Duchess Meghan: ‘Every day for 10 years, I have been bullied or attacked’

Here are some photos of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in Melbourne, visiting Swinburne University of Technology. They highlighted Batyr, the university’s mental health program. They met with students and did what looks like a roundtable discussion. The exterior photos of Meghan and Harry arriving and departing from the university are wonderful – suddenly, photographers remembered how to get wide-shots of the royals!! So many young people were thrilled to see them. It’s yet another reminder that tons of regular people either see through the online Sussex hate-machine or simply aren’t paying attention to all of the negativity directed at H&M.

Per Meghan’s OneOff account, she’s wearing the Anya Dress from Friends with Frank, Wolford tights and Manolos. Her earrings are Chanel and her “Virgo” and “Leo” rings are from Logan Hollowell. She’s the Leo, and Harry is the Virgo. Meghan loves an astrological-themed piece of jewelry! In the past, she’s also worn jewelry for Gemini (for Lili) and Taurus (for Archie).

At this event, Meghan and Harry spoke to students about mental health and self-care. Meghan once again spoke about the now decade-long online hate campaign against her, and Harry spoke about how he could never live in a city.

Prince Harry hailed Australia’s social media ban as “epic” while Meghan claimed that she was “the most trolled woman in the world” on the third day of their Australian tour. The Duke and Duchess were chatting to young people working with mental health charity Batyr in Melbourne.

The Duke revealed that he could never live in a city because of the adverse effect on his mental health. “I’m not a city person,” he said. “My mental health could not take living in a city. The further out you put me, the happier I am.”

The Duchess likened “rampant” social media platforms to heroin in terms of their power of addiction, adding: “And I know.”

After talking to the teenagers in small groups at Melbourne’s Swinburne University of Technology, the Duke and Duchess sat down for a group discussion. Meghan told them: “Every day for 10 years, I have been bullied or attacked, and I was the most trolled woman in the entire world.”

She added of the social media industry: “That billion dollar industry, predicated on cruelty to get clicks, is not going to change. We have to be stronger than them.”

[From The Telegraph]

The usual suspects are already attacking Meghan for… bringing up their hate campaign against her. Like those same people haven’t been attacking Meghan and lying about Meghan for the past month over this Australian visit in particular. Like those same people haven’t built a hate industry which screams, cries and throws up every time Meghan says ANYTHING or goes outside or wears clothes or posts something on her Instagram. “How dare Meghan point out the obvious hate campaign we’ve been part of for a decade!!” PS… I see Harry rediscovered those ugly suede shoes. *deep sigh*

  1. YankeeDoodles says:

She has so much more dignity and decency than all of her haters.

    • otaku fairy says:

She really does. In some places she’s already being labelled a narcissist for making this statement, because heaven forbid someone who has experienced misogyny and racism even acknowledge how bad things get and what’s happening to them. It is very troubling how narcissism and other mental health issues are used as labels against women for either standing up for themselves, standing up for others, or rejecting traditional values. Being able to recognize the difference between when a woman is being labelled in this way for those reasons vs. when a woman is being labelled that way for actually bad behavior towards others is a survival skill women and other marginalized people need for both themselves and others.
I don’t think her statement is an exaggeration. It’s so important that we use the agency we have to not let the whole internet become a safe space for racism and misogyny. Nobody can be on all the time, but “If you see something, say something” is generally a good rule to live by.

    • Shanta says:

@YankeeDoodles….she has wayyyyyyyy more grace than me….I would have cussed EVERYBODY out years ago😆…..every day that they have someone like Meghan… They should be thankful…. Because they could have had someone like me😉

  2. Brit says:

What’s funny is that a reporter saw in real time that online and being with them in person was completely different. I think the trolls are so angry because online is not real life. They’re an echo chamber, which is why even tabloid reporters are perplexed.

    • Mei says:

I saw this too, an Australian reporter I think who was with them for like 3 days in Melbourne? Sad but true that we need to be reminded that the online world is not the real world. She will have made such impacts on people she’s spoken to in real life, those should be the important connections and aspects of humanity we celebrate that will shine over any pitiful trolling online.

And I totally agree with Harry, I always say that I like going to London for whatever I need to be there for, but I’m the most happy when I’m leaving and I feel I can breathe again. Living there, or any major city would be unfathomable for me.

    • Jais says:

Yes, not sure if it’s the same reporter, Paul, but he was being called rude online for for trying to get a selfie with Harry and Meghan but then spoke about how they were happy to do so and had been gabbing for the last 3 days. Just another example of twisting something online that doesn’t fit the reality.

