Elon Musk dissolved Twitter’s board & he’s removing safeguards on political content

Elon Musk’s Nazi hellsite is crashing and burning faster than many predicted. It seemed inevitable that the crash would come, but Musk hasn’t even “owned” Twitter for a full week. Musk will likely end the “free” verification part of Twitter and he’ll begin charging people for verification and he’ll raise the cost of Twitter Blue services. Musk also dissolved Twitter’s board of directors and made himself the sole director of the company.

Elon Musk has dissolved Twitter’s board and made himself the “sole director” of the company. All previous members of the board have been removed from that role, leaving only Mr Musk as a director, according to a new filing. The action was taken on Thursday as part of Mr Musk’s $44bn (£38bn) purchase of the company, according to that same SEC filing, which was made public on Monday.

The board had previously included its chairman, Bret Taylor, as well as recently ousted chief executive Parag Agrawal; in all, it included nine directors.

It is just one of a number of substantial changes that Mr Musk has already made, within days of buying and taking over the company. Others include the suggestion that he will set up a council that will review content moderation decisions, that he will be firing significant number of employees, and that he could allow previously banned users back onto the platform.

[From The Independent]

In addition to firing most (if not all) of the Twitter executives and dissolving the board, Musk has “pulled more than 50 of his trusted Tesla employees, mostly software engineers from the Autopilot team, into his Twitter takeover.” I’m sure the Musk fanboys will insist that these crazy-billionaire schemes are more four-dimensional chess moves from Musk. The same four-dimensional chess which had him buying an overvalued product on borrowed money, then driving that $44 billion investment into the ground in less than a week?

Musk is also removing a lot of safeguards and controls around political content on Twitter, which is particularly scary given the midterm election is one week away. If sh-t goes down next week – and I’m certain it will – that might mark a mass exodus from the Twitter platform. Reputable media outlets, government officials and businesses will all decide that Musk’s Nazi hellsite is not worth it. Advertisers will pull out. What happens then?

I also predict that Musk will end the suspension of Donald Trump’s account this week. Buckle up, bitches.

Twitter under Elon is an absolute zoo in the seventh level of Hell.

    • goofpuff says:

I’m pretty sure he’s tanking Twitter on purpose (probably paid to do so by his investors for political reasons) so people will run to another social media company he has invested in himself. And of course because he is a great example of failing upwards.

    • Tacky says:

Call your Congress members and demand an end to Spacex funding. This man has gotten rich off the backs of US taxpayers and that needs to end.

  2. Sarah says:

Not my theory so I can’t take credit but someone said that he won’t give Trump back his account, because then Trump will get all the attention and Elon wants all the attention for himself. Ah you gotta love narcissism… /s 🙂

He’s disabled Molly Jong-Fast’s Twitter account. He’s a premenstrual 11 year old girl. Apologies to premenstrual 11 year old girls. I was one once.

    • NotSoSocialB says:

WTAF???? Molly???? What a brittle candy-ass he is, wow.

    • Ameerah M says:

This is not true. She is on Twitter now and has stated that her account has not been disabled. It was an issue on her part where she accidentally “nuked” her own account while deleting old tweets.

  5. MerlinsMom1018 says:

Deleted my Twitter. I was iffy about it before, but elon solidified my decision.
I am on a “family only” page on FB and my cousin keeps that on a hard lockdown. That’s the only social media I have now. No TikTok, no Insta, nothing else.
    Happier that way

  6. Eleonor says:

I hope advertisers will run away massively leaving him with an empty box and making him loose billions.

    • whatWHAT? says:

If it becomes the cesspool that many think it will, full of full-on Nazis and other fascists, bigots, incels etc…then advertisers will def quit en masse.

it’ll be all Tesla and MyPillow ads.

  7. ariel says:

Read this and went straight to the twitter site and deactivated my account.

  8. Alexandria says:

He doesn’t like us. Why stay?

  9. TIFFANY says:

I don’t think the media will say or do anything because this is the same media that wants Casino back to office because he is entertainment for them.

Our world is getting more frightening every day.

  11. Lolo86lf says:

If most of my fellow Democratic progressive resisters leave Twitter I will be sure to abandon Twitter myself.

He does look like a toad in the first photo… Horrible human being…

  14. Flowerlake says:

First there was Livejournal. They messed up and nerdy fandoms moved to Tumblr.
Then there was Tumblr. They messed up and nerdy fandoms moved to Twitter.

There needs to be a good alternative with enough people settling there and another migration of nerdy fandoms will start.

And with nerdy fandoms I specifically mean fandoms that have mostly women: certain types of anime, sf/fantasy shows, Kpop, symphonic rock etc that tend to be progressive leaning politically.

  15. Michael says:

I am hearing that the former head of Twitter is starting another social media company himself. I will be interested to see what he does now that he has cashed out. In the mean time if anybody has a viable alternative to Twitter I would love to check it out

    • MsIam says:

The rumors say that Jack Dorsey is partnering with Musk on the new project, so no it sounds like the same old, same old in a different box. I’m glad i never got on Twitter, I spend enough time on the internet as it is.

