Guardian: Duchess Meghan is ‘soft power dynamite,’ the Waleses are kryptonite

On Tuesday night, the photos and videos of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in Jamaica began coming out on social media. As soon as the video of Harry and Meghan warmly greeting Prime Minister Andrew Holness came out, I knew we would be in for a complete sh-tstorm in the British media. Holness will always be famous in royal media circles as the prime minister who called Prince William and Kate into his office in 2022 and fired them live on camera, without even offering them a seat. He kept them standing as he told them that Jamaica was “moving on” from the Windsors’ colonialist sh-tshow. That side-by-side, of Holness firing W&K and then warmly greeting the Sussexes two years later, will live rent-free in the Windsors’ heads for eternity. Since the One Love premiere, the British media has predictably gone crazy, screaming and crying about Harry & Meghan’s easy soft diplomacy and charisma. Well, the Guardian’s Nels Abbey had a fantastic column about just how badly Britain f–ked up:

A popular Nigerian adage says “the cow never knows the value of its tail until it is chopped off”. In many tragic ways, this speaks to today’s Britain. From EU membership, to competent leadership, to low inflation, it seems necessary for Britain to lose things to appreciate their importance. This week, look at Prince Harry and Meghan being feted in Jamaica. See the soft-power skills they carry with them, and think about that Nigerian adage.

In much of the British media, Harry and Meghan are all-year panto villains. But around the world, they could not be more loved – often for the very reasons they are despised in the British media. They are the soft power we could have enjoyed with the increasingly dominant, increasingly self-confident non-white world, especially the Commonwealth.

It’s not just that they are royals. Prince William and Kate headed to “no problem” Jamaica in 2022, and encountered problems aplenty. As their PR fiasco unfolded, they were derided for shaking hands with Jamaican children through wire fences, and for motoring viceroy-style through crowded streets in a fancy Land Rover. At the nightmare’s end, Jamaica basically handed Britain its P45, informing the royals of its intention to be a republic, to “move on”.

And it’s not just that Harry and Meghan are famous. David Cameron’s 2015 visit to Jamaica as prime minister was seen as another giant clunker. But then he did self-sabotage there, swatting away reparations requests, urging Jamaicans to “move on” from slavery and offering to fund the building of a prison to house the Jamaican-origin criminals whom Britain didn’t want. As a figure of renown, and, of course, a descendent of enslavers, he could have handled it all better.

Still, Harry has something the royals he left behind and the likes of Chillax Cameron can never have. He has familiarity, an ease with difference – and he has Meghan. In 2012, he also had the love of the UK press and public. He was praised for his warm embrace of the then Jamaican PM, Portia Simpson-Miller, and was photographed larking about with Usain Bolt. “He has shown himself to be a natural ambassador, a diplomat in a very real sense – one hug from him has (at least partly) dissipated the bad feeling of generations … It is inconceivable that any other royal could have pulled this off quite so effectively,” gushed the Mail on Sunday.

But that was then, before the British media’s own version of Orwell’s “two minutes hate” became a thing. Now, much of the press sees Harry and Meghan glad-handing and being glad-handed in Jamaica, surfing the love at the premiere of the Bob Marley biopic, and they don’t much like it. “Meghan and Harry pose next to anti-royal Jamaican prime minister who wants to ditch the monarchy and warned Wills and Kate they’ll never be king and queen of his nation – as Charles undergoes prostate surgery and the Princess of Wales recovers in hospital,” thundered the Mail. “The hubris of Harry and Meghan’s Jamaican photoshoot,” snorted the Spectator. “Crown fools: ‘Provocative’ Harry & Meghan spark royal row as they meet Jamaican politicians plotting to oust Charles as head of state,” jeered the Sun.

Britain understood Harry’s value and soft power in 2012, so what changed? Answer: Harry fell in love with, and married, a Black woman. That could have been a boon for this country, here and abroad; instead it’s a might-have-been. And what might have been to our reputational benefit is what has been happening in Jamaica.

