Brown: Prince William & Kate have been ‘frozen’ with ‘intense anxiety’ this year

Tina Brown was in rare form in the weeks before we learned that the Princess of Wales is being treated for cancer. Brown appeared on CBS just after the Mother’s Day photo fiasco, where she declared that “the wheels have come off” Kensington Palace and that the whole operation was “flailing.” Then Brown went to England last week to do some media and she was pretty brutal on Prince William and Kate’s whole operation and the lack of dignity. While she was in the UK, it looks like Brown caught up with her royal sources, because she’s been especially chatty post-cancer-video. Brown wrote an op-ed in the New York Times about all of the sh-t that’s gone down and how Will and Kate are dealing with “intense anxiety” behind the scenes because they are not prepared to be king and queen. I get that… but I still believe there’s a tremendous amount of clownery happening. Some highlights:

The Mother’s Day frankenphoto fiasco: After The Associated Press issued a kill notification on the botched photoshopped image of a suspiciously glossy Princess of Wales surrounded by her beaming progeny, there was a typical outburst of tabloid pomposity questioning whether Kensington Palace could ever be considered a trusted source of news. Huh? When was the last time any tabloid considered the palace a trusted source of news? As the editor of Vanity Fair in 1985, I wrote a piece revealing that Prince Charles and Princess Diana were having awful marital fights. The palace roundly denied it, and the royal couple denied it in a television interview, confirming in my mind — correctly, as it turned out — that it was all true.

Turmoil behind the scenes: I am told the turmoil behind the scenes has been intense, resulting in what has felt like a series of baffling press screw-ups. We hear often of Prince Harry’s hatred of the press. If possible, Prince William — while concealing it better — hates the press even more. His bloody-minded determination to stick to his grandmother Queen Elizabeth’s script of “never complain, never explain” is magical thinking in the era of the social media maelstrom, creating a vacuum filled by rumor and deranged conspiracy theories.

Anxiety: The almost simultaneous news of Charles’s cancer has put William and Catherine in frightening proximity to ascending the throne just when they had hoped for a span of years to parent their children out of the public eye. The prospect of it, I am told, is causing them intense anxiety. Help from other family members is scant, aside from the redoubtable Princess Anne, Charles’s sister, and the good-egg Gaiety Girl Queen Camilla. The slimmed-down monarchy that Charles always promoted is suddenly looking very lean indeed. The combination of the Harry and Meghan clown show in Montecito, Calif.; the fusillades from Harry’s memoir, “Spare”; and the disgrace of Prince Andrew — who has little social contact with anyone except his horse — have put William and Catherine under unmanageable pressure.

The weakness of today’s monarchy: It may not be a popular thought, but in many ways I blame the predicament and weakness of the monarchy today on Queen Elizabeth. It’s possible that future generations will see her as the Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the British monarchy. She stayed too long, and by doing so, left behind a legacy that may be the opposite of what she wanted. The time for Elizabeth II to step down was not long after her Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the year I have come to think of as peak London, when Britain dazzlingly hosted the Olympics.

Elizabeth loved being queen: No, Elizabeth II loved the world of politics and power as much as she did breeding horses and tramping the heather of her Balmoral estate. But her 70-year reign has left a pileup of heirs infantilized by too little to do and trapped by a dusty structure that should have been reformed decades ago.

William would have had more to do if he became Prince of Wales in 2012: And William, instead of taking over the Duchy of Cornwall estates in his early 30s and creating a space for the popular Harry to develop a strong portfolio of his own, ended up in a rivalrous relationship with his younger brother that exploded irretrievably when Meghan Markle entered the scene. A less hidebound palace might have come up with a more creative way to solve the Sussex imbroglio.

Frozen: Catherine is battling more — much more — than cancer. A tidal wave of premature responsibility is crashing in her and William’s direction. Frozen, unready and with Catherine now seriously unwell, the Prince and Princess of Wales await the awesome burden of the crown.

[From The NY Times]

Even though she couches a lot of this in “poor Catherine,” she’s actually spilling some interesting tea – William and Kate are frozen and don’t know what to do, there were huge disagreements about how to handle everything behind the scenes and William and Kate have been infantilized to the point where they’re in their 40s and completely unprepared to take over or do anything but scream about their privacy. I think that’s probably close to what’s been happening. Or some of what’s been happening.

  1. Proud Mary says:

Sitting in their separate palaces, “frozen with anxiety.” Lot’s of people are sleeping on the streets, frozen, with or without anxiety.

    • Lia says:

      @proud Mary 💯
      Exactly!
The world would be a better place without them…

      • LRB says:

No that is unkind… not without them, but without them fulfilling this ridiculous role, which they are clearly not capable of nor do they really want it. They wanted Harry… not Meghan… to continue to do the hard graft while they enjoyed being pretty much two full time parents. The lack of visits to the Commonwealth is surely going to become an issue?

