Nancy Pelosi is ‘traumatized’ by Republicans ‘joking’ about her husband’s assault

Paul Pelosi, the husband of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, was violently assaulted in the Pelosi home in San Francisco in late October. A stranger broke into the Pelosis’ home late at night and accosted Paul when he was in bed. The man was “looking for Nancy” and he clearly planned to hurt/assault/kidnap/murder Speaker Pelosi. Paul Pelosi managed to call 911, but when the cops arrived, the man hit Paul in the head with a hammer several times. Paul Pelosi was rushed to the hospital and he’s stable, although he’s still traumatized. Speaker Pelosi sat down with Anderson Cooper on CNN last night and she gave an update on Paul’s attack, his recovery and how she feels about all of this. Speaker Pelosi is 82 years old and she’s still sharp as a tack, but you can tell that she’s still really shaken up about the assault on her husband and she’s experiencing her own trauma about it. Some quotes from the interview (the video is at the end of the post).

Where she was when Paul was assaulted: “I was sleeping in Washington, D.C. I had just gotten in the night before from San Francisco… And the — I hear the doorbell ring, and it’s 5-something… [I think] it must be the wrong apartment. It rings again, and then bang, bang, bang, bang on the door. So I run to the door. And I’m very [scared].” She said she saw Capitol Police outside of her door, and they told her they needed to speak with her. “I’m thinking my children, my grandchildren. I never thought it would be Paul because I knew he wouldn’t be out and about. They came in, at that time we didn’t even know where he was or what his condition was. We just knew there was an assault on him in our home, and now they were taking him to a hospital, which turned out to be [Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital]. … It wasn’t the closest but it was the right place to go for that.”

Paul Pelosi is such a baller: As Nancy rushed to the hospital to see him, Paul was already out of surgery. According to her son Paul Pelosi, Jr., her husband said, “Oh, your mother’s going to be very happy because the Ravens won last night. [We have a] Baltimore connection,” Nancy said, adding that her husband’s comment reassured her that he would be okay.

Misinformation: “For me, this is really the hard part because Paul was not the target, and he’s the one who’s paying the price. It’s really sad because it is a flame that was fueled by misinformation and all of the rest of that, which is most unfortunate and has no place in our democracy.”

Republicans need to stop being f–king terrorists: “You would think that there would be some level of responsibility, but you see what the reaction is on the other side — to make a joke of it — and really that is traumatizing, too. But nonetheless, forgetting them, there has to be some healing process. Democrats and Republicans, members of Congress, anybody can be a target. In our democracy, there is one party that is doubting the outcome of the election, feeding that flame and mocking any violence that happens. That has to stop.”

On Trump & Musk: Nancy went on to address those like former President Donald Trump and Elon Musk who have “[cast] doubt” on attacks that have occurred. “It’s really sad for the country that people of that high visibility would separate themselves from the facts and the truth in such a blatant way. It’s really sad, and it is traumatizing to those affected by it. They don’t care about that obviously. But it’s destructive to the unity that we want to have in our country. There has to be some adult supervision on the Republican side in order to say, ‘Enough. Enough.’”

[From People]

I remember a time during the W. Bush administration where there were moments that Republicans were faced with some dire realities about the state of their party and the future of their party, not least of which was the financial collapse of 2008, in the last months of the Bush administration. Instead of really dealing with their own nonsensical social and economic policies, 2008 marked the dividing line when the GOP made this turn to Sarah Palin/Donald Trump cult-of-personality fake-populism politics. Trumpism took it to a scary new level, and Americans are still grappling with it, clearly. My point is that I don’t even think there are “adults in the room” in the GOP anymore, which is why we should treat the GOP like what it is: a Christofascist terrorist organization.

Very ironic when Republicans want to claim to be the party that is toughest on crime. This instigating crime and being anti-gun control even in aid of protecting the most vulnerable in society is very hypocritical.

    • Laura says:

Thanks for pointing that out. I had not thought about it like that. So much hypocrisy.

    • Erin says:

Speaking of most vulnerable of society, there is a case that is headed to the Supreme Court that started in my town with a daughter suing the nursing home her father was placed in because she believes he wasn’t getting the care he deserved and she actually said he was treated worse than a dog, which I believe. So basically the Supreme Court is about to rule whether people who depend on federal assistance programs can sue over rights violations even though it has been settled precedent for decades. So get ready for the republican court to throw all of those vulnerable people in the garbage by ruling against them.

    • Margo says:

“Tough on crime” equals “throw the people we hate in jail and give plenty of guns to the rest.”

