Did Tom Cruise skip the Oscars because of Jimmy Kimmel or Nicole Kidman?

Tom Cruise spent months promoting Top Gun: Maverick all around the world. It was seriously one of the most exhaustive promotional tours I’ve ever seen, but that’s what Tom Cruise does well – he’s a salesman and he goes out to personally ask people to see his movie. While Tom didn’t do the traditional American media blitz last year, he did come to LA during the awards season for something resembling a victory lap. He was the man of the hour at the Oscar luncheon last month, with everyone (including Michelle Yeoh and Steven Spielberg) rushing over to him. He held court at various LA events during his victory lap, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Judd Apatow was the MC at the Producers Guild Awards, and he ripped into Cruise (who wasn’t there) and Scientology. So… was that why Cruise avoided the Oscars, even though he was nominated as producer of Maverick? From Variety’s piece about what happened inside the Oscars telecast:

Jimmy Kimmel… had planned to spend a good chunk of his Oscars monologue riffing on how Tom Cruise had helped save the movies thanks to “Top Gun Maverick.” But when Cruise decided to bow out of this year’s event, most of those gags ended up on the cutting room floor.

“Jimmy loves Tom. Tom had just been on the show the week before,” McNearney said. “And they talked about seeing each other and Jimmy was excited to tell him that we got real Navy pilots to do the flyover at the top of the Oscars. Jimmy was really disappointed he didn’t come.”

Insiders had hinted that Cruise pulled out because he had caught wind that Judd Apatow — who had made a series of brutal jokes at Cruise’s expense at the DGA Awards — was helping with Kimmel’s monologue. But that wasn’t actually the case, and McNearney hopes that’s not the reason Cruise didn’t come.

“Jimmy tends to send his monologue to a group of people he trusts, comedy writers and comedians,” McNearney said. “They don’t help with the monologue. They just tell him like that joke’s working, that joke’s not working. No, Judd was not writing or doing anything for the monologue.”

Would that “L. Ron Hubba Hubba” joke have been used if Cruise were in the room? “No. We had about a three minute chunk of the monologue dedicated to Tom Cruise, honoring him and his role in reviving the movie industry. We were so disappointed when we learned a few days before the Oscars that he wouldn’t be there. Jimmy loves him and really wanted to celebrate him.”

[From Variety]

It sounds like Kimmel is desperate to convince everyone that he wasn’t the reason why Tom Cruise avoided the Oscars. The official reason cited by Cruise’s people was that Cruise is back at work (in Europe, I think?). Now, do I think Cruise had several reason for avoiding the Oscars, even given his “king of Hollywood” reception in LA one month ago? Yes. And one of those reasons was probably Cruise wanting to avoid being the butt of jokes from Kimmel.

Interestingly, the Daily Mail reported that Cruise decided to skip the Oscars because his ex-wife Nicole Kidman was scheduled as a presenter. Tom and Nicole divorced more than twenty years ago… are they still avoiding each other? They’ve been at the same Hollywood events and awards shows since the divorce, although – to be fair – they always studiously avoid each other. A source told the Mail: “Tom was not there because she was there, and he did not want a run-in.” But Cruise’s people slapped back, saying he didn’t skip the Oscars for personal reasons.

I also halfway believe that Cruise saw which way the wind was blowing and he knew that Maverick wasn’t winning Best Picture, so he was like “why bother?”

Will Smith wasn’t at the Oscars but that didn’t stop Kimmel from talking about him the whole night. I think Tom was only be the Oscars if he had an inkling that he was going to win.

  2. ThatsNotOkay says:

Tom wants an Oscar. He believes the hype that he saved movies. And you’re not gonna honor him with a trophy and blow smoke up his Xenu? No, he ain’t showin’ up.

  3. Laura says:

This man is extremely thin skinned. He wouldn’t/couldn’t take any joke about his cult or him without a win for his movie to back it up.

    • Eleonor says:

He has been around for 40 years, you can’t survive in the industry this long if you are thin skinned.
I agree with those who say he knew he wasn’t winning so he didn’t bother.
Now instead of talking about the Oscar he didn’t get, people are talking about “why he didn’t show up?”
As Don Draper said “if you don’t like the subject change the conversation” that’s what he has done.

