Evangeline Lilly wasn’t polite when she turned down Whedon’s ‘Wonder Woman’

Here are some photos of Evangeline Lilly at last night’s London premiere of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. She wore Naeem Khan – a silver, spangled gown structured with some kind of cape/poncho. She had a lot of fun with it, twirling on the red carpet to show off her dress. Incidentally, the reviews are out for Quantumania and they’re not great. It only has 49% at Rotten Tomatoes.

Meanwhile, Evangeline has managed to shrug off any conversation about her anti-vaccine stances and activism, so thank the Marvel machinery for that. But she did get a question about Joss Whedon and his script for Wonder Woman circa 2006:

Evangeline Lilly recalled turning down the lead in Joss Whedon’s never-produced Wonder Woman script. During her appearance on Thursday’s episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Golden Globe nominee, 43, told host Josh Horowitz, “I had no desire [to do it],” adding: “And he could tell.”

The Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star said, “I was too young to be that polite.”

Many perceived Whedon’s 2006 script as sexist after it leaked online in 2017, when Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman premiered.

“It didn’t appeal, and there was nothing about the meeting that like jazzed me or made me think, ‘Oh, I’ve gotta do this.’ Nothing clicked. Nothing felt good,” Lilly said of her meeting about the 2006 script. “I am way too authentic for my own good. I mean, it’s not good. If I am not impressed, you’ll know. And maybe you shouldn’t know sometimes. And I think there was maybe even a little bit of offense taken.”

However, added Lilly, “I was okay with that. I was okay with burning bridges. I was okay with not having everyone in Hollywood just wanna work with me.”

While I hate her anti-vaccine stance, I’m fine with her career stances over the years – after she became a big breakout star on Lost, there were a lot of people trying to make her into a movie star or shape her career into something which didn’t feel authentic to her. She turned down a lot of work in those years and it doesn’t sound like she has many regrets. I didn’t pay attention to the leaked Whedon script, but I have no doubt that it was trash.

She later back-peddled on her anti-vaxx comments which….blah. The damage is done, lady. She also co-opted pro-choice language to describe her anti-mask, anti-vaxx stance which is pretty much unforgivable to me.

She never actually says that her reason for passing on the Whedon movie was because the script was sexist so she gets no point from me.

Also, that hairstyle is effin TRAGIC. I don’t even mind the buzzcut so much and she’s beautiful enough to pull it off but the color is absolutely atrocious on her.

She looks a hot mess with that hair and dress is not as cute as she thinks it is. I read the leaked Wheadon script and it was hilarious, cringe, hot garbage.

Just wanted to point out that in addition to her anti-vax nonsense she was whining early on about COVID restrictions (despite reportedly having a father in poor health) and her support for the right wing extremists who caused such harm and pain to citizens of Ottawa, Canada last year (with a not so hidden goal of undermining democracy) is well documented (on her own Instagram!). In short? She’s awful. I have no interest in supporting anything she does.

Was listening to a review of this movie: one person liked it well enough and one hated it. But both agreed she is barely in the movie. They described her as an afterthought with one or two big moments. I have a hunch Marvel is just about done with Wasp.

I wish they would make Michelle Pfeiffer the Wasp and forget Lily. Michelle is more than up to the task

That’s a movie I’d love to watch! I enjoyed Ant Man in spite of her but I can’t say I’m overly excited about this one. They seem to have lost something of late and Thor 4/Wakanda Forever were let downs to me.

as usual, no consequences for anti-vaxxers who want all the “rights” they think they are entitled to but no responsibilities whatsoever. she’s one of those people who believes her own hype and that she’s entitled to everything but seems to have no regard for other people. i won’t be seeing this movie and hope this will be the end of her character.

I’ve disliked her for sooo many years. And now she’s actually giving me concrete reasons (other than her ridiculous ‘I used to cry myself to sleep, asking God to make me ugly!’)

  6. Normades says:

Dislike her so much for her anti vaxness but admit I think the dress is amazing. Would love this on someone else who could wear the sh$t out of it (her posture is terrible).

  7. Emily_C says:

Everyone should be rude to Joss Whedon at all times. He’s disgusting. And he’s not even talented.

  8. TIFFANY says:

She is not that good of a actress. She wasn’t that good on Lost and I don’t believe she was getting every offer under the sun either. We only have her word. If she was getting all the offers, all kinds of things would have dripped in the circulars.

  9. Emmi says:

“I am way too authentic for my own good.”

Is that the new “I’m a perfectionist.” ? It sounds like she’s humblebragging her way through this interview and I hope that’s not actually her authentic self.

I’m actually thinking that hair color is natural and she’s letting her gray roots show. Look how light it is in the front vs the back. Seems naturally white there. If that’s the case I give her props for looking natural. She doesn’t look botoxed either which is pretty impressive for Hollywood. Otherwise I agree about her trash anti vaxx stand.

I’ve been so disappointed with her over the years. Now I just think she’s a delusional mess.

I keep reading about this, but I can’t get anyone to answer my question. Was she actually offered these roles. Or was she just asked to audition for these roles. There is a big difference. Plus after the studios or directors or writers talked with her did they want her for the parts?
