also,” he smiles, “those moments keep me real. And it’s great. It’s like, I’m just another Black person. I like that.”

[From The Guardian]

I would imagine that Enninful is carefully side-stepping conversations about Meghan, which makes me wonder if his book has a lot more about that whole month-long f–kery in 2019. I remember how much pushback he got in 2020 when he said that the reaction to Meghan wasn’t *just* racism, it was about other things too. I’m assuming that Enninful saw those reactions too and he’s trying to navigate that particular subject very carefully.

“At restaurants, my partner is handed the cheque”. Is this a UK type thing? Anywhere I have eaten in the US and Canada the waitstaff ask about splitting and then discreetly place the bill on the table centrally and let the diners decide who pays.

    • HufflepuffLizLemon says:

That may be a regional thing as well. In the South, my husband is often handed the bill and expected to pay. I am white, and when I am at lunch with a Black friend or a POC, I haven’t noticed anything like it, but I am sure his lived experience indicates that people assume the white folks are paying and that sucks. Racism for the win, as always.

    • Becks1 says:

My husband is handed the check at 95% of restaurants we go to. Even if they just put the check on the table, its almost always closer to him than to me. (US).

    • EmpressCakey says:

Can’t quite understand what you are saying here, unless you are a person of color. He is explaining that the check goes to the white person, as if he can’t pay because he is black. If you are white, you wouldn’t experience this because no one would be racist to you.

My husband is a person of color. I remember when we were first together we both became accustomed to me going up to the host/hostess in the restaurant because I would be treated well and he definitely wouldn’t. I would often get the check. Things have changed, but we also live in a very diverse city now.

      • equality says:

Even if white I could also, like you, dine with black people. So I can’t quite understand your point on that.

      • MeganC says:

The point is racism. Wait staff assume the person of color can’t afford the meal and give the check to the white person. Inherent bias. It’s a real thing.

      • SarahLee says:

@equality, she’s not saying you can’t dine with Black people. She’s saying that if you do and you are white, that you may very likely be handed the check, and that this is at a minimum, racial bias.

      • equality says:

But, as I explained, I have never had waitstaff hand a check to anyone. It is set on the table in the center. If I did have that happen and anyone was offended, it wouldn’t have been a place I would have returned to. People I have dealt with ask before even writing up the check. Maybe it’s because I majority of the time go out to eat with groups and a good deal of the time an all-woman or women and children group. I don’t know. I’m not doubting other people’s experience. Saying what mine has been and wondered if it was cultural.

  2. GirlOne says:

Hmm … Liz Truss in the buff? That would be shocking.

  3. Louise177 says:

Meghan isn’t the cover. Edward would be fired. The book is about him not Meghan so I don’t think there will be a lot about her. People were going to attack him no matter what when he got the job but many white people can’t handle it when a person of color is in charge.

    • Lindsay says:

Why would he get fired? Wasn’t Meghan’s issue the top selling issue in British Vogue’s history?

  4. SAS says:

Gosh, it’s interesting how jaded we are hey. My mind went; The Zelenzkyy’s: done, Meghan: done, Beyoncé: done.

    Post-partum Riri?

    • BeanieBean says:

Well, it’s a fashion magazine, so somebody who’s not a size 0? Somebody over 50? Or, himself?

    • NYC212 says:

If it’s truly going to be shocking, it should be Rose Hansbury. That would shock the world and I would buy 10 copies.

  5. D says:

I’ve loved him since they focused on him in The September Issue. He was so honest and asking Grace Coddington what to do when Anna totally shuts you down. She gives him great advice, which was to just keep going, keep at it, do the work and don’t take no for an answer. It seems he took the advice!

  6. Vs says:

Why would Betty be on the cover shocking? Assuming it will even sell….This man saw the pure racism Meghan faced and said it wasn’t just racism… ok; it was xenophobia as well, sexism, jealousy but 90% racism

  7. JoiLuv says:

Could be Rihanna and her baby perhaps

  8. Pumpkin (Was Sofia) says:

Honestly it might be the queen. But instead of a collage cover of old photos or whatever, she does a new photoshoot and gives an interview. The queen giving an interview would be shocking to people.

Other than that maybe a celeb announcing their retirement or marriage or pregnancy but we’re not expecting it.

    • SarahCS says:

We had her very recently (with a pic that I think was from her coronation or around that time) so nah to the queen. We’ve also had the Camilla puff piece inside the magazine and hopefully they will steer clear of royalty for a while now.

      • one of the marys says:

        William and his next wife

      • SussexWatcher says:

One of the Marys – bahahaha. Yes that would be shocking lol. But maybe you’re on to something. Not the next wife, but Peggington confirming a separation or divorce!