    • Feeshalori says:

It’s impossible to feel sorry for anxious people with so much privilege, wealth and entitlement. All of us have anxiety on a daily basis dealing with our own issues without the rest of these perks.

      • StellainNH says:

Exactly. I cannot feel sorry for these two inept grown ups. They have all the privilege yet no ambition or work ethic. The press does their whining about the responsibility of the school run. Well the rest of humanity can deal with school, work and their own households and they don’t have the staff like the wailsies.

      • BeanieBean says:

We also can’t ignore the fact that the late queen had this responsibility dumped on her in her 20s; these two are in their 40s, they should be prepared to handle things by now. That they’re not is on them, not the system.

      • StillDouchesOfCambridge says:

True that the queen stayed too long, but that is not a reason for lazyness when your nature and your job is paid by the people. We all have jobs and kids and anxiety. Stop complaining about daily life – and theirs is with such privilege – it’s a bad spot to do that. Kkkhate’s cancer is unfortunate and we all wish her well. What did she do for all those years prior to the diagnosis? Wtf did william do and still?

This is a good statement showing how lazy, vain and shallow they are to pick fights over image instead of “getting on with the job” like they like to say. Meg knows how lazy they are. She knows.

    • Lau says:

Insane of them to talk about “a tidal wave of premature responsibility”, they are literally over-payed, housed and fed and expect to do nothing in return.

      • Lux says:

The queen became queen in her early 20s. Diana became POW in her early 20s. There is nothing “premature” about these middle-aged people, who should have decades of training, assuming the throne.

  2. sevenblue says:

Weren’t their sources leaking to the media that K&W were following the abdication in Denmark closely and Charles should also step aside for his son. I don’t understand why they would now panic when there is a possibility their wishes will come true. Is this the same story as Camilla never wanted to be Queen? So, they can get away with doing nothing even as a King & Queen.

    • Chloe says:

Not only that, William and his team have frequently let “sources” speak to the press boldly proclaiming that Charles should just step aside. I always maintained that William wants all the glamour that comes with being a King but none of the work. And i also believe that he really thought he could do as minimal as possible and it won’t be questioned. But the last 2 months have shown us that while the press won’t criticize or question william, people on social media will be glad to do so. And things on social media can spread like a wildfire.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

I would also note that the press were criticising Peggy about not doing anything – they did it under the guise of reporting on the ‘conspiracies’ on SM.

      • Becks1 says:

And we know that William and KP are actively looking at social media and are very aware of what criticism takes hold there.

  3. I think the anxiety for Peg is he doesn’t want to do what the job requires and he doesn’t want to be married to Can’t. For Can’t it’s she doesn’t want to be divorced and now she is dealing with preventative chemo which I’m sure she is doing alone and without Peg.

  4. M&gan says:

The Queen dying, Charles being unwell, and then Kate being unwell has been a falling house of cards that William wasn’t prepared for. It’s obvious what William and Kate want – they want to be mum and dad to their kids, all day, every day, and never do much else. ‘The School Run’ was top of William’s priority list for 2024, based on the recent narrative. They are now much closer to the top job than they ever wanted to be, and their kids are still young. Unfortunately, there is a huge trade off in being as wealthy and high status as they are – it doesn’t come for free. Kate’s sister Pippa got the best deal to be honest. She gets to do nothing but be a parent, and yet is still swimming in wealth and status.

    • Tessa says:

William does not like working. The school run is used as an excuse. In the real world parents earn a living and put in many hours of work to support the households and remain great parents.

    • jemmy says:

These are just excuses – They had more than enough ample time to prepare.

Harry is a very good example of being prepared- He was sent on foreign tours in his 20s and learnt how to interact with people of different cultures. Wllnot could have done like wise and use that time to develop solid leadership skills instead of putting down his brother.

if they had the head and the heart & willingness, they can work things around their young family and allow others such has Harry &Meghan to support and do high profile work.

If he was that interested, a good place to start would have been to understudy with QE II and his father . Instead he allowed his arrogance get the better of him and was complicit in stories being written about KC3 to abdicate.

The problem has always been that of greed and arrogance. Willnot wants all the glamour but not the responsibility of doing the donkey work. He had hoped Harry would be the donkey who ideally would remain unmarried or if married, his wife would also be a donkey compliant wife whom he could control.

Same with Cannot- she wants the crown with minimal work

That they both are not ready is down to their sense of entitlement plus Cannot may actually have been the wrong partner for Willnot. Willnot it seems should have married someone who was more enterprising even in view of Willnot;s issues with control.

