Sykes: Footage of Duchess Meghan looking at a staffer proves that she’s a bully

Last year, something really revealing happened because of the Duchess of Sussex’s With Love, Meghan series. In the first season, Meghan hosted Mindy Kaling as a guest, and on camera, Mindy called Meghan by her maiden name. Meghan gently corrected her, saying “I’m Sussex now.” The reaction to Meghan correcting someone or “Meghan stating a preference” was incredible to watch in real time. The Daily Mail and many royal reporters zeroed in on that moment and argued that it “proved” that Meghan is a “bully,” which has been the palace and royal ecosystem’s deranged claim for years. They screamed and cried that Meghan had actually been rude to Mindy, or that Meghan behaved inappropriately to Mindy by stating her name preference. It was a real aha moment for me – “oooooh, they were climbing up Meghan’s ass this whole time because she stated preferences or corrected them.”

Well, don’t forget the other accusation lodged against Meghan for years – that she looked at people. Specifically, she looked at people and the power of her bullying gaze sent Kensington Palace staffers running to the closet to scream and cry. “Meghan looking at someone” = bullying, according to royalists, royal sources and Jason Knauf. Well, all of this has been recycled because there’s manipulated/AI footage of Meghan looking at a staffer in Australia. Seriously. As you can imagine, Tom Sykes was on the case!

Former employees of Meghan Markle have revealed the nightmarish conditions of working under her. A video of Markle during a trip to Australia racked up thousands of views on social media this week, as the mother of two appears to give Prince Harry’s chief of staff, Sarah Fosmo, a deathly glare for touching the Duke of Sussex.

On The Daily Beast’s The Royalist podcast, Tom Sykes revealed Tuesday that former staffers told him the clip “revived memories” of their “traumatic” employment under Markle, 44.

“Another former employee told me, ‘It gives me PTSD,’” Sykes, who has covered the royal family for decades, recalled. “This is what they said after watching the clip: ‘It’s classic Meghan… smiling to the public on one side of her face and glowering at you on the secret side where she thinks she is unobserved.’ The woman treats anyone she has power over as totally disposable. You are just treated like a tradesman who is there to fix the toilet.”

For years, reporting from outlets including the Daily Beast has recounted testimonies from the former actress’s staffers. Several former employees told the Beast that Markle was a “demon” boss prone to “psycho moments.”

In 2025, a Vanity Fair report alleged that some of Markle’s American staffers needed therapy after working for her. Before that, sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Markle was a “dictator in high heels.”

Sykes said representatives for the Sussexes alleged that the video, which had been slowed down for dramatic effect, was “designed to be manipulative and perpetuate a false narrative.” The Daily Beast has reached out to Markle’s representatives for further comment.

[From The Daily Beast]

All of these people should be embarrassed. To base all of these wailing and whining about “how Meghan treats staffers” and their evidence is… Meghan looking at a staffer in a crowded room, in a short video clip which was manipulated to change her expressions and make her look bad. The full video even reveals why the staffer touched Harry’s back – Sarah Fosmo was drawing his attention to the hundreds of people on the balconies of the Australian hospital, so that he could wave to them too. Meghan was clearly looking at Fosmo because Meghan was listening to what she said!! So, yeah, this is what it always was. This is what all of those bullying claims amounted to. In the past thirteen months or so, we’ve finally gotten our answer. Meghan “bullied” palace staffers by stating preferences, correcting them and looking at them when they spoke.

Why aren’t people exhausted by this? I’m an American and I find this whole thing tiresome. Do the Brits feel the same?

    • ICorrine says:

These articles generate traffic and the tabloids don’t care if you like Harry & Meghan or loathe them. What surprises me is why Sussex fans continue to get upset. How many Sykes’ stories can one read in a week before tapping out and moving on to something else? First hand is bad enough but second and third hand is exhausting.

    • Tottie Bee says:

The loud, low-class, tabloid believing Brits are like vipers, latching onto anything negative the trash press can provide. They’re sickening, and the comments are worse. The tabloids literally cater to the “Hate H&M” crowd, and feed them so much shíť on H&M daily, pretending Australia hates them, when it’s clear they don’t. It’s only Daily Mail Australia staff who are slamming them. Sickening.

