Jessica Biel: I never do a film thinking it will win me an Oscar

fp_4013882_rev_planet51_111509

Jessica Biel has a new interview out in the British paper, The Independent (thanks to Lainey Gossip for the link). Now, Jessica Biel isn’t one of those actresses who comes across as interesting, or even sane, in interviews. Personally, I find her personality to be vapid, snotty and bratty, so that probably influences how I read her print interviews. That being said, Jessica does have a history of saying ridiculous, delusional and absurd things. Like the time she claimed her “beauty” was a problem for her career. Or the time after that where she reiterated that she wasn’t getting good acting roles because she’s so gorgeous, this time name-dropping Meryl Streep like she was worthy. Or the time when she pontificated about how she wasn’t “opposed” to being hired for the Twilight films. Or that she’s not “opposed” to doing Broadway. Because her voice is that good.

Anyway, most of Jessica’s new interview is about her voice work in Planet 51, an animated film. Of course the conversation veers into the direction of Justin Timberlake and the “rumors” of a split. That’s what she’s selling, y’all! And of course, Jessica even farts out this absurd line about her career: “”The truth is, you really don’t make these movies thinking, ‘Oh, this one’s it. This is going to get me my Academy Award.’ You don’t think about that.” Like she’s Cate Blanchett or something. Like Biel stole the role in I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry away from Blanchett, just because Biel felt strongly about the character, regardless of the Oscar aspirations of that film. Of course. The full Independent piece is here, but there are some of the good highlights – the writer notes Biel is in “the odd position of being a movie star with no real hits.” Otherwise known as “that girl with the ass” (my words).

Biel on aliens: “I definitely believe in the possibility of intelligent life on other planets. There’s just so much space out there to not believe in that. For me, the idea with this movie is to be open to change. You should be accepting of change because, only through change, can you grow and learn more about yourself, as a human or alien.”

On her most difficult experience as an actress: “Doing any kind of family entertainment comes as a huge relief from making something like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which was probably one of the hardest experiences for me, emotionally and creatively. It was intense because I was at this high level of freak-out, for about a month. It was just so not this world. That kind of emotional strain was so different. Planet 51 was just fun. I wanted to do it because it was speaking to my inner child. Yes, I want to be an alien. Yes, I want to be green!”

On the rumors Justin Timberlake dumped her: “It’s definitely been weird and sort of bizarre to deal with. But you have to have a sense of humor about the whole thing. Honestly, I look at a magazine and they know more than I do. You do really have to just get into a place where you feel Zen about it – take a deep breath and know that somebody is going to be taking your picture while you’re going to the laundry and picking up your dry cleaning. ”

Biel on how she practices her Oscar speech: “The truth is, you really don’t make these movies thinking, ‘Oh, this one’s it. This is going to get me my Academy Award.’ You don’t think about that. You think, ‘I love this story, I love this character. I can’t wait to play this character.’ And then it comes out and people start talking about it, and it’s exciting. Privately you give this speech and everything, but you really think, ‘Whatever. If I win, amazing.’ I mean, I can’t even believe if that would happen. That would be incredible. But is that the goal for my work? ‘I must win an award’? No. You do think about it, but you don’t dwell on it, because it just sort of feels so untouchable and so unrealistic. You just feel like there’s no way you’d win, so whatever, you just laugh about it and have a good time. But I think I’d be lying to say that you don’t fantasize about it. And I enjoy working. There’s always a constant fear of the unknown as in ‘When am I next going to work?’ That’s always there. I try not to think about that too much, but it’s always a little bit there. When will I work and can I pay my bills? Is it going to be creatively interesting? That’s always there for me, a little bit, as much as I might try to say it’s not.”

[From The Independent]

The last part was my favorite, I swear. From her pontificating on winning an Oscar, to her being somewhat honest about her fears of never working again, it’s some good stuff. Here’s the thing – if she was actually a quality actress, I would find her Oscar talk interesting, and I would applaud her honesty for basically saying “sure, I want one of those!” But considering Jessica Biel thinks her extreme beauty is all she really needs to succeed in Hollywood, and she’s not beating down the door of any drama school, I find her answers sad and delusional. She’s not going to win an Oscar. And talking (with faux humility) about her career in the scope of any awards is something that should be reserved for when you actually are nominated for something. Because right now it just seems like Jessica just introduced “Academy Award” into a conversation about her voice work in an animated film.

Oh, and Justin spent the holidays partying without her.

    Heh heh
Yeah I’ve never thought Oscar regarding Jessica Biel.
I’ve thought vapid, delusions of perfection, arrogant, Miseralba’s Conjoined Twin.
    Etc.

