Prince William looked unfortunate playing beach volleyball with Brazilian kids

Don’t get me wrong, I love volleyball and beach volleyball. Volleyball is my jam and it’s super-fun to play and to watch. I do not blame Prince William for putting a beach volleyball session on his Rio de Janeiro itinerary whatsoever. But this is exceptionally bad staff work – letting William play beach volleyball in jeans/trousers, and not shutting it down when William was flailing all over the beach and making those crazy faces as he tried to play the game with little kids. Yikes.

Anyway, these are photos from William’s first day in Rio, where he checked off a bunch of appearances and events in a steady clip. He received the keys to the city (Rio) from the mayor. He visited Sugarloaf Mountain. He did a meet-and-greet and took selfies with Brazilians. He went to a football pitch and kicked a ball. And yes, the volleyball photo-op.

The real story of William’s first day in Brazil is that his brother stole his thunder by announcing a trip to Toronto this week. Harry will be highly visible and doing events on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Also on Wednesday: William’s Earthshot Prize ceremony. Then later in the week – I don’t know if it’s on Thursday or Friday – William is supposed to make a “landmark” speech at COP30. While William is surely seething about the head-to-head competition, he should be thanking Harry. More people will pay attention to William’s Rio stuff because of the comparison with his brother. Plus, if those volleyball pics are a harbinger of things to come, William should find Harry’s Toronto visit invaluable as a distraction.

The Telegraph’s Victoria Ward was seething about Harry’s announced trip, as were other royal reporters and royalists. Ward pointed out something I had already assumed: while Harry gave his father/Buckingham Palace a heads up about his trip to Toronto, Harry doesn’t tell Kensington Palace jacksh-t. The question then becomes… why didn’t Buckingham Palace inform KP about Harry’s trip? Meanwhile, Tom Sykes devoted a whole Royalist Substack piece to Harry “dramatically reigniting his long-running war” with Huevo. Sykes also called it “needlessly antagonistic,” which is a fancy way of saying “hilarious.” Sykes actually made one good point though – it’s not like Harry has scheduled something at the same time as the family’s Remembrance Day events. All Harry is doing is some pre-Remembrance events, and he’ll presumably stay somewhat quiet on Remembrance Sunday.

One outlet posted pics that made him look OK. They didn’t show up bad stiff

    • Lady Esther says:

He is so very thin now. What little muscle tone there is left is stretched along his arms like a rabbit that’s had to starve the whole winter…What is going on with the Wales family? He makes Edward look stout in comparison!

      • cws says:

Not saying it’s alcohol, but looks a bit similar to me. Something about alcoholic getting skinny with dry skin because of food malabsorption

      • Betsy says:

Hey @cws – I hope you’re okay. I haven’t been through it to say something actually helpful or insightful, but I’ll be thinking of you.

  2. Tessa says:

A selfie for scoots. He looks demented ready to bite someone. Really embarrassing

  3. Debbie says:

Oh, sweet Jesus, this man in incapable of looking normal. He tries so hard too, but it’s like he’s only got two default settings: constipated or chaos.

    • Simba"a Mom says:

      😂😂😂

    • IKR. Look at me trying to play beach volleyball in jeans and shirt!! Did he not think to pack a pair of shorts? Oh that’s right he doesn’t pack for himself. Wonder if his valet knew of the beach volleyball and decided to mess with him lol. Look at me Harold I’m a sportsman and global statesman! Lol lol!

    • Hypocrisy says:

That is the truth but he is hilarious to watch doing anything involving sports.. he has to be one of the most awkwardly unathletic people I’ve ever seen. It makes for good comedy.

But truthfully he should stop trying to be his athletic brother the difference is night and day.

    • 2131Jan says:

LOLOL perfect description! He’s constantly baring those huge Windsor horse teeth: either trying to look like he’s smiling, or sneering. Same effect. I know the aristos aren’t too keen on orthodonture, but SOME dentist should’ve come out and told them that he has a small mouth for such large teeth, and some teeth should be removed (or filed down) to give him a more “natural” smile/look. It *can* be done.

