Duchess Meghan wore British designers for the Sussexes’ Nottingham events

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in Nottingham today well before noon. That alone is impressive to me, because post-Sussexit, the Windsors have steadily pushed back their work events later and later in the day. I’ve even suggested that the late-afternoon “starts” are because Prince William needs to sleep it off. So, Harry and Meghan started their day at The Community Recording Studio, and there were barricades outside of the studio. In another remarkable moment, the barricades were full of people straining to see two royals. The left-behinds haven’t seen full barricades in years!

Meghan chose a dark burgundy/plum ensemble and she wore British designers exclusively. Her coat, turtleneck and earrings are from Joseph, and the skirt is from The Fold London. Her shoes are Jennifer Chamandi. When the usual suspects have meltdowns about Meghan wearing British brands, remind them about Kate going out of her way to wear California designers.

What else? People Magazine said that about 100 people were waiting to see the Sussexes, and H&M spent about 15 minutes greeting people and collecting flowers. Meghan told one person, “It’s great to be back.” Someone showed Meghan a photo from her 2017 visit to Nottingham too, and someone shouted “I love you, Duchess Meghan.” I can hear the plates being smashed in Forest Lodge.

Also funny? All of the royal reporters are in Nottingham today, covering Harry and Meghan’s events. British news channels are doing breaking-news coverage. But… but… they’re not working royals!

Wow. It’s amazing to see someone save the institution whilst driving a stake through the heart of the people who claim to own it. It’s like if Bernie Sanders had been nominated by the Democrats in 2016 when they were still corporate. Institutions usually protect themselves like quasi-organic bodies, like a Golem set in motion by an instinct to self-preservation. But the paradox of royalty — as an institution — is that it ultimately rests with an individual to show why the whole thing matters.

    • Lorelei says:

They’re proving in real time that they truly believe and live by, “Service is Universal.”

      No tiaras needed.

    • Lady D says:

I cannot tell you how much I love your first sentence, Yankee Doodles. It feels like vindication.

      • YankeeDoodles says:

It feels like a vindication for basic decency. All the intrigue, the innuendo, the off-the-record briefings, the bitchy commentary, the snide scorekeeping…. It’s juvenile but it’s serious, you’d love to roll your eyes, but …someday their small children will be able to read this horrific stuff that an entire national press corps hurled at their parents. The rota went psycho, and the nation followed them. Stephen Colbert drew attention to this, specifically, when he called out not just the proprietors of the tabloids, but, “the people who read them.” …there is no way to defend Harry & Meghan without indicting the demographic that reads the Daily Fail. And that is a huge demographic. So, yes, this is vindication, for decency, but also, solidarity, for the rest of us, who are anonymous and not rallied by some tribal cult-like fixation. I’d rather be us than them. Like MAGA.

  2. Chiron says:

It was a lot more rhan 100.

This was amazing, meghan looked incredible and everyone adored her. Brought tears to my eyes. So heart-warming. Still teary a long way later.

    • NoBS Please says:

      Indeed, according to the BBC:

“Large crowds gathered for Harry and Meghan
Our journalists at the CRS estimate a couple of hundred people had gathered for the arrival of Harry and Meghan.”

So 100 people is just BS.

    • Magdalena says:

Exactly. The rota are desperately downplaying the evidence of the crowds and under-reporting the actual crowd sizes (even the BBC!) despite the evidence of the wideshots. These reporters are also using very closely cropped images, many of which don’t even show the barriers. 😀

I saw sour-faced Roya Nikkah in one shot very close behind them, lips pursed, scribbling furiously – after a previous view of her looking stony-faced at the crowds. I’ll we’ll see how she contorts herself to put a negative spin on a day of positivity. Why travel all that way to report on an irrelevant pair of private citizens if all you’re going to do is looked pissed? Sussex Squad Mute Challenge already in full swing! 😀

SO MUCH LOVE on display for Meghan and Harry. And I especially love the way people went out of their way to uplift Meghan, reassure her, welcome her, remind her that she is loved, tell her to ignore the press. They literally ensured that she felt SEEN, that they knew what she had been going through, and is still facing from the British media. At one point she looked so moved, as though holding back tears.

Such a diverse crowd as well: old and young, men, women and children of all races, creeds, colour and class. Lovely to see.

      Well done Nottingham!