  2. Brit says:

😂😂😂 Bitter, Bitter, Bitter. Tom Skyes lost the plot a long time ago. The only way he and the press can make money now is by embracing trolls and derangement on YouTube and Substack. I love that for them. The Sussexes leaving destroyed a lot of things but it seems that the rota and commentators have gone off the deep end since 2020. The full psychosis that has taken a hold of the British press is troubling but of their own making.

    • Megan says:

Skyes clearly has no respect for the tradesman who fixes his toilet. I guess the people who keep his life running are beneath him.

    • ELX says:

You cannot get away from the blatant racism. They can’t bear the thought that if they ever actually met the Duchess they might have to bow or curtsy and call a black woman ma’am. Even referring to her as just “Markle” is aggressively racist. In the old style manuals of not that long ago, journalists signaled that someone was black or a felon by denying the individual the courtesy of Mr., Mrs. or Miss. They can’t stand the fact that she’s an HRH and a Duchess.

  3. Jane says:

I have worked as a PA to psychiatrists for years, some of them really powerful and amazing women at the top of their game. I have never been able to get to grips with the pressure they work under and people’s expectations of them (which are different because of their gender). I would love to have a month working for Meghan, I think she can give a unique and valuable perspective on a situation which no one else on this planet has experienced and some great lessons in leadership. all of this is misogynistic nonsense, Charles basically chucked a fountain pen at his staff and it was treated as a joke. the difference between women have to put up with and men (in all arenas) really pisses me off.

    • Gloriana says:

You bring up a great example of what is accepted from men vs. what is imagined from a black woman. We need to have more conversations around this.

    • Nerd says:

That’s is very true but it isn’t just Charles who has exhibited mean behavior and facial expressions. I’ve seen more photos of Kate giving mean and glaring looks at people, from Meghan, Harry and even William at church. Surely everyone remembers the glaring look she gave Meghan at church on the Sussexes last Commonwealth Day or during the Queen’s Jubilee when Harry and Meghan walked into the church before Will and Kate and she strained her neck and worded something that looked very mean and inappropriate for the location. But Kate is white so it’s okay with these people. Plus it was towards a WOC, so extra points, I guess for Kate.

      • Mama Reads says:

100%, Kate’s response to Meghan waving hello in the church was cruel. I have had no doubt about how shitty H & M were treated by the BRF after Kate made that face while being broadcast to the world.

  4. 1stTimer says:

“You are just treated like a tradesman who is there to fix the toilet”
So courtiers think they are more deserving and better than people that fix toilets? Toilet fixing people are doing a true and honest job and should be respected, not like those despicable palace rats

    • Graphinya Heather says:

The courtiers are useless lol. A tradesman (or woman) know they are hired for a job and show up to complete it. The courtiers show up and do nothing. That might be why they felt Meghan was a “bully” or a “nightmare.” She had the audacity to expect that if you were on the payroll you would actually do your job. The horror!

  5. Eurydice says:

I don’t understand how this is a job. When Sykes was little, did he say “Mummy, Daddy, when I grow up I want to work in the basement of the internet, harassing and inventing lies about one specific WOC…for 10 years.” (That’s supposing he was actually born of humans and didn’t just rise up out of a stagnant pool.)

    • Brit says:

To me it shows how the mighty have fallen. You have these people having to go to YouTube, Substack for money. They have nothing of substance to cover with the left behinds because I’m sure everyone looked at that picture family yesterday and just cringed by how boring and bland it was. I think many in the press are over all of this and want things to go back to 2016-20, when they felt they were on top for the world.

    • Me at home says:

@Brit is right. Sykes has few or no contacts left since he was kicked out of the rota last August. Doesn’t he live in Ireland? He probably has nothing but tips from his sister Plum when she attends posh dinner parties. And, he makes cr@p up.

But haters on Substack will pay for his garbage, and even the hate bots have to pay to subscribe, so here we are.

      • Eurydice says:

Sane people with self-esteem would pivot, take some time off, find something else to do. How degrading to be digging for scraps from derangers.

  6. Mads says:

He’s gone full anti-Sussex troll and does livestreams with a couple of others on the same grift – one of them, Paula Froelich, is awful and I actually reported one of her Instagram posts where she compared Meghan’s blue and white striped shirt to the “Auschwitz” look.

