Queen Camilla’s friends used to call her ‘Lorraine,’ a play on ‘le Reine’

Queen Camilla has always wanted to be queen. She refused to even be called “Queen Consort,” and she especially did not want to be called Princess Consort, which was the compromise Charles and his staff worked out when Charles married Camilla in 2005. Back then, Camilla was loathed across the board, so Charles promised that when he became king, Camilla would be “Princess Consort.” Then in 2022, in QEII’s final months, Charles manipulated his mother into “signing off” on calling Camilla “queen consort.” As soon as QEII was dead, wouldn’t you know, “consort” got dropped in a hurry. All of which to say, Camilla and her friends can neigh their denials until they’re blue in the face, but we’ve always known that Camilla waged a decades-long campaign all for this. Now that stupid new Robert Hardman biography of Charles admits as much too. Apparently, Camilla’s friends always called her “Lorraine,” a play on “le Reine.”

Queen Camilla was affectionately given the nickname of ‘Lorraine’ – a play on the French for the Queen, la Reine – by family and friends. The amusing revelation is made in the latest instalment of Robert Hardman’s new biography of King Charles being exclusively serialised by the Daily Mail.

Back in the days when it seemed there was no question of the then Duchess of Cornwall becoming Queen, Hardman writes, her family gave her the nickname ‘Lorraine’. ‘She always saw the funny side of that – even if Prince Charles did not,’ says a friend.

Her change in circumstances even came as a shock to Camilla herself. Hardman reveals that it took quite some time before the new Queen would even respond to her new status. Passing references or memos or questions to ‘Her Majesty’ would meet with blank looks until it suddenly dawned that they were referring to her. Her presence has, notably, had a soothing effect on the King.

Hardman says: ‘Now, people are worried about upsetting the King. They know he can get very cross about quite minor things and they have yet to find out how he will react in certain situations. At the same time, they know that Queen Camilla is a strong voice of common sense in that regard.’

The King’s old university friend, Lord Chartres, adds: ‘That’s one of the reasons why Queen Camilla is so marvellous. She can be robust in her views and that allows him to relax. When things go wrong and you have to keep being nice, you need an intimate who can talk you down.’

Camilla is indeed described as an ‘intrinsically happy character’ who lifts the mood around her ‘and, more importantly, around the King’.

‘She has got a great twinkle and it comes out very readily,’ says the Marchioness of Lansdowne, one of her oldest friends. ‘It puts people at their ease very quickly… She knows when to wink at a bishop, but when not to – which I think is a rather endearing quality.’

[From The Daily Mail]

“Passing references or memos or questions to ‘Her Majesty’ would meet with blank looks until it suddenly dawned that they were referring to her.” No, I actually understand that because for the past year, someone will say or write something about “the queen,” and I’m like “wait, when did QEII do that?” Then it occurs to me that they’re talking about Camilla. Anyway, they’re laying it on pretty thick, which shows you which offices briefed Robert Hardman. This book is heavily sourced from Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace, which begs the question… why are they still trying to convince everyone that QEII was incandescent with rage over her great-granddaughter’s name? Also: Camilla would absolutely prefer for people to know her “Lorraine” nickname rather than the nickname Diana created for her: The Rottweiler.

How clever and amusing (eyeroll). “They know he can get very cross about quite minor things.” So now acknowledging KC as the rage monster too.

  2. Harla A Brazen Hussy says:

Just noticed that the “queens” fancy hat is taller than the kings! Lol, these people are just a joke!

  3. GrnieWnie says:

La reine…surprised they didn’t call her Regina

  4. I prefer Horsilla but ok Lorraine and it makes sense seeing that she was always in it for that crown to be placed on her head . She received it with that nasty smirk on her face when she finally achieved her goal.

    • Where'sMyTiara says:

Bride of Chucky just… fits, somehow.

The woman is a horror show and she went out of her way to make Diana’s life hell. Not content to stop there she waged a (successful) campaign to drive a wedge between Chucky and his sons/other blood relatives.

“Camilla would absolutely prefer for people to know her “Lorraine” nickname rather than the nickname Diana created for her: The Rottweiler.”

    LOL

    • Brassy Rebel says:

Personally, I’m sticking with “the Rottweiler”. And I don’t believe for a minute that when someone addresses her as Your Majesty, she doesn’t reply immediately. She probably has always answered to that. 😉

  6. Concern Fae says:

“Bishop winker” is moving into my insult rotation.

  7. VilleRose says:

That is actually quite amusing about Lorraine though very silly. As a native French speaker, I find the Lorraine nickname creative though not original. I’ve always associated that name with Back to the Future. I am still not used to hearing “Queen Camilla” even after a year of QEII’s death so she’s just going to be “Consort Camilla” in my head. I don’t think she even really likes being Queen but she’s old and has been with Charles for so long, what else is she going to do for the rest of her life.

    • Jais says:

Nah, I think she likes being queen. Maybe not all the engagements but certainly the perks.