  2. Firestarter says:

Good thing she has that mind set, because it’s a safe bet she never will win an Oscar.

  3. Zarah says:

What has she done to her lips???? I have to say I have never thought she was GORGEOUS or anything more than reasonably attractive but she was prettier than this once upon a time!

She is clearly delusional about her place in the acting world. I kinda feel sorry for her. As for the ‘relationship’ with Justin, she’s got to be the only one in the world who thinks that is something worth clingng onto. JT himself doesn’t seem to think so.

  4. Kevin says:

Guess JT wasn’t partying with Rihanna since she publicly stated that she wants a man that’s packing.

  5. Ally says:

I saw the cover for the “Easy Virtue” DVD this week and it made me so mad I didn’t even rent the movie. They have a huge blow-up of Biel’s head, and small, barely distinguishable square photos of Kristin Scott Thomas and Colin Firth.

Way to misunderstand what’s appealing about your movie, studio morons!

The three bozos who’ll think this is soft pr0n with Biel is nothing compared to the hundreds of people per video store who would be thrilled to see a movie with Scott Thomas and Firth, except they probably won’t notice, cause you’re inexplicably hiding them in tiny cover art in favour of Biel’s trouty mug.

    The movie lover despairs.

  6. Sumodo says:

Doesn’t do a film thinking about winning an Oscar? Neither does Jennifer Aniston.

  7. Rosalee says:

Good, I was getting a tad concerned she may be disappointed or feel left out.

(eyeroll – long drawn out sigh) *boring Friday afternoon in the office, paperwork – paperwork*

  8. Jojo says:

What has she done other than “7th Heaven” and how is she considered a “movie star”??? When exactly was she the star of a movie?

  9. lin234 says:

I always found 7th heaven too cheesy. I only caught glimpses of the show and she always looked a bit too manly in the cheek/jawbone area for my taste. She also had too much plastic surgery and ruined whatever she had going on. Her nose is too small and so fake-looking and her lips are over-plumped. She just looks so fake now. I haven’t really watched her anything to have an opinion on her acting.

  10. Nicole says:

She needs a reality check, I think she’s taking the same loco pills Paula Abdul was!!

  11. Anna says:

Sumodo: Doesn’t do a film thinking about winning an Oscar? Neither does Jennifer Aniston.

    LOL exactly

  12. kruczynski-way says:

Her face scares me *Part II*
7th heaven was hilarious. I used to watch it sometimes just to laugh hysterically at their silly problems and solutions, and naivety, hoping that the producers and screenwriters did not mean to be serious when created it.

  13. Green Is Good says:

Have no worries Ms. Biel. A script of quality that will get an Oscar, Golden Globe or BAFTA will NEVER come across your agent’s desk.

  14. Spooge says:

Don’t worry Jessica, we don’t watch any of your movies thinking you’ll win an Oscar either.

  15. Sumodo says:

@ Anna There’s a whole list of actresses in that category. Thank God for Anna Paquin, who, in truth, never HAD TO THINK about the Oscar, it was hers from the get-go! Team Paquin!

  16. wow says:

Gah! Can anyone pinpoint exactly when she started to get like this? Because from what I recall she was likeable during her 7th Heaven thing. In fact I can only remember her getting negative press after she quit that show and I think posed for like a Maxim type-mag.

But where did this cockiness come from? I don’t ever recall her being this stuck on herself, so to speak.

  17. Oh My says:

I had a good laugh at “Not that the film-makers would have known this about me, but I so much related to my character of Neera because, when I was 16, I was also pushing it, on every angle, with my parents and the world. I thought I had it going on. I thought I knew everything so I related to her feeling of risk-taking.” Is she so unaware of the rest of the world that she thinks this character & she are different from pretty much every other 16-year old girl in the world?

    Jesus, what a friggen idiot

  18. Firestarter says:

@Wow- She was cocky back then, because if I remember correctly, she wanted out of her 7th Heaven contract to do “other projects” and the producers and brass said no. She then publicly announced that she would get herself get fired by posing in rather sexy photos, as 7th was a family show and she knew that it would not set well with the shows fan base.

I can’t remember the specifics, but she made some comment she had “outgrown” the show, and was a bigger star than the show.

  19. ien says:

i do believe that being a talented actor is a requirement for an oscar nomination or potential win.

this being said, jessica biel will not win an oscar. for anything, let alone a voiceover film in which the facial expressions of her animated character are probably more believable than her real life ones.