      • Mairzy Doats says:

Harry does make reference in Spare that his appearances, and those of William’s were controlled by QE II and their father because they didn’t want the monarch and direct heir to be overshadowed. So possibly it’s partially on grandma and dad that W wasn’t allowed to understudy properly. Doesn’t mean that W isn’t lazy as heck, but Harry allows some grace in the book that both he and W found the situation to be somewhat frustrating at times.

      • Tessa says:

The queen renovated Kensington apartments because she thought William. Was ready to work full time instead he demanded that he do air ambulance work .He ended up skipping shifts when he got that work.

    • BeanieBean says:

I think Pippa actually gets paying work from time to time (Hoka ambassador) & seems to be consistent in her charity work (British Heart Foundation). She’s way ahead of her sister.

    • StillDouchesOfCambridge says:

We have to be careful with their wording. Willie Eggplant’s “school run” might mean an actual school run with school moms, remember that one?

  5. Concern Fae says:

Tina Brown was always the best commentator on the split between Diana and Charles. She’s someone who is balancing trying to stay popular with the powerful, which too often distorts what she says. But it does mean that she understands the power plays going on in a way that others don’t.

    • Jais says:

Well, she calls out Queen Elizabeth here and barely says a word against Charles. If I had to guess her sources are with BP or at least she’s not openly criticizing BP, the ones currently in power. Did she sympathize with Charles more during the divorce?

      • Sunday says:

100%. It’s precisely because she was the best commentator on the split between Diana and Charles that the palace would have immediately tried to co-opt and corrupt her. Nothing more effective for controlling a narrative than your biggest critic publicly becoming your biggest fan.

They did the same with Andrew Morton too. The original book may have been Diana’s side, but he released some “updates” that are so obviously Camilla spin I almost vomited on my e-reader. More recently either Jobson or Lacey (one of those ghouls) had a first edition with a fairly accurate read on Will and then boom, updated paperback version or new edition and surprise, surprise his pov switches to completely pro-Will anti-Harry.

      • what's inside says:

Tina Brown has always been a Charles fan. It was even speculated over the decades that she has a thing for him and deliberately styled herself to be appealing to him. Now that things are all circling the drain, she is continuing to try to make herself relevant to the conversation to keep her finances in order.

      • Princessk says:

Tina Brown’s The Diana Chronicles was superb. However since then she has gone downhill. How dare she refer to the Sussexes as a ‘ clown show’. Tina Brown can’t tell us truthfully what she believes because she doesn’t want to lose access to her sources inside the Palace and getting invites to appear on mainstream talk shows as a ‘royal expert’.

      • Jacqueline Thurman says:

Diana took to royal work very well. Meg did also. They worked Meg like a farm horse. 11 common weathetours. Working every week. Flew to New Zealand at 8 month pregnancy!!! Yet Will and Kate wanted her gone. They shot them selves in the foot. Mad Meg was popular but yet not wanting to step up.. William wants Kate gone but he doesn’t want to work. When Charles passes it’s going to be a mess.

    • Tessa says:

Tina Brown is establishment she was and is biased against Diana. There are better biographers like Sarah bradford.

    • Agnes says:

I loved her description of “the good-egg Gaiety Girl Queen Camilla.” And she makes a good point about QE2. The Monarchy will never recover from her death. I wish 1,000x MORE anxiety on Bulliam, he deserves it.

      • jemmy says:

Bulliam will continue to have issues with anxiety until he gets his heart and head in order and does right by the book.

    • Becks1 says:

I can’t decide where I stand on Tina Brown, lol. I feel like for a while there she was pretty anti-Sussex and then over the last few weeks or so she’s been the relative voice of reason, because for the most part, everything she says here has merit, clown show comments aside.

Had the Queen abdicated – whether in 2012 or even 5 years before her death – we wouldn’t have had those messy messy years before her death. William as a younger PoW might not have been a good thing, but at least it would have separated his funding from Harry’s, which might have helped things a bit, I dont know. I think weirdly being PoW at age 30 or whatever would have given William’s ego a big boost, which I think he is constantly looking for – ego boosts (weird since it seems his entire support system is nothing but ego boosts but I digress.)

And she’s right there was a way to “solve” the Sussex “imbroglio,” but it would have involved making changes from the start, not letting the press abuse go on as it did, not being as petty as William and Kate were, etc.

And I do believe that both william and Kate are “frozen and unready.” I think everyone can see that.

And I love how she comes out and says the palace has never been a trusted source.

      • Jais says:

Okay, yes agree on the part about her saying the palace has never been a trusted source. She can keep repeating that part and even louder for the people in the back.

