Angelina Jolie is shutting down the London-based foundation she started in 2015

Just before Christmas, Angelina Jolie announced that she was ending her 22-year partnership with the United Nations High Commission on Refugees. Jolie had gone from a UNHCR goodwill ambassador all the way up to a special envoy. It was said that Jolie’s focus from here will be on smaller NGOs doing work on the ground in and around refugee crises. She’s also planning to focus more on protecting children from abuse domestically and internationally. I believe that we’re about to see a new era of Jolie’s activism and I’m very interested to see where she goes and which organizations she highlights or partners with. But she still has some other remnants of her old life to clear up – she also just closed down the London-based foundation she started in 2015. From the Mail’s Eden Confidential column:

Angelina Jolie worked so closely with the two political advisers she met through her United Nations work with former Conservative leader William Hague that they set up a charity together to tackle issues such as violence against women.

I can disclose that The Jolie Dalton Helic Foundation was, however, formally closed down today.

The Hollywood star had made a huge financial investment in the charity, which she co-founded with Baroness (Arminka) Helic and Chloe Dalton.

Jolie has put in £1.7 million since it was founded in 2015, according to records. But it now has reserves of just £52,947 and owes £1,524 to creditors.

[From The Daily Mail]

“It now has reserves of just £52,947 and owes £1,524 to creditors…” I would assume that the bulk of the money Jolie put in (and others put in) has been donated and put to use over the past seven years. It sounds like Jolie, Dalton and Helic were winding down operations for a while and the foundation simply wasn’t their priority anymore. That “debt” is probably just the outstanding bills on whatever space they were using for the foundation. Anyway, I wonder if there’s anything more to this story – like a falling out between the women – or if it’s just a simple matter of shifting priorities and wanting to use certain resources in different ways.

I don’t think anything happened to this friendship since these ladies publicly stood by Angie after Brad’s abuse.

It seems Angie is keeping the foundations she runs under the children’s names and is their legacy. But she is moving on from other initiatives she is legally involved with.

I can easily see her becoming a force within US regarding women and children rights. She has worked with women from both parties and clearly knows how to lobby and get laws passed. I think she will continue to do that.

If this woman thinks she can meaningfully impact domestic abuse and misogyny in the US, then please. Ditch everything else and go right ahead.
The heavily entrenched and insidious nature of it is just demoralizing.

Also the loose ends kind of thing you might do if you were preparing for a more political role? Just a thought.

I don’t think she’ll run for office. She very well could but it doesn’t seem like her? Idk how to explain it. I think she’d be more background/bts.

I would hope not. we really don’t need another inexperienced celebrity in politics

Normally I’d agree but given her decades of work with political organizations and NGOs, Angelina is more qualified than a lot of people. Especially for the House—look at some of those characters.

    Breathtaking woman

She’s definitely still friends with Arminka (one of the codirectors) so I don’t believe it’s a falling out. I do think it may have to do with her branching out.
I found the records and it seems the charity was on its way to being dissolved last summer. And Arminka and Chloe both resigned in October. I think she’s branching out and figuring out what she wants to keep running (her other charities- the ones in the kids names- are still running and a new appointee was just announced for KIND on Tuesday) and what may need to be let go.

Agree. Foundations sunset (spend down their funds and cease operations) all the time, and often for pretty mundane or undramatic reasons.

Disappointing as someone who works here, on the ground, with refugees. It would be better if she’s severing ties because of lack of funds to say so, because you can’t imagine the expectation someone like a celebrity creates when they decide to work with UNHCR or other smaller NGOs. And also, she knows that she has to work either with government agencies or UNHCR to work with refugees in camps, because of the high level of protection – you can’t just work in camps or with refugees, it’s a ton of work just to get the permissions.
She’d do well to work with those who are resettled in the countries taking refugees, if she’s able to.
