The 2024 Independent Spirit Awards were a mixed bag of good fashion & one protest

The Independent Spirit Awards are supposed to be pretty chill – just artists hanging out in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica. Usually, the most scandalous thing that happens is a raunchy joke. Not this year. This year, a couple (literally, two people) decided to protest the Spirit Awards. One of them had a bullhorn and he made a huge, loud ruckus, shouting variations of “Free Palestine.” The cops didn’t do anything, and so for more than an hour, independent filmmakers tried to talk over the noise. It set everybody on edge. You’ve got to think that similar “protests” are probably planned for the Oscars. I won’t argue about the guy’s politics, but I will say that I find it interesting that none of these protestors are ever around or outside Trump’s Nazi rallies.

As for the Spirit Award winners, it was a mixed night, mostly because the Spirits are doing the “genderless” acting categories (so every gender is nominated in the same acting categories). Some big winners, on the film side, included: Past Lives (Best Feature & Director), Jeffrey Wright (lead actor), Anatomy of a Fall (International Film), Dominic Sessa (Breakthrough Performance), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Supporting), American Fiction (Screenplay) and Showing Up (the Robert Altman Award). You can see the full list of winners here.

I’m including a mixed bag of some winners, presenters and nominees. Notable fashion: Anne Hathaway wore Valentino & bangs; Natalie Portman wore Balmain, Ali Wong wore Cong Tri, Michelle Williams’ ensemble is probably Chanel; Emma Corrin wore Miu Miu; Jessica Chastain wore Oscar de la Renta.

Why would a pro-Palestine protestor go to a Trump rally? Maybe if Trump becomes President again he will get protested. Some of these celebrities have the ear of the Democratic party, that’s why the pro-Palestine protestors go to these events. I hope somebody says something about the issue at the Oscars.

    • Ameerah M says:

Exactly this. And a lot of celebs who are politically active have been woefully silent about what’s going on. And they were in attendance of this awards show.

    • Liz says:

Agreed! Why would a Pro-Palestine supporter also need to go a Trump rally for anyone to take them seriously?

Also, I hate Trump – but I don’t see the equivalency between the two things.

    • MrsBanjo says:

Doubtful they’d ever protest him since a lot of them are talking about refusing to vote for Biden with FULL knowledge that could mean a Trump presidency. They don’t give a shit about anyone but themselves and their performative bullshit. They don’t actually care about Palestinians.

WHAT ARE THOSE GREEN STOCKINGS? ah! my eyes! 🙁

I know, me too they’re bleeding, but I think the spirit awards should filled with crazy outfits like that and not beautiful outfits like Anne Hathaway’s: beautiful I want it.

    Da’Vine Joys look is 🔥 🔥 🔥

I actually love all the ladies’ looks (especially Anne Hathaway’s apart from her bangs) but what ice skater basic b dress is Jessica Chastain wearing?! That is not an Independent Spirit awards dress.

  5. Grant says:

Jessica Chastain’s is my favorite look! It’s somehow simple but glamorous and intriguing at the same time! Plus, that color is gorgeous on her.

  6. Josephine says:

so much fashion!! Jeffrey Wright is aging like a fine wine. That man looked amazing.

Da’Vine Joy is gorgeous. That color is so rich and flattering as was the cut of the coat. Dang!!

Greta Lee looked wonderful as well.

Loved Anne H’s look top to bottom. The bangs soften the work she’s had because she has been looking stretched. The jumpsuit is perfect for her.

No pic of Dominic Sessa is a bummer. I loved his performance.

I don’t like Natalie Portman’s suit at all but the color is great for her.

  7. Kirsten says:

Greta Lee looked amazing. That dress is so cool on her.

Protesting actors at an awards show is like throwing paint on the Mona Lisa. It’s a stunt that has little to do with the cause and even less to do with the target.

  9. M says:

Charles Melton’s pants are ridiculously ugly.

  10. Roan Inish says:

Can anyone identify Greta Lee’s dress? I love her vibe even her non-red carpet looks.