“ Democrats and Republicans, members of Congress, anybody can be a target”
No Speaker Pelosi, only those against the Republican Party are the targets. Even after all of this, she’s still both-sidesing and bipartisaning. I can’t believe it. From her blocking the House from pursuing impeachment and then hamstringing the investigation to bipartisaning her husband’s attack…we are so effed.

    • Ameerah M says:

Steve Scalise, Republican Rep was shot by an unhinged attacker some years ago. So she isn’t wrong on that front. As for the impeachment. She blocked it because it was a waste of time. Dems were not the majority in the House or the Senate and it wouldn’t have passed. Empty gestures are a waste of time politically and Pelosi is smart enough and realistic enough to understand that. This is also why she reminded Repiubs that they are not immune to violence against them either. Because they only care about themselves anyway.

      • Ana170 says:

The issue isn’t that she didn’t impeach him on the other charges while Republicans were in control of the Senate. It’s that she didn’t add them to the list when Democrats regained control, thereby letting him slide on so much.At minimum he should’ve been impeached over the Mueller report, letting his family have access to state secrets, and the situation at the border.

    • AnneL says:

To be fair, both sides have been targets. The January 6th mob wanted to hang Mike Pence, a Republican through and through and Trump’s VEEP. When a shooter attacked that Congressional baseball game, Steve Scalise was gravely injured. He’s a Republican. Both sides were targets there.

In general, you’re right. I hate both-sider-ism too. But in this moment I feel like Pelosi is trying to show leadership in a moment of crisis. I’m inclined to let her handle a terrifying attack on her spouse in their home in her own way.

      • Queen Meghan’s Hand says:

Steven Scalise?? You’re comparing what happened to Steven Scalise to Paul Pelosi?
First of all, Steven Scalise was not the only person shot at that baseball game in 2017. Second of all, Scalise was not specifically targeted. Third, the shooter was not part of or linked to any militia or terrorist group. The attack on Paul Pelosi is incomparable to what happened to Scalise.
Paul Pelosi’s attack is directly part of an increasingly frequent violent attacks and threats against Democratic politicians, election workers, teachers. School board members, queer people, and trans children and people because of the Christofascist terrorist organization known as The Republican Party.
Mike Pence refused to support Trump on Jan 6 and so was targeted. He went against the party.
And I have every right to comment on how the third in line to the presidency, how one of the most powerful people in the country, even after a horrific event that effected her so personally, continues to minimize the danger The Republican Party poses to me and my family by calling their leader a child, by bothsidesing terroristic violence propelled, funded by that Christofascist terrorist organization.

    • cer says:

Except Trump was impeached twice. She didn’t go for impeachment immediately because she knows her caucus and the votes weren’t there immediately.
She also knew that he’d never be convicted in the Senate.

    • Sue E Generis says:

There’s a news story this morning about a man who murdered his neighbor because he thought he was a Democrat. Ohio, gun. He didn’t know for sure (not that that would excuse anything), he just suspected.

    • Bad Janet says:

She is trying to get them to see their own beloved party members can also be victims.

It won’t matter. They’re too tone deaf to hear anything that doesn’t fit their narrow, pre prescribed reality. That’s the same mentality that allows them to believe garbage like “the election was stolen” and Q anon conspiracy theories.

  3. NCWoman says:

“which is why we should treat the GOP like what it is: a Christofascist terrorist organization.” Thank you for saying it “out loud.” Mainstream media won’t say it, and I get so depressed–but maybe the smart gossip sites like this can help people see the truth of what is happening and help us save ourselves.

    • Bad Janet says:

      Yup.

I have been giving major side eye to anybody who still votes Republican. You can be conservative and not be MAGA dumb. But you can’t vote for Republicans and claim you don’t support Trump, their coux, the current Supreme Court, and ALL the other messes Trump made which we are still trying to recover from. If you vote for fascist props and puppets, ipso facto you support fascism, Trump, and his trail of dumpster fires.

  4. ML says:

My heart goes out to the Pelosis! No kidding Nancy felt traumatized—the political situation is completely out of control. I’m glad Paul is recovering, but the crap and misinformation campaign is really difficult to take.

    • AMA1977 says:

My heart breaks for the Pelosi family and Nancy in particular. She is someone I truly look up to and revere, and I have so much respect and affection for her. I really, really hope that some chickens start coming home to roost for the right. They encourage hatred, lies, violence, incivility, and insurrection in the name of power, and I want to see them get what’s coming to them.