  7. Noodle says:

Maybe my experiences with dirty looks differs from the press, but that is not what I would consider a glare. Her mouth tightens a bit, but she’s not giving a dirty look. Maybe she was surprised by the woman’s approach or was observing the situation. I just don’t think that look deserves more power than the millions of smiles she poured into those days.

    • Lara (the other) says:

I could not find a glare in the video as well.
She has a broad smile for the audience, and turns to the person trying to get Harry attention with a perfectly friendly expression to see what she wants.
I think it would have been inappropiate and unnatural (for reference see kates gurning), if she would have keept smiling broadly while trying to find out, whats the matter.
And the photo is obviously photoshopped.

    • Magdalena says:

The “mouth tightening” is AI editing. And Kaiser already explained the clear context which was seen in the full, unedited video.

      • Nicole says:

They stay photoshopping these mean looking expressions onto her face. They want her to be ugly, mean, and lip-less sooooo badddd like their OSHA violating, failed health inspection ass rotting left behind Windsors. All the AI in the world can’t make Meghan look anything other than the ethereal beauty she is (I know ethereal is dramatic, but she is just one gorgeous woman!)

    • Becks1 says:

LOL right?? I kept watching it waiting for the glare, it just looks like she stopped smiling for a split second, but her face still looks very calm, like she’s just listening to the woman like Kaiser said.

In general, i’m wary of photos that people say “show X person grimacing” or glaring or whatever. Here we have a video yes but its obviously been edited and its a very short clip. I cant find the full clip on the DM page that Kaiser linked but that’s fine because there’s nothing in the short video to begin with. (and this is why for years I gave Kate’s expressions a pass because in one split second everyone can look a little over excited or whatever. But we have enough video evidence of her to know that its all intentional.)

If that expression on Meghan’s face is sending people to therapy……lordy what do they do when William has a tantrum.

  8. Dee(2) says:

Uhh, is the photo in the DM tweet supposed to be the glare? Ok.

I mean it tracks, that they would think that that is a glare. Like they also think that it’s bullying for your boss to be upset that you were assigned a project and didn’t complete it. Or that’s your boss emailed you, and the expectation that you were there to work. And held you to standards.

And to be fair in the beginning some of it could have just been cultural. I’m very direct, and I have worked with International teams before and have found myself frustrated with what I see as the inability to just get to the point sometimes, but I’m sure they found my forthrightness abrasive at times.

But none of this looks like that. It looks like her turning to listen to what the person is saying, and because they see everything that Meghan does in the lens of it’s evil, so let’s double back to make this interaction evil.

I said this earlier this year, but I don’t know I feel like there’s a sense of boredom sinking in for a lot of people. Not necessarily in anything that Harry and Meghan are doing, but just in the constant over the top nature of, they are Snidely whiplash-esque villains. There may be a lot of people who will never be outright Sussex fans, but I think a lot of people have started to realize this is ridiculous.

    • Becks1 says:

I do think there could be a cultural or personality clash at play here. My family is not direct, we’re very passive aggressive (unless we’re fighting lol which we do a lot even as adults) and we just don’t really speak directly about what we want or need or what’s on our minds.

A friend of mine in college was super direct and it threw me off. She was nice, but it took me a while to adjust to her personality because I wasn’t used to someone saying “Becks, that interaction just now made me uncomfortable. Am I missing something here?” or “I have plans to do this and I’m sticking with those plans. You can join me or not, its up to you, I’m not mad if you don’t” and she literally meant that (I was used to people being like “its up to you….” when it really wasnt, you know?)

I feel like Meghan is probably very direct but very polite and nice. And she works. I feel like the KP staff was just not used to that. They probably would have preferred it if she popped in once a month, threw some thing, screamed, and then left again for another month, which I’m sure is what William and Kate do.

      • 1stTimer says:

That is also what happened to me (Eastern European here) when speaking to some Americans. I was taken aback and thought they were rude, but they were just super direct. After consideration, I decided there is nothing to be offended for but for that you need some introspection and self awareness.

  9. Miranda says:

And right after that photo was taken, Meghan telekinetically sealed all the exits, the other guests were attacked by a firehose, and that staffer burst into flames.

