Frances Bean Cobain got married again, this time to Tony Hawk’s son Riley

Frances Bean Cobain is the only child of Courtney Love and the late Kurt Cobain. Frances keeps most of her life lowkey and out of the spotlight, although there’s been gossip about her here and there over the years, and she does occasionally give interviews. In 2014, when she was 22(ish), she married Isaiah Silva. They were done by 2016, and there was a kerfuffle about whether she had properly protected her assets, including the enormous family fortune. The thing with Silva was a classic starter marriage, and they both moved on quickly. I didn’t even know that Frances was seeing someone else before now. It turns out, she’s been seeing Tony Hawk’s son Riley Hawk for some time, and they quietly got married this month. Frances’s godfather officiated!

Kurt Cobain’s daughter and Tony Hawk’s son are now husband and wife, with a celeb musician acting as their wedding day officiant … TMZ has learned.

Frances Bean Cobain and Riley Hawk tied the knot earlier this month in Los Angeles after getting a marriage license in September down in San Diego County … according to docs obtained by TMZ.

The couple’s marriage certificate says they got hitched Oct. 7 and the celeb who performed the ceremony is none other than former R.E.M frontman Michael Stipe!!!

[From TMZ]

You guys don’t even know, I got kind of choked up thinking about Michael Stipe officiating the wedding, and thinking about how Kurt and Courtney chose Stipe to be Frances’s godfather. Stipe lives such a quiet life these days, but it’s amazing that he’s still close to his goddaughter and that he was there for her second wedding. Anyway, Riley Hawk is 30, Frances is 31 and maybe this is the real deal? Who knows.

Good gravy she is just gorgeous.

  2. Beenie says:

Dave Grohl and Chris Novoselic were on the latest episode of Conan O’brien needs a Friend talking about the 30th anniversary of In Utero and Nirvana in the early 90s.

In related news, I have started looking at retirement communities and learning how to play shuffleboard since I’m clearly “at an age”. 😭😭

    • Mireille says:

Dave Grohl and Chris Novoselic…I miss those days and that music. Still listen to it. And I don’t care how much I reveal my age or how old I get, I REFUSE to look at retirement communities or play shuffleboard!!! LOL!

      • Flamingo says:

As a GenXr all these AARP flyers in the mail is really pissing me off! I’m still young, I like young things!! GenX is cool dammit, now get off my lawn!!

      • Mireille says:

        @Flamingo LOLOLOLOLOL!!!

      • Mcmmom says:

Flamingo – I joined AARP this year as a giant “F-you” to anyone who thinks I’m old. I’m embracing middle age because middle age now means “bad ass.”

      • Juniper says:

Don’t knock AARP, the discounts are KILLER. Also, there’s no age requirement to join and it’s cheap. There are great airfare and hotel discounts.

  3. delphi says:

You know, I am here for this. The children of two 90s cultural icons get together? Absolutely, I am happy for them.

    • tealily says:

Yeah, I can see that they might have a lot in common! And his family has their own money, so that’s good too.

  4. Flamingo says:

I hope she found peace and balance in her life after that chaotic childhood. And to be safe, I hope she got a prenup this time. Hawsk money is nowhere near Cobain money. Silva sold the MTV Unplugged Guitar in an auction for six million. That is the guitar he was claiming was a ‘gift’ and the Judge sided with him.

    • SarahCS says:

In spooky coincidence territory, the boy who sold the world from that unplugged performance came on the radio two seconds after I clicked on this story.

      The guitar story really sucks.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

I didn’t realise he sold the guitar – what a bitter pill for her. He had user written all over him – he has a kid from a previous relationship and was using them to shake her for cash from what i can remember of their split.

      • schmootc says:

I’m surprised she didn’t just buy it back at the auction if she wanted to keep it. Does the fact that he got to keep it suck? Yes, yes it does. But money fixes a lot of problems.

    • tealily says:

Ugh the guitar think just kills me.

      • Flamingo says:

Well, on the upside, at least she didn’t have to pay him alimony and she got him out of her home quickly. I hope whoever bought it does the right thing one day and donate it to a museum. Or give it back to her. But I assume it’s in the hands of a tech billionaire or some Russian Oligarch.

I remember back in the day when Sean Lennon and Bijou Phillips were dating. Sean and Bijou were exchanging things from their Fathers. Yoko hit the roof and told him to stop it. The value of John Lennon far exceeds anything by John Phillips. But I understand how young love can be so hazy you can’t see through the fog. Until it’s too late.

  5. lucy2 says:

I hope this works out for her. She’s someone I always wish a peaceful, content life.

    • molly says:

      I wish for this too.

I think Courtney is a messy mess, but she really did something right with Francis Bean. The ingredients were all there (history of mental illness, addiction, parent loss, lots of money, fame, etc.) for a cycle-continuing disaster, and she appears to have turned out relatively well-adjusted and healthy. Good for everyone involved.