  5. lucy2 says:

I can’t imagine what their family has been going through. I hope he is able to fully recover.
I’m sick over what some people in this country will do.
    VOTE.

  6. Well Wisher says:

I would be surprise, if Nancy was unaffected by the inhumane treatment towards her husband’s attack.

Hoping that they heal and recover from that unnecessary and brutal attack.

    Sending healing energy.

  7. Nicole says:

This hurts my heart. I talked to my dad about this and he was astonished. I told him that he shouldn’t be if was paying attention. Something like this was inevitable and just a matter of time.

  8. Nicegirl says:

    Christofascist terrorist organization

    DAMN STRAIGHT

    • Twin Falls says:

      +1

    • Otaku fairy says:

Yes. Conservatives are usually not even expected to act like adults, everyone is just supposed to tiptoe around them. It’s always, “whose mind do you think you’re changing” instead of asking THEM, “why do you expect to be coddled into basic decency?”

  9. Joanne says:

My heart breaks for the Pelosi’s. No one should have to be mocked after a brutal, violent assault. Nancy Pelosi is as tough and strong as they come but even she has a breaking point. I wish a quick recovery for Paul Pelosi and peace for their family.

  10. Brassy Rebel says:

The Republican ads linking every Dem member of Congress or Dem candidate for Congress to Nancy Pelosi for literally years have had the desired effect of demonizing her and them. She is now right up there with Hillary as a substitute for the anti-Christ. And they’re about to be joined by Kamala Harris. It’s the politics of misogyny.

  11. Still In My Robe says:

EVERY SINGLE U.S. Celebitchy MUST VOTE TODAY!!!!!! You can read this website while you wait in line. (It’s midterms—so, sadly, there won’t be lines.). Take a friend with. The person you know who’s never voted before but stands with you on issues? You take them. You make it your goal. If you don’t show up, your opinion will never count.

Midterms are won by popular vote!!! This is not the presidential election. Maintaining control of the House and taking control of the Senate very literally means the assault weapons ban can be passed and abortion protections can be codified federally!!!! We can fix the economy and work on crime between election cycles. We cannot restore rights one party literally believes you should not have if they have any power levers to stop it. This election determines that for at least two more years. Vote, vote, vote!

  12. schmootc says:

No joke, it really does seem like it’s only a matter of time before we get another civil war. If they think this type of situation is funny, it’s a short trip to making jokes about the same type of attack where Pelosi ends up dead. And when you start that, where does it end?

I think Steve Scalise is the worst, but I certainly didn’t think what happened to him was anything to laugh about. He’s a human being and has a family and that must have been awful for him and them. But then that’s the difference – I can imagine how that might feel and have compassion for someone whose politics I loathe.

    • anniefannie says:

Compassion or lack of it, this is it, full stop! I used to bitch about the GOP’s lack of civility but this a new a whole new low that really is frightening. I’ve had a few friends claim a “both sides”
and my response has been “Really? YouTube Pelosi’s remarks after the Scalise tragedy! One of the few times I’ve seen her truly shaken….

  13. Jackson says:

Yeah. Lovely poll watcher while I was waiting in line to vote this morning….’oooh Paul Pelosi….you just knoooow something is going on there. Something about that story just isn’t right…giggle giggle.’
    Idiocracy, indeed. Le sigh.

  14. Lightpurple says:

The Pelosi family needs to sue several people, starting with Elon Musk, Jeremy Boreing and Ben Shapiro of the Daily Wire in their individual capacities, and in their corporate capacities for defamation and loss of consortium. Yes, I know there is a harder standard for public figures but Paul Pelosi’s status as public figure is limited and all three showed the necessary malice aforethought, particularly Boreing, whose directives Musk considers.

  15. FHMom says:

What happened to Paul Pelosi is a nightmare. That anyone would think otherwise is horrifying.

  16. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

This whole has been horrifying. And then to watch what happened turn into a political punch line? My heart is so unbearably heavy.

  17. Emily_C says:

On Fox News, they were incandescently infuriated about a study that showed having cats around helped college students. They said any college student who wanted a kitten or a puppy should get smacked instead.

Republicans are literally a party of hate. Nothing but. They exalt hate, they worship hate, hate is their reason for being, and anyone who says “Maybe we should do things that aren’t hate,” they want dead.

  18. jferber says:

Fascists always consider the pain and suffering they cause other people funny and unimportant. This country had better wake the fuck up or we’ll be Nazi Germany sooner rather than later.