The UK headlines and sour grapes tell you one thing: we messed up and we know it. Meghan was, and remains, soft-power dynamite, and all we have now is the soft-power kryptonite of Wills and Kate and the Windsor “firm” that spurned her. Still, that’s us: we never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

[From The Guardian]

On Wednesday, I wrote: “I wonder what it feels like for the British royal reporters to lose this badly, and have to narrate their own pathetic irrelevance.” Well, at least one Guardian columnist is admitting as much. “Meghan was, and remains, soft-power dynamite, and all we have now is the soft-power kryptonite of Wills and Kate and the Windsor “firm” that spurned her.” You might even say that Meghan was “spurned” in the first place because she was so good at the job, because she was so beautiful, charismatic, effervescent, intelligent, diplomatic and hard-working. It’s not like Britain didn’t understand that Meghan would be/could be such a great ambassador for Britain – they understood it and they were mad that a Black woman overshadowed their royal saltines. Anyway, we should totally start calling them “soft-power kryptonite Wills and Kate.”

The flop tour pictures will always be funny. At the time though it was infuriating. PWilly and kkKate’s legacy will be as the biggest losers.

    • They had a power couple in Harry and Meg . Charisma, integrity and a willingness to do the work. Jealousy rules with the leftovers that’s all they got. They lost a whole lot when they got rid of the power couple and to that I say too bad so sad for you you got what you wished for and now you deal with it.

    • Caribbean says:

It is truly shocking to me how the British Media want their hate to affect everything H & M touch. They cannot fathom that, just based on how H & M were treated, that they will be embraced in the Caribbean. It is not like some other people that know better, but the money-making off the hate on H, and especially Meghan, is too enticing.

Since we are a ‘conspiracy’ society now 😊 I am very inclined to believe that this role-out of medical issues is very convenient, now no one it is talking about the Monarchy’s support of Prince Andrew.

    • BeanieBean says:

I don’t think I noticed it at the time, but somebody pointed this out the other day: Kate leans away from even a statue of a black person. I mean, wow.

      • Christine says:

The Wails lean away from each other, more often than not, in photos too. Once someone pointed it out here, I can’t unsee it.

      • therese says:

What I always notice any time a photo of Archie’s baptism family portrait is shown, is that Kate is seated by Doria, who is standing beside her, and Kate is leaning away from her. It’s so noticeable to me.
Came on here to say that now there are two papers that have spoken the truth and called a spade a spade. It’s about time, and I love it, and it makes me feel better. Salve to the soul. I love that one reporter said that H & M couldn’t be more loved in the rest of the world.

      • LisaDawn says:

        @therese
I’m no Kate apologist, but in the photo I’ve seen she’s not sitting anywhere near Doria. She’s terrible enough on her own. We don’t need to exaggerate.

      • equality says:

I think @therese is thinking of one of H&M’s wedding photos where Kate is sitting with Charlotte in her lap.

  2. Ameerah M says:

I just finished reading this piece and it’s SO good. He makes amazing points. My favorite part is the final paragraph and the sentence “We never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity”. If that doesn’t sum up the BRF and the UK press I don’t know what does.

    • fineskylark says:

The 2 minute hate bit is so perfect.

    • Megan says:

A real life fairytale landed in their laps and they completely blew it.

      • acha says:

The fairy tale being a modern one:
A relevant, talented, hard-working biracial/Black woman manages to save an abused, trapped white man by dint of her excellent Black friends.

    • Carmen says:

As soon as the hate campaign started I said Harry and Meghan made the colossal mistake of upstaging William and Kate just by being their natural selves, and the royals are never going to let them live it down. I mean, let’s face it, a sea slug could upstage William and Kate with minimal effort.

      • FlamingHotCheetos2021 says:

Well, yes, the sea slug DOES something.

Honestly, all the charisma and charm and intelligence of a slightly moldy bag of turnips, that lot.

