SAG Awards: winners, losers & funny moments

16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Show

The Screen Actors Guild Awards were held last night in Los Angeles, and unlike the Golden Globes, they actually got some nice weather. That was pretty much the only difference, as most of the awards ended up going to the same people. Personally, the SAGs are one of my favorite awards shows just because it’s only about the actors, and because it seems more low-key and friendly than the Golden Globes or Oscars. Last night’s ceremony had some good laughs, good speeches and a few touching moments, so here we go. First, an annotated list of winners:

*Comedy Actor, TV: Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock. For the first award of the night, Bladwin was charming and said he was especially grateful to be getting the award from a giggly Kate Hudson (and to a lesser extent, Justin Timberlake). Sidenote: I think Jessica Biel should definitely keep her eye on JT and Hudson, because they seemed very, very friendly. Too friendly. Anyway, Baldwin talked about how great the Guild was and gave a shout-out to all of the actors who barely scrape by.

*Comedy Actress, TV: Tina Fey, 30 Rock. The dress was so much better than that crap she wore at the Globes. She was cute, but her speech wasn’t memorable.

*Comedy Ensemble: Glee. It was nice seeing all of those young actors, and it was nice that a new show got the ensemble honor. I also liked that Jane Lynch was the one to speak. I love her, she’s so amazing!

*Supporting Actor, Film: Chistoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds. Waltz’s sweep of nearly every major and critic’s award continues, and it’s well-deserved. He was wonderful in Basterds, but he needs to work on his speeches. He comes across as a bit too earnest, I’d like to see him be more spontaneous. But still, he seems like a lovely man.

*Drama Actress, TV: Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife. I don’t watch that show, and I’ve always been “meh” about her, but I liked that she gave a shout-out to her stellar work in Snakes on a Plane!

*Drama Actor, TV: Michael C. Hall, Dexter. I love him, I think his peers love him, I think he’s got a lot of love from the audience and from the public in general. I also think he’s sweeping the awards because people want him to get better. I love that he thanked his wife (and Dexter costar) Jennifer Carpenter for “wearing that dress”. They’re so cute together.

*Drama, Ensemble: Mad Men. Totally deserved, some of the best writing and acting on television. And f-ck me, Jon Hamm rocks my world. That man is so fine, he sets panties on fire. Oh, and John Slattery was rocking a beautiful little silver beard too! And Elizabeth Moss looked cute in her little black cocktail dress. Is Moss pregnant?

16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Show

*Actress in a TV Movie: Drew Barrymore, Grey Gardens. Ugh, another spastic Drew speech. She says she was feeling sick to her stomach. She looks like she’s still in character too. As does Jessica Lange. What is going on with these ladies?

*Actor in a TV Movie: Kevin Bacon, Taking Chance. I love the Bacon, and I love this story. I think the Bacon was very moved he won, and his wife Kyra Sedgwick was really, really emotional. I love them, and I love that they still come out and show up for other year after year. They’re such a great couple!

*Supporting Actress, Film: Mo’Nique, Precious. When presenter Morgan Freeman called her name, she kissed a bunch of people from Precious, and then Mo’Nique stopped by the Basterds’ table and laid a big kiss on Christoph Waltz. When she got up to the podium, Morgan Freeman wouldn’t give her the award until she kissed him too, which was very sweet, I thought. Her speech was lovely, and she once again thanked director Lee Daniels profusely, but she didn’t thank Gabourey Sidibe!

*Lead Actor, Film: Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart. Meryl presented to him, which was nice. Jeff has so much love in the industry, he got another standing ovation from the audience, just like at the Globes. But where he thanked his wife first at the Globes, he saved her for last this time – she looked so proud of him too! They’ve been together for like 30 years. So amazing!

16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Show

*Lead Actress, Film: Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side. Sandra was lovely, but am I the only one who notices that every time she wins, she neglects to thank the actual woman she’s playing, Leigh Anne Tuohy? I don’t think Bullock liked the actual woman that much, maybe? Anyway, Sandy thanked her husband profusely, saying: “You get dressed up in monkey suits and you sit at a table with people you don’t know. And I leave you there, and then you come back with, like, Morgan Freeman’s e-mail [address]. I don’t know how you do it. I love you so much, and you’re really hot. And I want you so much.” She also had a wonderful moment of honesty when she described her decision to stop working six years ago because “I wasn’t doing good work.”

*Ensemble, Film: Inglourious Basterds. It’s so cool that they one, I loved this movie! Eli Roth is so f-cking hot, I don’t care. I have a massive crush on that man. Love that they saluted Quentin Tarantino and his vision. Love!