      • Flamingo says:

I think that is a testament to Kurt’s family who raised her and just having a good head on her shoulders (minus the first grifter husband). Limited to no ontact with her Mother seems to do wonders also.

      • Meg says:

I have a feeling Frances herself should get the credit for that.

      • Eleonor says:

        @Meg: agreed.
She could have pulled the nepo baby card, and God knows with those eyes and cheekbones if she didn’t have offers, but she chose to do her own thing, and living a quite life.

      • molly says:

@Flamingo- I didn’t realize she was raised by Kurt’s family, although it certainly makes a LOT of sense. Well, good for all parties involved for prioritizing Francis Bean in whatever way were(n’t) involved.

  6. VilleRose says:

I remember there was some drama about a guitar that belonged to Kurt and Isaiah Silva, the first husband, got to keep it in the divorce. I hope she does a better job of protecting her dad’s memorabilia this time around and hoping this one sticks for her. She’s been through a lot in her life growing up without a dad and a super unstable mom.

  7. girl_ninja says:

Gorgeous couple. I hope that they are happy and healthy all of their days.

    • Laura says:

I read a recent interview she gave where she seems to be pretty well grounded. Talks about how at times she feels like an imposter and carries guilt because she inherited this legacy, this enormous unearned fortune/ lifestyle courtesy of a father she doesn’t even remember.

  8. Twin Falls says:

Be still my Gen X heart. Love this.

  9. Grant says:

She’s a beauty! And so is he, oh my goodness. Exactly the kind of guy I would’ve thrown my goodies at and fallen head over heels in love with in my 20s (for better or for worse).

  10. Lala11_7 says:

    I will ALWAYS adore ❤️ France’s Mama & Daddy & Godfather…so I wish them Heaven ❣️

  11. Sunday says:

Wow, that photo is tripping me out because while I can sort of see Courtney Love’s face in Frances’, I also weirdly see Tiffani Amber Thiessen?

    • Flamingo says:

For sure she has Courtney’s eyes and an interesting mix of Kurt’s delicate features and Courtney’s strong bone structure. She got the best of both of them minus the addiction genetics it seems.

  12. fabulous says:

Ahh congratulations to them. Hope they are blissfully happy. X

  13. tealily says:

I think she looks like a combo of Scout Taylor-Compton and Alexandra Daddario. Like, if you told me they were all sisters, I’d believe it.

  14. MsIam says:

I’m freaking out that Tony Hawk has a 30 year old son. For some reason in my mind I always think of him as that skateboarding kid. I’m old now geez.

  15. Olivia says:

Happy for her (don’t know much about him). Has anyone addressed how much he looks like her father?

  16. Paloma says:

Google Frances Bean Cobain and plastic surgery. She is unrecognisable compared to her original face.

    • K.T says:

I did just look and she has had a lot of surgery, good for her that she got it all done so well! Yep, two kids of famous people who havre seen a lot of the scene…it makes sense! hoping it all works out as they have probably have a lot in common.

  17. Sass says:

    She is absolutely gorgeous. Wow!

Riley looks just like his dad. I wonder if he gets “you look like a young Tony Hawk” just like his dad does 🤣

  18. Mrs. Smith says:

I remember seeing Kurt and Courtney on the cover of Jane magazine announcing they were married. I was devastated!! But after growing up and seeing the doc Kurt & Courtney, it was plain as day he was hopelessly in love with her. It was incredibly sweet and showed a side I’d never seen. Anyway, Frances is 31 (ouch) and Riley seems nice (I hear his dad is a nice guy), so congrats to them!!! She deserves a loving supportive spouse. I also bet that guitar will end up back in Frances’s hands. Courtney is determined to make it so!!!

    • Jessica says:

Man she is a stunner and a perfect blend of Courtney and Kurt. I had no idea she lost that guitar to her ex, I just went down a rabbit hole and the guy sounds like a user and likely groomed her since he was older and she was a teen when they met, ugh. I’m sure she protected herself better this time, she’s worth A LOT more than 6 million, and I’m sure Riley is worth a good bit as well with the Hawk legacy, Tony made a ton of money. I’m an 80’s baby and was a teen in the 90’s so this marriage and Michael Stipe officiating makes my heart feel so warm, he took his role as godfather seriously ❤️

  19. Elle says:

She looks like a combo of Claire Danes and Evan Rachel Wood to me.

  20. Spike says:

Love love love Frances Bean. She is wonderful and deserves every happiness. Kurt was an incredible singer/songwriter. My favorite song is Everlong. Rick Astley did a great cover.

This is the guitar. It sold for 6 million three years ago. Michael Stipe officiating was the icing on the cake. It’s a sign of good mental health that she isn’t holding on to the guitar. She has so much from her dad.
