Shakira bashes the Spanish tax authorities & details her sacrifices for her ex

Because of this job, I read more than my fair share of celebrity interviews and profiles. I have gotten used to fashion magazine journalists soft-pedaling their more sensitive questions and the push-pull of celebrities’ canned publicist-written lines versus actual admissions and confessions. Shakira’s cover interview for Elle’s October digital issue is kind of remarkable because the Elle writer was asking pointed question after pointed question about Shakira’s split with Gerard Pique and her tax situation in Spain. Shakira’s literally going to trial over the tax situation – Spain says she owes millions in back taxes, Shakira says she’s paid everything she owes – while simultaneously fighting for full custody of the two children she shares with Pique. While Shakira deflects some questions, she really tries to answer a lot of them and get her side out.

The end of her relationship with Pique: “Oh, this is really hard to talk about personally, especially as this is the first time I’ve ever addressed this situation in an interview. I’ve remained quiet and just tried to process it all. Um, and yeah, it’s hard to talk about it, especially because I’m still going through it, and because I’m in the public eye and because our separation is not like a regular separation.”

It’s hard on the kids: “It’s really upsetting for two kids who are trying to process their parents’ separation. And sometimes I just feel like this is all a bad dream and that I’m going to wake up at some point. But no, it’s real. And what’s also real is the disappointment to see something as sacred and as special as I thought was the relationship I had with my kids’ father and see that turned into something vulgarized and cheapened by the media. And all of this while my dad has been in the ICU and I’ve been fighting on different fronts. Like I said, this is probably the darkest hour of my life. But then I think about all those women around the world who are going through hardship, who are going through a situation as bad as mine or as difficult as mine or worse.

The most painful thing: “For those women like me who believe in values like family who had the dream, the big dream of having a family forever, to see that dream broken or shredded into pieces is probably one of the most painful things that you can ever go through. But I think that women, we are resilient. You know, we have this resiliency that is just innate in all of us.

The Spanish media depicts the split as particularly nasty: “Honestly, the depiction in the local press here in Spain has been so hard to watch. And invasive for my kids. They don’t deserve to feel observed or watched every second, photographed at school drop-off, or followed by paparazzi. They deserve a normal life. It’s just a total circus, and everyone is speculating about all of these aspects of our, and more importantly our children’s, lives, and a lot of it isn’t even true. Regardless of how things ended or how Gerard and I feel about each other as ex-partners, he is the father of my children. We have a job to do for these two incredible boys, and I have faith that we will figure out what is best for their future, their own dreams in life, and what is a fair solution for everyone involved. And I hope and would appreciate if we were given the space to do that privately.

On Pique already finding a new girlfriend: “I think that those details are somehow too private to share, at least at this very moment—everything is so raw and new. I can only say that I put everything I had into this relationship and my family.

Making sacrifices: “Once Milan started school, at the end of 2014, I knew that my constant travel and nomadic existence had to be put on the back burner and my career had to be put in second gear. I knew that when he started school I had to settle down, plant roots in Barcelona, and be there for him and for Gerard and then later on for Sasha as well. As a soccer player, he wanted to play football and to win titles and I had to support him. I mean, one of the two of us had to make a sacrifice, right? Either he would stop his contract with Barcelona and move to the U.S. with me, where my career is, or I would have to do that instead. And so, one of the two had to make that effort and that sacrifice. And I did it. I put my career in second gear and I came to Spain, to support him so he could play football and win titles. And it was a sacrifice of love. Thanks to that, my kids were able to have a present mom, and I have this amazing bond with them that is unbreakable and that sustains us. You know, that is it. That’s all I can say.

Fighting the tax fraud accusations: “Because I have to fight for what I believe; because these are false accusations. First of all, I didn’t spend 183 days per year at that time at all. I was busy fulfilling my professional commitments around the world. Second, I’ve paid everything they claimed I owed, even before they filed a lawsuit. So as of today, I owe zero to them. And finally, I was advised by one of the four biggest tax specialist firms in the world, PricewaterhouseCoopers, so I was confident that I was doing things correctly and transparently from day one.

The Spanish government is leaking sh-t about her: “Even without evidence to support these fictional claims, as they usually do, they’ve resorted to a salacious press campaign to try to sway people, and apply pressure in the media along with the threat of reputational damage in order to coerce settlement agreements. It is well known that the Spanish tax authorities do this often not only with celebrities like me (or [Cristiano] Ronaldo, Neymar, [Xabi] Alonso, and many more), it also happens unjustly to the regular taxpayer. It’s just their style. But I’m confident that I have enough proof to support my case and that justice will prevail in my favor.