      • Chiron says:

@Magdalena you said it all. Thank you. The lies about the crowd were despicable. The people who told Meghan how much she was loved and supported, then I started weeping again. It’s like a release.

      • QuiteContrary says:

Magdalena, you’re so right — people were reassuring Meghan that they loved her and she was so appreciative.

I can tell it meant a lot to Meghan that these people were determined to cut through the royal rota propaganda.

      • Lorelei says:

The obsession with crowd numbers is so Tr*mpian, JFC

  3. Becks1 says:

So irrelevant. So unimportant. So……not taxpayer funded, lololol. And so early!!I I was surprised to see these pictures when I woke up, haha.

They both look great and the crowd is clearly excited to see them. And I’m laughing because this really was the Firm’s nightmare back in 2020 – H&M planning their own events without any regard for what the other royals may or may not be doing, and getting more crowds and more press attention.

Kate in all burgundy in 3……2…..1….

    • Jais says:

Well technically, Kate and the rest already did their matchy burgundy years ago at that choir show, right after the Netflix series, to purposely say Megan was a liar for trying not to wear the same color as the others. Such juvenile and childish games. Anyways, yeah this is essentially their nightmare.

      • Andrea says:

Looks mahogany to me… that brown -red

      • Jais says:

Mahogany, brown, burgundy, def diff shades but in the same family so depending on the lighting in the photo, I get why people say a shade and then it’s gets disputed.

  4. Shiela Kerr says:

They both look happy to be there and the crowd looks happy to see them

  5. Louise177 says:

Completely fake. Everyone knows that the crowd is supposed to boo and throw rotten vegetables at Meghan.

    • Puffed says:

Yeah it must be AI. S/

    • Lorelei says:

@Louise, please do try and keep up. Jeremy Clarkson for one would like something much worse to be thrown at Meghan than vegetables. /s

      • Theresa says:

@Lorelei he also wanted her dragged through the streets naked while it was being thrown at her. However the people continue to prove them wrong by all the love and support they continue to throw at her

  6. MidnightSuperNova says:

Pure and simple, they’re rock stars and the racist and misogynist hate that. The Sussexes are in their element here and I love seeing them and I hope they stay safe and continue to thrive 🙌🏾

  7. BW says:

I want her coat and turtleneck.

    • BW says:

And I’m guessing who else wants it, too.

    • Chiron says:

She’s loving a cacoon at the moment!

She looks gorgeous as a deep autumn, she’s wearing her best colour. Love it.

    • 2131Jan says:

As a fellow petite person, I know how hard it is to find the right “oversized” look that won’t completely swamp me, but I have to say I love that coat. Meg has a couple of inches on me (she’s 5’6″, I’m 5’1″), so she can definitely carry it off. I too love tonal, textural dressing (it does make you look taller!). The *only* thing I’d’ve changed with M’s outfit is to wear a burgundy suede heeled boot with this outfit instead of pumps. Otherwise, no notes 😊 Just gorgeous, radiating happiness.

      • Lorelei says:

I don’t even particularly love this coat, but it doesn’t matter because there’s so much else to this day than what Meghan wore. And even if I personally don’t like something, I still always think that overall she looks stunning. And she’s just so much fun to watch! They both are. You either have “it” or you don’t. H&M do, W&K don’t.

And IMO, it’s like a sense of humor; it can’t be taught or learned, you’re either born with one or you’re not.

    • LRB says:

Joseph is such a fabulous brand – sadly outside my budget!

    • FrenchLadyJuliet says:

She looked FABULOUS. And she chose burgundy… I found it… interesting, if you know what I mean…

  8. StillDouchesOfCambridge says:

IM SO EXCITED FOR THEM!!! Full barricades and a warm welcomed! I hope the coverage is fair and positive

  9. Amy says:

I hope the folks that come out plan to intervene against any hecklers and drown them out. I was so nice to see this coverage so early

    • Lurker says:

No hecklers. Just love. And press. Not a single boo reported, and we all know the tabloids would have published it in an endless loop. People interviewed were excited and spoke about their love, admiration, and support for Meghan. Just lovely to see.

  10. Jan says:

This is where they had their first “engagement” as an engaged couple.
The barriers at the street cricket, without anyone behind them.

  11. Chiron says:

Back to crowd size, I picked out 40 pax in one tiny corner. I would have said 1000 easily looking at the barriers. Let’s not believe the media.

  12. Cassie says:

I am in tears seeing what is happening in Birmingham .
Meghan looked visibly emotional , the crowd was so happy to see them , just lovely .