      • Michael says:

Oh. That sucks. I am sure somebody will see the opportunity to fill the void of Twitter haters soon

    • Betsy says:

I just googled it and Bluesky is independent from Twitter. It was started as a separate though funded by part of Twitter but according to an article on Indy100 (I can’t remember the rules here regarding links), it’s completely separate and will have nothing to do with Twitter proper.

  16. Lolalola says:

This guy gives the definition of douche a new low. I hope he loses every last dollar as his stupidity burns Twitter to the ground.

  17. Valerie says:

It will devour itself. Not, unfortunately, without innocent people being hurt by threats and racism. and sexism But even Parlor realized that they can’t just let their users say whatever they want without consequences. Conservatives and Retrumplicans (and let’s face it, there isn’t that much difference between the two) live in a fantasy world.

  18. Isabella says:

The blue check system was always ridiculous. Twitter would never say exactly how it worked or precisely why some verifications were accepted and others not.

Most of us were never going to be blue checked anyway. So I find the screaming about the new pay system funny.

    • Ameerah M says:

The blue check system was put in place to avoid impersonation as famous and well-known people were having accounts made by other folks to impersonate them. It made sense at the time but has become overused IMO.

  19. Kim says:

I disabled my personal twitter account and that of my small company (we only had 2500 followers, but still!!) yesterday after Elon’s tweet-and-delete about Paul Pelosi. What a joke of a social media site. I hope others will break up with Elon too.

  20. Maida says:

As others have said, there’s a good chance Musk is destroying Twitter on purpose — at at least the partial behest of the Saudis and the Russians. We need to keep steadily in mind that the Saudis are Twitter’s second-biggest investors.

But I think it can also be true that Musk is way out over his skis. By dissolving Twitter’s board and replying in a fawning way to people like Catturd (if ever a username said everything you need to know about someone), Musk is making it clear that he IS Twitter. So if there is any site moderation at all of far-right wackitude, he will 100 percent be blamed for it and the trolls will come after him. And if he nukes moderation entirely, advertisers will flee.

I think Elon is the dude who kicked the hornet’s nest. Alas that he has enough money and fat cat friends that this won’t stop him from doing yet more dumb and destructive things.

  21. Colby says:

I know two people who have worked for his companies – one at Tesla, one at SpaceX. Both said the companies were absolute sh*t shows. Completely unorganized, rapidly changing priorities, piss poor leadership. Remember, Tesla only stays afloat thanks to massive govt subsidies.

    Twitter will be the same.

  22. Abby says:

I got twitter in… 2008? Something like that. I’ve had my account for a long time. I used to use it a lot. Now I mainly just read. I almost never post. This new direction makes me want to delete my account just on principle’s sake. It’s wild how he’s sinking this ship.

    • Peachy says:

I’m considering it as well. I have 2 accounts…one political which I haven’t logged in to since before the 2020 election and one I’ve used for entertainment purposes, though haven’t posted in several months. I should remove both just to add to the number of deleted accounts. It’s going to be a troll haven anyway so why bother?

  23. MY3CENTS says:

We didn’t he just buy parler? It already a fascist racist platform, less work.

  24. Lightpurple says:

If you haven’t deactivated, go on a check out Stephen King’s feed. (If you don’t follow him, you should, especially for updates on his dog Molly the Thing of Evil and his takes on Maine’s Susan Collins). Elon is begging him to stay and trying to negotiate a price reduction with him. MUSK IS GROVELING TO STEPHEN KING. It’s glorious

    • Lizzie Bathory says:

It’s actually hilarious. Elon doesn’t understand what he bought. He’s not playing chess & he’s not even tanking Twitter on purpose. This is the same “genius” who made an inflated offer to buy a company with no due diligence & only closed the deal when he was going to lose in the Court of Chancery. Now he’s cutting costs & trying to raise revenue because he’s desperate. There’s nothing more to the “plan” than that.

Personally, I’m loving it & staying on Twitter.

  25. Cynic says:

I went off Discord months ago because it got too political. I stopped reading Tony Ortega because he left his blog and went to Substack. Now Musk took over Twitter. I swear to god, if I have to go back to Facebook or learn TikTok I am going to learn how to code myself.

  26. TeamMeg says:

The deeper conversation around free speech needs to happen. The lines were traditionally drawn well outside of my comfort zone (example: peaceful Klan marches allowed, although KKK stands for hate), but I was able to understand why those lines needed to be where they were. Can’t have it both ways.

  27. Elsa says:

I deleted my twitter accounts. I refuse to support this dangerous man.

I don’t know if this is a mistake though?? Maybe I should stay and fight.

  28. j says:

God…he makes me miss Zuckerberg. I didn’t think that was possible.
