Princess Amalia lived in Madrid when it wasn’t safe for her in The Netherlands

The Netherlands’ crown princess (or heiress to the Dutch throne) is Princess Catharina-Amalia, who generally goes by Amalia. In 2021, Amalia announced that she was turning down her royal “allowance” from the country when she turned 18 years old. She wanted to be able to travel and study without feeling like she was already on the clock as a working royal. She had a gap year and then enrolled in the University of Amsterdam in 2022. She only lasted a couple of months in Amsterdam before she had to withdraw because there was such a huge security threat against her. She was reportedly devastated, as were her parents. Since then, we didn’t hear much about where she was and what she was doing. That is, until the Spanish king and queen visited the Netherlands last month. Suddenly, Amalia popped up. King Willem-Alexander even said in a speech that Amalia had been living in Madrid for much of the past two years? Now Amalia is confirming that:

Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands is “grateful” to have found refuge in Spain after security threats prevented her from continuing to live in student housing in Amsterdam. It was recently revealed that the future queen, 20, lived in Madrid due to threats made in the fall of 2022 while she was starting as a student at the University of Amsterdam. According to the BBC, organized crime communications indicated she may become a target of kidnapping or an attack, initially prompting her to move home and only leave for class.

Princess Amalia stepped out for King’s Day celebrations, marking King Willem-Alexander’s birthday, in the Dutch city of Emmen with her parents and two younger sisters on April 27, speaking for the first time about secretly living abroad due to the scary situation.

“Of course, it was strange circumstances that made me go there,” she told Dutch media outlets, according to Bild. “I’m still very grateful to everyone who made it possible for me to walk around there in freedom. I managed to find a little more freedom there than was possible here. The Netherlands is my home, so it’s nice to be here again,” she said, adding that spending time in Spain “made life here somewhat possible again.”

King Willem-Alexander said it was “terrible” that his eldest daughter and heir wasn’t able to “spread her wings,” adding, “Luckily, it worked out in Madrid.”

The revelation of Princess Amalia’s time abroad came earlier this month as the Dutch royal family hosted King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain for a state visit. During his speech at the state banquet, King Willem-Alexander, 57, thanked those involved for making his daughter’s stay possible.

“Last year, circumstances required her to live in Madrid. From there, she was able to continue her studies at the University of Amsterdam. This was made possible by the kind efforts of many of your compatriots and yourselves,” the Dutch monarch said in his speech, delivered in English. “A touching demonstration of friendship at a difficult time. I’d like to express my heartfelt thanks to you and to everyone else who helped arrange this.”

I’m not going to pretend to understand how college transfers work across EU borders, but I’m happy that Amalia got to live abroad safely and have some kind of semblance of a normal college life for a year or two. Is she back in The Netherlands full time or is she still living in Madrid? Are there still threats against her in her home country? I wonder what kind of arrangements were made and how – is it government to government? Did King Felipe have to give his blessing for a Dutch princess to come and stay in Spain? Felipe seems to have a soft spot for the young royals of Europe, he might even become something like the elder statesman-king to like two generations of European royals.

So she didn’t want to take money from her country while she wasn’t fully working and was going to university/travel to have experiences that will help her become her person and people were pissed? Have they looked at the BRF? I feel awful for her and hope she is okay now.

    • GoodWitchGlenda says:

I wouldnt assume the threats were because people were mad at her. It could have just been she was an easier target for kidnapping/ransom living in student housing.

    • jane says:

the article said it was organized crime communications. it wasn’t the public or media that were mad. don’t think organized crime rings care if she decided to not take money from her country.

      • OldCheese says:

She was threatened by members of the Mocro Maffia. They went absolutely crazy during a big trial of a lot of their members. Also killing the most famous crime reporter in the Netherlands. If they were after her, she had every right to be scared.

    • Bumblebee says:

Dangerous people. Killing reporters and going after innocent teenagers. Hope they were convicted and went to jail.

    • Princessk says:

But how did she manage to do her Amsterdam course from Madrid?

      • Hmm says:

During the pandemic lockdowns, a lot (most in the US) of universities went online. Many have still kept up that ability and host hybrid classes.

  2. Concern Fae says:

The article said she was still taking classes at The University of Amsterdam, presumably remotely. My guess is she was either living in an apartment with the palace complex, or in a high security building somewhere in the city.

What a seemingly lovely family. I hope that they can find some way to keep her safe while she is getting her education. King Felipe really is everything you want in a king (if we believe in royal life.) He’s dignified, steady and handsome to boot.

    • Chloe says:

Every single time i see someone praise king Felipe, I am reminded that he made a speech stating that the Spanish colonization of what is now Middle and South America l was a goof thing because “it brought prosperity”

      • Beverley says:

ITA, @Chloe. The European narrative has always been about slavery and colonialism were wonderful because it brought prosperity/civilization/culture to those enslaved and colonized Black and Brown people. (As though they had no culture or self-governance before their white “betters” arrived and destroyed their lives.)

        Same old tune, different crooner.
        Colonizers gotta colonize.🤷🏾‍♀️

My guess is that Spain helped with security. European Universities have a program called Erasmus where students can easily move to another European university which will give them credits accepted home. I think it varies from 3 months to 1 university year. You don’t even have to speak the language. It’s a throw the kid in the lake kind of immersion and it does wonders for acquiring new language skills, getting out of your shell at an awkward age away from your social circle back home and their judgments, new friends or partners for life. It’s a great program and it benefits a lot of young people.
Although in the princesse’s case, I don’t know it was something like this, she mentions studying remotely. Maybe she did a combination to make sure she stays on top of the material. One thing this program is not known for is helping academically much..

Very cute movie of my generation – is showing this very well: it’s called l’auberge espagnol

She is really gorgeous. I love the blue cape with the tiara. Although, I just now noticed the huge necklace under the cape which kind of throws it off. Would’ve just skipped the necklace with the cape neckline but it still overall looks really good.

    She is Disney-princess pretty.

Maxima is my favorite of the European royals. She’s so entertaining. At first, I thought she had a whole dang tree branch on her head but it’s a giant cluster of green butterflies. Delightful.