  3. Dee(2) says:

Wow, that is a crowd! I’m actually pretty interested in seeing the over the top, overcompensating actions that are going to come from these Australian public reactions to them.

I figured Harry wasn’t a city guy, thinking back to his late teens and twenties in London and how every time he left it was always to go “off grid” so to speak. I remember when the media was shocked when they moved to Windsor, because they just knew they were going to be living in London and going out to dinner and private clubs all the time.

And of course they’re going to pretend that Meghan is saying something preposterous, in an article right on top of other articles such as, ” Is Meghan wrong to wear the color green?” “Meghan shows she only cares about herself by volunteering at a women’s shelter”, and
“Meghan is a hypocrite for telling people to call her Meg, but refusing to show us Archie and Lili’s faces!”

The dissonance is STRONG I’m these people.

    • windyriver says:

One of my favorite articles was the DM (I think) trying it on with “Meghan wears $35K worth of jewelry to visit a woman’s shelter!” Meaning, just her usual watch and bracelet. The article didn’t get any traction, probably because it’s glaringly obvious the only thing on her ring finger is a very slim gold band. She very obviously left her engagement ring set at home. (Too bad for the DM, they can’t tack another $300K onto the total.) And so far I don’t think I’ve seen her wear even a necklace at any of the events.

      • another cross to carry says:

Same dm lead by madam tonimey, have been swearing that the sun rises in the south and sets up north. Don’t be amazed by them.

  4. YankeeDoodles says:

This is to @Brit, I honestly think they end up believing half of what they write and half of what their colleagues write. There was a famous experiment — I think in the US — wherein two political candidates were given speeches to read, in parallel races, that skewed respectively right and left, compared to their respective starting positions. And lo and behold, by the end of the campaign, the candidate given left-leaning speeches was — off script — leaning left, decidedly, and the candidate given right-leaning speeches, relative to his starting positions, was leaning further right. I mean — give someone a script, it’s like method acting. They start to believe what they’re forced to say.

    • Brit says:

@yankeedoodles. 100%. I do think a psychosis has completely taken over some of the people in media because Harry and Meghan stood up for themselves and they have no control or power over them. There’s an entitlement regarding these two from others. I think they’re perplexed also because the hubris of the press and trolls is massive. They believe they have power to control the narrative and when the population don’t care, it terrifies them. But the press also know that when the Sussexes left and when the Queen died, interest went with them. So you have anger, jealously, bitterness and loss of revenue. Its making them deranged.

  5. Tessa says:

And Meghan always touches and grabs harry. The derangers say. That must really bother them

  6. Monika says:

Shocking! Meghan wore a mini dress, breaking royal protpcol. We just learned why Kate can ot take off her coat indoors and that royal women should wear knee length skirts or dresses. At least Meghan wore tights. Just kidding. Meghan hss gorgeous legs.

    • Jais says:

I loved Megan in this shift dress with tights! Idk this outfit just really worked for me.

      • Monika says:

Yes, it was a gorgeous dress and it suited Meghan very well, the colour and the shape. And Meghan has lovely legs.

      • LauraD says:

Same here. May I say (not in a shy way) that for once Meghan is copying me! 😆 I have a dress very similar to that one BUT it’s nowhere near as expensive and I don’t look half as good. However, I’ll take it as a win.

What’s great about Meghan’s fashion is that we can all find cheaper copies of what she’s wearing. It was the same with Diana for the most part (like Meghan) her fashion was relatable AND obtainable.

On a more serious note. It is to our eternal shame that our BRF and their media attack dogs hounded that poor woman out of the country. Even now they find ways to attack her and her children. But as soon as she reminds them of how horrible they were (and still are) to her they act all “it weren’t me gov”

      • jais says:

As a short person with short legs, I have always had extreme leg envy with Meghan. To have been born with longs, sigh. Oh well.

      • QuiteContrary says:

I love this outfit, too. Her legs!

(This is a look that Kate will not be able to copy.)

      • M says:

Such a cute outfit, and I normally hate tights on people.

    • 2131Jan says:

I love this length, or knee length on her SO much better than the maxi looks she wore. Too much material, like in her green outfit (big jacket, long to the ankle skirt) just overwhelmed her. It’s not that she’s too short (she’s 5’5″ or 5’6″), but she’s small boned. This dress is fun, cute, and perfect for her. Gives me a 60’s vibe, with the A line mini an the matching tights 😊 She looks gorgeous!

