Jamaica’s PM Holness announces ‘ambitious plans’ to become a republic

One year ago exactly, Prince William and Kate were winding down the Jamaican leg of their Caribbean Flop Tour. They staggered from one catastrophe to another during the Flop Tour, but the worst leg was absolutely Jamaica. They weren’t even in Jamaica for 24 hours before they greeted Black children behind a chain-link fence, then Kate winced when a Black woman touched her, then they made asses out of themselves at the Bob Marley museum. On March 23, 2022, they were called into the principal’s office, where they expected to get gold stars for keenness. Instead, Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness fired them live on camera – he told them to their stupid colonialist faces that Jamaica would be seeking to free herself of the British monarchy in the very near future. Exactly one day shy of the one-year anniversary of Holness firing Peg & Buttons on live television, he’s laid out his immediate plan to do just that:

Jamaica is “moving ahead” with its plans to get rid of “foreign monarch” King Charles as its head of state, pushing the country closer to become a republic. As the monarch looks ahead to his coronation in May, Jamaican prime minister Andrew Holness insists that “ambitious timelines” are in place to move towards the “road to republic”.

In a video shared by Holness, Marlene Malahoo Forte, Jamaica’s minister of legal and constitutional affairs, set out plans to “constitutional reform work” that would “craft a new modern constitution“.

She said: “The goal is not simply to swap a foreign monarch – the king of England – for a local president. We hope to use the opportunity to facilitate a reset of the nation.”

Holness added on Twitter: “The goal is to ultimately produce a new Constitution of Jamaica, establishing the Republic of Jamaica and affirming our self-determination and cultural heritage.”

In June last year – three months before the Queen died – the Jamaican government announced that they intended to pursue becoming a republic by 2025. The plan was bolstered in January this year when Holness maintained that it was a clear priority for his leadership to move with “speed” towards removing Charles as head of state.

Holness has revealed more about his plans, with a referendum believed to form the initial stages of the process. He is quoted by the Jamaica Observer as saying: “There may be the view that it is a straightforward and simple task of just changing the name of the country from that of a constitutional monarchy to a republic – that is not the case. There are many legal steps that we have to go through and there is the matter of a referendum, the outcome of which no one can predict.”

I remember when Barbados dumped the monarchy, there were several explainers about why it was pretty easy and straight-forward for Barbados to do it from a constitutional perspective, especially compared to other Caribbean countries. Meaning, I don’t think it’s as easy as Jamaica simply calling for a general referendum vote, there is a more involved process from the government and the people to dump the British monarchy. Holness clearly believes it’s worth it, and I agree. It needs to be done, and soon. Or else William will come back and make another clownish speech about slavery as Kate cosplays Scarlett O’Hara.

Good for them! Any Jamaicans on here who have thoughts on how the referendum will go?

Also, you cannot tell me this isn’t a bit of a (hilarious) dig at the Keens – a year short of one day exactly? (And tomorrow is a Saturday, so not a day they likely would be making government announcements anyway!) It’s like, let’s celebrate the anniversary of firing you useless lumps with a formal announcement of *how* we plan on doing that! Couldn’t have happened to better people.

That green dress is so darn ugly.

Suck it, Chuck! You’re the last King of Jaimaca!

what the heck was going on with her mouth in the photo with the green dress? good for Jamaica! may other commonwealth countries follow.

They’re both smirking which is an odd reaction to being fired.

I think the botox and fillers weren’t timed properly for this trip because her face looked so distorted. The lip fillers didn’t help because they were too much.

Good for them. I hope the referendum goes the right way and wish them every success as the Republic of Jamaica. I wish we could get rid of the monarch here in the UK with a referendum. I don’t think we will ever progress as a modern entity until we bite the bullet and get shot of the whole monarchy based system, House of Lords and all.

Some of those pictures are quite scary actually. The one where her mouth goes up at one side & down at the other 😬 I mean how is that physically possible? I also notice the Jamaican minister & wife holding hands in the group photo while WanK are in their usual ‘we can photoshop her out if needed’ pose.

Agreed. It’s time to bite the bullet for many countries. I do get nervous when people start talking about rewriting/replacing constitutions though. It’s necessary but it’s a very vulnerable time for a country because bad actors of the Cambridge Analytica type can try for changes that would be impossible at other times. I hope there is intense scrutiny over every step of the process and social media is monitored by multiple international groups.

A lot of the UK public is unaware of how much the RRFMafia/cult holds them back when they have never worked a day in their life Harry wanted to leave a long time before Meghan his granny gave him the CW/Empire 2.0 every engagement they received extra money except Meghan was not counted as part of them she even said they told her she is not an employee of the firm. The Mafia Service self always has.

Not saying that Jamaica wouldn’t be on its way out if H&M were there, but at least the crown would have had a credible and charismatic envoy to send. They really did themselves a disservice when they showed the Sussexs the door.
Every picture of Wills and Kate above is so full of cringe.

    • Becks1 says:

I think if H&M had gone on that tour instead of W&K, at the very least the PM would not have essentially fired them with the cameras rolling, you know? I don’t think it would have changed Jamaica’s intentions at all but i think it might not have been the embarrassment that it was.

      • L84Tea says:

Yeah, I remember at the time it seemed like the PM was particularly annoyed at W&K’s very obvious and brazen ploy to invite themselves down there and attempt to charm them with their jewels and whiteness. It seemed like the firing on live tv was the PM’s way of sticking it to them for trying it.

Congrats to the people of Jamaica!!
    Good Luck!!

We are counting on your success, no pressure!!

This sounds really promising, I need to know what she means by a reset of the nation?
