Did John Krasinski say something about ‘divorce’ to Emily Blunt at the Globes?

We barely talked about Emily Blunt at the Golden Globes on Sunday, where she wore an ice-skater-looking McQueen gown and walked the carpet with her husband John Krasinski. Is it just me or does Emily just sort of float through these awards seasons all the time? She gets nominated consistently but never wins anything, so she dutifully shows up all the time and it’s just…whatever. Maybe she’s turning into another Amy Adams, always a nominee and never a winner. Anyway, I know I’m late to this but it’s been all over social media this week. While Emily and John were on the Globes carpet, someone got a video of them where it looked and sounded like John said something about how he couldn’t wait to divorce her.

That’s the debate. Did he say something about “divorce” – as in “I cannot wait to divorce you” – or was it something else entirely? Some people think he was saying something about the weather. Watching it for the tenth time, I think he said something was “the worst,” not “divorce.”

Like, say what you will about John and Emily and maybe they’re nowhere near the perfect transatlantic couple their fans hope they are, but I seriously doubt that John would be so cruel as to say something about divorce to Emily on the carpet of an awards show in which she was nominated! Like, even if you make the leap to say that they’re splitting up, he wouldn’t do that to her in public. Also: on Tuesday night, Emily went solo to the Governors Awards. No John. I suspect it’s less about “they’re getting a divorce” and more about “John is tired of the awards-season rigamarole.”

His choice of tuxedo just proves how over the awards season he already is…

  2. Mia4s says:

She’s a long way from Amy Adams, Amy has six Oscar nominations and if Emily is nominated for Oppenheimer that will be her first Oscar nomination!

I’m so done with the “lip reader” “body language” nonsense. If the people “translating” were that good at their job I doubt they’d be working for the Daily Mail. 🙄

  3. Terri says:

    “this is the worst” maybe?

I realize Hollywood doesn’t treat marriage like most, but John really works his nice guy family image, so I can’t believe he’s say divorce in front of everyone and right before an award ceremony.

    • BQM says:

I agree. Plus the weather was apparently awful so he could’ve been referring to it. Or the noise or the whole awards season nonsense.

      • sunny says:

Yeah, i like this take. I can’t see him discussing divorce openly even if they were separating. They seem stable to me.

However, I would not be surprised if they were mocking something or complaining. One of my favourites on Instagram who talks about entertainment, culture, and fashion was naming his favourite white women of the year(for context he is Black and queer) and he named Emily Blunt to the list. And part of his rationale was that she is not afraid to talk shit to her husband and then told a story of seeing them in an LA gym and he was doing a bunch of burpees or suicides in a row and Jon said to Emily, “I could totally do that,” and she responded, “No, no you could not.” lol.

    • Kate says:

Yeah, there is no conceivable way to me that he is non-sarcastically saying he can’t wait to get divorced in that crowd with reporters everywhere. I agree it’s likely another word like the worst or indoors that lip reads a little similarly or MAYBE him making a joke about getting divorced (although still can’t really imagine that given the context). People really are thinking they are expert lip readers these days and using that to create the most drama, what gives?!

      • HufflepuffLizLemon says:

I would jokingly threaten my husband like, “if you keep getting nominated for this shit, I’m going to divorce you” as a way to bring levity to a tense situation, but we’re also really sarcastic to each other.

      • Kate says:

Yeah I could potentially see that, although think even if they’d joke like that in private they would be unlikely to do so in public given they would know how twisted that could get by all of us speculators.

  4. Jan90067 says:

Eh, I think it was more along the lines of: “I can’t wait to get INDOORS”. It was *VERY* windy and cold here!.

And yes, I realize “cold” in LA (low to mid 50s) is not considered cold in some places, but for those of us that live here, that’s freezing! lol).

    • Hello Kitty says:

my brother lives in LA and so I’ve spent a good amount of time there. For some reason 50s in LA feels absolutely freezing, like more cold than New York in December. It doesn’t make sense but it’s true. Must have to do with the desert/mountain/dry environment.

    • CC says:

He better get indoors! People’s luggage isn’t going to bellhop itself!