    • Chiron says:

I cried when I saw them on insta. Its hard not to. It was so emotional. After all this. Incredible. Happy to shed tears of love and joy.

    • SunnyDays says:

Agree, Meghan looks emotional. Harry also looks OVERJOYED. Like, not just happy, he is beaming. You can tell this means a lot to them both.

  13. Brassy Rebel says:

The rival court has been launched. I just hope they stay safe.

  14. Totoro says:

Oh look! Real crowds with a diversity of creed, race and age in the mix! How refreshingly real! Unlike the audience of 100 year olds and 5 year olds who are bussed in to fill up space for Kant and Wont’s visits.

I’m not a fan of the shapeless brown outfit. I think Megan could easily shine more and look a million bucks more expensive and stylish. Perhaps she is being kind and keeping her shine down a tad to account for Kate’s nerves and to limit the smashed-plate bill for KP

    • Chiron says:

You’re right about the bussed in crews the wails get.

But this on my device is a gorgeous burgundy not brown. However that’s my device. Oversized coats, in this case a cocoon, is extremely fashionable. Underneath isnt oversized, that’s correct proportionally. She’s wearing 100% British designers and looks a million dollars. It doesn’t have to be everyone’s choice. But this look is incredible. Totally on trend and appropriate. I guarantee these pieces will sell out.

    • Shiela Kerr says:

Did not see enough of the outfit to determine its fit. Was not inside of the event to see it without her coat. But from what I can see, she looks incredible

      • Lurker says:

There are photos from their next event, where she didn’t wear the coat. I am sure Kaiser will feature the meeting with Hubb kitchen in a separate post.

        https://www.instagram.com/reel/Deg3wkAi-U6/

      • MelodyM says:

I just looked at the instagram video and what really stood out to me was that they could not keep their hands off Meghan (not in a bad way). Everyone wanted to touch her and hold her hand and hug her. 🙂

    • Shiela Kerr says:

@Totoro I assume you are writing about Meghan’s coat, because her outfit fits her incredibly well, saw her online walking into the event. Most coats are oversized for you to cuddle in.

    • FrenchLadyJuliet says:

I respectfully disagree. The coat is big but the style is great and most importantly, Meghan just looks CHIC and fabulous in it.

There have been occasions (only a few) where I was not totally sold on some outfit she wore, but not this time.

She SMASHED it. The whole thing.

What was the most fantastic though was to see her smile, and to see her moved by the affection and support.

  15. Jan says:

People magazine is like trump doing numbers for his inauguration, off by a lot.

  16. Nlopez says:

They both look fantastic, and there were way more than 100 people there! I love Meghans whole look!

  17. Slough says:

    Abolish the monarchy. Full stop.

  18. NoBS Please says:

The BBC’s live feed is full of spectators praising Meghan and Harry.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cmn4eq18we0dt

M&H were given bouquets of flowers and gifts including a crystal charm to ward off the evil eye… of who I wonder???

    All great to see!

    • Chiron says:

      Love that!

Plus I reckon easily 1000 pax. I started counting and got to 100 in small segments. If i had better images I would count every person. Lol it’s glorious.

      • Lorelei says:

I’m terrible with these things and even I could tell immediately that it was definitely more than 100 people.

    • tamsin says:

Thanks so much for this link. I enjoyed reading what the people came out to see Harry and Meghan had to say. It looks like the crowd gathering is growing. They are receiving a warm welcome. It’s clear that the people that have come out to see them like them, want to welcome them, and support them.

    • Puffed says:

It’s so funny that this disclaimer was on the home page: “As a reminder, Harry and Meghan are not working royals. Rather, they are in Nottingham as public figures and supporters of individual projects, our royal correspondent writes.” They are making people hopeful and happy, which is the Ideal of the Monarchy. But the real royals only serve up sex and financial scandals as interesting topics, and boredom for everything else.

      • Jais says:

It’s so funny. As a reminder, they are not working royals, meaning they are not paid tax-payer money to live their lives. Okay, thx for the reminder.

      • Lorelei says:

Their abject stupidity is making me cackle. They’re just giving the “Abolish the Monarchy” people ammunition with that statement next to these photos.

      • BeanieBean says:

Then why did they have their ‘royal correspondents’ there? I mean, if it’s not a royal event & Harry & Meghan aren’t royals….