That said, he honestly would look *so* much better if he’d shave off that scruff. I know it’s to compete with Harry’s (“Granny, WHY does he get to keep his and I can’t have one??” “Beards are MINE, Harold!”). Honestly, it just makes his face look dirty, and makes him look more sleazy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ IMO.

      • Cali says:

His problem is that his palate is so narrow. He should have had an expander when he was a child. They gradually and painlessly widen the palate.
His teeth may still have been overly long but they would have been less noticeable.

      • BeanieBean says:

@Cali: I didn’t know about the palate fix, interesting. And as 2131Jan says, teeth can be filed down. I’ve had that done to my two upper canines–I used to grind my teeth & kept breaking the one. My dentist filed both down just a touch so they wouldn’t be so long & pointy & prone to breakage.

  4. JessicaDell says:

More than a few of the Daily Mail commenters said he “looks like a ballerina.” Even more, several also said its ironic that he took a private jet from the UK to Brazil, to talk about saving the cclimate. In any case, William does not come across as a masculine, alpha male like Harry. William is much softer, no matter what he does. I guess It makes sense for a man who STAYS in his feelings. The Daily Mail demoted that story REAL QUICK!

    • Eurydice says:

Maybe a ballerina who fell down the stairs.

      • Hypocrisy says:

Love that comment, it’s very accurate

      • bubblegum dreams says:

More like a jabbawocky pretending to be a ballerina.

      • 2131Jan says:

He has NO natural grace, no fluidity in movement. He always seems to look so awkward and embarrassed doing anything really. The key to Harry, even if you overlook his natural abilities, is the fact that 1) he SEEMS TO ENJOY doing it (whatever it is that is asked of him), and/or 2) even if he’s embarrassed, he doesn’t mind *showing* that, and isn’t too full of himself, or *afraid* that he’s going to look silly. He does it, and has a SHARED laugh about it. IMO, Scoot’s afraid of not looking the part, of letting *anyone* see (what I think) is still that 15 yr old kid who had to walk behind his mother’s coffin and “suck it up” for the Windsors’ sake. This shell he’s developed over time, to push down all human feelings/connections, has now literally taken over his personality, and he does not *ever* let that down. Bitterness and envy have completely consumed him.

    • maja says:

Where does Harry appear dominant and where does William appear gentle???

I don’t understand these constant comparisons.

Two different men, two different bodies, two different roles, two different lives.

Instead of being happy that one of them is finally successful and the other son of England is devoted to many humanitarian causes without the royal machinery, people make up ridiculous stories about competition. So boring, so annoying.

      • BeanieBean says:

        Wait, William is ‘finally successful’???

      • jais says:

Harry has been successful for a quite a while, despite what the tabs say. And look there’s a obv a physical difference of posture and muscle tone bw the two brothers, sure. But yeah I agree and don’t think that makes one person dominant v weak. It just says one person exercises more than the other and has a different body type. At the end of the day, the issue is we end up viewing the physicality of William through the lens of his actions which are in fact weak, passive aggressive and slimy. The smear campaign he did against Harry and Meghan was slimy af. The fact that he secretly got a settlement from Murdoch without publishing it was slimy af bc being open about the win could’ve have helped the cases of other regular people against Murdoch. But that’s not what he did. There are a lot of people who aren’t fit and that doesn’t make them weak as human beings. Of course not. BFD. However, William just happens to lack core strength while at the same time also being spineless in his actions.

    • Gabby says:

“In any case, William does not come across as a masculine, alpha male like Harry.”
Correct. The only one I think he compares to is Cartman on South Park. An entitled, unprepared, inarticulate racist asshole.

      • maja says:

He is clearly engaged in something meaningful, but we do not know what the outcome will be – however, it is more than before. And I wish him success so that he will finally stop causing his brother and Meghan endless suffering.

  5. Eliza says:

    Sucks to be William.

