Princess Kate wore a new Catherine Walker coat to the Commonwealth service

Here are more photos from the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey on Monday. The Windsors were not really out in force – King Charles, Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales, Princess Anne and Tim Laurence and the Gloucesters were all in attendance. And honestly, it felt like the Gloucesters, Anne and Tim were all there just as seat-fillers, to try to make it look like the family is full of working royals. Tell me that Britain’s Commonwealth ties are going the way of the dodo without telling me. QEII was a big believer in the Commonwealth, and King Charles basically just tries to maintain the connections while doing the bare minimum. Prince William doesn’t give a rat’s ass about any of this.

Some superficial notes… Princess Kate wore a new Catherine Walker coatdress which was very fussy but very “Kate.” She paired it with that multi-strand pearl necklace she’s been wearing a lot in recent years, plus diamond-and-pearl earrings from the Royal Collection, the same pair she usually borrows for special occasions. Kate also donned her Wiglet of Commonwealth Secrets™, which was just as doll-wiggy as can be. Camilla chose a bright red coat and a big diamond brooch. That piece is the Cartier palm brooch, which was passed down from the Queen Mother to Queen Elizabeth II, and then to Camilla. I… find it gross that Camilla inherited those family pieces. I feel like those kinds of pieces should go to a direct family member, like Anne or one of QEII’s granddaughters.

Anyway, not only did the Commonwealth service feel sparse and grim, it was made a lot worse by the loud, boisterous Republic protests outside the Abbey. They were calling both King Charles AND Prince William “parasites” and asking what did the royals know about Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein.

They all look a mess and miserable but Kate with those shoulder pads and hat looks horrendous. What is up with that rictus smile of hers??

    • another cross to carry says:

I have been asking ’bout that smile for some time now!

    • Shanta says:

ThatGirlThere……that’s the first thing that I thought…..ditch the shoulder pads. Honestly the color was beautiful…. But it could have used some tailoring.

      • kelleybelle says:

The shoulder pads are necessary to bulk up her frame because she’s so painfully thin.

  2. vs says:

From the side, she looks like a witch

    • fwiw says:

Yes, what has she done to her chin?

      • Jen says:

Hold on now about the pointy chin. Some of us cannot help that we were born with this (minor) affliction

      • fwiw says:

Apologies, Jen. I believe Kate’s problem here is how her “smile” makes her unrounded chin jut out.

    • Kat says:

VS l know what you mean , we all can see how under nourished Kate is here, .but some of these outfits just don’t flatter her, those heels are far too high for a church service , dont get me started on that necklace , too big for her and too old fashioned and in all fairness that stupid looking 5 euro hat, she can get any hat she wants from any designer and she picks that thing ?? Please Kate, get on or steal.your husband scooter and fly over to Vogue to get yourself sorted!!

  3. Dee(2) says:

Wow, that was pretty loud. I know it came from the perspective in the Republic protest, but even for the crowd of people across the street I couldn’t hear not even a little bit of cheering. They are cooked. When you compare what their ” crowds” look like at regular events to this, the downfall is apparent. I don’t care how many comments are on the daily mail’s website, in real time people showing interest in them? For a positive reason? That’s gone.

And it’s wild, because I really feel like it’s gone off a cliff in less than a decade. If they are still around in 10 years, they won’t even need to block off the streets. They’ll be able to just jump out their cars and walk right into buildings, regardless of the event.

    • Jukia says:

@Dee There was a clip on the BBC from near the entrance to the cathedral and even with a steel band playing you could hear the booing and heckling. The engagement on the Daily Mail for the usual sycophantic royal stories is getting less and less. Only mentioning the Yorks or the Sussexes attracts more commenters. There really has been a shift since the beginning of the year and the release of the Epstein files but I’m not sure the royals realise how serious this is for them yet. I think a lot of the public have just tuned out!

      • Unblinkered says:

@Jukia – they should all be worried sick, this equals 1930s Abdication Crisis & Death of Diana. Andrew has opened a Pandora’s Box and, as things stand, they all now face having their finances and housing arrangements examined publically. And not before time.