  3. LadyE says:

Read this earlier, excellent op-ed. I think the larger issue is that the UK generally needs to come to terms with the *end* of empire and it’s place as a global power from that history. I work with Brits, particularly in the UK government, quite a bit and one of the things that is really noticeable is the difficulty they have processing how their history is viewed externally- it’s really akin to an identity crisis, the thing that so many have been taught to be proud of and has in fact been a major factor in their country’s outsized influence and wealth is not only not appreciated by others, but viewed as resulting in predominantly negative consequences.

Ultimately the Uk, not just the BM and government, needs to internalize that they can only be equal to other countries, not more than, not paternalistic, not revered and not even necessarily in the lead of the relationship- only equal. Meghan and Harry (as did Diana) seem to genuinely view Commonwealth countries this way- not as their superiors, but equals. They also seem to genuinely like and respect the countries, their cultures, and people. The legacy of colonialism is complicated. I was honestly surprised at the level of expressed affection/non-dislike in a number of African former colonies at the UK and even BM (though this was during QEII’s time, so really only discussed in relation to her specifically). I don’t think most people are “anti-monarchy” or anti-UK because of colonialism in the sense that they want to banish the UK or cut off all contact. I think most countries and people, like Jamaica, are pretty fine with the Brits and even the Royal family as long the UK and BM behave in a friendly, respectful manner that is based in equality. Sadly, I think this identity crisis is going to continue for some time

    • seaflower says:

      Well said.

    • Proud Mary says:

The socialist, Richard Wolff, said something similar about Britian’s inability to accept the lost of empire. He called them delusional for believing that they are still a major player on the world stage. Their global role, in his view: “America’s poodle.” And you know what, as in the case of the old testament Joseph and his brothers, I truly believe that the BRF will someday become Harry’s poodle. That’s why Harry has to remain vigilant and continue to focus on building his own empire, rather than waste his energy on reconciliation.

      • LadyE says:

I mean I wouldn’t say poodle lol, but yeah the UK is a declining world power, as are a number of other countries, including US (though still massively powerful, not longer at our zenith).

I think that there’s a risk around a lot of the H&M rhetoric that can inadvertently signal endorsement of the continued colonial power structures remaining in place. H&M are soft power dynamite *only* so far as they are not trying to discourage Jamaica or any other Commonwealth country from removing the BM as head of state and any other necessary reforms related to sovereignty and self-determination. If they were to do this or be perceived to be pushing that agenda in their visits, they would: a) not be successful; b) not be welcomed in the same way; and c) (less important lol) I would be very disappointed in them. Harry and Meghan would not be anymore successful than Kate and Will in a “charm offensive” on behalf of the BM or UK if that was the desired outcome. And I think it’s really important to stress that this outcome should *fail*. But, like I said in my op, ultimately the UK itself has to accept this and do so graciously and with total understanding and support. No country should have a foreign head of state that they have no choice in. That is just completely unacceptable.

    • Mel says:

@ LadyE This is an EXCELLENT assessment. They don’t realize that their “colonizing” had a detrimental effect and they are reaping the rewards of it. The hubris behind expecting people of color to continue to let you “rule” over them. They don’t get it.

      • Christine says:

Agreed, and to continue to stamp your foot and call people “anti-monarchy” when they are just pro THEIR OWN COUNTRY being governed by their own people is just childish.

The sycophantic British media has done them no favors by continuing to write saccharine sweet fluff pieces about the monarchy’s role in modern times. They haven’t been able to get out of the echo chamber and grow up.

I beg you all to drop the term “charm offensive” immediately. You aren’t charming anyone but the loyal monarchists in England, who you might notice are dying off.

      • Mel says:

@ Christine I wish they would actually define their roles. What do they do? What do they add? Why are they needed? If they really had to answer this question they would not be able to give answers that would make their expense feasible. Cutting ribbons, babbling about early years, showing up at shelters EMPTY HANDED is not providing leadership. Especially to the tune of MILLIONS per year at the cost of the taxpayer. The press continues to defend this antiquated system instead of demanding that they really modernize, really contribute and most of all GET off the back of the taxpayer.