  7. Me at home says:

I’m glad she’s speaking out about this. It’s 100% true. I want to think those rapturous crowds are evidence that most people are seeing through the few thousand online bullies and trolls.

Of course, she hasn’t even mentioned the BRF (who have undeniably been part of the hate campaign), but it’s the royalists who will be outraged by the fact that she even mentions being bullied.

  8. Hypocrisy says:

The BRF thinks they can target someone for ten years and make their lives miserable is okay but talking about what happened to you because of them should never be mentioned.. I can’t imagine the strength Meghan has to survive this.. I’m definitely in awe of her.

  9. Jais says:

How dare Meghan talk about being trolled online…when she is constantly trolled online and trolls make their entire living off of her. Please. GMAFB.

    • Becks1 says:

Yeah I saw a few articles about this on social media and the first flurry of responses were all super negative (“is it trolling or criticism? she wouldn’t be trolled if she weren’t awful” etc etc) and then the responses came up about how “these comments just prove her point.” and they do. It’s not enough for them to constantly attack Meghan for attention, for money, for clicks, whatever. she’s also not allowed to point it out.

    • Nic919 says:

And it’s not even just her but anyone who supports her. Patrick Adams posted a picture of the jam sent to him by Meghan after he did a podcast and said he hadn’t gotten any. Meghan replied on the IG post of that clip that jam was on the way.
The responses on Patrick’s post with the jam were a mix of funny comments but also so much nasty irrelevant stuff just bashing Meghan. And if you look at Patrick’s other IG posts that don’t reference Meghan, they don’t have the negative traffic.

It is absolutely insane the way Meghan is targeted.

  10. Teddy says:

I always imagine how Harry feels about their home in Montecito, The grounds are like a storybook, the colors and scents and views are Southern California vibrant. He must look at Meg and his kids and the freedom in his his life and just marvel that this part includes such good fortune.

  11. Chrissie T says:

Harry’s comments on not wanting city life are interesting considering the original plan was for him to live in the big apartment in Kensington Palace with all the palace staff reporting on him daily to the DM and the Sun.

    • Becks1 says:

I’m sure that’s a big part of why he loves their house. No one is tattling on him, he’s not worried about the staff working for someone else running to his brother or father about him, his kids have acres and acres to run around and play with no intrusion. It’s probably something he didn’t realize he would love as much as he does until he had it.

  12. MsIam says:

I’m glad that Meghan said something. The trolls even went after the mother of one of the kids at the children’s hospital because Meghan was knelt down to speak with her child.

    • QuiteContrary says:

      That is horrific. And soulless.

    • Swaz says:

I’m glad she spoke up about this madness. I don’t know if I could survive this on a daily basis for ten years. It also surprises me that people can have the same conversation everyday for ten years 🥸

  13. The pearl clutchers are pissed because Meg spoke the truth and we all know how they feel about the truth being spoken. They can’t control her so they try to hurt her in anyway that they can! They hate rejection and she rejected their narrative and control so now we have this hate campaign!!

  14. Neeve says:

I remember the ‘missing’ Kate months where there was some memes and jokes and the BM were like oh leave her alone, Kate couldn’t deal with a little negativity for a few weeks, what would be have done if they never left her alone!?

  15. YankeeDoodles says:

This is to @Brit, I completely share your feelings! and i wonder, truly, how much of this is political. Dreaded word. But the tabloids here have been accustomed to dictating the course of events, like a booing crowd at a roman gladiatorial arena, off with their heads, etc. and the tabloids have a delirium of power. I remember reading about the Sun headline when Blair (or was it Major) won one election, trumpeting their own influence, the headline actually read, in bold caps, “It Was the Sun Wot Won It,” which is bonkers to me, to mock their readers with faux-Cockney slang, but it’s the means of appeasing the mob and keeping it riled up. It’s populist, and ugly.

  16. Brassy Rebel says:

I think Meghan will have to fight MVP Harris for the title of “Most Trolled and Attacked” woman in the world but certainly they are the top two. As MVP says, “People will hate you; they don’t know you but they hate you.” At Rev. Al Sharpton’s NAN convention last week, Harris expressed approval of the verdict in the Meta and Google verdicts and alarm at her fear that the tech companies don’t plan to change the way they operate because they have figured out the most profitable algorithms. She and Sharpton talked about Australia and the progress they have made on this issue and she even has spoken to the government minister who has been responsible for the changes. Video is on YouTube for anyone interested.

