Hilary Swank had morning sickness: ‘When you have double, it doubles the hormones’

Hilary Swank is pregnant with twins. She’s in her second trimester and working full time on her show Daily Alaska, in which she both stars and produces, and doing the promotional rounds. That’s exhausting for anyone, let alone a pregnant woman. But as Hilary found out, everything gets doubled when you have two little babies growing inside you. While speaking to Extra TV, Hilary said she’s finally feeling better after a rough first trimester with morning sickness. She blamed having double the hormones for feeling so poorly, but she said ultimately, she’s just happy to finally be pregnant.

A few weeks ago, Swank announced she was expecting twins with husband Philip Schneider.

“Extra’s” Jenn Lahmers spoke with Swank, who is “feeling better” in the second trimester of her pregnancy. She revealed, “I was having some bouts of morning sickness for a while there. My friends tell me when you have double, it doubles the hormones, double the sickness, double the everything.”

Swank noted that she’s thought about being a mom since she was a “young girl.” She added, “It’s nice to be here and be pregnant.”

Not to be a jack@$$ but I didn’t have morning sickness. It sounds like it sucks, though. I have no idea if multiple fetuses increase morning sickness, but I don’t doubt it felt that way to Hilary. There are so many changes to the body in the first trimester anyway, it seems cruel to double that. But as Hilary said, if you’ve been waiting as long as she has to get pregnant and battled health issues, being chained to a commode for three months is no big deal.

The good news is that if the whole “double everything” theory is true, then Hilary should be feeling great right about now. The second trimester was my favorite. I thought I could take over the world during the second T. I didn’t, I sat on my ass and ate bon-bons, but I felt like I could.

This mom of twins felt cheated as she didn’t get any morning sickness or cravings. Really wanted to be able to eat pickles with chocolate ice cream and have an excuse for it.

Same. Mom of triplets, and I never had morning sickness or any cravings at all. Some food aversions, though. Certain food smells were just disgusting to me.

Not that it was a cakewalk. I don’t think I took a fully deep breath for months, thanks to the pressure on my rib cage. Sleeping was uncomfortable. And I was very tired.

I had more morning sickness (a total misnomer) with my singleton than I did with my twins-
but man, I was so uncomfortable I’m short waisted to start with, so there was not much room. And the symphysis pubis pain, good god. I was so big at 38 weeks that I was “sleeping” in a recliner and begging for a C-section. My boys were 21″ each, and weighed in at 6#1oz and 6#10oz. I can only imagine how much bigger they would have been in two more weeks!

Got twins a few months ago!
It doesn’t double the hormones, but you do get more than with just one baby. I didn’t vomit once, but otherwise it was a very difficult pregnancy, couldn’t walk from month 5 ; people thought I was due any day when I was only 7 months along, by the end I was massive, could barely sleep, and only sitting up as I couldn’t sleep on my side, and forget it on my back, impossible.

    Best of luck to her!

Edit – this whole ordeal made me even more pro choice. Going through this hell when it’s not something you really want?! It’s inhumane. Go vote, American celebitches!

      💯

I was curious about the statement about hormones doubling so Googled it. Found out you can possibly have 30% – 50% more hormones for any multiple birth than a singleton. Never really thought about it as I had zero morning sickness with my 3 pregnancies. I feel sorry for those who go through morning sickness.

    • Erin says:

I have twins and you do have more hormones because your HCG levels are higher and go up exponentially compared to a singleton pregnancy. I literally tested on the first day of my missed period because we were trying and the line was so dark so I was like, ummm something is going on here and this wasn’t my first pregnancy. I was actually nervous that it might be a molar pregnancy.

I do agree with you on it being terrible though. I had the same thing, I was so uncomfortable for so long I cried a lot during the end, couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t walk, and don’t even get me started on the pressure down below. I had boy/girl, so they both had their own sacks and placentas. They also both thought it would be cool to be breach so I had two heads in my ribs for weeks. My son came out with the weirdest head shape even though it was a c section because there was no room! I went full term for twins too. It was absolutely miserable.