  19. Amy Bee says:

The photos have been great so far. The Palace and press tried their best to poison the well against Harry and Meghan but it seems that hasn’t worked. I’m happy for Harry and Meghan. The only designer that’s new to Meghan is The Fold. She was the first royal to wear Marks and Spencer and Jennifer Chamandi and she’s worn Joseph before she met Harry and during her time as a working royal.

  20. Meg says:

They look great and stayed safe. What do they do with all the flowers?

  21. Tessa says:

    So happy for them

  22. Livvy says:

That’s a very conservative, royal walkabout outfit on Meghan. You could almost see Kate wearing that. Is that a message or is she just buttoning down from her overly wide and long trousers for the Malala meeting (let’s keep it real, it wasn’t her best look). Harry’s doing his typical transatlantic casual, but he has a much happier vibe. I knew he’d miss home. Not the non-Spencer family and not the press, but definitely the feeling of being where your spirit belongs. I really like the looks they’re exchanging. It definitely helps when your partner is happier.

    • Jais says:

The looks they’re exchanging seem to be about the same as any I’ve ever seen them exchange in public, whether it was an Invictus event in Canada or going to a charity dinner. And the cocoon coat seems pretty on par for Meghan’s style as well as the monochrome colors .

    • Nicole says:

She’s been dressing like this for years. I do feel like the skirt length is longer, but I mean, fall is here and they’re not in sunny california anymore haha. I don’t think it’s that deep.

And I loved her look at the Malala meeting, oversized is in, y’all! :'(

    • Pumpkin says:

Really? To me this is such a classic Meghan outfit: matching neutrals, oversized coat and accessories.

In my opinion, the typical royal style would be coat dresses that Kate wore for years (albeit she’s updated her wardrobe considerably. Wonder why.).

But as they say: to each their own.

    • Chiron says:

I’ve followed Meghan since early suits days, this is how she dresses. Btw kkkate never did, I’m sure you’re aware or perhaps not, Kate has never dressed like this..she’s only ever tried to copy but she’s hopeless at even copying. Facts matter.

      • Jais says:

Kate has been dressing like Megan for so many years now that somehow this is being referenced as an example of conservative royal dressing. Pre-Meghan, it was coat dresses, def not oversized cocoon coats. This would not have been considered a conservative uk royal look pre-Meghan.

    • Livvy says:

This outfit is very royal protocol. She hasn’t really gone this conservative for her events since actually being a working royal. If her Malala trousers had been less voluminous, that outfit hits the right tone of edgy casual elegance that would be better for nonroyal visits. And I also stand by my observation that Harry has looked thrilled since it was made public that they’d return. Home is anywhere his family is, but I think Britain as a place is in his blood and bones and it feels good for him to be back and to share with his children what he loves about it

      • Jais says:

Sorry yes, no I agree. Apologies. It’s both in Meghan’s wheelhouse and yes it fits royal protocol as it is now. It was just funny to me though that the style is royal protocol precisely bc it feels v meghan. Her mark was made so far back. And I also agree that Harry looks happy bc he prob is happy to be spending extended time in the uk again. My point was that I’ve mostly always felt that they’ve had those kind of looks together in public, whether it was in the uk or not, but yes agree they’re good to see no matter where they happen.

      • Livvy says:

Thanks Jais. But please no apologies and no worries about piling on. I get this site and how protective it is of Meghan for good reason. I’m here because I like reading and making positive Meghan comments, but I’ve noticed that comments that are not 110% positive about her get pushback. I understand why, but let’s not make Meghan as ridiculously untouchable as they made Kate. That’s a disservice. This is just a fashion opinion/commentary. We’ll like some things and not others. Peace to all!

    • Amy Bee says:

@Livvy: Are you new here? Kate’s style is actually taken from Meghan not the other way around.

    • Little Red says:

At the risk of piling on, Kate only started dressing like this after Meghan showed up. Before that, she wore those very old-fashioned coatdresses. Kate copied Meghan, not the other way around.

    • Becks1 says:

@Livvy, I get what you mean about this looking like something kate would wear. She would never wear anything as chic, and she would mess up the colors and everything, lol, but a longer skirt and a turtleneck is absolutely something Kate would wear on a royal event and that she has worn multiple times, even before Meghan came on the scene. She didn’t wear coatdresses all the time people. She used to only wear them actually for more formal events or church events, and she would wear dresses or even separates to other events (or jeggings), and then at some point before M came on the scene it became all coatdresses all the time. But that wasn’t her norm when she started out.