    • OriginalMich says:

Harris wasn’t trolled globally. The attacks didn’t spawn cottage hate businesses. It was time limited. There is no comparison to what Meghan has been put through.

      • maisie says:

actually the only person I can think of who has endured what Meghan has is Yoko Ono.

      • Irisrose says:

Whatever Ono went through was pre-social media. Essentially nothing near what Meghan has endured.

    • Pumpkin says:

I don’t think there’s any need to play suffering or oppression olympics here. Both woman have been and are subjected to relentless media attacks which is awful on its own.

No need to go “actually one suffered more”.

      • Duch says:

It’s not an Olympics but I do think it adds a lot of context to what Meghan has to wake up and combat every day for 10 years. And not in a small way but in a headline way. Again every day. For 10 years.

I don’t think I can think of a single person, M or F, who’s had the intensity and duration of such a campaign. I’m even thinking about politicians and can’t think of anyone who for every day for 10 years had headlines. Not even Obama or Clinton or Trump. Or even Diana, given there was not the social media machine.

It’s unprecedented. It’s historical in proportion. It’s her life, she rightly raised it, and I don’t want to brush it aside.

      • Pumpkin says:

@Duch: I’m not criticising Meghan’s comments or saying she’s wrong or whatever.

I’m referring to the commenter above going “well actually Harris had it worse”.

*That* is playing oppression olympics. Not what Meghan said.

    • NorthernLights says:

Interestingly enough, Meghan did not say I AM the most trolled person in the world. She said she WAS. That time period was in 2019 which she’s made reference to in the past. And she was told she was at the time, not something she made up on her own.

      • S says:

I believe she was the more trolled person. There’s plenty of data to back it up. Even now, you only need to look at some of the more disgusting subreddits to see how horrific the trolling was and is

    • Magdalena says:

This is not the first time that Meghan has mentioned that she was the most trolled woman in the world, and the usual suspects spent days clutching their pearls about it at the time. There was an actual scientific study which pointed this out and she referred to it at the time. She is not saying “I *think* I was” – she is stating a verifiable fact. Vice President Harris is massively trolled, yes, but it has not been *worldwide*, nor has it been as unhinged and sustained as it has been for Meghan.

There is NO billion-dollar industry monetising hate against Kamala Harris, orchestrated by a powerful, centuries-old royal family and global media (UK media and their international affiliates) as there is against Meghan and her children. Global media attach Meghan’s photo and insert her name into articles which have NOTHING to do with her every single day, and the more negative the connotations, the better for their bank balances.

Not to minimise Kamala’s suffering, but there is no comparison here. The two are not the same.

  17. jais says:

It must’ve been nice for Harry to be able to discuss Australia’s new media ban which he calls epic. I’m not clear on the details and how it will work but I’m intrigued.

  18. Judy says:

Meghan reciting the saying from a friend about “My wish for you is that you continue…” makes me cry every time I watch it. I dislike the BRF and press so very much for putting such a lovely person through this cruelty every single day. They did this to Princess Diana and they’re doing it again to Princess Meghan. This is so not acceptable and there’s little I can do about the larger problem except wish for karma to strike hard on all the BRF and press who do this.

  19. Amy Bee says:

It’s really interesting what Harry has said about not wanting to live in a city. The press has placed the blame on Meghan for them first moving to Windsor and then moving to Montecito when it was Harry’s desire all along. I’ve already seen Charlotte Griffiths complaining about Meghan’s comments but it’s the truth and if she her colleagues want to prove Meghan wrong they would stop talking about and stalking her. Charlotte Griffiths has the gumption to be talking about Harry and Meghan after we all found out that she tried to insinuate herself into Harry’s life.

    • jais says:

Charlotte Griffiths speaking words, after being outed as a weirdo stalker in court, is next-level audacity. These white women stalkers need to keep Meghan’s name out of their mouths. But they won’t bc they’re entitled af.

    • Swaz says:

There is a podcast or some type of platform, Palace Confidential or something I see on YouTube that talks about HARRY AND MEGHAN 365 DAYS 💰🤣🤣

  20. QuiteContrary says:

“My wish for all of you is to just continue …”

    That is so beautiful.

Meghan surely knew she’d be attacked again for talking about the cruelty to which she’s been subjected. And she did it anyway, to convey to those young people that they can survive online trolling. She’s as brave as Harry.

