Kevin Spacey was found not guilty on nine charges of assault in the UK

In the fall of 2017, so many predators and evil men were finally outed. Kevin Spacey was one of those predators. There were so many credible and disturbing accusations against Spacey, spanning back decades, all of them involving teenage boys or young men in their 20s, across LA, New York, London and wherever else Spacey worked for thirty years. Anthony Rapp told his story, but many of the accusers asked for their names to be withheld. During Me Too, some of Spacey’s victims even went to the police to file charges. Last year, a federal jury found Spacey not-liable of battery on Anthon Rapp, which was a huge bummer. So is this news: a British jury just found Spacey not guilty of nine charges involving multiple victims, all related to the period of time when Spacey was in charge of the Old Vic.

Kevin Spacey broke down in tears on Wednesday as a U.K. jury found him not guilty of nine charges of sexual assault, indecent assault and – the most serious charge – causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity.

This means that Spacey, on his 64th birthday, has been cleared of all charges against him in the U.K. It took the jury two days to come to their decision. The former “House of Cards” actor has spent the past four and a half weeks at Southwark Crown Court in London fighting his case.

During the course of the trial, the jury heard from the four men who had made the complaints against the actor (none of the men can be named for legal reasons). A jury dismissed each of the counts relating to the men’s accounts.

Originally, Spacey was charged with 12 counts, plus an addendum to one of the counts, but these were reduced to nine last week due to a “legal technicality.”

The acquittals are yet another victory for Spacey, who won a $40 million civil lawsuit brought by actor Anthony Rapp last October. Rapp had accused Spacey of sexual battery, which took place in 1986 but a New York jury dismissed the claim.

[From Variety]

Variety has additional details about all of the victims and their accusations against Spacey. It sounds like there were some technicalities in certain cases and “reasonable doubt” in others. It’s just a reminder that patriarchy hurts men too – many of these men didn’t come forward until Spacey had already been outed as a serial predator. The same arguments used against female victims of sexual crimes were used against Spacey’s victims – what were the men wearing, what did they say when he did this or that, did they say “no” clearly, why did they continue to communicate with Spacey after the alleged assault, had they been drinking, why can’t they remember the exact date and time of their assault. And it worked, because it usually works. Because the system was built to protect men like Kevin Spacey.

This is why the court of public opinion matters. Because predators like him (and many others) will never be found guilty in a court of law. Sexual assault/rape cases, particularly those where a very long period of time has passed, are incredibly difficult to convict. Add that most of these men can afford to hire the best legal representation. Now for the rest of time, he can say he was found innocent despite predating on innocent men for most of his adult life.

And now watch him be welcomed back into the Hollywood fold like nothing happened.

    • AlpineWitch says:

      That’s for sure.

I’m so disgusted!! His accusers were almost 50 but only 4 decided to go for a trial.
Men or women, sexual assault still isn’t taken seriously.

  3. Well what else is new of course he was not found guilty. We are living in really men can do no wrong world it seems .

  4. BlueNailsBetty says:

Welcome back to Hollywood, Kevin. /extremelyangrysarcasm

Kevin Spacey, we know what you did, we know the royal family members with whom you were acquainted when you did some of the things you did, we know three of your accusers have passed away.

    • Wendy says:

Wow 3 of his accusers have passed on? I didn’t know that. I used to LOVE KS but since these accusations, its hard for me to watch The Unusual Suspects anymore..UGH

      • Sugarhere says:

Spacey’s sexual assaults on other men has been largely documented. You should read what he Ari Behn claimed Kevin Spacey did to him at a public event. Behn was then married to Norway’s Princess Martha Louise from 2002 to 2017. He never recovered from the alleged assault.

Ari Behn ended up dying -allegedly by suicide?- the day after Kevin Spacey uploaded the weirdest video threatening “to kill them kindly”.

I won’t even get into how an unknown male physiotherapist, who had filed a complaint against KS for sexual misconduct, was declared dead the day before he was expected to appear in court to tell his story.

I won’t mention either how the woman who had been demanding Spacey be held accountable for assaulting a friend of hers, was run over by a car.

Last but not least, I will not mention that Ghislaine Maxwell and Kevin Spacey were photographed a lot together, one of the pics showing them sitting on Queen Elizabeth’s and Consort Philip’s thrones – with the blessing of their heir.

Facts, nothing but facts. All of this is out there, and I’m relieved it is never ever going away.

    This sucks.

  7. Mary Pester says:

Maybe now the rest of the world can see just how corrupt the British system is, you can do what you want to who you want, but as long as you have friends in high places your untouchable!! What about Wooton??

    • Carty says:

I think Elton John”s husband testified on his behalf too. So disappointing people in high places cap for these types.

      • LynnInTx says:

David Furnish testified that on one date and time in question Spacey was at one of their parties instead of where the victim/survivor said KS was. I believe there was also photographic proof of that provided by KS’ team. All that means is the date was misremembered. As far as I know, DF didn’t give any kind of character witness for him, but I’m willing to be corrected on that count if I’m wrong.

  8. Eurydice says:

To quote Sheridan Whiteside – “I may vomit.”

  9. Tree says:

The further away from the crime the more it becomes he said he said. Can’t really convict on that but you can warn the public. You can give the victims closure.

  10. QuiteContrary says:

    This is sickening.

  11. Lady D says:

Him escaping justice hurts my heart and makes me angry to my soul. I should just be used to it by now, but it seems everyday there is another hard core predator out there getting outed, and then getting away with it.
I keep thinking about something I read on here recently about how there isn’t a single woman on the planet who doesn’t know a woman who’s been raped or almost raped, yet not a single guy on the planet knows a rapist.

  12. LOLA says:

I have a male actor friend who worked with KS in Sydney. Kevin would squeeze his bum a lot, he told me.

    • AlpineWitch says:

The stories in the UK about his time at the Old Vic are in the hundreds… he’s a serial predator and will never be rehabilitated in my view.

  13. BQM says:

You left out the “best” part. Four or five of the jurors asked to meet him directly afterwards. He thanked them and gave a little bow. So the patriarchy AND the privilege of fame were both busy at work.

  14. DaisyMay says:

I used to really love the guy.

  15. beeks says:

I was sexually assaulted by a well known politician when I was 21 and he was 53. It was 100% premeditated on his part, and completely non-consensual. I didn’t talk about it for almost 30 years and finally did during the #metoo movement. So many supportive people urged me to go public or asked why I didn’t prosecute at the time (and I passed a lie detector test, kept my torn clothes for a time, etc). This story is why. Trauma victims who are vulnerable do not want to come forward because of this type of outcome. We have enough emotional fallout to deal with already.