    • Concern Fae says:

Back from my morning walk and realizing that if Tina Brown feels comfortable talking like this about QEII and William, then something has shifted. She didn’t feel able to say these things when her last book came out, but now she can. On Diana, she was one of the first to write about how unhappy Diana was and that it was Charles’s fault.

She is a monarchist and wants to keep being invited back on the BBC, so when she starts pointing out basic truths like this, it’s important.

  6. MerlinsMom1018 says:

She needs to keep RBG’s name outta her filthy piehole.
And naturally several digs at Harry and Meghan because, why not?

I DID enjoy the dig at Andrew. “who has little social contact with anyone except his horse” 😆 That was sharp for sure.
    Poor horse.

    • Chloe says:

I also staunchly disagree that william has maintained the mantra of never complain never explain. He does nothing but complain. He’s just too much of a coward to speak for himself so he will let palace sources do it for him. Or “friends”

    • Jais says:

Yeah TB has to get her dig in at the Sussexes. Clown show in montecito? Ummm, montecito looks pretty blissful from what most people can see while the carnival of clowns seems pretty well relegated to the uk. It’s those types of comments that make TB unserious.

      • TeamMontecito says:

So, I study conflict and cultural heritage, but am not a published academic. The use of “clown” or “clown shows” to describe what is viewed as “common” behavior, clothing or make-up of, say, a woman, for example, has very well-documented origins to racism from around the time of the emancipation of Black people after the US Civil War. Clowns were in fact the first documented derogatory depictions of Black people, and their public acceptance later led to blackface and minstrel. Admittedly, not everyone finds terms like “clown show” (or “clown”) derogatory. However, in some parts of the US, they are very much viewed as racist political dog whistles. I’m brown, and if someone referred to me or the life I have built for myself as a “clown show,” I would immediately smell classist if not racist undertones. Again, as with my baking, results may vary depending on the messenger, recipient and context. But it’s not a benign insult, and I’m fairly certain Tina Brown is intelligent enough to know this.

      • Jais says:

Ooh thank you for that insight. Yeah that is not a benign comment from TB.

    • Kristen from MA says:

Thank you! (6-3 or 5-4, they were still going to gut Roe, the f#ckers.)

    • Cessily says:

Couldn’t agree more.. the RBG reference made me livid.

    • Princessk says:

      @merlinsmom. Who is RBG???

      • Amy T says:

@Princess K – Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a Supreme Court Justice appointed by Bill Clinton. As she got older and dealt with multiple rounds of cancer and things were looking like maybe it would be a good, strategic move for her to retire while there was a Democrat in the White House, she chose (as was her right) to stay. She was a powerhouse, both legally and physically (4’10” and doing pushups into her ‘80s), but when she died in 2020, Donald Trump (may all his teeth fall out except the one with the toothache) and Mitch McConnell (may he grow like an onion, with his head in the ground and his feet in the air) rushed Amy Coney Barrett onto the Court in her place.
        https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruth_Bader_Ginsburg

      • Princessk says:

        Thank you.
What did Tina Brown say about her?

  7. aquarius64 says:

William was eligible to become monarch when he turned 18 so he had almost 24 years to prepare. The fact that he is not named regent now drives home the fact he is not ready for prime time. Other European monarchies have their throne heirs ready to take on the role of regent when needed. Crown Prince Christian of Denmark, 18, had to act as regent when Fred X had to leave the country. Kate has been a queen consort in waiting going on 13 years and all she has done in significance is produce an heir and two spares. She has done nothing to show she would have power to run BP with Will and the courtiers will not stand for Carole , Gary or the rest of the Middletons thinking they can come in and plop themselves on the throne.

    • Lucy says:

Will hasn’t been named regent because he’s not ready, but also Charles would never. He waited 70? Years to be King and has only had the job 2.5 years. He’s not going to hand anything over unless he gets incapacitated somehow. I don’t like Brown, but she has a really good point about how differently all the dynamics could’ve been if QE had retired in 2012.

      • Liz says:

I agree Lucy though QEII would never have stepped down. She was very much about the record books and wanted to outlast Victoria’s reign.

      • CatMum says:

my theory is that the reason she didn’t step down isn’t just that she promised not to (in a speech clip that everyone has heard over and over) but also that she knew that Charles and William were not up to the job. Anne would have been so much better at it. I think she knew that, and didn’t want to stick around to see her life’s work fall apart.

      • Jes says:

What does a “regenr” do day to day.. just more events?