Wow, she’s pissed at the Spanish authorities: “While Gerard and I were dating, I was on a world tour. I spent more than 240 days outside of Spain, so there was no way I qualified as a resident. The Spanish tax authorities saw that I was dating a Spanish citizen and started to salivate. It’s clear they wanted to go after that money no matter what. Even for the next few years, I was traveling the world, working nonstop while pregnant or with Milan as a baby, when my C-section had barely closed. They knew I wasn’t in Spain the required time, that Spain wasn’t my place of work or my source of income, but they still came after me, with their eyes on the prize.

[From Elle]

I came out of this with a real admiration for Shakira and her strength in dealing with what sounds like a huge mountain of bullsh-t. She’s right about the Spanish press, they’ve been going after her HARD and I know I’ve only seen a fraction of it here in America. To be fair, this isn’t just on the Spanish media though – Gerard Pique has been smearing her a lot in recent months and clearly he wants the world to know that he’s moving on with someone much younger and that he’s thrown away Shakira like she’s yesterday’s news. The Spanish government has also been quite gleeful in the way they’ve come after her too on the tax issue, which I still believe is a massive scam on the government’s part. And yes, Shakira is making it perfectly clearly that she was the one making sacrifices for Gerard and for his career and now he’s being this absolute POS. Ugh, I cannot stand him. Anyway, this was surprisingly dishy and I love that she talked about everything.

I’ve been a huge Shaki fan for more than 20 years now and she still impresses me. Her wisdom, grace under pressure, candour, and resiliency are amazing.

She’s one artist whose truth is always in her music. You could tell her and Pique were struggling when “Don’t Wait Up” came out, then “Felicitas” was pure fire and straight from her heart.

Pique is a douche and should have been kept only as a F boy, he’s not a good or honourable man.

Can’t wait for the new album, it’s going to be amazing!

  2. Harla A Brazen Hussy says:

Ugh, I’m so tired as a middle aged woman to constantly see women used, discarded, gaslighted, ignored and patronized by men all over the world. I’m tired of us, especially WOC and Indigenous women, having to once again be strong and fight for our rights while holding our families and communities together because so many men have found something else that they want to be doing. I’m sorry to hear all that Shikra is going through and hope that she has a strong support system around her.

    • Emmi says:

People ask me why I have no interest in marriage and children. Well, if Shakira has to put her career on hold for her husband, what chance do women with a 9-5 have? All my girlfriends had babies in the last 3 years. I can already see who’s going to have some regrets, whose husband is not to be counted on. This entire concept isn’t for me and frankly, it doesn’t serve women period. Burn down the system.

I wish her all the best. Find a nice stable guy and enjoy life, Shaki.

  3. Mouse says:

Mad respect for her. Was not aware of her side of it.

If the Spanish authorities do find a way to clawback the taxes, she could sue PwC for negligence..

    • SarahCS says:

My understanding is she’s already paid the taxes they claim she owed, and the interest that had accrued. They are going after her AFTER she’s cleared the supposed debt. It makes no sense to me,

      • Decca says:

“I had to settle down, plant roots in Barcelona, and be there for him and for Gerard and then later on for Sasha as well.”

So… that’s where she admits that she lived in Barcelona for years and years and yet lied and said she didn’t to not pay her fair share of taxes. Rich people need to pay taxes. I’ve always liked her, but, please, pay your taxes. And good on Spain for not letting it go.

      • Nicole says:

Decca- I think she means she planted roots only after her child started school-
The years in question are before. At least that’s how I understood the wording.

  4. Steph says:

Odd. He has no pics of this new girl on IG but Shakira is still all over it.

    • Stef says:

The new girl is nothing special. Saw some pics a few weeks ago and he was getting trashed on Twitter.

  5. Lolo86lf says:

Living in Spain has become toxic for Shakira for obvious reasons stated on this post. But before she can leave the country and move near her family in Miami (where she is adored) she has battles to win: Resolve her tax evasion issues and win full custody of her children. She is the mother and the kids belong to her, not with the dad. I am sure he will be happy to be free to date all the women he wants. Once she settles in Miami, she will most likely start to make more music for us to enjoy.

  6. Thinking says:

She always looks good (and what seems like a natural way), even in magazine shoots where you have to do the weird sultry pose. I would never guess she’s 45.

The rest I don’t have much of an opinion about. I assume her boyfriend has problems though to throw this relationship away.