In one additional note, Betty White received the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Sandra Bullock. White was very lovely and funny during her speech, and she quipped “I actually know many of you and I’ve worked with quite a few… Maybe had a couple. And you know who you are.” I kept waiting for someone to mention that, and George Clooney didn’t disappoint. When he presented the Best Ensemble award, he mentioned, “In 1987, I did an episode of ‘The Golden Girls’ and I would like to thank Betty White for her discretion… a friend of mine told me she was a bobcat in the sack.” That’s so hot!

is sandra really that good in the blind side…and suck it clooney glad Jeff is wining all the awards.. Oscar here he come

  2. Kevin says:

WOW! When I first looked at the 1st photo to find something snarky to say about JT, I thought he was standing next to J-Lo. Clooney, funny and charming as usual. Don’t listen to the haters dude. You play the game the way many of us wish we could. Rock on!

  3. Chrissy says:

    Funny about Clooney!

You should watch “The Good Wife”!! It’s a great show. It is one of my favorites now.

  4. Codzilla says:

Or, Michael C. Hall could be sweeping the awards because he’s a brilliant actor who expertly plays one of the most complex and fascinating characters on TV. Why insult him by bringing up the “sympathy vote” crap?

  5. Jenny says:

i agree with Codzilla Michael C. Hall is a brilliant actor

  6. anon says:

i hope sandra isn’t referring to miss congeniality which might be the most hilarious movie i’ve ever seen.

  7. Raven says:

My only complaint is about Drew Barrymore, whom I thought looked great, BTW. But she won last week for the GG and babbled her way through the acceptance speech. Why the heck didn’t she write an acceptance speech for this week? I know she mentioned liking improvisation, but, clearly, she was really bad at it, so just prepare. I guess this shows that she really does have talent, because if she actually performed like this, she wouldn’t ever even be hired, let alone nominated.

  8. xplo says:

I’m glad Jeff Bridges got an award he deserved it, that was an awesome movie go see it if you haven’t yet.

  9. Lindsay says:

Sandra thanked the family as a whole at the Golden Globes. I was watching Reba and George Strait and was so excited I forgot to Tivo the SAG awards. Maybe she didn’t like her or maybe she just thanks the family as a whole since they were all a part of it and the movie it self has been recognized. Does she ever thank Tim in her speeches?

  10. Camille says:

I’m so glad that Jeff Bridges won again! I hope he wins the Oscar as well. Clooney is so over rated IMHO. And I loved the Betty White segment, I just love her. Team Betty! heehee

  11. George Clooney and Betty White. Awesome. Haha 😀

  12. nikki says:

    i love Mo’nique ‘s dress!

  13. Jane Q. Doe says:

In previous interviews, it seemed like Sandy and Leigh Anne Tuohy bonded nicely and got along great. Maybe it was just a slip?

  14. Jamie says:

I agree with Codzilla, too. Michael C. Hall is a fantastic actor, and he deserves to be winning these awards. I’m actually pretty miffed that people think he is cashing in on the C card – rediculous!

  15. ViktoryGin says:

Well, Sandra Bullock has been pretty candid that she initially was not interested in doing the role and that she went into the project harboring a lot of preconceived judgments about the family. Even though things are supposed to be smoothed over, I couldn’t help but notice Bullock’s and the woman’s rather steely body language during an interview on the View. Anyway….

I still like Michael C. Hall’s character from Six Feet Under. I’ve been unable to watch Dexter. Would love to check it out, though.

  16. Kylie says:

Michael C Hall is sooooo good as Dexter… His work deserves an award… It’s kinda wrong that you imply he only got it because he is sick. Have you watched Dexter?

  17. Then Again says:

Betty White is a national treasure. The most hilarious woman actress working today!

  18. Then Again says:

I say Sandra was overrated in her role. I never bought the whole bleached blond hair thing.

  19. Gracie says:

If anyone hasn’t seen it, consider watching a couple of seasons of Six Feet Under. That is where I fell in love with Michael C. Hall and that love only deepened with Dexter.

He is just such a passionate, amazing, in-depth actor. Brilliant. So, yeah, I totally agree that he’s getting the award for sheer talent alone.

And I am sure that there are plently of jokes at home with Jennifer about how he married his “sister”!

  20. bella says:

Love Jeff Bridges’ work. He’s been in some really wonderful things. Has anyone seen the movie on HBO with him and the dog who’d been abused? It was a wonderful movie.

  21. Jazz says:

I’m sure I’ve heard some stories about JT and Kate before. Love Betty White and Jeff Bridges!

  22. Pott54 says:

Congratulations Monique! So far you’ve won the Critics Choice Award, Golden Globe and now the SAG (I’m sure I’ve missed some). What’s left – OSCAR!

And you look fabulous! Sorry you had to kiss ole cotton head Morgan Freeman in the mouth though (vs. Denzel!) – LOL – and I know what you were thinking (we need to stop reading those tabloids–lol).

  23. asiont says:

Michael C. hall definitely deserved to win this award and the globe because he’s an amazing actor and his role in dexter is just great, his winning has nothing to do with his cancer

  24. Shock and Awe says:

Hall is amazing in Dexter. It’s wrong to suggest that he won due to some type of sympathy vote. Cancer or no cancer, he pulls off a serial killer with many dimensions that you can relate to. He makes you question your own morality. (YIKES! Did I just say I relate to a serial killer???)