      • Livvy says:

Thanks for understanding, Becks1. Yes, I think Meghan is doing autumn burgundy chic too, and it’s so very working royal that it’s Kate adjacent. Others thought that I meant she was copying Kate, but no. You’re right that Kate would do this look with her own frumpy flourish. Meghan’s conservative is not at all frumpy. Fashion aside, I really liked the strong couple energy between Harry and Meghan in all these pictures.

  23. ecsmom says:

Meghan looks great and l love the color. But I have to admit when I saw her in that color the only thing I could think of is when all the royal wenches wore burgundy/maroon to Kate’s Christmas concert to “prove” they can all wear the same colors. I know Meghan is not telegraphing anything that petty and it’s definitely in her color wheelhouse but it was the first thing I thought of and it made me smile even more.

    • Jais says:

I remembered that upthread as well. Maybe they’ll all bring their burgundy looks out again in solidarity, lmao.

      • ecsmom says:

I’m so glad I’m not the only one. That was so long ago yet I can’t forget their middle school mean girl antics. They looked so foolish and Meghan looks great wearing the deep colors of autumn.

      • Jais says:

She does! And yeah she actually has a number of moments when she’s been seen in burgundy, pre-Harry, when she was a working royal, and even on asever iirc.

    • Tiny says:

      Color, like service, is Universal.

  24. Miranda says:

This makes me so happy! While I don’t subscribe to the belief that the Sussexes’ return to the UK was a unilateral decision by Harry, it would be completely understandable if Meghan, even if she was totally onboard with the move, still had some apprehension about how she would be received by the public after a decade of the gutter press poisoning the well. This must have been so heartwarming and reassuring for her.

I really love the colors in this outfit, and the top and skirt are great, but I don’t care for the coat. It kinda swallows her up and makes her look bulky (which, as a fellow petite girl, I totally know that struggle when it comes to outerwear!).

  25. LauraD says:

I am so pleased for Meghan. She can see for herself that there are a LOT of people over here who adore her and are pleased for her to be back. From those photos there are quite a few bouquets and none of them look like a last minute purchase from a late night garage type of bouquet. People wanted to see her and let her know they’re not listening to the noise.

    WTG MEGHAN! W00t W00t!

  26. s808 says:

Love the all burgundy look, I too am in my burgundy era for fall! Glad to see Meghan and Harry so well received. It’s a nice reminder that what’s going on on the internet doesn’t match reality most of the time.

    • Nicole says:

Exactly. The cyber world isn’t real life. This is a perfect example of that and I love it.

Love the “non royals” being covered by all the royal reporters lmaooooo I’m cackling!

  27. Chaine says:

Great colors on her! She looks so relaxed and happy.

  28. Over it says:

The petty in me think it would be hilarious if Harry and Meghan moved back to salty isle just to ruin Willy and kitty days and make them have to work more than they ever have in their entire lives. It’s a petty fantasy I plan to hold on to . Yes I know Harry and Meghan are above that and they don’t do things because of how it will affect Willy and kitty but please allow me to stay dreaming in petty land . I would sleep better 😂😂😂

  29. Graphinya Heather says:

Today is my WFH day so I am currently wearing a nice oversized gray Buffalo Bills sweatshirt (Go Bills!) and cranberry leggings with fuzzy black socks, in case the media would like to know. Before they price Meghan out, for clothes she bought with her own money, I thought they’d like to know what I am wearing, also bought with my own money.

And just like my outfit (just fancier and more go outside in public lol) hers looks comfy and fall appropriate, especially the coat! The rats can’t hide the proof, she and Harry look happy to be there, and the people around them look happy to be there with them. If only we all could be such failures at life!

  30. Puffed says:

That’s the way it should be done. In your eye, BRF. Those kids looked so pumped! Compare to the photo of WanK manhandling a terrified, demented old lady who couldn’t walk in Rothesay, the contrast could not be more hilarious or stark.

  31. Monika says:

Great to see Meghan out and about and so warmly wlcomed in Nottingham.

  32. QuiteContrary says:

Sky News: “The barrier is straining with the enthusiasm, the energy.”

The Waleses could never generate this kind of excitement.

    And Meghan’s look is perfection.