  7. HeyKay says:

Wow. She is really being targeted by the tax authorities.
They are using her and lying about things to “make an example” and crooked to try to blackmail her for even more money.

I wish her speed in getting full custody and winning against those tax cheats.
Miserable scum partner. She is better off without him.

  8. NEENA ZEE says:

The part about sacrificing so her kids could have roots and putting her career on the back burner so her husband could play football and win titles sounds like… Gisele and Tom, right?

    • BeanieBean says:

Exactly what I was thinking. Kudos to both Shakira & Gisele for standing up for themselves, not taking things quietly, and doing what’s best for them & their kids. They are both very very fortunate to be in a financial situation to do that. Those Spanish tax authorities are diabolical!

  9. Twin Falls says:

I’m worried for her. How do you win a legal battle in a corrupt system?

Someone asked on the Jesse whatshisname used to be on grey’s thread how often a woman sacrificing her life and goals for a man works out for her. If it didn’t work for Shakira, well then…

    • Mara says:

Is there any evidence that the Spanish tax administration are corrupt rather than just keen on making sure rich people pay their taxes?

      • Diana B says:

I don’t know. She’s always been dodgy with taxes. Rumour has it here in Colombia that her foundation is for evation purposes. And this is not a recent rumour. So I don’t know. Piqué on the other hand is a known assh*le and he doesn’t deserved semejante mujerón. She’s going through it right now, but hopefully she’ll come to see she’s so much better without him.

    • Stef says:

Apparently, the Spanish government is known for doing this to famous people and they lose 50% of the time…

      • Mara says:

Interesting, I wish my country’s tax administration was as aggressive with rich tax dodgers.

Out of curiosity, what is the source that says they lose 50% of the time?

Also, are there any stats for how much they bring in/lose through this strategy? Government tax lawyers aren’t always that well paid, so even if they only win some of the time, they might still be making a net profit and bringing in a lot of money for the Spanish Government to redistribute to schools, hospitals, welfare etc.

      • MMRB says:

oh please, you have to be living in a cave to not understand, that historically Spain has an incredibly corrupt Administration. You can just look upwards to the Monarchy as an example. Of course they are trying to line their pockets when they can.
Yes, rich people should pay taxes. poor people should pay taxes. Do you like roads? they don’t get made by the magic unicorns. However, Administrations shouldn’t potentially misappropriate taxpayers money and then try to get more by making potentially false claims.
There are good and bad people in all economic circles of life.

  10. The Voice says:

Shakira and Gisele both put the breaks on their mega hot careers for their men to go out and try to win more titles. And in the end the men disappointed them by cheating and going back on his word, respectively. And once again, shoving all child-rearing responsibilities on the women. It even happens to the hottest, most talented, and richest women in the world. Wow.

Women deserve more than this. I think our natural tendency is to sacrifice for everyone else’s sake at our own expense. I see this with all of my friends who work full-time and have kids. Husbands think nothing of dumping all the responsibilities on the wives who have to juggle it all. Marriage doesn’t benefit women at all from what I’ve seen. I consider myself lucky bc my husband does a lot for the kids and for us but even so I’m still exhausted with all the mental load that I carry. I want to tell my daughter that she doesn’t have to get married and she doesn’t have to have children. But if she does, establish her boundaries firmly and never let them slide. No one will prioritize you. Only you can.

  11. Myeh says:

All I have to say about Spain is they are so casual in their sexism and bigotry. I had a Spanish woman argue with me over her superiority. Her Spanish was better than any other Spanish… The gloves really came off when she found out I was Muslim. She gleefully brought a book to a friendly gathering showing the festival of Moros (Muslims) where they set fires to celebrate how they got rid of the Muslims. Grown ass woman proudly showing and telling a majority of white woman how to celebrate the expulsion of Muslims while baring her teeth at me.

    • Jaded says:

Eek Myeh, how horrible! My experience with Spaniards happened when I lived in Mexico. They were very arrogant and dismissive towards indigenous Mexicans. Many had lived for several generations in Mexico yet they still referred to themselves as pure-blooded Spaniards and were damn proud of not having a drop of “Indio” blood. Some things never change as we’ve seen with the way the BRF treated Meghan.

      • Lemons says:

This is such a weird flex, especially considering many Spaniards have Muslim/Arab ancestry. And in general, why do they still care? In 2022, the world is burning, no one gives a —-.