  6. MSJ says:

William forever the awkward Windsor Prince. 🤭 Always delivers a healthy display of awkwardness to provide a belly full of laughs for me. 😂

Ladies and gentlemen, he is the future of the Windsor brand. Take a good look 👀 at the image. 🙌

  7. Bethany says:

Who plays volleyball in jeans and a shirt tucked in?

  8. Maxine Branch says:

Every outing for William makes him look worst than the last one. A total failure.

  9. Inge says:

Trying sooooooo hard to ‘prove’ that he’s sporty too, honest. Lol.

  10. Eurydice says:

Well, he’s trying, but he’s not a graceful man. All I can see are elbows, knees and teeth.

    • Where'sMyTiara says:

Bully Idle is like a teratoma but with less hair.

    • Sun says:

I’m freaked out Every. Time. about the freaking amount of teeth I’m looking at in pics of him at whatever random ass appearance he shows up for. Wtf.

Just like Kate’s appearances, his expressions are always so incongruous with anyone else in the frame. It’s unsettling.

  11. Ginger says:

I have never seen someone look that crazed playing volleyball with kids. He always looks…odd playing sports. Meanwhile, Harry looks hot playing sports.

  12. sevenblue says:

OMG, why are these photos?? 😭😭😭 Isn’t Chris with him? He would usually make W&K’s photos better than other photographers.

  13. Mrs. Smith says:

I scrolled down to see the pics thinking how bad could those pictures be…😳.

  14. Where'sMyTiara says:

Those photos, dear gods. Did he sleep on that beach? Wrinkled clothes, again. Is he dressing like that deliberately to try to sell his “single dad era” again?

He’s there to get fawned over by C list celebs and gatecrash COP30.
Are the Earth$hit nominees even going to be there?

Having everyone jet out to a different country every year for a ‘climate innovation award’ continues to miss the point of the mission. The jets are part of the pollution problem, Huevo.

The Prince of Wales and his courtiers are an utter clown show.

  15. windyriver says:

Doesn’t Will also play polo? That requires skill and athleticism, and even if he no longer plays regularly, he still suits up for the occasional charity match, so must keep a basic level of fitness. So why does he always look so tentative and awkward whenever he does events involving any athletic skills?

  16. Moondust says:

Looks like a paid vacation to me.

  17. Eleonor says:

I think this was something more suited to Kate…

  18. Sharon says:

Omg he’s trying his hardest against kids 😆

  19. Jay says:

“While Harry gave his father/Buckingham Palace a heads up about his trip to Toronto, Harry doesn’t tell Kensington Palace jacksh-t.” And that’s why the visit to Toronto remained a secret.

That photo of TOB sprawled on the sand in his black jeans looks quite silly. Is he supposed to be goofing around (as his opponents are actually children)? Because he looks like he thinks he’s competing in the Olympics. Imagine seeing this grown man lunging and diving for the volleyball amongst children half his size! He looks demented.

If they wanted a cute photoshoot, the best thing to do would be to pit him against all of the children on the other side of the net! Also, he’s less likely to trample over a small child on his own team while trying to make a Sports Illustrated moment. He should embrace being a heel for once and just let the kids enjoy beating him, but obviously his ego couldn’t take it.

    • Val says:

If you watch the video, the kids actually knew how to play and were very good- way better than him and were controlling the ball to give him easy passes. And, that’s probably why he looks like a maniac- he was trying to keep up! This is the fault of the courtiers who should have known what a disaster this photo op would be

      • Jay says:

I’m not surprised that the kids were good – beach volleyball is huge in Brazil for a reason, and I’m also not surprised that the heir was barely keeping up with them. He’s not exactly a natural athlete.

As a parent, though, I’m on edge seeing a grown man towering over these children and diving for the ball. It’s risky! And not that fun. I would have put like 30 kids on the other side of the net all clamouring to take him down. Then, the antics would read as funny, not desperate. And he could have “bet” the kids some kind of Brazilian treat that they could all enjoy afterwards.