    • Margaret says:

@CatMum Elizabeth could have stepped down and still kept her vow to serve. All it would have taken was her saying something like, “When I was 21 I declared that I would devote my whole life to your service. 60 years have passed since then and I have honoured my pledge as well as I could but circumstances have changed and I believe I can best serve you now by stepping down and handing the reins to The Prince of Wales who has worked steadily in that roll for many years and is well prepared to serve you now as your monarch.”

      • Liz says:

Was never going to happen Margaret. QEII was all about the record books and was determined her reign would outlast Victoria’s.

  8. s808 says:

“William and Kate are frozen and don’t know what to do, there were huge disagreements about how to handle everything behind the scenes and William and Kate have been infantilized to the point where they’re in their 40s and completely unprepared to take over or do anything but scream about their privacy.”

The most realistic summary of all this imo. If they’d hire competent advisors and actually listened to them, a lot of this wouldn’t be happening but alas.

I don’t think W needed the POW title to work. I believe H who said Charles would limit them work wise to not pull focus but that doesn’t mean they can’t do ANYTHING. That was a choice THEY made and keep making.

  9. Kokiri says:

If only they knew these days were coming!
That’ they’d be expected to take over & run the show. They could have prepared, done he work, learned their roles.
I can imagine how disconcerting it was for willy to realize, that after his father died he’d be King Willy!

These are grown people who full well knew what was coming. Any anxiety 😥 a because they won’t be able to say no so often, willy will have to actually “work”

  10. Amy Bee says:

I agree with Kaiser’s take on the situation. I’ll add that I think Harry was always going leave the Royal Family. I think he would have left after the Queen died because he knew his life would be even worse under Charles and William’s reigns.

  11. k says:

Keep RBG’s name out your mouth.

    • StarWonderful says:

These Royal commentators and media minions always have to put someone down to prop up their principal. Keep RBG outta your mouth, Tina Brown-nose! What is wrong with the Monarchy is that it’s a relic that should be put away forever.

  12. Tessa says:

There are people with real problems. Like families who barely have enough money to provide for their children . Or can’t afford huge medical bills

    • DeltaJuliet says:

For sure. I don’t begrudge Kate being ill but my god, not only do spouses of cancer patients usually need to work to provide for their families, oftentimes the patients themselves continue to work *actual jobs*, not ribbon cuttings and fundraisers. I’m having a hard time mustering up much sympathy.

  13. Hyacinth Bucket says:

I believe Kate’s video was all Buckingham Palace’s PR people. The Mothering Day photo was such a disastrous failure by Kensington Palace PR that it became a threat to the top echelon of the monarchy. Their press was spectacularly bad. So Charles’ people stepped in and made Kate do the video. It follows the same script that Charles used for the announcement for his cancer (albeit sans video). It has the same effect, too. Sympathy for Kate and her family and the rumors quenched, yet not quite stopped.

I actually applaud the move. First of all, she deserves to concentrate on her health (like everybody should be allowed to do). Secondly, high profile cases lead to awareness, more people get themselves tested, it saves lives.

Everything else going on in her life, is fair game, once she’s well again.

  14. Brassy Rebel says:

The queen is certainly responsible in part for this mess. But I don’t think William would have suddenly ceased being lazy had he become POW in 2012. Everyone should just face it; laziness is William’s brand, yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

    • Ciotog says:

Yeah—they’ve been infantilized for sure, but also they’re infants. 1000 years of “preparation” wouldn’t have made a difference.

      • Elizabeth says:

In the 8 years Kate spent waiting for that golden ring, she did nothing to prepare for her role. She could have gotten a degree in early childhood or worked for a charitable organization. Instead, she had one job working for Jigsaw, which she quit after 8 months, and then she ‘worked’ for PartyPieces. Is it any wonder that she did virtually nothing for years once she married William? I forget the timeline, but didn’t the whole ‘Early Years’ thing come about after Meghan married Harry?

    • jemmy says:

Harry was under the same regime yet he managed to go on foreign tours to represent QEII and started the hugely successful Invictus Games . As Harry saiid in Spare- instead of Willy concentrating on discovering & developing his passions, he was in a one sided rivalry competition with his brother.

It seems his sense of entitlement did not allow room for him to be humble enough to learn and effectively understudy his father or even the late Queen or if he did, he failed to realise the changing landscape of the modern times we live in, thinking the golden years of the Queen will go on forever.

      • Moondust says:

@elizabeth if I remember correctly Meghan launched the cookbook for and with the Grenfell victims. And then they came up with Kate and early years although at that time it had a different name.

  15. Jais says:

Gaeity Girl Queen Camilla? Is that the equivalent of Gary’s laughing girl?