    • Sugar Plum says:

LadyE everything you have said is so spot on. Many former British colonies aren’t so much anti UK or anti monarchy as they are anti being treated with condescension and disrespect simply because they were once subjugated by, and have now gained their independence from, Britain. I don’t understand why the UK finds it so hard to get this. Long may their arrogance continue to blow up in their faces.

    • jemmy says:

      @Lady E -💯
Therein lies the problem – the loss of the British identity which foe close to 1000 years has been based on the class system epitomised by the royal family. If the RF lose their relevance , then the whole structure upon which the British culture is based loses its identity and relevance. Also the typical brit is really ignorant of the atrocities committed by their patriots and have been brainwashed to believe that they are superior. Even the rota believe what they are doing is for King and Country and cannot see how absurd they are .

    • Lisa says:

An Irish columnist once described Brexit as a spasm of empire and I quite agree. The Brits regularly go through these.

  4. Jais says:

Quite a few guardian columnists have written snarky sussex articles where they even repeat tabloid talking points about privacy. But this one! This one is sublime. Nels Abbey gets to the heart of it. They gushed over Harry in Jamaica in 2012 while now they practically accuse him of treason for attending a movie premiere. And what changed? He married a black woman.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

It sums up the whole sordid history of how the gutter press has gone from loving Harry to despising him and does so beautifully. Meghan, the Black woman, was the turning point. The racist roots of Sussex hate are undeniable.

    • Laura D says:

@Jais – I stopped my subscription of the Guardian for the snark aimed at H&M (and I let them know this was the reason in no uncertain terms.) I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the writer of this column is a black Briton who can empathise with the crape Meghan has had thrown at her since day one. This is the type of article I would expect from the Guardian. It’s not a puff piece it’s stating facts about the monarchy and what they’ve lost. It would benefit KCIII to read this article whilst he’s recuperating and start making the necessary phone calls to the Prime Minister to help him sort this mess out. They need to reinstate Harry’s security, give him a secure home in the UK and give him a military patronage so that he can wear a uniform when a occasion is called on for him to do so.

    • Christine says:

He really does hit all of the points concisely. This is so well done I want to frame it and hang it on the wall at the British embassy in LA.

    • Square2 says:

Not just a black woman, but a black woman who knows her self-worth, has a successful career, has kindness & empathy, and is NOT bowing down to “white masters”. That’s what infuriating the BRF & BM.

    • AMTC says:

@LauraD I cancelled my Private Eye subscription for the same reason.

  5. ales says:

Soft power kryptonite or a debilitating virus. Khate and William are so narcissistic they cannot see that what they are doing is destroying the british monarchy and also their cash cows. There is no one else to blame for their laziness and blatant disregard for royal duties and the commonwealth. Alienating people with their self perceived superiority when they have no obvious talents other than Williams birthright and Khate stalked him until he married her after everyone else had refused him. It seems that they believe they do not have to do anything much and that people should be adoring and praising them just because of their titles and nothing else.

    • Teagirl says:

      Word!

    • Proud Mary says:

“They believe they do not have to do anything much.” But isn’t that the essence of a hereditary monarchy? That’s why the whole idea that these people “work” is such a fraud. As you well note, William and Charles are positioned as such because they entered the world from the right V-jay, at the right time, not because they have any specified talent. The problem for them is that they are facing headwinds where fewer people accept this kind of privilege. Britain is not the global super power any longer, America is. And in the US, with minor exceptions, we value hard work and self-sufficiency. That’s why the monarchy needed Harry and Meghan: not only are they hardworking and dynamic, the Sussexes have the charisma that other so-called hardworking royals lack.