    • Carmen says:

Somewhere along the way, this has to be taking a toll. I hope at some point they will allow her some peace.
I know every now an then, I send a prayer up for Meghan, Harry and their babies.

    • Unblinkered says:

      Same here.
Over the years, I’ve prayed to every god in the heavens to send her strength.

  21. Mightymolly says:

I love how honest and vulnerable they’re being. They’re amazing role models.

My husband prefers a quieter small town life while I’m a city girl. Our compromise is a smaller city in a larger urban area. We have fresh air and space for long walks. But also access to city culture nearby. But I guess we know now that H & M have no plans to move to LA, as has been speculated.

  22. Harla says:

I love that Meg is wearing a short dress. No prissy, frigid Victorian cosplay for her!!!

    • Mightymolly says:

That dress is fantastic. I would love to order a down market version (and would totally use an affiliate link for a version that costs less than $100!)

      • Irisrose says:

Closest I’m finding are on Etsy. Search for linen tank mini dress, sleeveless tank mini dress, sleeveless linen slip dress.

@Kaiser does etsy have an affiliates shopping program you could use?

    • Caitlin says:

Haha you beat me to it. Came on here to say pretty much the same thing – much prefer Meghan’s tasteful, modern look to Kate’s dated, old lady fashion fails. Ironically, isn’t Kate the one with the stylist?

      • Unblinkered says:

KM looks like she’s styled by her mother, a woman in her 70s, whilst Meghan I’d say just has good natural taste. I’d very happily wear Meghan’s clothes.

  23. JenCF says:

The Brit crash out continues. She is absolutely correct on all fronts and dropping it so directly is deliciously devastating. Calling attention to the multimillion industry of hate? She might as well have flipped them the double bird. Good on her.

  24. Elly says:

Harry and Meghan must be such a strong support for each other. They both have experienced the intense trolling. I’m sure that now they have loyal assistants who screen social media and only pass on the important stuff so H&M can focus on being productive. I always think of the classic fairytale of the nasty troll living under the bridge being defeated by the smart goats.

  25. MikeB says:

You just have to see the vile comments about her visit to the childrens hospital in Melbourne where she is accused of exploiting the children. The fact that Harry was there also is overlooked.

    • MelodyM says:

What bools**t! She used her platform to bring attention to the children and the hospital. Something W&K could easily do if they actually gave it a try.

  26. Over it says:

My heart breaks for Meghan . What she has to endure is something I won’t wish on my worst enemy. This woman is supposed to take it and these vile hateful people think that she has no right to complain about the abuse. It’s as if they don’t see her as a human being. I pray for peace for her and I hope the hate campaign ends soon

  27. Shiela Kerr says:

    Very true statement from Meghan.

  28. fwiw says:

I saw somewhere, maybe reddit, that H&M are receiving no appearance fees while in Australia — not for the speech or the cooking show or the retreat. If so, claiming they are is yet another attack.

    • Lamb Chop says:

I don’t think that’s correct. The retreat, maybe. The speech was meant to be a paid gig. I’d be horrified if she wasn’t pad from masterchef. They get paid high profile people all the time. Jamie Oliver, Nutella and Gordon R don’t do it for free, they make bank out of the guest judges so im sure she’ll be paid. As she should be.

  29. Anare says:

Ok, not going to lie, I am blinking back tears here. That is such a heartfelt message. She speaks it quietly but it resonates so loudly. Phew! 😭

  30. MikeB says:

On any day there will be dozens of stories in the UK media bullying Meghan, on TV shows panels will discuss her latest moves, and then a whole range of particularly odius people will post videos on social media platforms. This is every day without fail, as Meghan says for ten years.
Many stories are based upon claims, that have no evidence of truth, supplied by so-called experts. Based upon claims stories will use words like humiliated, savaged, mocked, blasted, skewered, slammed, torn apart, snubbed, accused of something, Meghan is accused of not being relatable, being disliked or hated, is embarrassing, is a hypocript, has ulterior motives, is fake, sparks fury, is plotting something, is calculating. Opinions are passed on Netflix and As Ever by people who have no knowledge of what is going on. Every gesture is analyzed by a bevy of on call body language experts. Every decision is analyzed by a host of PR experts who are unaware of the reasons of those decisions. Then there are the revelations from those who don’t know Meghan and have never met her but if they have something to say the UK media is ready to make up a story about it.
To the UK media I challenge you to show me a day where you have not produced a story that hasn’t attacked Meghan for some alleged transgression.