  16. MoBiMom says:

As I recall, the kind of preparation Tina describes is precisely what Christopher Geidt (sp?) was working on when he was unceremoniously booted by Charles and his courtiers (with an assist from Andrew) in favor someone more easily controlled. I don’t quite see how this aligns with “it’s all because the queen didn’t abdicate”. It seems to me that Tina’s memory is rather selective here. Also, I still don’t understand her apparent hatred of the Sussexes.

    • Tessa says:

Tina is a royalist at heart. She is playing up to them. She is biased against Diana harry and Meghan
She may want some honors from Charles and or william

  17. TigerMcQueen says:

“Catherine is battling more — much more — than cancer. A tidal wave of premature responsibility is crashing in her and William’s direction. Frozen, unready and with Catherine now seriously unwell, the Prince and Princess of Wales await the awesome burden of the crown.”

Seems like she’s hinting at something about Kate beyond the “oh noes, more responsibilities!” I mean, what extra responsibility would Kate have as queen? All Camilla does is faff around wearing clothes, visiting places, and waving a few times a month.

    • Liz says:

Exactly Tiger. There are people dealing with more responsibilities every day and without an army of staff too.

    • Alice says:

I think the unspoken truth here is that the spouse manages the monarch. Elizabeth propped up and managed Bertie.

Philip was something between Tom Hagan and Luca Brasi for Elizabeth. It’s very anti feminist of me but I think the wheels came off the bus when Philip retired.

Camilla is expected to fill both Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Philip’s role. She props up Charles but she’s also the hatchet.

I guarantee no one thinks Catherine can pull of any of these needed roles.

      • TigerMcQueen says:

True. And I think it’s become clear in recent weeks that even if Kate isn’t acting as an in-person moderator for Will the same way other royal spouses have (it’s not like they really spend much time together in private), her presence in public absolutely acts as a shield for his behavior. I mean, everyone is too busy looking at what she’s wearing to notice Will’s an ill-prepared twit with the emotional maturity of earwax.

But she’s already doing that job, in her own way, so why would becoming queen change it? Unless she’s staring at a future acting as a meat shield for Will with no way out once she’s queen and realizing maybe the crown isn’t all that.

      • Tessa says:

Kate enables Williams bad behavior and even teamed up with William in their bad treatment of meghan.

    • BeanieBean says:

Well, Camilla apparently suggests reading for 5 minutes a day; c’mon Kate, you can do it! I know you can!

  18. Sunday says:

I find pieces like this to be particularly insidious. Unlike some royal reporters who can’t help but let out an appalling screed of racist bile everytime they talk about the Sussexes, Tina Brown couches her palace sycophancy in feigned pragmatism so that she sounds more reasonable… and therefore her little digs of “Montecito clown show” are way more effective than Bower foaming at the mouth or Valentine Low’s latest unhinged racism.

I’m not sure if that phrase would’ve risen to the level of omittance if the New York Times still had a public editor, but sending a special f*ck you to them anyway.

    • BeanieBean says:

Gotta say, Brown is a much better writer than any of these other sycophantic rota rats & their ilk.

    • StarWonderful says:

So, what would a non-clown show in Montecito look like, Tina?

      • Princessk says:

That was a ridiculously snide comment from Tina Brown to curry favour with her sources.

    • Vader says:

I agree, tina is much worse. The other tabloids writers are so ridiculously over the top, it’s easily spotted by many people and it appeals to low brow racists. Tina on the other hand lends a veneer of respectability (undeservedly) that can fool more moderate people.

She was spouting a lot of H&M hate in her last book and the interviews she did to promote her book were downright nasty.

  19. what's inside says:

From my chair, Kate has never had any aspirations other than to be William’s wife and mother to his children. She has absolutely no ambition, waits for him to lead the way and caters to his every wish. She is ride or die for William. Unfortunately, William cannot lead the way to anything. His ambition is to do what he wants, when he wants, and have enough where with all to afford it.

Charles wants a slimmed down monarchy? Well he got his wish. Charles may be a nice man according to Diana and deeply loved by his sons, but really his legacy is going to look bad in hindsight.

    • Tessa says:

Kate did say in the engagement interview she would work hard. She didn’t. If she wanted to be a stay at home mom she could have married a wealthy man. Future kings wives were and are expected to work . Diana was complimentary to Charles at first but did not consider him nice after things fell apart. Diana excelled at work

      • what's inside says:

Diana without a doubt was an excellent team partner for Charles. She understood what was expected workwise, just did not really understand Charles’ agenda until it was too late. Kate has been working hard, just not what is expected of her by the public. She married a wealthy man, has all of the toys, and thinks that refusing to get with the program will work out because that is what William does.

      • Tessa says:

I think Diana became aware of charles agenda early on and there was nothing she could do to prevent it. Charles was the one with the issue of jealousy of his own wife and his sense of entitlement. And he was not amenable to change.