  33. Sharon says:

This is so heartwarming!! I loved reading comments from real people waiting to see them (BBC link). It gives me faith in humanity. We need to turn away from the tabloids & their lies. I want to focus on positivity, like Meghan does.

  34. Meija says:

Megan hugging an older woman with genuine warmth and no hesitation at all. Priceless. They love her.

  35. Marceldeux says:

Absolutely spectacular to see- eat your heart out, left behinds.

  36. Little Red says:

Thank you for the BBC link, NoBS Please. It was good to see local, on the ground coverage of their visit.

  37. M says:

so looking through the news coverage of this and the news tiktoks (ITV, Sky, CNN) …it seems like the comments are by and large extremely positive, which is so different than any of their news about harry and meghan which normally has majority hate comments, even just a few days ago. The only difference? Ukraine destroyed the bot data centers in Russia. I knew that bots were being used against them, but it appears that nearly all of the hate commenters were russian bots?

seeing so many people so happy and excited to see them, and so many people specifically wanting to show support and love to meghan made me so happy. I also learned about 3 charities that I’d never known about but think are doing amazing work, and it’s clear that the support that meghan and harry gave them has been vital to their survival. I’ve been confused and worried for them moving back to the UK without security, but I’m beginning to understand why harry and meghan might have felt compelled to return.

I really hope that they get their security soon, and the royal family should too. God help the royal family if anything happens to meghan or harry or their children, the public obviously loves them still and would (rightly) blame the royal family if anything happened to them. their whole “working royal” versus “royal” argument is specious and everyone knows it.

  38. JFerber says:

Meghan always understands the assignment. Wear British designers while in Great Britain. What could be simpler? I’m so happy for them that public appearances are going well. However, Harry’s Moriarty, his own brother, has got to be livid and crazed by this. I hope to G-d the Sussexes have royal protection against Harry’s whole family, since they are the leaders of the lunacy.

  39. Kirsten says:

The outfit is OK, but because of the proportions and that it’s all one color, it seems to be swallowing her a little bit. A different color turtleneck or even shoe might have helped a bit.

    • JFerber says:

Plums, I’ll just parry back that as private citizens, they can do whatever they want. And of course Harry will always be a prince of the realm and Meghan will always be a duchess and princess. It’s not their fault no one crowded around Will while he was playing cricket to end homelessness. Also, I’ll mention that when I was eight years old, my mom took us to see Adam West making an appearance as Batman. I’ll always remember my mother yelling “Batman!” and Adam West turning around to say hello to her. She always remembered it, too. I’m not sure what point I’m trying to make, but the people love Harry and Meghan and they have every right to walk down the street. I’d have been there, but I’ve eliminated England as a travel destination. And whatever killer Charles says, Harry and Meghan (and their kids) will always be royals.

  40. JFerber says:

Kirsten, she looks absolutely fabulous. All I can think of is that she felt insecure appearing in public in a place hostile to her on principle and felt more comfortable swathed in comfy, enveloping clothes in a single color. I can only admire her courage and resilience in going out there at all. I would have been petrified. The true queen in every way.💐

    • samipup says:

I agree about cocooning in warm and soft clothes for feeling safe and secure. She looked so overwhelmed with joy at the crowd’s reception to her. I imagine wondering if the people on the street were like the newspapers.

The coat and matching turtleneck, labelled Mahogany, are the yummiest and richest colour! I believe brown is one of the big colours for fall. Interesting pairing with burgundy shirt. Seems like oversized overcoats are what Meghan is favouring this fall. Certainly they give a cozy feeling, like wrapping oneself in a blanket. People have mentioned that it’s rather warm in Nottingham today, so Meghan may gave been roasting in a wool coat. But it’s fall- the mornings can be very chilly. Canadian here and I live in one of the cold provinces. I started early this morning with a down puffer, and by this afternoon, I can go out with just a long-sleeved top. There can be fairly wide temperature fluctuations in 12 hours on a fall day!

  42. Just a Guy says:

Just watched some great videos of irrelevant, unimportant, private citizen “ROCK STARS”. Then why are the rota rats in Nottingham rather than covering KC? He has some type of engagement today.

  43. L4Frimaire says:

She looks great. I liked the fitted skirt. I love these colors and she looks good in these deep tones. What a wonderful day. Everyone seemed excited and happy. Harry was beaming. I’m so glad she reconnected with her friends from the Hubb kitchen and got to meet all the people behind the charities they support. .