  20. SolitaryAngel says:

BWAHAHAHAHAHA. Bitch, please. The closest you’ll ever get to an award of ANY kind is if you’re presenting it to someone ELSE, someone interesting, talented, and worthy. SOOO not you, Miss “I’m too beautiful for my own good”.

Jesus at the gall of this woman(?).

  21. Jag says:

Wow, she’s ruined her upper lip, hasn’t she?

    Love everyone’s comments. 🙂

  22. original kate says:

i was trapped on a plane and forced to watch “easy virtue” and it was appalling. whoever told jessica she could do comedy was insane – she couldn’t even make noel coward funny. she may be the worst actress i’ve ever seen…worse than my all time worst, rosanna arquette. and that’s saying something.

  23. nikki says:

every actor/actress wants to win one Oscar even Pamela Anderson!LOL i remember she said that in an old interview from Playboy!

  24. Glove says:

Actors are a weird breed. Mass adoration can never make up for parental neglect, unfortunately.

  25. Now Not Know says:

It’s I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry not I Know Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.

  26. Essie says:

I kind of feel sorry for Jessica. I mean, the girl is totally delusional about her acting ability and everything she says in interviews is laughable!! Apparently she doesn’t realize that.

No Oscar-worthy script will ever come near her, ever!! She is destined to play the girl with the big tits and ass in silly movies AND she’s getting too old for that. In a year or two NO movie scripts will be sent to her and she will be begging for walk-on roles on television. Poor, silly little thing!!

  27. Firestarter says:

That Chuck and Larry movie was the WORST MOVIE!

It rivaled I Know Who Killed Me, as one of the worst movies I have ever seen! If I had actually gone to the theater and paid to see either of those, I would have been furious! I actually resented paying my satellite bill the month I watched them both!

  28. Lindsay says:

“For me, the idea with this movie is to be open to change. You should be accepting of change because, only through change, can you grow and learn more about yourself, as a human or alien.”

Do actresses think paraphrasing self-help books make them look deep? It doesn’t. But her next job could be an alien therapist and guide them on their journey of self exploration. She can go to the “so much space” and find them.

Also saying “What if I can’t pay my bills” Doesn’t make her down to earth. Just like Kate’s whining about her bills. Some people get buy with much less than she makes for a few months of work.

Based on the way she just dropped Oscar into the conversation I bet it isn’t just a fleeting thought. The semi-denial makes me think she has her speech planned and reenacts it with a shampoo bottle. And to think the only thing in her way is the curse of being beautiful…

  29. Shay says:

I don’t run to the mail box thinking I’m going to win a gold medal in the Olympics either.

  30. birdie says:

Her interview reads like nails scratching across a chalkboard. AND Those lips are almost as painful as the words that come out of them.

Jessica. Sit down. Shut up. Be thankful for the pathetically mediocre notoriety you have. Collect your residuals from 7th Heaven. Quit the plastic procedures and save the cash. Your career was over before it started.

  31. Sigh. says:

    So in other words —
“I have ABSOLUTELY NO INTENTION on making a REAL effort in perfecting my craft because I am soooo far behind on the whole true-acting-talent-thing that any award would be given post-humously.”

Let’s face it, you can’t teach a cat to bark…

EDIT: I think she puts that top lip in a water glass on her bedstand at night to keep it plump.

  32. fizXgirl314 says:

whether you’re human or ALIEN?!?! she had to throw that in there in case any aliens were listening? did she think she was going to offend her alien audience otherwise? what a dweeb…

  33. fizXgirl314 says:

lol, linday you put it much better than i did…

  34. asiont says:

never gonna happen, she is hopeless as an actress

  35. Jazz says:

I remember the whole posing for Maxim or whoever to get out of her 7th Heaven contract as well. Wasn’t she just 17 or something at the time? Even the crew members of the show said she was a “real bitch”.

  36. Jag says:

@fizXgirl314 ~ Perhaps she’s trying to cater to her Scientologist audience? They believe they’re aliens, don’t they? lol

  37. Courtney says:

she’s the Typical vapid ignorant young Celeb of this era Ms Biel doesn’t have the timing talent or Charisma to even warrent a crack at an oscar worthy film script let alone a nomination or a long line in hell of winning the little golden boy called oscar though she’s about to be the age my favorite actress was when she won her Academy award nearly 52 years ago

  38. JaNa'e says:

she’s gotta learn how to act first

  39. Nebraska says:

The only way JB would even come close to winning an oscar is if she did nudity – this would cover up for her being a crappy actress. I still cannot believe Edward Norton allowed her to be cast in the illusionist, which would have been a great movie with a little nudity and some chemistry, which Biel lacks; she is inert. No wonder she is with Justin Timberlake, my cat has more oscar worthy talent than those two combined.