    • StarWonderful says:

Diana said Charles was a nice man? Perhaps she was being sarcastic?

  20. Just Jade says:

    Self inflicted.

  21. Eurydice says:

There’s a lot here that makes sense, but it’s all coulda, shoulda, woulda. Elizabeth could have stepped down earlier, but it wasn’t her responsibility to make sure William was up to speed, that was on Charles.

And that responsibility still rests with Charles, despite his cancer. William shouldn’t be looking to Ann or Camilla for advice – neither of them have trained to be king. William and Charles should be talking and planning, BP and KP should be coordinating and William should be deferring to his king instead of doing whatever he wants. This is the direct line of succession – William should be learning all of this so he can pass it on to George later.

    • Jes says:

What does the king do that is so different from anne? Its like a few diff outfits right? Im serious

  22. B says:

It’s Anne’s fault that Charles took the Sussex home. Its China’s fault that people were calling out KP’s lies. Everything is always someone elses fault. Now it’s dead Betty’s fault that Charles in his 70s and William in his 40s aren’t as competent as Betty was in her 90s. They are going to tank that monarchy and blame it on everyone else but themselves.

  23. SisterSister says:

Bown can miss me with this BS. I will safely say that she has no current palace insider contacts, only royal gosipping contacts. That was painfully obvious in her lastest royal book, wherein say dished a lot of nonsence about H&M. She’s been a Camilla and a W&K campagner, and a H&M hater for forever. She takes every opportunity to denagrade H&M and to make excuses for C/W&K.

    • Angied says:

Tina has no insider contact. She’s a has-been who can’t even sell her book. Well maybe in the 80’s but those days are gone. The young people would now say who dat? She wished she was inside Harry and Meghan inner circle. They are the true insiders. The real clown show is at KP those fakers siding with the clown show tabloid press. What she says in the UK she would never say on an American talk show. She was on CBS Morning show last week saying how mismanaged KP was. They are all jealous of Harry and Meghan who run a tight ship and won’t let gossipers like Tina anywhere near them.

  24. Emily says:

    “good-egg Gaiety Girl Queen Camilla”

I don’t understand how this ever made print.

    • QuiteContrary says:

Me neither. Camilla is not now, and never was, a good egg — the only good eggs are the ones sailing in her direction at public events.

And the Montecito clown show? Eff you, Tina.

      • clipper says:

She was a good egg once. Used to visit my folks in the 60’s. Gave me a whole bunch of hand-me-down clothes that belonged to her husband (?) from his army days.
She may well have turned nasty over the years but was funny and kind then.

    • Lady D says:

I don’t either, but I love it. Why do I get a horse impression when reading it, though? It must be the gaiety/gait and Camilla’s name together that does it for me.

    • Eurydice says:

It’s a weird reference. Gaiety Girls were chorus girls in Edwardian theater. On the one hand, they played the part of the perfectly demure and proper English rose. On the other, they looked to advance themselves by marrying wealthy fans – “Stage Door Johnnies.”

It seems to me that Brown is being sarcastic here – that “good egg Camilla” is an act she used to snare Charles.

      • BeanieBean says:

Thank you from explaining the term, saved me from googling. It’s quite a snide remark, isn’t it?

      • CatMum says:

        thanks for explaining that, Eurydice!

I didn’t catch the reference, but the shade came through loud and clear. (and it fits with Cam’s recent appearances where she looks like the cat that got the cream!)

  25. yupyup says:

To be honest I agree with all of this 100%. Especially that QE2 is to blame.

    • sparrow says:

Said same below, yupyup – a really good point about the queen not having the foresight to abdicate and let the monarchy go forwards in younger hands. They are like tweens – look at Andrew and his teddy bears ffs. I can indeed imagine William is terrified at the prospect of becoming king sooner than he expected. His weight loss over the last few weeks made me feel he was about to scream “I’ve had enough, we’re off!”. He’d have to take his kids out of the succession, of course, but I believe their removal would bother only Kate. I’d welcome King Edward out of the rest of them.

  26. SarahCS says:

I know this is not the only place those terms are used but really? ‘Infantilised’, ‘clown show’? Hi Tina!

  27. Is that so? says:

“Harry and Meghan clown show in Montecito, Calif.”

Clown show or not, they started from scratch and it is better run and more successful than anything we Cambridge have going!

  28. Mrs. Smith says:

Haha — TB using the phrase “clown show” is, um, very specific. It sounds like she’s been lurking around Kaiser’s coverage and comments sections.

  29. Rnot says:

Uhh, Gaiety Girl? One of these? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaiety_Girls

I’m not sure exactly which nuance she was aiming for there, but none of them are complimentary.