It was quite wrong that only the loosely defined working royals stood at the Abbey entrance yesterday, it should have been their respective families too all those directly or indirectly enjoying the royal largesse. Makes one view the situation a little differently, yes?

    • Kat says:

Dee, As Prince Philip.said to his wife in the final.scene of The Crown ‘The Party is over’ especially with that ‘lot’ !!
      Wasnt.he so.right

  4. lamejudi says:

    @kaiser I don’t mean to nitpick, but Kate’s necklace is a 5 strand one.

Please feel free to remove or not post this!

  5. Cassie says:

It’s a lovely coat but gosh she is thin .
I guess that’s what she wants and all the magazines are gushing about how stunning she looked ,

    • Jukia says:

@Cassie To be fair all fashion/celebrity magazines say that female celebrities look ‘stunning’ at events whether it’s true or not.

    • Adventure says:

Yes. She is so, so thin now. I was watching a brief video of her and Wilbur the other day, and she was leaning forward to read something on display and you could see every single vertebrae bone sticking out through the back of her dress. It’s distressing to look at her now. I know a lot of eating disorders come from feeling that there’s nothing in their life that they can control except for their eating habits, but this is so extreme now it’s hard to watch. To me it feels like she’s trying to be the ultimate Diana cosplay, like she’s trying to complete with Diana’s eating disorders and out-do her weight loss. It’s not healthy at all.

  6. LADY DIGBY says:

Kate is definitely NOT giving Wilbur a festive glance here is she? She will be hacked off that she only got one front page cover and that one newspaper choose the photo of Geri kissing the King INSTEAD of her! How very dare they!
    https://news.sky.com/story/tomorrows-newspaper-front-pages-12427754?postid=11238592#liveblog-body

    • Emily says:

And the front page is the Express, which no one really takes seriously as paper anymore. It’s an anti Brexit, pro royal comic.

  7. Tessa says:

That long wig hanging down keens back is not a good look.

  8. Tessa says:

She has thst pasted on grin and poses for csmeras. She needs a shoulder length hair trim

  9. Tessa says:

Is the palm brooch going to be passed down by Camilla to her daughter. Would scooter reclaim it first

    • Amy Bee says:

I believe it’s part of the Royal Vault so it stays in the Royal Family. Kate will probably be the next person to wear it.

    • Lauren says:

All of the jewelry was actually inherited by Charles but it will be interesting to see how much he manages to pass to Camilla instead of William

    • Lady Esther says:

If it’s part of the Royal Collection, it’s supposed to be owned by the British people (by the Crown). However, not all jewelry given to the Royal Family makes it to the collection, quelle surprise, per the Guardian’s investigative series

If Charles wants to bequeath Royal jewelry to Camilla, then she would have to pay tax on it. Monarch-to-monarch bequests are not taxed. King William, for both personal reasons (Diana) and petty, cheap reasons (keep all the money!) would never allow it. But Charles is unlike William and has bought Camilla millions of pounds of personal jewelry over the years, to the point where Diana used to complain that as mistress, she got all the actual jewels while Diana got paste (high-quality fakes) from Charles. Camilla will be fine

      • Bqm says:

Most of the jewelry is privately owned not part of the RC. No mystery about it. It didn’t need a Guardian story. The most recognizable pieces are largely bought or wedding gifts. The “rule” about gifts from heads of state etc only came into being in this more recent era. I don’t think it’s even thirty years.

Charles can give Camilla whatever he wants before he dies with no inheritance tax. He bought her plenty before he became king. And there are lot of smaller pieces like rings and brooches that have probably gathered dust for decades.

  10. Mary grace says:

Not a fan of Kate but I can’t wait for her to start wearing all Camilla’s jewels when Charles dies

    • Sure says:

I’m assuming C’s jewels will remain hers after KFC’s death.