  6. Unmellow Yellow says:

I seriously cackled out loud remembering Wills & Kate & the Monarchy getting fired live on tv without being asked to sit down. 😊😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🖖😎 That was such a gangster move from the Jamacaian PM 👏👏👏

    • Over it says:

      🤣🤣🤣yes , don’t bother sitting, you won’t be staying 🤣🤣🤣

    • LongTimeLurker says:

Oooh yes, me too! They (WanK) had no idea how to handle that. Off-topic but every time I see the Jamaican Prime Minister’s name in these articles “Andrew Holness” I accidentally read it as: “Andrew Hotness”.

Not sure why but I don’t think I’m wrong. I’ll see myself out now…

  7. Moniquep says:

Someone please check outside to see if there are pigs flying!!! Finally! Someone speaks the truth about what’s really going on over on Salt island. I looooove the last line “we never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity “. This article has made my day. Haahahaha…….. And oh yeah krypto will and Kate! I’m dead!

    • Jules says:

      Lol – Same! For my own karma’s sake, I’m trying not to savor the cold revenge too much… But it’s undeniably s w e e t. :b

  8. Myeh says:

“They are the soft power we could have enjoyed with the increasingly dominant, increasingly self-confident non-white world, especially the Commonwealth”. Wtf please tell me you disapprove and are intimidated when people demand not to be treated like your own private loot boxes… The entire tone of the article including Britain having to miss an opportunity in order to appreciate it sounds like racists trying to justify their racism with but that’s our right and how we learn as if dehumanizing someone and entire demographics of people is somehow acceptable to their learning how to human curve. Gross. These kinds of people can f**k right off

    • Anonymous says:

Please stop doing drugs. And when you’re sober, re-read the article, written by a Black Brit. Then also read the definition of “racism”.

      • ML says:

I understand how you got confused, but Myeh is pro Sussex: she’s agreeing with Nels Abbey. Jamaica doesn’t want to be treated as a “private loot box” and Britain is racist—they can eff off is what she’s saying.

  9. sparrow says:

This is what I mean when I say I miss them. I miss their modernity and their charisma, and their love and ease with people. And this is where my residual anger lies. We ****ed this up, royally! Well, they did. And I mean largely Kate and her husband. That woman could never have a sister in law in the BRF. It was never going to happen; she has major problems with other women. This article sums up my position totally.

  10. Dee(2) says:

I commented on another post about this article, and I agree this is the unabashed unvarnished truth telling that is needed. They screwed up. The thing is that they don’t even have to admit it. We all know people that once they realize that they were wrong will just never bring a subject up again. It’s their insistence on not only not acknowledging that they chased away assets because of their racism, but their continued need to chase after those assets and harass them. There’s a real sense of paternalism, ownership, and noblesse oblige that seems to overtake a lot of people in relation to the Commonwealth and to the Sussexes.

    • Christine says:

Agreed. It wasn’t enough to make Harry and Meghan flee for their lives (which is absolutely what they had to do), they continue to flog them in the media, all day, every day.

  11. Over it says:

They could have had not one but two bad b-ichs, but them done f up as usual. Meghan and Harry stay winning. Wank and buttons just stay
    One love

  12. Becks1 says:

It’s so nice to see someone over there admit it. the royal family messed up….well, royally….as did the rota, the British press, etc. and every time H&M step out its going to remind them how much they messed up.

  13. Anonymous says:

Finally someone with a brain is speaking up. Harry and Meghan are so much better off out of that steaming pile.

  14. QuiteContrary says:

Finally … someone acknowledges, in a thoughtful way, the enormity of the mistake of chasing H&M out of England.

The rota knows it, too, but they cannot acknowledge it with any grace, because they mindlessly and viciously followed royal marching orders and tapped into the racism of the worst elements of British society.

  15. Boxy Lady says:

I think it’s worthy to note that the writer of this column, Nels Abbey, is a black man. I think that adds at least one more layer of meaning to his observations.

  16. Cessily says:

Love the press that is coming out of Jamaica and now this.. I want to see more people calling it out in real time from now on.