  20. tamsin says:

Was he playing with kids? I’m thinking he should be looking like he’s having fun, and letting the kids shine. He looks really intense, like it’s an olympic game.

  21. Isolde says:

Look at the kids’ faces: they do not know who the unfortunate looking man is and couldn’t care less…

  22. Giddy says:

Does Eggington have an enemy in his own camp? Why oh why schedule him to play beach volleyball? If he is going to do it, can’t his valet pack appropriate clothing? He looks like the most demented Dad trying to participate in his child’s field day…not Royal looking at all. These are not pictures that shout “future king,”.

  23. jais says:

Well, look at William working hard. That’s a lot of events for one day. It’s been a while since we’ve seen that. Someone mentioned yesterday how this feels like a royal tour centered around Earth shot. Anyways, as far as the dates, agree that it seems like Harry planned to do his events in the week before remembrance. Presumably ES is right before Remembrance bc William can’t plan it during October bc that’s when he has his yearly fall vacation. So oh well. I am curious why BP didn’t give KP a heads up. Did William just find out about Harry’s visit as we did? Yikes. LOL.

  24. E says:

    What a weirdo

    • SIde Eye says:

I love your comment E! Reminds me of that SNL skit where Peyton Manning goes full beast mode on the kids. This totally has that vibe.

      • BeanieBean says:

I was listening to an old episode of What a Creep the other day in which Lance Armstrong was doing a charity race with kids & one kid was heading into the home stretch about to win & Lance Armstrong just couldn’t let that happen, he sped up at the very end to win. What a creep, indeed.

      • Bqm says:

That is one of my all time favorites. He does his whole Omaha, Omaha play calling, wings the ball, knocks them over. “I throw, you catch. It’s not that difficult. Get the f*** out of here.”

      • E says:

Ha! Thanks for the SNL rec Side Eye – made my day.

Kaiser, would you please use the picture of the POW jumping in midair for every post about him going forward? Just a humble request 😊

  25. Becks1 says:

I find it hilarious that Harry told his father and not his brother AND that Charles did not leak to KP. If he had, we would have heard about this trip sooner and with more KP rage. William must be screaming down the phone to anyone and everyone.

The pictures I’m seeing from this Brazil trip look…..I mean it looks like William is on another vacation. I know he’s meant to be highlighting culture or whatever but he’s playing beach volleyball and soccer/football and looking absolutely ridiculous while doing both.

Earthshot to me just epitomizes what’s wrong with William. Earthshot would have functioned very nicely as a small awards ceremony in London every year with the focus on the prize winners. It’s ended up coming across as desperate and pathetic as William is trying so hard to compete with Invictus. But if William had just stuck to something similar like his father does with the Prince’s Trust awards, it would have been better overall.

His big issue work-wise in my opinion (besides his lack of work) is that he’s always trying to compete with harry and falling desperately short. Harry is very very good at what he does – his charity projects, his work with veterans, his ability to connect with people – he’s very good at all of that, partially because he works at it and partially bc it comes naturally to him and is just part of who he is. William is not good at it and to a large extent that’s okay – find something that you are good at, use your role for good in such a way that you can be effective at it.

But he (and Kate) are instead always playing catch up with H&M and they look ridiculous as a result.

    • Joanne says:

I think that the real difference is that Harry concentrates on bringing attention to the causes and charities he supports while William uses the causes to bring attention to himself.

      • Becks1 says:

Yes, that’s part of what he does so well – he centers the charity/organization, William centers himself.

    • jais says:

Forever it could have just been in London. William hasn’t done a foreign tour for the govt. in forever. Yet he travels for his own thing, ES.

  26. Elsa says:

Eh. He looks like he is having fun.

  27. Caren says:

The Sun had pics and a video. He didn’t look that bad. He’s 43 and plays like he hasn’t done this in years. Not his sport. He’s 6’3″. He did several sports at school. He was considered a strong swimmer and good at water polo.