    • Adventure says:

If Wilbur lets her. He’s certainly cut her wardrobe budget significantly, and he doesn’t seem to trust her with jewelry after she “lost” that beautiful necklace. I don’t think she’s going to have any control over what she can borrow from the Royal Collection at all, and Wilbur is going to use his control to make sure she barely gets to wear anything new as punishment. They’ll probably make some fakes for her to wear instead.

  11. Jais says:

Look what happens when the events are announced and known about as opposed to surprise visits. What a loud congregation!

  12. Becks1 says:

I can’t tell from that Tatler article who the Palm Brooch belonged to – whether it was personal or whether it was at some point made part of the royal collection. It’s possible that QEII just left most of her personal jewelry to Charles so no one paid inheritance tax. But even if she did it would be nice of Camilla to essentially gift it to anne on permanent loan or something. but alas, Camilla isn’t giving up any jewelry if she can help it, lol.

Kate looked fine. The hair was a little too doll-like, the hat a little too big, the shoulders a little too pointy, but the color was nice and this look is very much Kate, right down to those little errors because Kate never gets it 100% right (or very rarely.)

The protestors…..whew. the monarchy is in trouble and I wonder if they realize it. I don’t think its going to completely end but I think in 10 years it will look very different and the funding will be overhauled again.

    • Nic919 says:

There is a photo of kate looking almost angry as you can tell she’s heard the protestors as she is walking to the abbey. William is looking straight ahead and has a better poker face.

      • Tessa says:

Keen probably believes all of her own PR. ANd just can’t understand why she is protested.

      • BeanieBean says:

Oh, she heard all right. They all heard it.

And per the Court Jeweler (RIP Royal Order of Splendour), Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother commissioned the Palm Leaf Brooch then passed it to QEII. So, personal item not Royal Collection I would think. QEII to Charles, Charles to wife of the moment, from there…who knows. It sure is beautiful.

    • Becks1 says:

Also I think someone asked this yesterday – Edward and Sophie are at the paralympic games. Seems like that would have been a great event for W&K but I guess too much work.

      • Nic919 says:

The last Paralympics they were supposed to attend were in London 2012 but they took off pretending to prepare for a tour and were instead in France. That’s when the topless photos showed up.
While the controversy of the photos took over the news, the real story was them lying about preparing for a tour and taking a holiday.

    • Bqm says:

Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, commissioned Cartier to fashion the palm brooch in 1938, using existing diamonds from her personal collection. The brooch’s most famous appearance was at the funeral of her husband, George VI, in February 1952. The famous Three Queens in Mourning photo. It was personal property left to the Queen who presumably left it to Charles. It’s not part of the RC so he could’ve given it to Camilla, who loves brooches, or she’s just wearing it during her lifetime and it’ll go to William.

      • Nic919 says:

If it’s from the personal collection then Charles doesn’t have to leave it to William. He could leave it to Camilla.
Only royal collection items have to go to the next monarch.

  13. Kittenmom says:

Kate has the same profile as Mac Tonight.

  14. Amy Bee says:

The Royal women look like they live in the 1950s.

  15. Lamb Chop says:

Really, at this point, people should be asking them much more and extensive questions about their finances. Where did all this mysterious “billions ” came from? Produce provenance for every single item they purport to own, and return such billions from wence they came. At this point there’s little gain from yelling about pedrew, there is a lot of gain about questioning their bogus stolen wealth. A lot of this was remarkably obtained in less than 200 years.

    • BrackenSweetwater says:

Less than that. Eddie the Abdicator inherited everything his father owned, and the family very nearly bankrupted itself buying Balmoral, Sandringham, and SOME of the family jewels back from him when he left. Not sure who he left everything to when he died.

  16. Octopus says:

If you look at the pictures of Kate and William they look so much, in appearance and dress, like old pictures of King George and Czar Nicholas holidaying on yachts pre WW1. Before George and Mary said no to taking in the cousins after the Bolsheviks took over. I mean Kate would blend right in those old pics from 130 years ago. It feels like that’s the kind of role they want too-remote, stuffy, and to interact with the peasants as little as possible.