  44. Plums says:

I’ll be the cheese that stands alone I guess and say that I don’t think they should be doing walkabout stuff like this. It’s not something other philanthropists do; it’s what royals do. and they’re supposedly Out of the institution that stuctures public engagements like this. They can do engagements with charities and their various business and nonprofit interests without working a public crowd line and accepting bouquets and whatnot. When the royal family and politicians do walkabouts, it’s because they’re trying to sell an image of themselves to the public. What are Harry and Meghan trying to sell by doing this? They’re not the faces of an organization or an ideology that needs to drum up support and PR, they’re just wealthy people with charitable interests. Who is this for?

    • Snuffles says:

They did it because locals showed up in droves and were excited to see them.

    • Little Red says:

I don’t know if the walkabout portion was planned or more spontaneous given people turning out in droves to see them. But this was the first public event they did together so interest was high. Perhaps, as time goes on, the crowds of people will calm down a bit.

    • Becks1 says:

While I see what you’re saying, I think part of the issue is that people expect this from them. When these visits were announced, people made plans to go try to see them. It’s not what other philanthropists may do, but it is what people do for celebrities – they line up outside of a hotel if they know Taylor Swift has a meeting there or something like that, or wait outside the Today studios to try to see a celebrity coming or going. H&M are occupying a unique space and I think its going to be something everyone will sort of figure out as it goes on.

      • Eurydice says:

Yes, the thing is that Harry is a unique creature – a royal, the son of Diana, a philanthropist, soldier, celebrity, private citizen. There is literally nobody else in the world like him and there’s no getting away from that. We can’t say, “this is what royals do, this is what Diana would do, this is what celebrities do, what private citizens do,” because he’s a combo of all of these – there’s only “this is what Harry does.”

    • BeanieBean says:

Um, well, I’ll counter with what I remember seeing in the news oh so many years ago. Audrey Hepburn spent many years working for the UN, specifically to help children. She did walkabouts, accepted flowers, hugged kids, etc. It is something philanthropists do.

      • Day Drinker says:

Yes Beanie. It’s also what Diana did, Harry – and now with Meghan – is doing what his mother did. I’m a bit cynical, but most philanthropists don’t attract crowds because they don’t want to. At least the few I’ve heard of. Sure, they’ll write a big check, announce it after the fact, and also get a big tax write-off. H & M announced these appearances in advance to highlight the charities involved. They didn’t tell all these people to come out, bring flowers and just be thrilled to see them. They are a very charismatic couple who truly enjoy mingling with everyone and it shows.

    • Bum says:

@Plums it’s for pushing back on a disgusting 10 year hate campaign waged in the press and supported by British institutions with tentacles across Australia and the US and beyond. It is their right to defend themselves using every tool available to them to counter those narratives by speaking to and spending time with those who support them. They aren’t campaigning they’re being celebrated and showing their appreciation.

    • tamsin says:

They are there to support and see the progress of two organizations that Meghan and Harry have personally donated money for the development of programs. The director of the CRS said they basically wouldn’t be there without Harry’s support over many years. Meghan directed cookbook money to the food organization. They are there to celebrate and support three organizations and those that work in them and those that are helped by them. These days, if you ask me, the royal family do events to raise their own profile. Meghan and Harry don’t need to raise their profiles. Their work speaks for them. They are there to literally support others, and by doing so, they also gave people a chance to show gratitude and respect for them.

  45. therese says:

I teared up. Cream rises to the top.

  46. JJ says:

They looked great but 100 people? Umm… check the pics. Way more than 100 people were there. Clearly, People is still trying to downplay the Sussexes’ popularity.

  47. Athena says:

I love seeing them out and about and looking healthy and happy.

I do have to ask though (and I know I am going to get yelled at) how is this different from a royal engagement (other than the lack of the “official” royal patina)? This further demonstrates that Harry, all this time, was hell-bent on making the half-in-half out thing work.

It’s great that they are doing charity, and they are well suited for that. But these walkabouts, accepting handkissing from the public, receiving flowers…is NOT how charity works. And it was one thing when they were doing these meet-and-greets around the world; but returning to the UK after leaving specifically BECAUSE the royal family would not guarantee their safety completely undercuts their complaints and concerns.

I strongly believe this is all Harry-driven, btw. He doesn’t know any way of living other than automatic adulation and applause for merely existing. In the U.S. he actually had to demonstrate his value, and his ideas were often shot down. That’s not something he’s ever experienced, and I imagine it made him realize that being a royal wasn’t so bad after all.