  17. SCAR❤️❤️❤️❤️ says:

Yes “soft power kryptonite Wills & Kate” works for me. And when Wills becomes King we can call them KKK ( soft power Kryptonite King & Kate.)

Here’s one , when the British use the racist term ‘Chinese Whispers’ my blood boils. How about we change that to ‘British Whispers’ OR ‘UK Whispers’.

  18. Amy Bee says:

The article tells no lies. The British press meltdown is nothing but sour grapes and regrets.

  19. VilleRose says:

The British media went after Meghan because she outshined everyone in that crusty family, but most of all because she outshined Kate and William. That was the problem, her being more popular than the Cambridges and being a natural in the spotlight. It is very clear Kate is an introvert and I believe all the “gurning” she does as this website likes to call it is to overcompensate that she doesn’t feel comfortable in front of the cameras. So she does what she thinks is supposed to make her look like an extrovert and it falls flat because it is so forced and unnatural. Meghan is the complete opposite, an extrovert like Harry who doesn’t need to act and who likes meeting people and truly connecting with others. Had Harry been the heir, I’m not sure they would have gone after her so hard. No, Charles would not have wanted to share the spotlight with his glamorous daughter-in-law and he probably would have leaked an unflattering story here and there but not the onslaught that Kensington Palace allowed after the South Pacific tour.

Kate and William miscalculated and so did the British media. In a decade or so, we’ll get stupid documentaries with British talking heads lamenting what they destroyed.

    • Jais says:

So I agree that Meghan outshined everyone, but I don’t agree that Kate is an introvert. It must be awkward for anyone to have that level of attention but her exaggerated expressions for the cameras are not due to her being introverted. I’d argue she’s incurious about those around her and the dramatic expressions are to compensate for that and to get good pics for the tabloids.

      • VilleRose says:

Well Kate is not an extrovert, that much is clear. You can tell when someone is gregarious and bubbly and wants to socialize. Meghan is and everyone can tell. So for me Kate is the total opposite and an introvert. I also agree Kate is incurious but you can be an introvert and incurious. I also think her exaggerated expressions are for the camera but also for the wider public who sees them online/in the paper so people think “Wow she’s so engaged! So approachable!” But I also think she does that for the people present at whatever engagement she is at to make them think she’s friendly and interested when she’s not.

      • Ham & Cheese says:

She also spent a decade chasing Will for the role of being his wife and the eventual Prrincess of Wales. It’s been twenty years of her being in and/or around the BRF. THERE IS NO SURPRISE IN WHAT THE JOB WOULD ENTAIL. She had all that time to shore up her public speaking skills, to learn basic professionalism, etc. She had time and resources before and after marrying into the family.

She is the way she is because of her laziness and choices. Period.

      • Christine says:

Word, Jais. Kate could show up, having read up on who she is meeting and why, and then quietly ask questions that show she is interested. The problem is she just isn’t, and neither is Wills. They do not give a shit about anyone else, and it shows. Big time.

This isn’t about the ability to make a speech, it’s about empathy, of which they have none. Add that to being bone lazy, and they really are kryptonite.

    • Steph says:

@villerose, I don’t agree she’s an introvert. I think she’s an a-hole whose (who’s?) position went to her head. She isn’t uncomfortable around people, she dislikes being around people she views as below her. Her attitude and behavior is so much different around celebrities and top athletes.
Also, she isn’t uncomfortable around the cameras. She loves having her picture taken.

      • windyriver says:

@VilleRose – Seriously? Kate lives for the cameras. The attention is the only part of the “job” she likes. Her ability to find the cameras wherever she is and look right at them are remarkable. Past examples of her preening to garner attention and stand out – usually with her choice of clothes, jewelry, colors – are numerous. Getting out of the car at the recent state event in a bright red outfit with her skirt hiked up to her crotch was no accident.