    • Tessa says:

Scooter has scruff. George and Nicholas had real beards.

    • Bqm says:

Mary didn’t say no to the Romanovs that’s an old canard. And George was right to do so. Unless we don’t think a constitutional monarch should care more about royal privilege than the best for the country.

      • Cal says:

🙄Best for his country? His relatives were captured and murdered, because he pressured the Brits not to rescue them. The English were taking them but it became a how will this will impact us personally not the country but him. I’ve never heard it so callously accepted. Royal biographers question the decision all the time or at least say too bad the family was murdered.

      • Nic919 says:

Considering how they have now made the son of a KGB agent a lord in the House of Lords, they could have let them arrive as refugees. It’s not like they were that close in the line of succession.

  17. sunniside up says:

Looking at the coat dress I can’t help the feeling that it must be very thin fabric, all those pleats would create bulk around the waist and hips if it were a thick. Was she cold?

    • minnow29 says:

I’m not a fan of that coat. The color is ok, but the pleated sides of the skirt look like hotel curtains or something. I’m sure it’s just them trying to hide how skeletal she’s become…the pointy, structured shoulders, the folded yards of fabric on her hips…I’m not overweight, but if I wore that, my hips would look 3 feet wide.

    • BeanieBean says:

It does look like thin material, but other photos indicate she’s wearing a dress underneath so she is wearing layers.

  18. Interested Gawker says:

    It’s giving Darkwing Duck.

  19. Nic919 says:

The Romulan shoulder pads look dumb.
She’s also taken to wearing Melania hats with a brim so wide William can’t stand too close to her.

  20. Penelope Cowell Doe says:

Old fashioned coat, but quite pretty. Horrible hat. Horrid jewellery. Horror of a wig. She’s far too thin.

  21. DianeS says:

Kate is a beautiful girl. But she is no fashion icon. No matter where she goes, or what color she chooses, she always looks the same. Lovely but safe (boring). I actually think she shines when she’s in casual jeans and blazers.

    • QuiteContrary says:

I wouldn’t describe her as beautiful. She’s aging horribly. She used to be conventionally pretty but her heavy eye makeup, skeletal frame and toothy grin aren’t doing her any favors as she ages.

    • convict says:

It’s also funny describing Kate as a ‘girl’ when she is in midlife.

  22. Chaine says:

NGL, the anti-royal protest looks kind of fun. And what was that weird mascot that came out of the church area at the end of the video?

  23. Beverley says:

Her posture is atrocious! How hard is it to square your shoulders and stand up straight?

  24. Harla says:

Where are the Edinburgh’s? Wherever they are, their lucky to have gotten out of attending this mess.

  25. QuiteContrary says:

The event “was made a lot worse by the loud, boisterous Republic protests outside the Abbey.”

I thought the protests made the event much better! It certainly made it more interesting. We’re now at the point with the boring left-behinds that they need protests and questions about Pedrew to add news value to their appearances.

  26. Annie says:

From Reuters a month ago: “Poverty in Britain has deepened, according to a report released on Tuesday, with approximately 6.8 million people now living in “very deep poverty”, the highest level in three decades.” Nearly 1/3 of all British kids live in poverty.

But she keeps churning out brand new identical coat dresses. Utterly ignorant and tone deaf.

    • ChillinginDC says:

I still say that what will do these idiots in is the economy. No one wants to pay for this.

    • Bqm says:

They love the past, they should look to it.

