Helen Mirren wore Del Core & purple hair for Cannes Opening Night: stunning?

Here are some photos from last night’s Cannes Film Festival Opening Night. Remember, the opening night premiere was Madame du Barry, a film starring Johnny Depp. Also remember that many celebrities are contractually obligated to appear at Cannes, especially on opening night. So, Helen Mirren is obligated to go to Cannes as part of her L’Oreal contract, and she has fun dressing up and doing different things for the carpet. This year, she dyed her hair purple and wore a matching Del Core gown. She carried a fan which read #WorthIt. L’Oreal’s tagline is “because you’re worth it.” So… all L’Oreal spon-con, correct? Well, Tom & Lorenzo believe that Mirren was subtly signaling her support for Amber Heard, because Heard’s supporters encourage each other to wear purple for Amber and #WorthIt is one of the hashtags they use. I don’t know? I think it’s most likely just L’Oreal spon-con.

Brie Larson is on the Cannes jury, and she wore this terrible Chanel look. Usually, Cannes invites at least one “fashion girl” to be on the jury so that there will be one person serving couture at every premiere. Brie’s look is not a serve.

Elle Fanning in Alexander McQueen. Gorgeous. The prettiest princess.

Uma Thurman in Dior. I’m okay with this although the red coat (or whatever it is) makes me wish that her dress had been a bold color too. The dress is just a shade too flesh-toned.

Naomi Campbell in Celine. Perfect. Beautiful. She’s been doing this for three decades.

Fan Bingbing in Christopher Bu. Honestly, my favorite look of opening night? I’m glad Fan is allowed to leave China too (she had some tax/legal issues in China and was basically put in a prison for A-listers)

Catherine Zeta-Jones wore Elie Saab Couture to walk the carpet with her husband Michael Douglas and their daughter Carys. CZJ looks good? She also sort of looks Real Housewife-y to me.

Mirren looks great but that is really tacking sponcon if it’s not specifically in support of Amber Heard. The flesh toned dresses may look great in person but are 😴 in photos. I wish Uma had worn something more interesting. It’s Cannes! Go huge and crazy! I can’t even talk about that Chanel on Brie. Potentially worst of the year?

    • Josephine says:

Re: Uma I would add that chokers look good on zero many people. Take that cheap-looking thing off and her outfit improves but still doesn’t quite hit.

    • BayTampaBay says:

I think Helen looks phenomenal as usually.

  2. Josephine says:

Helen, Naomi and Fan look amazing. I don’t care for the rest.

And I feel like CZJ has been trying to make her daughter happen for awhile now – don’t we have enough nepo kids??

    • MissElizz says:

Maybe CZJ is trying to “make her happen” – but to be fair she’s also going to college full time (Brown Univ).

      • Josephine says:

Nice, good for her. I was remembering the mommy/daughter modeling gigs and they were . . . not good. It takes more than good looks to be a model.

  3. Cel2495 says:

Elle and Naomi look amazing. That’s a hideous dress from Chanel on Brie.. uy!

  4. Kaye says:

Beautiful dresses, but I don’t understand why so many fair blonde women wear those pale no-color gowns. Elle Fanning in particular always looks washed out to me.

    • Debbie says:

I suspect that it’s their own attempt at the “naked” dress. It’s supposed to evoke the image of them without any clothes on, but it just looks washed out to me.

  5. Lipsticktraces says:

Fan Bingbing in Christopher Bu is THE GOT. PS: I thought the Douglas’ were divorcing. Did I miss something?

  6. Kate says:

    She’s fabulous.

  7. sparrow says:

This is going to be contentious and it’s just my opinion, but I think Helen Mirren is one of the most overrated beauties of modern times.

    • Eurydice says:

I don’t remember Helen Mirren ever being considered a great beauty. She’s attractive, but known as a powerful and accomplished actor.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

As an old broad, I can relate to HM here. She is attractive but not trying to pretend she is thirtysomething. She’s not ashamed of some wrinkles. Very refreshing.

      • sparrow says:

Hi. I have a sense it’s a UK thing. (You may well be a UK’er, too.) I remember growing up with the background noise that she’s super good looking – could have been my family chatter! I admire her acting hugely, esp Prime Suspect.

      • BayTampaBay says:

She has a strong presence with a metric tonne of charisma that is not the same thing as classical beauty.

Also, Dame Helen is a first class clothes wearer.

    • Jaded says:

She has a banging figure, always has, and she thankfully hasn’t given into carving, injecting and botoxing her face into being unrecognizable. I think her beauty is her charisma, intelligence and her IDGAF attitude. And she’s a hell of an actress.