Omg, E- I should have read your post before adding mine, above. I started sleeping in a recliner because it took five separate maneuvers to turn over in bed! Don’t know how I managed stairs and a two year old at the time.

      • Bella says:

Yes! On the recliner sleeping. Another twin mama with no cravings but man, I ate!

I had morning sickness but nothing horrific.

Heartburn kicked in around 5 months still I decided (joking) that it was a good time to evict them.

I gave birth at 27 weeks and I can’t imagine how much worse things would have gotten going there whole 40 weeks. I think I was already 46″ waist size by 22 weeks

      • NotSoSocialB says:

Haha! I was 132# when pregnant with twins… stopped looking at the scale when my normal 5’5 1/2″/ 130# crested over 200#. Crazy stuff. Currently 56 and 142#.
Our bodies are so amazing, my word.

I was also very lucky. Only mild morning sickness early first trimester. I did have this bonkers craving for tortilla soup. It was a freakishly hot October in Southern California (like 100-110 degrees) and I wanted tortilla soup every single day. I would have committed a felony for tortilla soup.

I have friends who suffered from hyperemesis their entire pregnancies and struggled to keep weight on. One was accused by a nurse at her OB/Gyns office of having an eating disorder. She felt like death and then had to basically defend herself to this person at every visit. She had public insurance so her options were severely limited. She did have a healthy baby! So, happy ending.

Horrible morning sickness with my 2nd the first 3 months. Couch to bathroom to bed and rinse and repeat. That was with just one and I cannot fathom double that, oof.

Woke up the very first day of my 4th month and proceeded to eat anything that wasn’t chained down. MerlinsDad got extremely tired of taco runs I will say that! 😎🌮🌮

Wishing her and her babies all the health in the world!

  5. Hootenannie says:

First trimester of first pregnancy here and the “morning” sickness is the worst, and far from limited to the first part of the day. Nonstop nausea since week 6. I actually lost a little weight. I am physically aware of my body at all times in a way I wasn’t before because things are so uncomfortable. Before I got morning sickness I thought I wasn’t going to get it and had the passing thought “oh I hope I get it, if I don’t have morning sickness maybe I will feel like things aren’t progressing normally.”

I take it back! This is gross.

Has anyone here watched her show Daily Alaska? I only saw it for the first time yesterday and was wondering if I should give it a go.

I’m going to say something that I know will bring the rocks down on my head…but does anyone else get bored of celebrities who get pregnant and start talking about pregnancy? I’m a mum and I think, here we go again. And I wonder what it must be like for women and men who can’t have children or don’t want them. I suppose they don’t read the articles. It seems like magazines at the moment and in recent years are so packed full of articles about babies and kids, and particularly celebrity babies and kids. It wasn’t always like this. I’m going to get it from people telling me it’s an important life event, and for women in particular it is lived experience and we should talk about it. It’s just a thought. And, yes, I can ignore the articles. Perhaps I’ve had too much of the kids this half term and should just get a cup of tea and sit in a quiet room…. Right, standing back for the onslaught!

    • whatever says:

I get where you’re coming from. It is a lot of the same stuff over and over, so I can see where it would be boring. But I also feel like, “well, they’re pregnant! What else would we expect them to talk about?” When I was pregnant I felt like it pushed every other lucid though out of my brain, and all I could think about was the pregnancy. Anytime anyone wanted to talk to me about anything but the pregnancy I was secretly resentful and frustrated, thinking, “why are you trying to talk to me about anything BUT the pregnancy? Don’t you realize that’s all I’m interested in right now?” And then the kids were delivered and I turned into a reasonable person again that was capable of holding a conversation. And then all anyone else wanted to talk to me about was the kids, and I was like, “I need a break from talking about the kids!” Pregnancy brain is real, folks.

No rocks here. That whole pr business is pretty misogynistic, so it can be triggering for some of us. Stick around! This is a great place- been here for 10-15 years.