In 1931 George V tightened his belt. “The principal fact is that the King’s salary, or civil list, as it is officially called, was fixed back in 1910—when nobody foresaw a world war that would just about double the cost of living—and it has not been increased by one penny since… Meantime the salaries of the army of royal servants and functionaries and the running expenses of the royal palaces and residences -which the King has to pay out of his civil list-have grown enormously…Of the $2,350,000 [$51 million today, less than half of what the sovereign grant is for 2026] making up the civil list the equivalent of $625,000 is appropriated to pay the salaries of the members of the royal household. Another $915,000 is set aside to meet the expenses of the household. A further sum of $100,000 is earmarked for the maintenance of the royal residences; $69,000 is put aside for “royal bounty”—mothers of triplets, among others, receive the royal bounty—and $40,000 is “unappropriated.” Only $550,000 remains to be paid into King George’s privy purse, and the monarch must make heavy outlays from it. The most serious of the many drains upon his privy purse is the large sum that he has to provide to make up the difference between the amounts appropriated almost thirty years ago to pay the running expenses and the salaries of the members of the royal household and the actual aggregate of those expenses and salaries today.

Up to and during the war the amounts of these appropriations were practically sufficient for their purposes. But since then they have not been nearly sufficient, and the King has been faced with very heavy deficits…However much the cost of living may have risen the King has always declined to apply to the nation for any increase…from time to time the King has been obliged to draw on his private resources…. In spite of cutting down costs wherever possible, the accounts showed a deficit in 1919 of $120,000, in 1920 of $225,000 and in 1921 of $265,000. Until the middle of 1921 the King was able to meet these deficits out of a fund that he had created for such emergencies. After that his only recourse was to draw on his capital, for he did not feel that he could ask the hard-hit British taxpayers for an increase in the civil list.

In August, 1921, the Duchy of Lancaster bill was brought before Parliament to enable the duchy- in other words the King-to realize capital to the extent of $500,000 and to use the proceeds as revenue. This meant reducing the King’s personal income from the duchy by at least $25,000 a year, but he and his advisers could see no other way out. Parliament promptly gave its assent to the bill, and thus King George tided over the worst post-war period of high prices… There are also the pensioned former officials and servants. The King and Queen maintain personally the home for aged and retired royal servants near Sandringham, and the sovereign pensions every member of the royal household staff who retires through age. These pensions and other similar provisions are increasing yearly.”

  27. tamsin says:

I think the pointed shoulders have become a Kate signature. Buttons, pleats, stacks of pocket flaps, peplums, extra seaming and darts are all features to hide her thinness. I think the coat dress suited Kate well, and from it she could really have created a “royal” style. No other woman is going to be swanning around in coat dresses unless you are mother of the bride. It is a niche style. However, that said, I think now it’s starting to look a bit old-fashioned, and Kate is dressing like royals past their expiry date. I also think that Kate is trying to introduce her five-strand pearls as part of her “signature” along with the dangly pearl earrings. They are a nice conservative accessory and has worked well for Kate.

  28. BR says:

Remember how Meghan was told/suggested/harassed into wearing neutrals only?

    • Becks1 says:

So I’ve seen this brought up here a lot lately and that’s not exactly what she said. She said she knew she shouldn’t dress in the same color as other senior royals – ie QEII, Camilla, Kate and probably Anne as well. But no one coordinated or told her what they were wearing so she had to guess what color she should wear so she stuck to neutrals bc the other royals didn’t really seem to wear neutrals like beige, cream, ivory, etc.

And then she was attacked in the press for only wearing neutrals but she would have been attacked regardless.

      • Jais says:

Which is funny. Bc now Kate wears neutrals quite a bit so that wouldn’t work anymore.

  29. Diamond Rottweiler says:

She is morphing into the Wayland Flowers’ puppet Madame. Final form nearly achieved.

  30. Elly says:

Her crazy grin seems so inappropriate.