    • ZombieLis says:

I read other people’s comments where they thought that’s what he was saying (about getting indoors) and that’s what it sounds like to me too.

    * I was replying to a comment about the dress being unflattering to Emily that has since wisely been deleted.

    Women have organs you know.
Organs in our torso. They are supposed to be there. One of the organs – uterus – doubles in size every month. Imagine that. Le. F-ing. Gasp.

If he did say divorce – I can easily see it being a joke. Like dear god you keep getting nominated for all these awards. I need to divorce you so I can stay home in my pjs. Cuz I wouldn’t get invited otherwise.

It’s his kind of self deprecating humor. Or maybe he’s a turd. Or maybe he said oh yeah. Being out of the house on a date with my BEAUTIFUL wife? It’s the worst. Which again is funny.

    I hope he’s not a dick.

    • It Really Is You, Not Me says:

I also think it was a likely a joke about hating awards season. My husband and I have all kinds of inappropriate jokes between us that I wouldn’t admit to if someone heard them. They seem like the kind of couple to have that sense of humor with each other.

    • Cora says:

Well, I’ll say it then. The pattern on that dress is not flattering. That is not a comment on Emily’s body. Emily is a beautiful woman. It is the dress that is not beautiful.

  6. atorontogal says:

If he did say it, I assumed it was along the lines of JLaw saying if she didn’t win she was leaving. 🤷‍♀️

  7. Becks1 says:

If he did say divorce (I can’t tell if its divorce or “the worst” or “indoors”) it seems to have been a total joke because Emily didn’t even bat an eye.

And even if their marriage is on the rocks I just dont seem him threatening divorce like that on the red carpet at the Golden globes.

  8. girl_ninja says:

I’ve always enjoyed them and adore Emily. They are a really dynamic duo and their collaborations have been brilliant. I hope that they are happily married. But we all know that we never really know what’s going on these marriages.

  9. Torttu says:

I can’t stand him. There’s something weirdly fake about him.

    • lucy2 says:

I used to be a big fan around the time of the Office, but I too now get a weird fake vibe from him. Maybe I’m wrong and he’s an awesome guy, but he always seems “on” and not terribly genuine? I don’t know.

    • outoftheshadows says:

My understanding is that he worked hard on learning sign language in order to hire a deaf actress, Millicent Simmonds, for A Quiet Place. Maybe he’s a jerk, but I was impressed by that, because he insisted on hiring a deaf person for a deaf role, and went out of his usual skill set to do so.

  10. Grant says:

Emily Blunt has never been nominated for an Oscar before so she’s not anywhere near Amy Adams’s level. I do enjoy her performances though and I think it’s largely insane that Oppenheimer will net her her first Oscar nomination. She almost got a nom years back for her scene-stealing supporting turn in The Devil Wears Prada but I believe that Abigail Breslin ended up taking her spot when the Oscar noms were announced.

  11. NG_76 says:

I watched the video a few times and to me it looks like he says I can’t to get inside. It was very cold and windy.

  12. Mel says:

One thing I can say with confidence is that these body language/ lip reader “experts” are usually full of crap . Leave them alone, if they do get divorced or stay together, it’s all their business.

  13. Jayne says:

I went to school briefly with John 20 years ago. If he’s the same guy, mostly, and IF he said what’s being claimed, he was likely making a joke with/out a straight face. Or these idiot lip readers got it wrong, which is the most probable option.

  14. CC says:

I’ve seen the trailer for the upcoming family film “IF” a couple times now, and it annoys me that text says, “From the imagination of John Krasinski.” When did Krasinski gain visionary status? The CGI also looks pretty bad.

  15. Flamingo says:

Sounds like he was just goofing or their inside joke – you have to take pictures and smile and be happy. While he says ‘I can’t wait to divorce you’ as the opposite while smiling. A joke, full stop. Not for one second do I think he meant divorce literally. Or he was just cold and wanted to go inside and said I can’t wait to get inside. It was garbled at the end.

Either way, this whole lip-reading thing is getting a bit creepy and waaay out of context.

  16. Lisa says:

Yes, she looks like an ice skater and he looks like a theatre usher … if we are going to focus on her outfit let’s not give big boy a pass, he looks weird af too