    • Nerd says:

Are there photos of him doing any of those water sports in university? Not to say that he didn’t do it but I’ve learned through the lies the media has told us about Harry, for essentially all of his life, I have to question what they’ve told us about William. We know about Harry and his Not See uniform because of the media but we never see the photos of William at the same party or the one for his own birthday with the very racist themes. We were told that they were each others best men but that was a lie. We are always told about how hard William works and how he’s smarter than Harry, but there is never any real evidence of any of that. According to the media, William’s a statesman but we’ve yet to see that happen. He’s 43 years old and has more privilege and people catering to him yet ES is only 5 years old while Harry has successful causes and charities that are anywhere from 5, 10 to twenty years old.

      • BeanieBean says:

Yeah, there’s plenty of photos of him playing water polo in his university days. Guy had a long reach.

      • Bqm says:

There are. I remember seeing them at the time. It was William still had some aesthetic appeal. (Even though I never like Speedo’s personally.) He was very fit then but it was his college years. And he played a lot of regular polo which he always looked good at. But Harry is the one who inherited Philip’s natural all around athleticism. Charles had it to a large degree too well into his later years.

    • Nic919 says:

Being taller should make you better at volleyball because it is easier to clear the net. And being good at water sports doesn’t mean you are good at all sports.

Sometimes a little humility in acknowledging shortcomings is a good thing. As it is there is this awkward giant all over the sand with small kids in the background wondering what is going on. Even if they are split second moments, they are bad ones to preserve.

I see the KP bots have found this post.

  28. Vik says:

William was very well received here in Brazil. Got some good press from local and internacional media. No one isn checking for Harry bsfr

    • MsIam says:

Why would anyone be checking for Harry in Brazil? Besides William of course, because otherwise why would he (and the rota) be mad?

    • Julia says:

Harry’s not in Brazil of course Brazilian media’s not writing about him. Harry hasn’t been seen since the weekend. Why would we expect Brazilian media to write bad articles about William? He’s their guest? I’m in the UK and media about Earthshot except from sycophantic rota has been muted and drowned out by other news…

    • Becks1 says:

Why would Brazilian media be checking for or writing about Harry?

What does “bsfr” mean? “be so for real?” thats what my 11 year old says….for real.

      • Dee(2) says:

It always amuses me when these royalist fans show up here to tell us how in whatever country of choice they all love William and Kate, and don’t think about Harry or Meghan at all. That’s their problem and that’s William and Kate’s problem. Harry and Meghan don’t care if they get good press. Being upset about being overshadowed is a uniquely British royal family issue.

      • Nic919 says:

Wait till they find out that no canadian media is discussing william in brazil.

    • Nerd says:

Why would anyone be checking for Harry in Brazil? And why would they be checking for him right now when his even is in Canada and it won’t start until Wednesday? That’s like children checking for Santa now when they know that he doesn’t appear until December 25th. No one would expect a person who was welcomed somewhere to not get good press because that’s a reflection on the country they are visiting and that warm welcome doesn’t change the fact that William always looks awkward and weird when he’s doing anything athletic (maybe with the exception of polo) and with children (with the exception of his own kids).

  29. MSJ says:

I wonder if we’ll get some more photos of awkward William attempting to be sporty again today. I hope we do. I need more laughter from his antics. 😂

I suppose KP will work closely with the Royal Rota to manage the optics for better photos today. They’ll probably limit international press access. 🙃

  30. MsIam says:

When I first saw these pics last night I was wondering what the hell William was doing. The one where he’s falling forward looks like he’s been shipwrecked and crawling out of the water towards land.