    • kirk says:

I love the way Meghan has the power to blur her face in that photo. The people in front of her and behind her are more in focus than she is. Just magic! 🙄

      • Agreatreckoning says:

Meghan needs to teach me that magic trick! Blur me out and focus on everyone else.lol Curious, isn’t Sarah chief of staff for both Harry & Meghan? Might be wrong. Interesting how the BM/BM affiliated media like to say things like, ‘Meghan’s PR team and ‘Harry’s chief of staff’. Separating most things between H&M. There are separate situations/jobs. Don’t know if this is actually one of them? Sykes can suck it either way.

One thing I’m absolutely sure of-ageing does not equate wisdom. RR’s and their ilk are proof.

  10. anniefannie says:

This could be true and so what?!? I worked for a training organization and had an extremely exacting, highly intelligent, intuitive boss ( woman) I knew I’d always have to be on my toes and deliver my best. She stepped up my game and I’ll be forever grateful. I faced a lot of misogyny later in my career w/bosses that never measured up to her and knew exactly how to handle them because of her. What happened to “ Keep calm and carry on!” This whole article screams “ I’m wilting flower and not ready for the NFL!”

  11. jais says:

Okaaay. This is sad and insane that they’re going to these lengths to prove she’s a bully by doctoring photos. And from what I can tell, even then, she’s still just looking at somebody. Meghan worked on a set for years with PAs and other crew members. Believe me, if there were stories to tell about her being a bully, then they would have come out by now. Her all of the sudden being called a bully after working at KP is no coincidence. The same KP that employed people who doctored email evidence in the courts to try and make Meghan look bad. Please.

  12. Teddy says:

I fully expected they were obsessing over a fleeting micro-expression of mild annoyance but there’s not even that — it’s Meghan switching from a wide, scanning gaze to one-on-one contact with a person she didn’t realize was next to her. Literally a normal 1.5 second reaction. The depth of hatred in these people is frightening.

    • Agreatreckoning says:

Reminds me of Camilla Tominey’s “smoking gun” comment around Meghan’s case against the Fail. Fizzle out, poop slice.

  13. `Shiela kerr says:

Those gutter rats want a gotcha moment from Meghan so badly until they look at changes in expressions as such. Pathetic rats.

  14. Sherry says:

OMG, come on. Slowing down footage to make it look like she glared? This has just gone way too far.

  15. Inge says:

It always amazes me that they have to go frame by frame to find something they can spin as negative, whilst for W&K they go frame by frame to look for something they can present as a “loving glance’

Not unsimelar to derangers photoshopping Meghan to make her look ugly, but think we photoshop Kate when we share unedited pics

  16. FancyPants says:

That picture is not from the original video on the Daily Beast website. In the DB video, she isn’t even looking at the staffer- she does slowly drop her smile but doesn’t even frown, she just kind of stares off into the distance like she just remembered she forgot to turn the oven off. Total nothingburger, which must be why they had to edit this image.

    • L4Frimaire says:

It could just be a minute of fatigue or just lost in the moment. The fact is Meghan can never have a range of emotions and always has to be calm and receptive, otherwise they go after her. If she shows a frown or neutral expression, or RBF, she’s angry at someone and is a bully. If Harry frowns or shows a neutral expression, he’s unhappy, wants to divorce and needs to return to the UK. They analyze every microsecond like it’s the Zapruder film and construct a whole narrative. This is the same old nonsense.

  17. LaurenAPMT says:

Honestly, it looked like more of a protective thing to me. I’m sure they’re “used to” having all sorts of crazies trying to touch them and have to be on the alert.

  18. L4Frimaire says:

This is nonsense and AI manipulation. They’ve used this playbook too many times. Sykes has been going off the rails for months now. The Australian tour really humbled the UK press. I don’t believe for one minute those KP clowns.

  19. MikeB says:

From 10,000 miles away the writer determined that it was a ‘tense moment’, what a load of journalistic rubbish. Then the writer follows up with “appears to GLARE”, no Meghan’s look is concern.

  20. QuiteContrary says:

Black women in leadership positions must be exhausted. The angry Black woman trope is used over and over and over again to undermine them.

See Obama, Michelle. And Sussex, Meghan.

  21. bisynaptic says:

Imagine the time, effort, and attention it takes people to come up with this stuff.

  22. Amy Bee says:

This is embarrassing and reveals these people’s white fragility and racism.