      • Ameerah M says:

LOL. Thin-skinned rich white men in Hollywood are a tale as old as time. That entire industry runs on the thin-skinned egos of successful white males. This is a man ho wore lifts in his shoes while filming Interview With the Vampire because he was angry that Brad Pitt was taller than him.

      • whatWHAT? says:

“This is a man ho wore lifts in his shoes while filming Interview With the Vampire”

SPOILER: he wears them ALL. THE. TIME.

        yes, he is that thin-skinned.

re: him and Kidman…to him, she’s a “suppressive person” from whom he alienated their children. OF COURSE they avoid each other at events. (ETA I don’t think she is WHY he didn’t attend, just that yes, they still avoid each other after 20 years.)

  4. Nic919 says:

Since the news he wasn’t attending only happened the morning of the ceremony. It’s likely someone told him that Top Gun wasn’t going to win the top prize. He would have the connections to get that information.

  5. BayTampaBay says:

Do not believe The Daily Fail saying Cruise did not go because of Kidman. Cruise and Kidman have been successfully avoiding each other for years, so much so that they have become professionals.

    • Dee(2) says:

I can see him not wanting to sit there and smile through Scientology jokes, but he is dead-eyed enough for me to believe that he could do it. It seems super unlikely that he’s still avoiding Nicole Kidman after marriages and children for both and literal decades from their breakup. Oscar’s 2003 maybe, 2023?! No way.

      • Josephine says:

I agree, there’s no way they are avoiding each other. Whether we like it or not, they are both industry icons and my guess is that they can act professional if they run into each other. She’ll do her cool hello and he’ll do his weird over-smile.

  6. Chrissy says:

Top Gun Maverick was not going to win Best Picture. I agree with the sentiment above Why bother? Not worth the hassle and potential jokes and awkward moments. If TGM was a favorite to win he would have been there.

  7. Becks1 says:

he didn’t go because top Gun wasn’t going to win, full stop. If he thought Top Gun had a likely shot at the top prize, he would have been there 100%. Saving hollywood AND winning best picture?!?! Of course he would have been there.

  8. lucy2 says:

He doesn’t seem to do much interacting with people, without it carefully planned out and prepared ahead of time.

  9. Maida says:

I tend to agree with those saying he didn’t come because “Top Gun: Maverick” wasn’t going to win. But honestly, after everything that’s come out about Scientology, I have no patience with Cruise whatsoever.

    • Scurryalongnow says:

SAME. I get he’s viewed as a phenomenal actor, hard worker, blah blah blah. But I cannot for the life of me understand how much respect he still commands from other actors and the general public given the atrocities he helps sustain through CoS. We can collectively call out other predators, but somehow Cruise is immune because he’s friendly and a good actor? He doesn’t have to be “directly” involved in anything to still perpetuate all the incredible harms. Anytime Cruise is mentioned there should be a hyperlink to all the horrific things CoS has been involved in that KEEP GETTING IGNORED BECAUSE HE’S TOM CRUISE.

    • TeamMeg says:

If my church did terrible things, I would not stay in that church. But that’s me. Plenty of churches do terrible things and their adherents, parishioners, clerics, etc. all find reasons to stay and support those churches. They focus on the good aspects, they look the other way. Not saying it’s right, just that the phenomenon is not unique to Scientology. If Tom, personally, is guilty of heinous wrongdoing, that’s another story. But if not, I disagree that he should be held accountable for the actions of others, and I cringe at the jokes made in public at his expense. I am not a fan of Scientology, not in the least. But I accept that some people are, and we are supposed to have religious tolerance in this country.

      • C says:

He is one of the people at the top of the organization. Not your average worshiper or churchgoer.

      • Coco says:

        @ TeamMeg

“ If Tom, personally, is guilty of heinous wrongdoing”

I think you’re under the dissolution that Tom Cruise, is just a low-level member of the church and not the high-level member that he is and many former Scientologist members have called David Miscavige successor.