      • VilleRose says:

What are the perks though? Seriously asking. Apart from wearing some jewels and fancy dresses to formal occasions… she hates overseas travel and she’d rather spend time with her kid and grandkids. Palaces are huge and not personal to live in. People always talk about the “royal perks” without specifying what they are. Yes you have staff but they gossip and sell stories to the press about you. I don’t see any perks to being royal at all.

      • Jais says:

It’s not my idea of perks either. But I didn’t have an affair with a married king while calling up papers to trash his wife. Her proximity to Charles has always been a choice and has given her perks, whether it’s perks any of us would want or not.

      • BeanieBean says:

Perks?: never worrying about paying the rent or mortgage; never worrying about your next meal; never worrying whether you can pay your electricity AND heating bills that month; never worrying about taking time off from work for an operation; always having clean air to breathe, clean water to drink. And that’s just off the top of my head.

    • WiththeAmerican says:

She got her entire family lined up for life, made sure they were on that balcony, yeah she got the perks and she loves them.

You don’t end up getting your Prince lover to dump his wife and marry you in the end if you don’t crave power.

While I’ve forgotten most French I had learned, I still remember a few and definitely know several English words to call her.

“Now people are worried about upsetting the King”…Now? Why are they worried now? and” you need an intimate who can talk you down…” So there’s an incandescent king AND incandescent prince? Good grief! Interesting that everyone except Cams, W, and Raggedy Andy seem to be worried about upsetting the Petty Cash king.

“She knows when to wink at a bishop and when not to…” Interesting tidbit. When did it become appropriate and normal to go around winking at bishops? Is trashCam harassing bishops? Since C-Rex is head of the COE, who would the bishops complain to?

    • Eurydice says:

Yes, that struck me, too. People have had 75 years to get used to Charles’ behavior and what does and doesn’t upset him. That’s not going to change now that he’s king.

  9. Jay says:

So Camilla’s friends referred to her by, basically, a codename for queen? Is that kind of…shady?

If someone called me “la reine”, I would assume it was sarcastic, a way to insinuate haughtiness. It could even be a nasty way of pointing out that, at one point, it was unlikely she would get the “real” title. It’s also notable that Charles was not amused by it, and I guess it’s not surprising that the royal staff hasn’t taken to it yet. I wonder if the real stuffy courtiers will ever adjust.

    • BeanieBean says:

My mom’s older sister called her ‘queenie’ when they were kids. She was jealous that my mom didn’t have to take care of the younger siblings & she did.

  10. Lurker25 says:

Diana called her the Rottweiler bc those dogs are known for sinking their teeth in and not letting go, right?

I’ve been thinking about cheating/affairs recently and how the prevailing consensus (now) is that the married cheater is more culpable than the affair partner, because the latter didn’t make and vows of fidelity or legal contacts.

    Which… Sure, yes, of course.

    But.

I’ve met so many damn women who see getting some other woman’s SO as the ultimate validation. (Yes looking at you Ariana.) The more ties (living together? Extra point. Married? Double points. Married with kids? Bonanza points) the better.

Because life is a competition for male attention and taking it from someone who thought they already had it means winning more.

Only these women can’t “win” fair and square in this stupid “game”… They’re too chickenshit to let the other woman know that there is a competition afoot. They cheat.

None of this is about letting the man off the hook (and obviously ignores roles being reversed, gay couples etc – I’m not speaking to any of that. Just about cis het women) and maybe I’m way off base.

But doesn’t Camilla embody this? She wanted Andrew parker bowles, not Charles. But she didn’t want Diana to have him. The marriage and kids? Extra points. Diana’s beauty? Super extra points. Break up a royal marriage? ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPION.

In the Camilla versus other women games, she’s going to gallop down the final stretch to win the gold cup, no matter who she maims along the way.

    • Emme says:

      @Lurker25, 💯 agree

    • bisynaptic says:

That’s an interesting way of looking at it. My sense is she didn’t necessarily want to be married to Charles, she wanted APB; but, once he “outed” them, publicly, APB had to divorce her, so she had no better option than to marry Charles. He cornered her, in a way.

  11. Lauren West says:

Considering how much of the public still dislike Camilla, who authorized these disclosures? Rather than making Camilla look good it makes Charles look even worse, and people already don’t like Charles.

  12. Lau says:

I saw a headline about that nickname on the DM some days ago and deciding not to read the article (because I don’t care) I really thought they were calling her Lorraine and that it had something to do with Charles’ corronation quiche.

  13. Andrea says:

“Queen consort” has never been an official title, it’s a descriptor like “Queen regnant” which is what QE2 was. Camilla is the Queen consort (Google her right now and it pops up on the info box). In The wife of a King is always a Queen unless they had a morganatic marriage, which they didn’t. Princess Consort was a nonsense smokescreen, I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t even have been legal.

  14. yarema says:

Okay the headline is killing me because “reine” in french is feminine: “la reine”. So with the masculine “le” I thought they were calling her “le renne” which means reindeer. I don’t know why this is so funny to me.

  15. JEB says:

Horsilla or Rottweiler, just don’t ruin delicious Quiche Lorraine for me by associating it with her!