  12. Jaded says:

Gerard Pique is your typical party boy/soccer star and there are plenty of receipts about his philandering while still with Shakira. Bar Refaeli was one of the first. These guys have such HUGE inflated egos that they think they’re above the law. I’m sorry she’s having to go through this and especially sorry for her kids, but she sounds strong and grounded, and surrounded by people who love her. I wish her best of luck on this journey.

  13. Lizzie Bathory says:

As an attorney who practices tax law, I think Shakira has been badly advised here. The presumption under Spanish law is that if you’re in country for 183 days per year (easy to prove via customs logs), you’re a resident. You’re *also* considered a resident if your spouse & minor children live in Spain, which was almost certainly the case for Shakira. The only way to escape that presumption is to prove you are a resident of a different country–which you have to do every year via a special certification.

So my guess is Shakira’s team messed this up, payed the back taxes with interest & penalties after it was uncovered (perhaps years later), but it was too little, too late.

    • Kebbie says:

Not sure if it makes a difference, but they were never legally married

      • Lizzie Bathory says:

I didn’t know they weren’t legally married, but having her minor children reside in Spain would also be enough to trigger the presumption that she is a resident.

    • Wilma says:

Apparently her parents moved to Barcalona to live close to Pique in 2012 while Shakira claimed to live in The Bahamas. The evidence supposedly is going to show she had weekly hair and beauty appointments and I understand she had a company that did some money laundering. It will be interesting to see what’s going to happen in this court case and what’s true and what isn’t.
I don’t know about all the other celebrities Spain has gone after, but they were successful in getting Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar convicted on tax fraud.

  14. HeatherC says:

I know nothing about taxes lol so I can’t comment on that.

She is so gorgeous. Why did they insist on her lips parted empty expression? I hate that pose on magazine covers, it doesn’t take advantage of any charisma and charm the subject, like Shakira, has. Plus it’s boring since we see this pose on at least 8/10 of fashion covers.

  15. Nicegirl says:

So helpful. Grateful. Still alive and glad. If it can happen to Shaki right thank you

  16. Mothra says:

When I heard she got together with him years ago I was like, why? A talented, intelligent and graceful woman with a typical soccer player… I knew it would come to this. Men are already spoiled enough, if they become world wide famous athletes, they can do anything. Real flesh and blood scams.

  17. Alexa says:

The children belong to their mother and father and it’s clear she’s been happy living in Spain for 11 years. She can live wherever she wants. What is clear? She doesn’t live mostly in the Bahamas. She’s a tax dodger. Eight years just seem like a lot. Columbia and Spain could use those taxes. I was a huge Shakira fan when I was younger, but I’m less with age. Is it sad that they broke up? Yes, but hopefully they are able to amicably co-parent. This relationship lasted longer than I and most people thought it would. He was 23 and she was 34 when it started. He was accused of cheating earlier in the relationship several times she stayed and had children. He doesn’t seem that different it just looks like he just decided to leave. They do leave. I’m sure she sacrificed it happens. Okay. If you want to do it, if you don’t want to scale back your career don’t. I’m not married and I’m childless. I’m a bit matter of fact. I would probably as well. I would like to see my children and have time with them. Hopefully the father is active and not just into work. Would it change my involvement? Probably not. She’s attractive and she seems okay for a tax dodger. Relationships end and people cheat. I’m sure she’s unhappy about her family breaking up I would be too. I wouldn’t immediately look to move if I had kids, but she has tax issues and hopefully she pays them from here on out.

  18. lionfire says:

Spanish press is on her because she’s a star there:mostly because she was life partner of one of the most famous spuccer players there. And that is totally ok-her career was slowing down when they got together, his was heating up/continuing on a very high note. TbH i don’t think that has much with sexism, but with the fact that her career is pretty much on hold (at least for european market) and this is practically a typical “soccer divorce” full of scandal and cheating+tax evasion. Any press anywhereould be on that thing like flies on honey, ffs.

And don’t get me started on tax evasion…the state isn’t so tupid, they don’t go after the rich unless there is some 100%evidence of the fraud/evasion because everybody knows the rich will do anything and everything, even spend half of it on lawyers, just to escape the guilty verdict. She just thought she was smarter than spanish authorities and now she’s extra salty bc it turns out-she didn’t get to evade successfully, her spanish honey has been cheating on her and she can’t move somewhere else so easily because her children are born and living there!!

To this day and age, I can not understand how anyone with access to google expects fidelity from elite sport players, especially footballers. Especially Shakira, she’s from South America, ahe knows there aren’t dirtier dogs than soccer players. They always, always cheat.