  8. Gizmo’sMa says:

Fan and Christopher Bu at Cannes is always Chef’s Kiss! Those emeralds have me drooling. I love her entire look. What a showstopper.
Naomi, Helen and Elle look nice. They’re dresses are acceptable but not wow.
    Brie’s dress is hideous.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

I thought this dress was very Sabrinaesque but not too obvious. Mainly the overskirt and the fact that it’s strapless. Classy. The Sabrina dress was, of course, Givenchy.

      • Gizmo’sMa says:

I can see why you would see a resemblance. It has to be the overskirt. And Fan’s dress is also a print. But I forget if Sabrina’s dress was a print or embroidered. Either way they are both beautiful dresses. Fan’s is my favorite because it’s more dramatic.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

If I remember correctly, the Sabrina dress was embroidered. Fan’s dress is more of an hommage than a copy I think. It’s not close enough to make you go, Sabrina wants her dress back. Anyway, I love both dresses.

  9. Eurydice says:

    That Chanel is tragic.

  10. Inka says:

Helen already said that “No secret message was intended. I am a L’Oréal ambassador, they are a sponsor of the festival, and quite truthfully, I picked up a fan because I was hot. ‘Because You’re Worth It’ is the official L’Oréal Paris slogan.”.

  11. BothSidesNow says:

Naomi never misses, she’s never come out looking bad. I do adore Helen, Elle and Fams looks as well, perfectly executed, except for HM”s fan, nope! The rest are simply flat and forgettable. It’s a shame that some actors that are contractually obligated to many designers are given the worst choices as well, perfect example is Brie. It happens every stinking year.

  12. K says:

Attention Chanel…please get it together ffs. My 8th grade sewing project was better than this crap. And I made a plaid duffle bag with the zipper sewn on the inside. And a handle that had to be safety pinned.

    • Southern Fried says:

Oh those school sewing project duffle bags, lol. More than a few girls brought theirs to Uni for the fond memories. 6th grade Consumer Science was a fun class, relaxed, casual chit chat with anyone, not just cliques. A chance to know other girls you’d not normally spend time with.

  13. Shells_Bells says:

I actually love the jacket that Brie is wearing…but I would pair it with some skinny black pants. It looks ridiculous over that dress.

  14. Jk says:

I think Helen Mirren is super cool and fabulous rather than a classic beauty. I believe she’s team Sussex and I don’t think she went to the coronation.

  15. HeyKay says:

I like all of these looks.

    Fan B. = winner.

CZJ and MD are going to bring their kids everywhere from now on? Why?

  16. one of the marys says:

Elle always evokes the nymph, ingénue, princess bride, fairytale for me. No one else captures it like this and I love to see it.
Helen and Uma’s dresses don’t complement their complexions.
Carys is being pushed out. Does she have any talent, training, social media, personality or projects to build on or are they waiting for opportunities to come her way?

    • Barrett says:

I agree about Carys. I think she and her brother went to prep schools and then just finished college or are ab to. She looks like a cute regular young woman. She doesn’t have that extra magic. She may favor Michael Douglas’s side. The brother appears to look like her. It would be great if they did work that gave back to society or even were more behind the scenes in show production. There’s a glut of nepo. Oversaturation.

  17. Torttu says:

No I don’t really like that blue hair.

  18. tamsin says:

Love Helen Mirren’s look and Fan Bingbing’s gown is literally a work of art. By comparison, everyone else looks rather dull to me.

  19. Sandra says:

Helen’s hair looks like she had a quick romp in the car before the red carpet! 🥰❤️❤️

  20. Meija says:

The Botox to make her brows arch is NOT a good look and she is such an icon.

  21. Ex-DouchesOfCambridge says:

Naomi looks amazing minus the plastic sunglasses. Fan’s dress is amazing but white background on such a beautiful print makes it look unfinished 😢

  22. HeyKay says:

HM, no to the blue hair. I like her own hair and she could have used a hat/headband/hair ornaments would have looked better. Yes to everything else.

Michael Douglas and CZJ, I enjoy Michael in almost every movie he has done. He survived cancer. He did a Netflix show The Kaminsky Method that was very good. Been a fan since Streets of SF.
CZJ still a beauty, enjoyed many of her projects.

But, their children are both very attractive, both now college grads.
Kirk Douglas was hugely wealthy. Michael is also. CZJ is a multi-millionaire in her own right.
I can see their kids enjoying a few big events, for fun.
But I certainly hope they go on to useful careers in the future.
That family has more wealth than they will ever need.
HW does not need more Nepo babies.
Frankly, their kids do not have the “It” factor w/o using their connections.
