Halle Bailey in Dolce & Gabbana at the Oscars: pretty princess?

Halle Bailey is just 22 years old and she’s starring in The Little Mermaid, out at the end of May. I could have sworn it was coming next month at least, and it was sketchy to me that they got to premiere a whole ass trailer for it during The Oscars last night. Don’t get me wrong it looks amazing and I’ll see it in the theater, but a lot of people pointed out that ABC, the network that aired The Oscars, owns Disney.

Halle was in Dolce & Gabbana and while I have my issues with those two designers being terrible people, they created a perfect Oscars dress for her. I love everything about this look – the gown, her hair, makeup and jewelry. She just looks lovely and I know she’s going to bring it on the red carpet when her movie finally premieres.

Halle presented with her co-star, Melissa McCarthy. Melissa was in Christian Siriano and this is just not a good dress, it covers her from head to toe and looks like two different style gowns cobbled together. Christian had to recreate it at the last minute though – his studio flooded and Melissa’s original gown was destroyed.

Harvey Guillen wore Christian Siriano and he told Laverne Cox on the red carpet that he was playing with a masculine and feminine silhouette and that his hair was a nod to classic styles. He’s in Puss in Boots and it feels like I’ve seen him in everything lately. That’s a good thing – he elevates every role he’s in!

Jamie Lee Curtis was in a sequin nude Dolce & Gabbana full length gown. I feel like this would have worked better in a bolder color. Congrats to her, she was sweet during her speech and gave a shout out to her late parents, who were both Oscar nominated but never won. I was rooting for Angela Bassett as you know, but I can’t be mad at Jamie.

Marlee Matlin wore a kicky black Dolce & Gabbana with a feather skirt and tuxedo jacket. I really like this! She looked gorgeous.

Here’s The Little Mermaid trailer!

Halle was selling sea foam green and i definitely bought it. Very good PR for the little mermaid!

Halle looked gorgeous, I loved her dress. It was on theme but she was there to promote her movie, so being on theme was fine.

And yeah Disney owns ABC so the trailer made perfect sense in that context.

The color on Halle was beautiful and she’s so pretty. Maybe it’s because I’m an old millennial but the princess gowns just read as early aughts prom/wedding gowns to me and I have some kind of internal dislike for all of them.

I thought JLC looked amazing though. Same with Marlee, she’s having fun and looked great.

Marlee is a total smoke show in that dress. I loved it.

I didn’t like the neckline of Halle’s dress—that firm horizontal line. In some of the pictures, it combined with the lower horizontal cup line to do something weird to her boobs by dividing them into thirds.

She looked SO incredible!!!! You could tell that she really liked her look–she looks confident and like she’s having so much fun.
She’s 57 years old and all I can say is, GOALS.

OMG that trailer – this looks soooooo good. And Melissa as Ursula – am so glad we got to see a glimpse of her channeling her inner Divine (who was the inspiration for the original animated character’s appearance).

When they showed the Little Mermaid Trailer last night I told my husband that the Oscar’s just took a page out of the Game Show Awards playbook to show trailer’s. Sounds like their dipping their toes to see how people like it. I know it makes Game Awards a lot of money.
I will give Melissa a pass because of what happened to Christian. That is so sad about his studio. I thought she was going for Ursula, lol. Hailey was definitely the Little Mermaid. I thought it was a theme.
I didn’t really like Jaimie’s dress. She dressed for her age. She looked very pretty.
Marlee’s is just fun from the purse to the shoes.

They did it last year too. Chris Evans introduce pd a sneak peek at Lightyear. But his was done virtually.

  7. Keats says:

That color is just absolutely beautiful on Halle, the style of the bodice is not my fave but she looks so great that I don’t really mind it in this gown.

  8. Jen says:

I like the elements of Melissa’s dress, but combining the big skirt with the high neck blouse top was too much. I do enjoy the visual of the contrast colour tulle explosion of her on stage with Halle though! Halle look lovely and is a perfect choice for promoting The Little Mermaid.

    • Jen says:

I meant Halle’s dress was the perfect choice. of course, as the star, she’s perfect for promoting her movie 😆

    • JanetDR says:

And Melissa’s sleeves are so bad 😭. I could go for the skirt, but everything above the waist needs to go. Hey! Maybe that’s the fix – wear a bra like everyone else did. I am being sarcastic, but honestly what about a corset top in red or black with a wrap?
I do love the color of Halle’s dress but not the exposed boning. Harvey’s look is very cool and Marlee looks like she is having fun. I wish Jamie was in any kind of color.

  9. Coco says:

I agree that Halle looked amazing .

  10. Lucy2 says:

I like all of these, except for Melissa’s, that’s a shame the original dress got ruined.

  11. Meghan says:

I thought Halle Bailey looked BEAUTIFUL and for a brief 30 seconds she made me forget my absolute hatred of (exposed?) boning/sheer panels. I don’t know why I cannot stand that feature on dresses, but she is my #1.

I agree that Jamie Lee Curtis’ dress would have rocked in a different color, especially a jewel tone. Otherwise it was just blah. Did they know it would be a tan carpet or not?