  31. Linney says:

William is so clueless, it’s unbelievable. These kinds of pictures, no matter how goofy, would work if William himself was hard-working. Then people could say, “Isn’t it great to see our hard-working prince show his fun-loving side?” The problem is, William is so lazy, greedy and entitled. With all the serious problems in the world, he needs to move into his “forever home” because Adelaide Cottage was “cursed.” Then, Mr. Hello Cover Model blabs his concerns about HIS children not being to enjoy the environment and Mother Nature. People are worried about keeping a roof over their heads, holding a job, feeding their children, and now this idiot is playing volleyball on a Brazilian beach to show, he thinks, he’s one of the people. How is that cure for homelessness going, Prince Scooter?

    • jais says:

I think you’re right. The pics are goofy and funny and could possibly be interpreted as endearing if he hadn’t just land-grabbed 150 acres of community parkland for his new home. If he had been seen doing anything more substantial than counting sporting events as work events this past year. So yeah, it could work if William was known as hard-working. But he’s not.

    • Becks1 says:

These types of pictures just further cement the idea that William will only work if its something fun – that’s why I think so many of us are rolling our eyes. anytime he may have to actually “work” his team has to organize something fun alongside it to get him out of the house. Here it was beach vollyball and football.

A picture of Charles trying (and failing most likely lmao) to hit a volleyball at an event like this – even awkwardly in a 3 piece suit – would have gone over differently bc no one thinks Charles has to be bribed with fun events before he’ll work.

      • BeanieBean says:

Oh, he totally would have been in a 3-piece suit! And he would have had fun! Real fun, not forced fun!

  32. Tuesday says:

I must be the only person who doesn’t think these pictures are awful? I don’t like William, but I don’t get annoyed just to see him breathing. Idk.

    • Becks1 says:

Apparently there are a few pro William people in these comments who agree with you lol.

The reason these pics are so bad to me is that it reads like William didn’t know he was going to be participating in this. I dont care how good he is at volleyball or not (beach volleyball is a lot harder than people think) but playing like this in jeans and a button down makes it seem like he didn’t know this was going to happen.

I’m also not sure how this event ties into Earthshot – I’m sure there’s a connection there, but the focus is on William playing on the beach. That’s the big issue for me. and like was said above…..it reads like he’ll only work if there’s a fun event included.

      • jais says:

It doesn’t help that he went strait from a 2 week vacay to playing volleyball in Brazil. For all we know, he’s been in Brazil at a private beach for the past 2 weeks. This was meant to be cute for the photo-ops. And well they got some photos, lol.

      • MsIam says:

I’m sure it’s because there are all of those pictures of Harry playing sitting volleyball with the Invictus participants. Or when Harry was on that luge thing in Vancouver. Look, I get the need for some “fun” photo ops for William but you can’t try and push “fun cool William” stories at the same time as he is portrayed as a raging a-hole towards his brother and niece and nephew. The two images don’t jibe.

      • Tina says:

It just makes no sense with earthshot. What does beach volleyball have to do with this event? They are trying so hard to fill his calendar and make him look cool. Just focus on the event and the nominees. He really has terrible advisers.

      • jais says:

See, here’s my thing. No, it doesn’t have to do with ES. But it’s about trying to maximize his events and work numbers and photo-ops and giving the rota a little pseudo-royal tour. One could argue, he is wanting to showcase orgs in Brazil while he’s there. Once could also argue he is just playing the game. If you’re gonna make this freaking awards show travel to a different country, you gotta make it count and give the rota some pics of cutesy type things. I’m just forever fascinated that William’s royal tours are built around what HE wants to do as opposed to collaborating with the foreign service office or something. And look, Harry founded IG, yes, but he was also simultaneously being sent by the foreign office to different countries ALL the time in lieu of William and Kate. He was not doing just the IG when he was a working royal. He did both. It was not one or the other with him. Whereas with William, it is. He does stuff for ES but nothing else outside the UK except getting cajoled into going to the pope’s funeral. Like come on.

