Rosie O’Donnell plots return to daytime TV

Rosie O’Donnell is reportedly planning a return to daytime TV that will coincide with Oprah’s exit in 2011. She’s working with two executives that were responsible for her popular talk show, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, which aired from 1996 to 2002. The show will be independently produced, and while her last show was a hit there’s a question as to whether this one will even get picked up. Rosie was generally difficult to deal with and caused a lot of controversy in the past few years, particularly with her stint on The View and abrupt exit. Plus her Thanksgiving variety special in 2008 was just awful and tanked in the ratings. If she’s planning something similar, she should let someone else produce and write it.

Rosie O’Donnell’s new domestic TV syndication deal reunites with her two old pals from past lives.

Rosie’s gone into business with Scott Carlin, former head of HBO Domestic Distribution, and Dick Robertson, ex head of Warner syndication. More than a decade ago, Carlin worked with Robertson at Warner TV.

These two are powerhouses. Carlin at HBO was responsible for the sale of “The Sopranos” to A&E, and for the sale of “clean” episodes of “Sex and the City” to stations everywhere.

For Rosie, reuniting with this pair means the promise of big deals as they look to replace Oprah Winfrey in the afternoon slot she’s leaving come 2011. If Rosie returns to a live-feel show from New York, expect big things, too.

One thing she won’t do: put her Sirius radio show on TV. If Rosie’s back, it’s going to be big: Broadway performances, all her friends, and lots of laughs.

I watched Rosie’s show quite a bit back when it aired and she was genuinely funny and friendly with a kind of infectious enthusiasm. The thing is, she’s changed a lot since that time and has become a much more combative and politically charged person. She’s not at all like Ellen, who does bring up issues important to her on the show but presents them in a more positive way. I just don’t think Rosie can bring back her old format because she’s a much grumpier person. Maybe her new romance has helped her tone it down a bit, but I doubt that she’s going to be successful with this venture.

Didn’t she try to return to TV, only to have failed? Wasn’t it a variety show?

They are taking a huge gamble with this one. She’s burned many bridges in the entertainment industry. Like Donald Trump said, everything she touches, FAILS, not only in her career, but private life as well.

I love Rosie! I hope she is happier now and can make a successful return to TV!

Co-sign. In the 90s, she was genuinely likable, almost to the point of being saccharine sometimes. This is no longer the case, because it seems as though every time she opens her mouth she’s talking trash. I actually like Rosie, but I don’t think that she is mild enough for daytime TV anymore.

Unless she manages to tone down her schtick, I don’t know how well she’s going to do. She did okay on the View because she had the rest of the panel to balance her out, when they got a word in edgewise.

She’s just gotten so hard and said so many things she can’t back away from, it’s going to be hard to get some guests to even show up, you’d think. I think she’s gone too far to go back to doing an arts and crafts segment.

My opinion doesn’t matter much, I won’t watch anyway, lol.

I have never particularly cared for Rosie O’Donnell but just saw her on Oprah (backlogged on my DVR from February, I think)and was surprised by how much I liked her. She sounded pretty down to earth. I actually think I’d be willing to give her a chance, and I’d never watched any of her other shows before.

The word is Ellen isn’t as nice as her persona makes her seem (and I haven’t felt the same about her since the dog adoption fiasco). At least with Rosie, what you see is what you get now. Might be interesting.

  6. SammyHammy says:

She has alienated herself from such a large portion of the population with her hateful, ugly rantings that I genuinely think this will be a huge fail.

  7. snapdragon says:

she’s like an annoyng foghorn, blaring uncontrollably.

  8. YT says:

I won’t be watching. I didn’t like her show before. She was in a good mood and funny as long as everything went her way, but I could feel the storm clouds forever lurking if things didn’t go her way. Agree with her or die.

  9. ThunderC*nt says:

Yeah! Love her. So refreshing. Let the hilarity ensue. There’s always a place for Rosie. Crazy hijinx action.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    Will. Not. Watch.

I honestly believe she is mentally unbalanced. WAY too many drastic swings for me to believe she’s 100% mentally healthy.

  13. The Bobster says:

Dumb obnoxious cowhead should just do us all a favor and disappear forever. This thing actually has a demographic?

  14. Eden says:

Bobster – I agree!!! Rosie is a disgusting, loud mouthed, obnoxious, rude cowhead!!! GO AWAY!!!!

  15. Tazina says:

I love Rosie. Her morning talk show on satellite radio is fantastic! I will now have to subscribe to Sirius XM and buy a radio so I don’t miss it.

Rosie is one of those few people who makes me LOL. Her Opera interview was so revealing and honest. I like her because she is obnoxious and loud-mouthed. Some of the talk show hosts just say what they think we want to hear and are pathetically boring and whimpy. I depend on Rosie for a great twists in her views from the masses and hilarious comments. Maybe she isn’t 100% stable but who cares? It doesn’t seem to me that she has anymore personal problems than the next person…..

  17. James says:

I love Rosie, she’s had a great career and it’s great to see her back on daytime 🙂