  30. Another lurker says:

FYI Tina totally got dragged in the reader comments. The Times seems to finally be allowing posts by critical thinkers and has tamped down on the Wales bots when it comes to British Royals articles.

  31. equality says:

Yesterday, Edward was the last man standing and saving the monarchy. Today he and Sophie can’t get a mention.

  32. Mary Pester says:

Listen Tina you nasty little apologist for Charlie. The only bloody clown show is in the UK. Why else would others be saying Harry MUST come back to save his brother, and Harry is like “nah, he’s on his own and he can deal.
This woman is admitting that Billy and bone aren’t up to the job, go look at how old the Queen’s children were, and she was doing commonwealth tours!, remember Charlie’s s words, far worse than anything Harry said, Charlie said his father was harsh and hectoring and his mother was cold and emotionally distant
Billy and bone want the throne, they want the adoration, they want the titles and they want the school run to last until George is in his teens so they can push him out to work. Bone won’t be around then, but she will forever be loitering in the wings, basking in George’s popularity, the only ones I feel sorry for are the children, christ knows what a warped view of love and marriage they will have

    • Liz says:

Good point Mary. Charles dissed his parents publicly in the Dimbleby book and accused his father of bullying him into marrying Diana. Any other guy would have jumped at the chance.

His fake umbrage at Harry is because he’s weak and a hypocrite.

  33. Feebee says:

The fact that W&K are frozen with anxiety is nothing but a failure of King Charles and the Firm itself.

Where is all the protocol BS they beat H&M with? William literally has one job, one f**king job and that is preparing and learning how to be King. Obviously this entails doing other jobs and learning skills but he seems incapable of it and apparently no one can force him to do it?

Utter systemic failure. That’s the clown show right there. So Tina can FO with that nonsense. Nothing coming out of California says clown show. They appear to be the only ones managing their business professionally and competently in 21st century conditions.

  34. sparrow says:

Very good point about Elizabeth staying too long and not letting her children grow into and take forwards the BRF.

    • AC says:

This ⬆️. The consequences because of it has been a complete circus.

    • Unblinkered says:

I’m convinced the trouble really began when The Queen’s (QE2) super tough private secretary Sir Christopher Geidt was ousted 2017. Unfortunately, it coincided with a very weak British Prime Minister.
It’s probable that Charles became de facto Regent 2017 and that’s the point at which W&K should have started work, but didn’t. Meghan was on the scene although early days, and, with hindsight, all kinds of things were allowed to spiral out of control at whirlwind speed.
And now, with the cancer video, KM’s untouchable and William has been shafted. Wishing her a speedy recovery, and also for the UK Prime Minister to straighten out the aituation

      • Rnot says:

There will be a Labor PM sometime within the next 12 months. That person may not be as willing as Tony Blair was to handhold the RF through a crisis. Particularly if said crisis happens to coincide with an unpopular monarch, soured public mood, and a dire budget situation.

    • Tessa says:

The trouble is that Charles just let William do as he pleases. He even let William drive out harry.

  35. Square2 says:

    To Ms. Brown:

    1. Justice RBG was/is 1000 times better human being than QEII.

    2. Even if Willy Idle was named the POW in 2012, he was and always will be the lazy, angry, immature person that he is today. Maybe even worst if he got all the money so early on.

    3. English is not my first language. I don’t know some big words you used in the article and I would never write as eloquent as you. But I do know I am a better person than you, cause you are a snobby racist.

  36. Kingston says:

I think I have the measure of every british hack who contributes to the cesspit known as the british media.

In particular, oldsters like tinabrown, robert lacey, clive irving, etc are among those who typify a way of thinking by old brits of a particular mindset – a mindset thats stuck in the days of ‘Rule Britannia!’

So heres how that works: because britain has lost so much prestige on the world stage, vis-a-vis the height of their sense of superiority which defined and were defined by the days of ‘Rule Britannia,’ (circa 18th-20th Century) the magnitude of today’s sense of loss means that even the tiniest prick to their overblown ego, throws them into a frenzied tizzy and makes them lash out at the real or imagined enemy who exposes their ever-present sense of inferiority.

In walks Meghan into this maelstrom of british identity crisis. First of all, thru marriage to their most beloved Prince, she enters the pinnacle of their highly stratified society; but she is unimpressed by it and also rejects the contract she’s being offered, which is, to accept their abuse for the “privilege” of being allowed into their hallowed stratum.

She leaves. Which was expected, of course. As H said, “They knew my wife would leave, because of the way they were abusing her.”

But, horror of horrors! The Crown Jewel – their beloved Prince – also walked away and left with her!!! And the whole world has been seeing the subsequent, unending denouement.