    • Swaz says:

I think both William and the pictures are awful 😞

  33. Beverley says:

Oh look, Scooter seems to think he’s a real boy! 🙃😛

  34. Amy Bee says:

I’m very disappointed that that Harry has agreed to Charles’ demand that he provide BP with his schedule of events. He is very naive to believe BP doesn’t tell the press about his whereabouts. Was it BP that told the press about his visit to Angola? Anyway I’m going to assume that KP was made aware of Harry’s visit to Canada but is pretending to not know about it. Anyway why did KP make William play volleyball in a shirt and long pants? He should have changed into an t-shirt marked Earthshot Prize and shorts.

    • MsIam says:

I think it could be so he knows (and Charles knows) where the leaks are coming from. I don’t think BP leaked to KP because then Tom Sucks and Maureen would have been shouting “Exclusive!” from the rooftops.

    • Jay says:

Canada is still a nation with Charles as the monarch, so it was probably impossible to keep it secret even if Harry wanted to. Plus, there may be security reasons for informing Charles – if I remember from other visits, it may help the RCMP coordinate ample security. I guess I’m just giving Harry the benefit of the doubt when it comes to Charles – if he thinks it’s fine or even safer to inform his father about his whereabouts, then who am I today otherwise.

I find it HILARIOUS that Charles knew but apparently said nothing. It’s basically his favourite move: pit one son against the other then sit back and watch. He probably knew that news of Harry’s trip would put William in a rage with his brother, hopefully taking him down a peg and ensuring that he doesn’t try to “steal” Charles’ pet issue, the environment.
Plus, The ensuing drama will hopefully distract from the whole Andrew fiasco.

      • BeanieBean says:

That’s what I’m thinking, Harry has to give a heads up only for those Commonwealth Countries, nowhere else.

The Canadian government would be providing Harry with VIP security unrelated to Charles. They are not coordinating with the UK government especially because the rules are different here. I.e. bodyguards can be armed here but need to clear it with the RCMP.

Canada is not a colony of the UK anymore so if Harry advised BP it is because he wanted to. They were not coordinating with the UK when Invictus was happening in. Vancouver.

  35. Bea says:

I don’t see how William playing volleyball with locals is bad. You don’t have to spin everything to make sure it’s negative.

    • Julia says:

The UK is in a cost of living crisis and William flies half way round the world with taxpayer funded security and multiple members of staff to host an environmental prize that could have been held in the uk. Brazil isn’t even a commonwealth country. He spends his first day doing photo opportunities at tourist sites. The optics aren’t great…

    • Nerd says:

I don’t think it’s an argument that him playing beach volleyball is a bad thing, the photos themselves look bad because he manages to somehow always look awkward and weird when he’s doing things like this. The issue as far as I’m concerned is the fact that he’s obviously doing all of this to compete with Harry and IG. His reason to be there is centered around ES, yet he never uses any of the time around it to focus on the winners or what they winners focus on. This has nothing to do with the environment, so why fly (by jet) all over the world for this awards show that is supposed to be environmentally conscious? Why is it the winners are never showcased? Why is it he is always flying in celebrities for this instead of the winners who deserve the real attention? The problem is that his actions throughout the year and his actions leading up to ES show that he really doesn’t care about the environment or the winners. This would have been much better if this were held in London each year and the winners were highlighted. By doing it this way it’s always a reminder that he’s trying to play catchup to Harry and that it will never happen.

      • BeanieBean says:

It’s this. This is not a royal visit to a commonwealth country, it’s supposed to be about Earthsh*t & environmentalism. Beach volleyball in black jeans & a dark button-down shirt is just not part of the scenario. It makes no sense.

      @Bea
The Montecito Rockstars would like a word…
Mosey on back to Saltine Isle.

  36. blue says:

Why didn’t he wear shorts? Is it because Kate always wears jeggings or jeans when she kicks balls around with children?
This was a strange choice of activity at an Earthshot event. A visit to a school or kids’ club talking or demonstrating some connection to conservation would have been much better & more comfortable than diving into sand fully clad in street clothing.

    • Lurker says:

To his credit, he did that too. I watched a video where he was talking with children about their hopes and dreams, hugged them, and I didn’t cringe. Seems a day in the sun, far away from the RF and his loving wife, do him good. Beside that he doesn’t know how to smile for the camera (I just want to feed him a carrot) I think he did not do such bad a job.