That she doesn’t look gregarious and bubbly and wanting to socialize like Meghan doesn’t mean she’s an introvert, it means she doesn’t want to socialize with the people at the places she visits. She doesn’t like working, that’s why she does so little, and why she’s made no effort to improve her performance. Her exaggerated expressions in photos are to give the public the impression she’s relating to people and accomplishing something when it’s often clear from people in the background – especially if children are around – that they could care less about having her there.

    • Beach Dreams says:

Nah, Kate is NOT an introvert. Being a snobby, bigoted bitch does not equate to being an introvert. She always has an easy time flirting and socializing with men, and she practically beams whenever she gets to be the center of attention at any red carpet event and hobnob with celebrities. By all means, she seemed to enjoy preening amongst the turnip toffs until the Rose situation happened and they made it very clear via Tatler that they would support Rose over her. What we’ve seen from Kate over her many years in the public eye is snootiness, not introversion. She’s as insular as William, and sometimes that could come across to some people as being introverted, but she isn’t IMO.

    • Saucy&Sassy says:

VilleRose, an introvert doesn’t spend as mch time as KHate has showing her bum and nether parts. That recent showing of her leg getting out of the car was a choice. I cringe to think what the people in front of her saw. That’s not an introvert.

I think KHate has been told or trained to act a certain way in public–think of QE2. I suspect she thought that was all she had to do. Unfortunately, as we’ve discovered by watching her, she’s not capable of anything else. She lousy at speeches after all of these years and she uses exaggerated expressions because I guess we’re supposed to believe she’s actually engaged with whatever engagement she’s at. Again, it’s a choice to be this bad at it because she could and should have been getting lessons. I mean more than speech lessons. She should have been reading anything she could find on the charities where she’s the patron.

I believe the life she has is quite restrictive. It’s not just Wont telling her what to do. The grey men are probably always telling her what to do. And, then we have KFC and the Escort. The life she chose and still chooses is evidently the one she wants.

    • Tessa says:

Kate is not an introvert considering her behavior like wearing the bright red outfit and showing her legs as she got out of the car this only recently. All the fashion mishaps on tours and blatant attention seeking
She is lazy and does not want to improve her speech. And her attitude is bad

  20. Chaine says:

Devastating and brilliant critique of basically the entire nation, yeah? This will be the whole perspective 100 years from now when all of them and their petty jealousies are dead and gone.

  21. bubblegum dreams says:

Whenever I see Peg and Keen’s viceroy picture, I go back to the same question: Who was the fool that thought that would be a good idea and that it’s optics would not be problematic. That picture makes me cringe every time I see it.

  22. Mary Pester says:

Harry and Megan, two names that strike fear into the hearts of the Royal toadies and hatred into a lot of the British media, that added to the fact that the jealousy felt by willy and Katy are what feeds the press
They leak stories, they instruct their tame paps and the circle around the drain of the monarchy and it’s future continues.
Even the British government should look at these pictures and weep for what could and more importantly SHOULD have been. The Royals and the British government have not just shot themselves in the foot, they are now missing a whole leg, but the two best things about all of this, the TWO very BEST things about this are ONE, the buyers remorse that must be being felt by the media themselves, just look at all the brilliant headlines they could have had and TWO ditto number one for the Royals!
Hey Charlie, you know that pain in your arse, it’s called karma, and bet you think half in half out has a whole new outlook now 😂🌗

It’s a beautiful article but I wonder if the firm will allow it to stay on. I don’t trust anything coming out of that Island. Where were they 2019, 2020 & 2021 when the assault on the Sussexes were coming from every corner. Just like that woman editor from NZ apologized to Harry but Meghan for being a horrible human to ride on the Spare best selling book phenomenon. It’s good some obvious things are being said but they all can go scratch.

  24. swaz says:

I could have written this article because I’ve known this all along ❤ the sad thing is Meghan and Harry have become the British Media cash cow ☹

  25. BeanieBean says:

Slight alteration: instead of ‘soft power kryptonite Wills and Kate’ how about ‘Soft William’ & ‘Kryptonite Kate’?

