In 2024, Hunter Biden was convicted of three felonies related to his drug addiction and gun-purchasing. The prosecution of Hunter Biden was malicious and politically-motivated, designed to harm the Biden family and the sitting president. When Donald Trump “won” in November 2024, he spoke openly about continuing to target Hunter. That’s when President Biden gave a full and unconditional pardon to Hunter, which was “controversial.” I was fine with the pardon then, and in retrospect, I am even more convinced that it was the right thing to do. Last year, Hunter gave an amazing interview where he called out all of the Democrats who knifed his father in the back. He spoke like a man who had no more f–ks to give. Well, as it turns out, Hunter moved abroad. Good for him.
Hunter Biden is living outside the United States just over a year after his father left the White House, his lawyer revealed in a court filing last week. His attorney, Barry Coburn, filed a 14-page document on April 6 in a civil lawsuit over unpaid legal fees that mentions, “Mr. Biden lives abroad.” Coburn declined to offer more detail when reached by PEOPLE.
It’s not clear where in the world Hunter, 56, has relocated to, but in a November 2025 podcast interview, he said he was splitting time between the U.S. and Cape Town, South Africa.
His wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, originally hails from South Africa. They had been living in California since they got married in 2019, Biden said.
“When all the all of the political and personal stuff came to an end in the last six months, I had always promised that we would spend some time over here,” Hunter said on the South Africa-based Wide Awake Podcast. “I’ve fallen madly in love with Cape Town. You guys do not know how good you have it here. It’s the most beautiful city in the world.”
Hunter also noted in that interview that most of the houses around the home he rented in Malibu, Calif., were burned down in the 2024 Palisades fire, “so we can’t go back anyway.”
President Donald Trump revoked Secret Service protection early for Hunter and his sister Ashley Biden in March 2025 because of photos taken of Hunter in South Africa, whose government Trump has falsely accused of enabling a genocide of white farmers.
“Hunter Biden has had Secret Service protection for an extended period of time, all paid for by the United States Taxpayer. There are as many as 18 people on this Detail, which is ridiculous!” Trump wrote on March 17, 2025, on his Truth Social platform. “He is currently vacationing in, of all places, South Africa, where the Human Rights of people has been strenuously questioned.”
It’s so funny – most of the Americans fleeing MAGAville have gone to England, Ireland, France or Canada. And here’s Hunter, rocking up to Cape Town and feeling completely at home in South Africa. I assume there are political reasons for why Hunter got the f–k out of Dodge too – he probably believed (correctly) that he would continue to be targeted by the Trumpers. I hope he still comes back to visit his mom and dad. Like, I hope it’s not just Ashley Biden checking in on them these days.

He was right to leave, his parents don’t have to fear for him any longer. Cape Town IS beautiful, the closest he could find to California landscape and weather, minus the earthquakes. I am sure he is in close contact with his parents.
Absolutely agreed. He may have had his issues and certainly should have been prosecuted for any ‘crimes’ committed but nothing he ever did even remotely is on the same level as business as usual in Trump’s family and his White House. Glad he is making a new life for himself elsewhere. And yes, in today’s world no one needs to be out of close contact with family and friends unless they choose to be!
Good for him for getting out. South Africa is re-working its public health care system, and already has public health care, which is something we Americans can only dream of.

Hunters kids, by his first marriage, are grown and very close to their grandparents. Same with Beau’s. Joe and Jill have a lot of people checking in.

It makes sense. His wife is South African.
My husband was born there and lived there until he was a teenager. He was a third/fourth generation South African. It is such a beautiful country. A couple of years ago we did a family trip back there. It was my first visit and the first for our children. I don’t think I’d want to live there myself (it’s just too far from my own family), but it’s remarkable.