Why he have to tour the world with his Earthshit Prize (in a private jet, really? Others wrote he flew commercial) is another question. A lovely annual ceremony in London, highlighting what the awardees did in videos, would have been much better. He could even invite celebrities.

As for Harry, not his fault that Remembrance week is in November. His schedule was set by the organizations a year in advance, as People magazine pointed out. Due to security reasons it is announced publicly only right before the date of the event. Harry kindly let BP know. Too bad they didn’t inform KP. The British media could decide to concentrate on “he who is king in all but name” and ignore Harry. Just saying.

      • Nerd says:

The fact of the matter is that the British media has always had the option to ignore Harry (and Meghan) but they choose not to. Harry and Meghan aren’t the ones writing the articles in the UK or anywhere else. They aren’t the ones who become incandescent with rage when other royals do things. The idea that Harry and Meghan ever needed to share any information with the other royals when they left but the same isn’t expected of the others says that the others and their fans know that Harry and Meghan are more interesting and appealing to watch. That isn’t their fault, that’s the other royals and the media.

  37. Over it says:

Kaiser , you could have just stopped at willy looks unfortunate . I mean let’s be honest, it doesn’t matter what he is doing, he always looks that way.

  38. Elly says:

Looking at these photos what strikes me is that people are laughing at William whereas they always laugh with Harry. William seems to be putting on a performance. Harry is warm, kind and sincere and people recognize the difference.

  39. QuiteContrary says:

His staff either hates him or is as incompetent as he is (probably both). How hard would it be to pack a pair of shorts and a T-shirt?

  40. Is that so? says:

No one told Kensington Palace because Kensington Palace leaks.
Isn’t Harry’s deal with Charles that neither side could leak without consequences?

  41. Aimee says:

    Soulless, joyless, purposeless.

  42. therese says:

I’m embarrassed. What is that word? Fontrom, I think. I learned that from Lainey. She used to use that word: third-hand embarrassment at something someone else was doing. It’s just embarrassing. Volleyball is a team sport, you know. Yet I don’t see him surrounded with his “teammates”: there is only one little girl in a picture, and she doesn’t look happy. Ah well, you go ahead on William. And you know, if he thought his wife was embarrassing………I’m just saying.

  43. Hattie says:

William is doing that Kate thing where she cosplays Meghan. The green shirt and jeans are snatched straight from Prince Harry’s minimal wardrobe. It’s a combination he wore during their official tour of Southern Africa. Harry has so few clothes; William already coveted the white-soled sneakers, and he is wearing them all the time now.

  44. Pam says:

This is going to be a repeat of the flop tour, isn’t it?

  45. martha says:

Although royalists want to make out that Harry did this to his brother on purpose to steal his thunder, I’d argue that Charles’ dithering so long re Andrew that he was forced to take action + make announcements less than a week before Earthshot shows Charles’ lack of respect for William!

There are more serious stories in the press about Andrew than there are silly Harry-ignites-feud-with-William diary-clash stories.

  46. jferber says:

Ginger, Harry looks hot not playing sports too. Harry looks hot, period. I can’t believe how utterly homely William has become after the hotness of his early twenties. The transformation is astounding, like someone put an ugly curse on him. And how embarrassing he looks playing on the beach. Unbelievably homely and trying (and failing) to grandstand on the beach. “Look at me, I’m relatable too.” But I would never want to look as ridiculous as William does. He can’t win for losing.

    • Iolanthe says:

Cringe , cringe…his children must be shrivelling in embarrassment. Mummy is flashing blonde wigs , Daddy rides a kiddy scooter , both parents scamper around in naycha trying to look festive and romantic. And now Daddy wants to be sporty . Ugh , its kinder not to look . This is all because Uncle Harry plays polo , surfs , rides, is fit and good at sports and fought for his country . This is so pathetic