  40. kimberly says:

huh? that’s interesting because when I see her name in a movie I know it’s a movie that I will never watch.

She really doesn’t have to worry about winning an oscar . . .she just says shit like that because she’s fully aware that all her movies are retarded scripts, but she needs a job so . . .

  41. Velvet_Julie says:

I think JT is pretty good at what he does. I think he’s the best of this generation in his musical genre, which is pop music. But, then, again, the competition is really weak. There aren’t many pop stars who are actually talented these days.

Now, there’s no damn way Biel will ever win an Oscar. She’s such a crappy actress and she gets the some of the worst projects in Hollywood. She should hire a better agent if she wants things to happen. She could also study a little bit. You can’t get any better at your craft if you don’t make any efforts. But I guess she’s too pretty (in her own opinion, because, I think she looks like Seabiscuit, the horse) to read a book.

  42. lin234 says:

    @ Nebraska

I think she recently did some movie with nudity that went straight to DVD. I was working out and blade 3 was on today. Jessica probably said 10 lines in the entire movie. I never paid attention to her in the movies. I saw the Illusionist but I guess I was more caught up with Edward Norton’s performance to pay much attention to her. lol. I thought I never saw her in a movie before but I guess I did.

To reiterate, I think what bothers me most is her nose. She shaved the tip and bridge down so thin that it doesn’t fit her face anymore. Between her top lip and her nose, her facial features look out of proportion. Not to mention her mouth area sticks out from the rest of her face so it really highlights her top lip.

I can understand why a lot of actors, actresses shave their nose down a bit. I think noses are one of the hardest facial features that photograph well unless your nose is extra petite. Normal sized noses at the wrong angle, or a slightly wider smile can look bigger in a picture than it does in real life. Since these people get photographed constantly, it would be easy to want to improve it slightly. But there is a pretty fine line between a subtle change and something so obvious. Just like it’s one thing to have confidence in your appearance and another to have an overinflated ego.

  43. fizXgirl314 says:

I thought her nose and lips always looked like that… does anybody have any before and after pics of her if we’re going to make any accusations? I vaguely recall always thinking her nose and lips were a little odd… It’s possible sometimes people are born with “interesting” features… we’re living in a time, I think, where we don’t realize not everything out of the ordinary is fake… rightfully so though because this plastic surgery epidemic is getting a tad out of hand… :/

  44. la chica says:

to #4: Rihanna did not say that. there is a song on her new CD called ‘Rude Boy’ that says that. but she herself did not say this in the interview. she was talking about the song (which is explicitly sexual).

  45. snowball says:

fizXgirl – I agree, Jessica’s always had that nose and those lips. I thought she looked weird on 7th too, with the wacky lips. Her looks never fit in with the rest of the “family.”

That’s just a really awful closeup picture of her. She looks like she’s not aging well.

An Oscar? Ha. Well maybe if she’s still with Justin, he might win one some day and she can play with it.

  46. diva says:

I have to wonder what Justin sees in her? She is totally clueless and conceited for no good reason. Considering she thinks she is “gorgeous” I don’t see her as the face of any ad campaigns as their model. Even Lily Allen is the face of Chanel, which is another travesty, but that is another story.

  47. NicoleAM says:

I think she’s very good-looking…I wasn’t aware that she had any plastic surgery…I think her lips look the same now as they did when she was on 7th heaven…speaking of that show: I too used to catch a episode once in awhile just to have a laugh. Like a modern day Leave it to Beaver! Can’t really comment too much on her acting ’cause I haven’t seen her movies except the Illusionist, which was very good. I don’t remember her being awful in that though (?).

  48. Ursula says:

This has got to be the most hilarious thread on this site. I am in stitches. Poor Jess, I hope she does not google herself.

  49. lway says:

@ SIGH – Brilliant comment. LOL! “You can’t teach a cat to bark” ha ha ha!

Yeah – she wasn’t thiking about an Oscar when she signed up for Powder Blue – what a waste of DVD 🙁

    She’s pretty but a lousy actress 🙁

  50. Boba Fett says:

Well im quite sure anyone can be made to look like an ignorant fool when things are ripped out of totally different contexts and used to make them look “cocky”. If sandra bullock can win an award of anykind im sure Biel could LOL. it would only require a well written story of like an adopted child with cancer and all missing limbs while being mentally challenged all at once… hot nurse+ Biel= Oscar