    • Jais says:

It’s a fair question. For me, it’s about are these two people who are living their entire lives off inherited duchy land ownership and tax-payers or not? But even with that, you will have people who wish they were part of the monarchy again. And I’m not one who does feel that way. But I will push back that this type of event doesn’t have some impact on the topics and charities and hell even the brands Megan is wearing. The Sussexes have a unique profile, due to the fact they are royals and royal adjacent. I’d be happy to see all monarchies abolished but that’s not the current reality and I don’t take a huge issue with Harry and Meghan taking advantage, Royal-looking events and all, of that system to raise profiles for different causes. Does it look like a royal engagement? Sure. And? Finally, I do disagree that it’s all Harry-driven bc that takes agency away from Meghan. People can dislike that they returned to the uk, no problem there, even if I disagree in being that upset over it, but then the onus of that should be on both Harry and Meghan.

    • Becks1 says:

I think the first half of your comment has some merit, but where you lose me is the second half. They did NOT leave the UK “specifically because the royal family would not guarantee their safety.” They actually had security when they left. And they always intended to keep a home in England until Charles terminated their lease.

I also don’t know why so many on here are insisting that Harry somehow failed in the US and needs the applause and crowd support to survive. He’s talked more than once about how he has needed extensive therapy to get through these kinds of engagements. It’s clear he’s come out on the other side which is great for him. This is a man who introduces himself as Harry, who insisted from the time Archie was a newborn that he was not going to be raised in the public eye, and who specifically walked away from a royal life, even offering to give back his title of Duke, in order to protect his wife and children (well then just child.) Even though some ideas were shot down – others were not. he produced two series for Netflix, a series for Apple, he’s a CIO for a large company, etc.

I know people here are divided on why Harry wanted to come back but I don’t think it has anything to do with Americans not bowing and scraping to him enough (also, lets not act like America is this utopia of meritocracy, especially for rich white men.)

    • Puffed says:

“He doesn’t know any way of living other than automatic adulation and applause for merely existing.” That’s a load of bullocks. He sure didn’t get adulation whilst serving a decade in the military. He got dirt and danger.

    • Magdalena says:

Oh please. As others have said above, people queue up to meet celebrities all the time, even the ones who are out doing charity work. They have also pointed out that celebrities with nary a connection to royalty have been given flowers and done walkabouts while doing charity work, e.g Ingrid Bergman.

Meghan had a lovely interaction with the lady who subsequently kissed her hand. Should she have slapped the lady? Snatched her hand away? That would have been incredibly rude and ungracious. Should she have flung the flowers back at the wellwishers? Every single person who gave her flowers also passed on a personal message of welcome, support and encouragement to her.

Consider what Meghan has been through since before and after she left the UK, largely at the hands of the UK media. She has been treated horribly by huge swathes of the media whose reporters have repeatedly told the world that “The British do not like her” and that “she is not welcome”. So these proud Brits in Nottingham decided, independently of each other, organically, as it were, to demonstrate to Meghan how much they appreciate, respect, admire and value her, and you’ve got a problem with her being gracious in the face of that?

It’s clear that Meghan and Harry were both surprised and touched by the way so many people went out of their way to embrace Meghan and ensure that she felt their welcome. It’s not as though they demanded flowers or strong-armed people into hugging them. That elderly lady was paying Meghan the highest compliment, to my mind. Signalling to the world that she saw Meghan as a kind human being who had been badly maligned by hostile forces. She did not have to do this. She chose to. And it was significant, especially as UK media would have you believe that she (an old white lady) would be a natural supporter of the taxpayer-funded royals.

There’s nothing “royal” about it (though the leftovers have been trying and failing to copy everything the Sussexes used to do since they left, especially in their interactions with the public). This was a very “Harry and Meghan”-coded visit.

  48. Mel says:

I’ve been watching clips of the visit on IG. It was HUGELY successful. No one booed them. There were lots of hugs, Harry scratched some guys beard and an old woman kissed Megan’s hand. Lots of hugs, tears and cheers. Let them stay mad. I wonder how long it’ll be until we see Kate in head-to-toe Oxblood. Start the count down.

  49. Lover says:

I covet that coat. The skirt is beautiful.

  50. Fredi says:

The HUGGING!!! That is REALLY gonna drive ’em nuts! LOL