  26. DeeSea says:

Someday, long after I’m gone, the British Empire will be future generations’ “Roman Empire.” This knowledge gives me some consolation, even though I won’t be around to enjoy the memes.

  27. Jaded says:

Excellent article. As the inimitable Margaret Atwood once said…“Stupidity is the same as evil if you judge by the results.” The results of the BRF’s entrenched racist, misogynistic and archaic mindset show how utterly stupid, thoughtless and arrogant they are that they can’t see the golden opportunity they had with Meghan and Harry, and how badly they blew it. ABOLISH THE MONARCHY.

Ftk Twigs meet SPK Will and Kate.

  29. Sid2 says:

The whole world knows Britain is a dying empire that ‘overestimate its impact on the global scene’. Scobie tried to explain to KCIII and the monarchists the reality of the changed world and the necessity for them to adopt to this changed condition. What The Guardian article elucidates, is Brits inability to adjust to their country’s transition from a global power past to presently being just basic. To the extent that British royal family’s role is as image promoter and preserver, while maintaining a controversial facade with pomp and circumstances may have worked before, it is dead at the door now. A coronation with gold gilded carriage and dead ermine fur capes? in 2023? Please!!!
Neither unimaginative, low energy soft-power Krytonites Will & Kate nor their handlers have the smarts or ability to prop up into the next decade a monarchy on severely handicapped last legs. This is true not only of the British monarchy but all currently existing monarchies. To quote The Economist:
“If monarchy did not exist, nobody would invent it today. Its legitimacy stems from ancient ritual and childish stories, not from a system based on reason and intended to achieve good governance. It transfers power through a mechanism which promotes congenital defects rather than intelligence. It is sexist, classist, racist and designed specifically to prevent diversity, equality and personal merit from creeping into its inbred ranks.”
The British monarchy and its supporters are like a wounded wild animal. They need to deflect viciously and distract from the inevitability of historical irrelevance. And with the help of the media are aggressively lashing out at the closest target, H & M, who by now must surely understand, animals do eat their young for survival.

  30. Saucy&Sassy says:

This is what it looks like when history is so whitewashed–or not even put in the history books–looks like. I wonder what the citizens would think if they knew exactly how Britain became an ‘Empire’? I wonder how many of them would understand why Commonwealth countries that have the Monarch as head of state want to be entirely autonomous from the UK?

It’s worrisome in the US because although some history has made it through, not all of it. It’s a tragedy that there are people who want to erase what is out there.

  31. Izzy says:

“ what changed? Answer: Harry fell in love with, and married, a Black woman.”

Finally, a British paper has said it out loud.

    • Christine says:

I know, and it’s an indictment on all of them that it took them this long. You wonder why you are increasingly irrelevant on the world stage?

    • ChattyCath says:

I noticed straightaway that coverage of Harry and Meghan became vindictive tripe as soon as she became pregnant. That raises the truly ugly spectre of ‘miscegenation’ which used to be dead and buried.

  32. AMTC says:

How long till we start hearing the derangers and BM calling Nels Abbey a traitor who should be stripped of citizenship and calling in Lady Hussey to interrogate him on ‘where he’s really from’ so he can be deported.

  33. blunt talker says:

That man wrote it in simple terms which explains a lot of the UK’s problems-you can’t keep reliving things from the past-learn from the past as it will enhance the future-when a country literally vomit scream and lose their minds over a movie preimere in one of the commonwealth countries shows the lack of kindness and being respected for continuing to have a relationship with the UK-a country looking out for their own future is not wrong-what is wrong is to make them an enemy for trying to improve their country and their people for the future-lauding over black and brown people is an evil outlook-if you want to get pass the slavery issue-this is one way to do it without bloodshed or hatred.-Harry and Meghan showed respect and kindness in a country trying to determine their future course.

  34. bisynaptic says:

I’m glad if the Guardian is turning its coverage around on the Sussexes. More of this, please.