There are many stories about Tom you think Katie did all of that to escape because Tom was such a good man apart from the church, or Nicole barely survived him and the church. His slave labor, get kicked his 14-year-old niece out and disowned her from the family because she kissed a boy. I could go on.

        Here more on Tom “wrongdoing”

Control freak cultists is no show. Boo hoo.

  11. Jessica says:

Daily Mail still blaming a woman, his ex wife for why he didn’t show? Color me surprised.

He isn’t going to sit in an audience and not win and not get fawned over.

He prob also didn’t want every reporter on the red carpet asking, where Shelley??!

  12. Maddie says:

Tom has never been a big awards person and he knew that Top Gun wasn’t going to win. But I read somewhere yesterday that him and Nicole are never at the same awards ceremonies. I really do think this is why he didn’t come. I am sure the academy would have made a big deal about Top Gun if he had come

    • Ameerah M says:

Not true. When he was with Nicole he went to the Oscars literally every year. It’s only since he ha become more deeply entrenched in his cult that has changed.

      • Maddie says:

Yes you are right. I meant to say since they split he hasn’t gone to many awards ceremonies, and they are definitely not in the same room together. Whatever went down between them must have been really bad since she lost contact with her kids after that. I love him as an actor but just can’t with that cult he’s in

  13. AnneL says:

I don’t know how thin-skinned Cruise is. I know he has a massive ego but he has a sense of humor too, or at least he can do comedic acting (he did a very funny send-up of a smarmy Hollywood producer in “Tropic Thunder”).

But yeah, I guess it makes sense that he didn’t want to be the butt of jokes and didn’t want to be there when his movie lost.

He’s a good actor but I cannot with his religion. My husband’s great uncle or something helped South Africa kick out the Scientologists on the basis that they were not a religion but a cult. And that was the only thing that country got right until the early 90s.

  14. Britney says:

What I want to know is, where are Tom & Nicole’s adopted children Connor Cruise and Isabella ‘Bella’ Cruise? Were they sold off into Scientology? I know the tabloids say that Bella lives in london as an artist and Conner lives in Florida as a fisherman, but is it not weird to anyone else that neither Tom or Nicole are ever seen with these children? I mean and then there’s the whole mystery of if Tom ever sees Suri…

    • Micha says:

I think it would be weird if we did know — neither of them are in the public eye and live very private lives – other than a few photos when they were little we haven’t seen anything from them for years. I think Isabella is like 30 years old.

Suri is 16 — we will find out in a few years if she has a relationship with her father.

    • Josephine says:

Tom is seen with the older kids from time to time and I think they are both scientologists.

    • Fabiola says:

There are picsof the children with Tom. The daughter works as a hair stylist in England and the son as a dj. Both if them lead quiet lives. It’s refreshing that they are not trying to be famous nepo kids shoved down our throats.

  15. Amy says:

We already know that Kidman is Public Enemy #1 as far as Scientology is concerned. She was instrumental in advising Katie Holmes how to escape Cruise and his minions. CO$ haaaaaaaaaates Nicole Kidman with an absolute passion most normal people probably can’t grasp.

Cruise knows he can’t get away with a public stance of “Her or me, guys,” and – Spielberg’s gushing aside – no longer wields the kind of power he would need to ever accomplish that behind the scenes. And he definitely knows that alienating their kids from Kidman has never been a good look for him and his gross cult.

It’s the same reason Elizabeth Moss nopes out of the Emmys every time her CO$-sense tells her Leah Remini is nearby.

  16. February Pisces says:

This was toms first Oscar nom in over 20 years. Given that he only does rubbish action movies now, he probably won’t receive many more noms again. So I don’t believe for one second he slacked it off cos he knew he wasn’t going to win. Most nominees are happy to be there even when they know they won’t win. Also he was happy to attend the luncheon.

I think summat went down last minute and it has nothing to do with Nicole Kidman. Probably something Scientology related.

  17. matthew says:

If he thought he was going to win he would have shown up. it’s just that simple.
    no win = why bother
