Hugh Jackman & Sutton Foster looked loved up at ‘The Sheep Detectives’ premiere

Hugh Jackman’s new movie, The Sheep Detectives, comes out on May 8. The movie’s New York City premiere was this past Sunday. Hugh was there with Sutton Foster, and they walked the red carpet in coordinated outfits. Sutton wore an ankle-length sequin dress by Markarian. (Note by CB: Here’s a similar sequin gown from Cynthia Rowley. It’s still pricey but it’s a fraction of the cost. Trina Turk has a similar look in separate tank and skirt or a mini dress.) Hugh wore a blue-gray suit that complemented Sutton’s dress. This is their first red carpet together since the one for Song Sung Blue last year, and they looked very loved up. Here’s a little more on the movie and another recent outing they had:

Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster are having another date night in New York City.

On Sunday, April 19, Jackman, 57, and Foster, 51, stepped out together on the red carpet in N.Y.C. for the premiere of Jackman’s new movie The Sheep Detectives. Jackman, who plays a shepherd whose murder must be solved by his mystery novel-loving flock of sheep, wore an all-teal suit for the occasion as he placed his arm around Foster, whom he has been romantically linked to since January 2025.

The pair’s red carpet appearance together comes just five days after PEOPLE premiered exclusive backstage photos of Jackman and Foster posing with members of the company of CATS: The Jellicle Ball at the Broadhurst Theatre on Tuesday, April 14.

Jackman’s new movie sees the star portray a shepherd named George in a small English town who reads murder mystery novels to his flock of sheep every night. When George himself is found dead, the sheep (voiced by Julia Louis- Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Brett Goldstein and more) resolve to help the town’s bumbling police officer (Nicholas Braun) solve the crime and investigate a series of local suspects.

I wanted to talk about Hugh and Sutton’s red carpet appearance because I am obsessed with her dress. I suspect this will be a controversial opinion, so let me make my case! It’s pink, covered in rainbow sequins, and yet somehow not twee. I also love her matching shoes. It reminds me of Natalie Portman’s incredible Dior gown from the 2024 Golden Globes. What can I say? I’m a sucker for sparkly dresses in general. In Style described it as “Lisa Frank-coded” and that may be why I dig it so much. Their red carpet style here is subtle instead of screaming ”We’re a couple that coordinates!”

Also, I really want to see The Sheep Detectives. The trailer is so dang charming and regardless of how you feel about Jackman – and he’s problematic, for sure – that cast is insane! Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Regina Hall, and Roy Kent Brett Goldstein playing animated sheep that solve Jackman’s character’s murder by using what they’ve learned from being read murder novels?! What is this, Murder, She Wrote for sheep? Sign me the f-ck up.

I was about to ask in what universe was his suit teal but apparently it’s in the universe of the very last photo.

Everyone should read the book too. It’s so good. I’m really looking forward to seeing this.

    • Alo says:

The book is “Three Bags Full” by Leonie Swann, and it’s a great read. I don’t even think you need to particularly be a mystery fan, it’s more like a character study. I am so excited for the book because the trailer makes it seem like they did the quirky conceit justice!

  3. Tuesday says:

I don’t like it. It doesn’t look twee, but it doesn’t look good, either.

  4. Josephine says:

He looks . . . different. Is it the hair? Too much botox? He’s just thinner now? There is something about them as a couple that seems off, but you never can tell with relationships. Movie looks cute, could have done without him in the cast.

    • Normades says:

In motion they just looked so performative and extra….look how happy we are!!! Weeee!!!!

    • Beckett says:

It’s the hair! Too dark and uniform in colour for his mature face.
A little bit of blending would help to break up the mass of unrealistic dark hair.

Anyway, they give me the ick…

I get why you like the dress, @Rosie.

It’s a feminine color, but a very plain, almost severe cut, which flatters Sutton’s dancer’s body.

It’s a colorful pattern, but not dainty little flowers or whatnot, it’s more abstract. And it’s not a full rainbow print, it’s a spectrum, from pink through purples to blues, a bit of green, some yellow reflected from the lights, I think. No red or orange.

The shoes pick up the pink in a nice soft shade, but have an interesting sharp, angular shape.

It’s walking several fine lines, and doing it beautifully.