  31. YankeeDoodles says:

I see comments occasionally predicting that they’ll downsize, restructure, winnow, slim down, trim the fat, cull the chaff, etc. and I think…. That’s what Charles was trying to do, to head off the Republic at the passe. They’ve tried it. It didn’t cut the mustard. Because it was just a superficial gesture. Call it an empty gesture. The queen ran the monarchy like a conglomerate, it was a consortium, it housed many different product lines, if you like, franchises, spin-offs, standalone enterprises, all under one roof. Charles wanted to be a boutique. But the irony is, the adjustment of the Sovereign Grant that took place under Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne — who slashed benefits for everyone in the UK, as well as local councils, government departments, social spending, capital investment, etc. — actually increased the amount of funding the royals get by orders of magnitude. Sweet, right? And that was just after a global economic meltdown. But before Covid, before the war in Ukraine, before the energy crisis and the inflationary wave, before the cost of living crunch, etc. So now the disparity between the monarchy and the people is even more dramatic and indefensible. And yet — and yet — you have fewer people doing engagements, advocating for philanthropic initiatives, and the ones leftover are palpably dreading every minute they spend with the public. I don’t think they’re going to finesse the next stage of downsizing. I think they’re heading for a real crack-up. I’m so here for it!!!!! It’s funny, when I took my oath of allegiance to become a naturalised Briton, Trump was at the tail end of his first term, and the late Queen was the head of state. And I was *so* psyched to swear allegiance to a woman who was a head of state, but just a force of nature, in general, she was so driven and stoic and committed and yet so good-humoured and decent. I cannot *imagine* feeling the same way about Charles. William? Forget it.

  32. Lala11_7 says:

The fact that she’s wearing silhouettes that would be comfortable in the 1950s…is a CONSISTENT issue because she looks like she’s cosplaying & it looks dated …

But that IS her jam…so I ❤️ that for her

  33. Sean says:

    Keep your shoes on, Kate!
And, tell Camilla to do likewise…(shudder)

  34. Inge says:

Have you guys seen dutch entry Joost in Eurovision a few years ago? Thats what the shoulderpads remind me of

Btw the Fail have an article about Kate saying hello to a photographer at the ceremony?!

  35. Miss Scarlett says:

I really like the coat dress and think it’s a good blue for her. I do not like the ha, however, because of the color. I think this is the one she wore with that navy floral monstrosity a few years ago, and the blues don’t match or even complement each other.

Her eye makeup was also especially harsh looking

Also wondering if the protestors and lack of crowd is why the BBC didnt broadcast?

  36. Kimberly says:

Perhaps one day a member of the media will ask Lazy Kate, “What work have you performed for British citizens within the past year?”

  37. BeanieBean says:

I just watched some video of the arrivals. The Gloucesters & Anne & Tim are the only royals who stopped & acknowledged the steel drum band to the left as they walk in, all the others just blew by. ‘All’ being just the POW & the K&Q. Pretty slim bunch, this time. I also heard some big, loud booing when William got out of the car. The biggest boos were reserved for Charles plus the bells had stopped ringing so you could really hear the boos & the ‘pedophile-protector’ chants.

    • Where'sMyTiara says:

This tells me all I need to know: the monarchy is already finished. They have lost the public. The BRF don’t realize it, but the apathy is more dangerous than the active hatred.

All that’s left are the mass layoffs and liquidation of assets.

Not even the most entrenched courtiers can make fetch happen at this point. No one wants William V.

When William realizes this, I believe he will have a catastrophic episode. He’s been showing signs of narcissistic collapse since his brother escaped him… it’s been a slowly evolving train wreck but the final “brick wall of reality” will be when the throne is pulled out from under him.

Virtually, realistically or literally, everything these people own was stolen from someone else. Wait til people start showing up with pitchforks. William reminds me of Shrek.

  39. Jackie says:

I got all excited that her coat dress had one black arm and a black panel on the opposite side, but no it’s just a trick of the light and it looks exactly like all her other boring coat dresses

  40. Wildrose says:

My only thought on the Wails is that the two of them look as rotten and shriveled as their souls.

  41. mightymolly says:

I’m just over 50 and still quite a bit shy of retirement, so a life of spa appointments and vacations really appeals to me on some level. But deargawd. I will NOT stand for making public appearances in dumpy dresses, silly hats, and uncomfortable heels. Nope. (But if I had those resources, I’d be focusing on causes I cared about in sleek business suits with stylish yet comfortable shoes because I know who I am – yet still enjoying the spa days.)