  9. Roo says:

I am looking forward to reading his book, but I have a lingering feeling that he sold out Meghan to some extent after the backlash for favors from the RF. Didn’t he the queen profiled soon thereafter? I don’t remember details sadly, but I do recall the lingering feeling of disappointment.

  10. abritdebbie says:

I’m definitely going to have to read the full interview. Edwards life story so far will be interesting enough just with his personal observations and life experiences without any extra bits.

I’m not really into “fashion” but came to comment mainly that the photo/image for the front of his book is amazing. I’m not normally so drawn to images as conveying meaning but it really makes you want to look at it. It took me a while to realise why it is so powerful. He looks completely at ease and chooses to have his eyes closed. The fact that he also has his head tilted gently up, rather than down also removes any passiveness. It is one of the most clever portrayals of power of self. I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for his book. You can see the Edward and the photographer really knew what the wanted to portray.

  11. Jan says:

Now he is selling a book, he is talking about racism, but when he wanted the OBE, it was a different story.

  12. JCallas says:

    It’s probably Rihanna.

  13. equality says:

    An interview with Putin?

    • Noo says:

Assuming / hopping this is a bad joke @equality

    • Emmi says:

I laughed – is that bad? Honestly, “shocking the world” is a big statement to make and I think it’s a mistake to make an announcement that big. What, in these times, can actually shock the world other than that? Of course it won’t be Putin but other than a dictator … what’s shocking anymore?

      • GirlOne says:

Yes, I think he’s overselling it, too.

      • Noo says:

@emmi obvs I can’t say what’s good for you. But for me, pretty awful to even joke about giving Putin airtime in British Vogue considering the ongoing onslaught of Ukrainian people and attempts to destroy their country.

      • Emmi says:

@Noo: There’s haha funny and then there’s gallows humor. Without the latter, we’re all doomed.

      • Noo says:

@emmi appreciate the distinction but for me gallows humour is when it could reasonably happen to me or has happened to me. The depth of suffering in Ukraine is something I am incredibly privileged not to be experiencing RN. Not knowing your situation perhaps you are somewhere in the world where there is a high risk of war?

      • Emmi says:

@Noo: No, I’m pretty safe. But the OP didn’t reference Ukrainians or their situation, they made fun of this very grand statement. It was not directed at Ukraine but at Vogue and at Putin. We’re all in deep shit because of him here in the EU so yeah, I get to laugh at this.

  14. Amy Bee says:

Edward can’t talk too much about Meghan because he wants to maintain Vogue’s cozy relationship with the Royal Family hence his weak answer some years ago. As for the big surprise in the October issue, it’s not Meghan. But I’d love it was.

  15. Lynn says:

Just here to say that his book cover is STUNNING

    • GirlOne says:

I was struck by its similarity to Obama’s autobiography’s cover. Barack doesn’t strike a pose but it’s the grey background with the simple all caps font in white.

    • EB says:

Completely Stunning! It is the most modern and gorgeous book cover I’ve ever seen. The design and photography of this is a piece of art!

  16. Marla Hooch says:

I think it’s Taylor Swift, coming out.

    • Red says:

I think it’s Taylor, too. It’s either her coming out, wedding photos, or her and her baby. I don’t know why, but I’ve always thought she had a baby a few years ago.

Very few things will shock the world.

  17. Harla A Brazen Hussy says:

How about Meghan and Harry posing John/Yoko style? hehe!

    • BeanieBean says:

Ha! I kept that copy of Rolling Stone for the longest time. Wish I still had it now. I’ve just moved too many times.

  18. Nutella toast says:

I’m calling it. Harry in the buff…but artistically done with the headline like “Harry gets vulnerable and reveals the truth” or “Harry has nothing to hide” To promote his book…Or maybe I’m just being wishful lol

  19. Lemons says:

I am voting Anna announcing her retirement.

  20. Green Desert says:

    Meghan and Kate together, lol

  21. Vanessa says:

I don’t why people expected him to stand up for Meghan I was not surprise by his willingness to go along with the racist when it came to Meghan . He was campaigning hard for some recognition for the royals he still dancing around the racism Meghan faces not all black man are ally’s for black woman .

    • MsIam says:

Yeah unfortunately that is true but its still disappointing. Biggest selling issue in a decade and all that. But what do they say, if you want loyalty get a dog?

  22. K says:

What if it’s the queen, Meghan and Harry snd the kids? Esp given today’s development..

  23. Beach Dreams says:

I think it’s gonna be Rihanna with her baby. Definitely not Elizabeth, and I don’t think it’s gonna be Meghan either, especially since she just recently made waves with The Cut. I’m not sure it would be ‘shocking’ if she appeared on British Vogue a month later.