  23. YankeeDoodles says:

There’s a great columnist for the Spectator (which has a number of genuinely racist and deplorable pale male stale columnists) called Rory Sutherland, who makes up for the rest of them. He’s the reason I kept my subscription. He advises a technique of inversion when pondering inanity. So, take the opposite tack: assume she’s seething and furious. Look how well she contains it!!!! I mean. The photo only proves what you want it to prove. If you’ve already decided she’s a bully, you’ll scan everything through that lens. People see what they want to see, and you can’t stop them. The best thing Meghan ever did, was to leave the U.K. They’re past help.

  24. MsIam says:

If Meghan was such a bully, there would be lawsuits flying everywhere, especially here in the US. Not just anonymous comments to gossip writers like Tom Sucks and his ilk. Look at that Kylie Jenner story and she’s not even the one being accused of bullying. All of the people that have made public statements about working with the Sussexes have been complementary, unless it’s people with an agenda like Jason Knife. And considering people have accused senior royals of physical attacks, it’s ridiculous to bitch that Meghan looking at someone is somehow traumatizing.

  25. Nerd says:

This is a perfect example of how these people and their racism and stereotyping of POC works. Racist have this belief that no matter what status a person of color has they are always beneath anyone who is white, including the staff or a random person on the street. So they expect POC to always function at a certain volume within a small cage and when they are allowed outside of that cage they still expect them to act as if they are still in the small space and know their place. Never speak up or have an opinion, even when you are the boss and your staff are to follow your direction. Never outshine white people, even when you’re more superior in speaking, singing, dancing, playing sports or even if you are more intelligent and are more knowledgeable than they are. It’s bad enough as a man of color but the limitations and barriers set for WOC is even worse and so Meghan looking at what we know were incompetent employees or having expectations from them, is her going above her station. This video proves it because it was a woman who briefly looked at her staff member telling them to look up. She wasn’t smiling at that moment because she was focusing on her staff member telling them something and because she’s not a mannequin in hyena form like a certain someone we know. It was an innocent video and the UK media are making it into something else because racist believe that a WOC not smiling a hundred percent of the time, even when focusing in on someone talking to them, is them being difficult, angry or a bully.

  26. Nerd says:

It reveals that they are easily willing to believe the white people with no evidence whatsoever and vague complaints about a woman of color, but require certified photos and video footage from the person of color when she says that she experienced racism or that she was trolled for ten years. The bar for white people to be believed by these racists is nonexistent while the bar for Meghan to prove the racism, suicidal ideations, miscarriage, bullying and trolling she has endured for the past ten years is astronomical and impossible. These people are the ones who told us they didn’t like her from the start, even before she married Harry. They told us they refused to take instructions from a former “American actress” and that they held her degree against her already. We’ve heard how the others treat their staff and each other but it’s Meghan that’s the bully? Racism is a disease that all of these people have and it makes them hateful and unable to see straight.

  27. Irene says:

All this frame by frame business to make crap up, But I bet he never commented on that video where Kate very obviously shrugs Will’s hands off or Kate’s very unwanted attempts at groping Will. He and his followers are addicted to finding a problem/hating Meghan.

  28. Feeshalori says:

This continual muckraking of this woman is truly exhausting. I didn’t get any impression at all of Meghan glowering or scowling at the staffer when I watched the video. In fact, she kept a pleasant smile on her face all along.

  29. Mayp says:

My apologies to anyone who has PTSD but that cr*p from me Palace employees, to me, smacks of their angling for a monetary settlement, if not from Meghan from the palaces for which they worked for the untold anguish they experienced at the hands of mean Meghan. Otherwise, why do they keep throwing around terms like PTSD?

And, to any Brits that have a problem dealing with a direct, professional, hard-working American instead of relying on passive aggressiveness laziness and backstabbing, go suck a Scotch egg.

    • AMity says:

Agreed. I wonder if you can send cease and decease letters to this horrible thin lipped creature, Tom Sykes? Enough is enough. Take him to court and reveal these sources with “PTSD”, it’s ridiculous now.

  30. Scamuppet says:

Does anyone know who these employees are? I have yet to see even one name released. Where are the interviews? Why is no one coming forward? Because it’s all bullshit?

    • Julua says:

No one ever says what she supposedly did that was so terrible. Changing your facial expression briefly in a video while you listen to someone speaking just seems like normal behaviour.
