Tom Hiddleton will star in a two-season revival of ‘The Night Manager’ for Prime

2013-2016 was such a heady time for the internet’s dual crushes on Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston. It was a simpler time, and to be fair, both Bendy and Tom gave us so much material. The other day, I was thinking back to the JArthy hysteria and giggling to myself. Remember Bendy’s California photoshoot with the Hunterbatch?? LMAO. Good times all around.

Anyway, during Tom’s pre-Tiddles era – like, this happened just a few months before he met Taylor Swift in 2016 – he appeared in AMC’s The Night Manager, a limited series based on a John le Carre novel of the same name. I watched the series and loved it – it was well done, smart, with great performances by Tom, Hugh Laurie, Elizabeth Debicki, Olivia Colman and Tom Hollander. Hugh Laurie was especially good, in my opinion, but Tom was the lead and he ended up winning a Golden Globe and he was nominated for an Emmy. The show was so well-received, there was a lot of talk (in real time) that the show should be expanded and made into a regular series. Everyone involved said they would love that… and then nothing happened. For years, the idea of a “second season” just withered away. But no more! We’re getting two new seasons of The Night Manager, with Tom attached as star and producer. Hugh Laurie will also be stepping in as an executive producer.

One year ago we told you that a second season of John le Carré adaptation The Night Manager was quietly being developed under the codename Steelworks. Now, Deadline can reveal that the BBC and new co-pro partner Amazon have gone big on a supercharged two-season order of the thriller, with Tom Hiddleston returning to lead, Hugh Laurie coming back as EP and with a new director in I Hate Suzie’s Georgi Banks-Davies. A third season has also been greenlit. David Farr is series creator and Stephen Garrett is leading the production.

The Night Manager Season 2 will begin filming later this year and will pick up with Hiddleston’s Jonathan Pine eight years after the explosive finale of Season 1, going beyond the original book, which was written by the celebrated British writer in 1993. Additional plot details are being kept under wraps and there is not yet confirmation as to whether EP Laurie’s Richard Roper, who was last seen in the back of a paddy wagon driven by arms buyers who were not best pleased with him, will return to star. Hiddleston will also EP and will discuss in more depth on tonight’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Simon Cornwell and Stephen Cornwell, le Carré’s sons who run The Ink Factory, said Season 1 proved “a landmark moment for the golden era of television – uniting on-screen and behind-the-camera talent at the top of their game – and an audience reception which was beyond our wildest imagining.” They added: “Revisiting the story of Pine also means going beyond the events of John le Carré’s original work: that is a decision we have not taken lightly, but his compelling characters and the vision David has for their next chapter were irresistible.”

[From Deadline]

In case you’re having a case of deja vu, in February 2023, there was industry chatter that something like this was in development. It took them more than a year to pull it together, and by the time “Season 2” airs, it will be nine years after the original series aired. I appreciate that they’re building that timeline into the story though – it’s not like the story will pick up a month after the events in the first season. I’m curious what Tom and Hugh will bring as executive producers, trying to extend John le Carre’s vision for these characters.

Well that’s good news 🙂 It was a great series, well written, well acted, well directed. A good, solid, entertaining but also smart show. Looking forward to it!

We were, with a little help from a friend and lots of good luck, at the world premiere of TNM at the Berlin Film Festival.

They screened the first two episodes, and everyone was there, including JLC, who told the story of him working as a spy at the British embassy in Berlin and the consulate in Hamburg in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Good times.

Tom, of course, was his usual funny, exuberant self.

I am so looking forward to this, and am quite sure that they have great scripts, otherwise they wouldn’t have done it after all these years.

Good for Tom! He’s so talented and deserves more opportunities.

This has pretty much been in development since the original aired, with the family very much involved. They took their time with this. Hoping Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies, and Elizabeth Debicki return too.

Hurrah! I loved this when it came out and I’m totally on board with getting more. Need to check if I can re-watch the first season somewhere. The cast, writing, all of it were top notch.

  6. Lau says:

I’ll never forgive the fact that they gave him the Golden Globe with Riz Ahmed for The Night Of in the same category. It’s unforgivable.

The Night Of was fantastic. Riz Ahmed is such an emotionally giving actor, it was just captivating. TNM was also great! It’s always a shame when brilliant shows have to go against each other and some years there it is a choice between bad or worse. Looking forward to these new seasons so! Great cast, I’m interested to see where they go with it.

I’m kind of excited about this!
The first season was really good- and I’m glad that Prime is starting to find their stride programming wise.
TNM, The Boys, Invincible, Fallout (with Walter Goggins), Outer Range, Them, etc. They’ve finally got their s#!t together.

    Took them long enough lol

  8. Flamingo says:

Any chance he can fit in another season of Loki lol.

  9. Sass says:

Oh this is great news! My body is ready 🤣

  10. Lilly (with the double-L) says:

I loved it too. So well-acted and suspenseful. But, I don’t watch Amazon, well, Prime anymore. I hate ads and the shipping has deteriorated and what you need to spend for the quickest. Also, they’re so blasé when you order big things, sending them with dents, tears, etc., because they know it’s a hassle to return. Which, to be fair is also Wayfair. So, I probably won’t watch and I’m not going to pay more for no ads. There are other streaming services I already pay for and can watch things I like, but I stopped a few of those too. Then I have reverted to cable since it’s also where most shows are and I have it and commercials have always been a given, not a bait and switch.

Bring back Susanne Bier to direct and I’m in like Flynn!

He’s never taken a bad picture. The camera loves him. He looks really tall, too. Does anyone know his height?

  14. Jim Brown says:

It’s great to see Tom Hiddleston is to star in another season based on John le Carré’s Night Manager. John le Carré’s novels are perfection yet in real life whilst David Cornwell was a great character and a brilliant writer, as a spy did he have more Achilles heels than toes? Did he really upset Field Marshall Montgomery’s cousin? Were Pemberton’s People in MI6 as depicted in The Burlington Files really friends or foes? Was he the perfect spy? What of his Dad’s links to the Krays? What were his links to Kim Philby? Did the SAS trust him? For more beguiling anecdotes best read a brief and intriguing News Article about Pemberton’s People in MI6 dated 31 October 2022 in TheBurlingtonFiles website and then read Beyond Enkription.
