I tried to multi-task watching E!’s red carpet coverage of the Met Gala along with Vogue and the Associated Press’s livestream. It was a lot, but I did catch E!’s commentary on Angela Bassett along with her interview with La La Anthony for Vogue. I thought E! was being rude talking about Angela’s aging body but it was part of the Met Gala’s theme this year. Vogue detailed that the Costume Art exhibit was “organized into a series of thematic body types, ranging from the Naked Body to the Pregnant Body and the Aging Body.” Angela was in a pink Prabal Gurung that references the Harlem Renaissance painting Girl in Pink Dress by Laura Wheeler Waring. That’s lovely, and I see what they mean about an older woman wearing a gown inspired by a painting of a girl. I love the beaded fringe on her skirt. Her makeup is a little too “pink,” but that a minor complaint and they’re matching the look of the art, right down to her finger waves.
Keke Palmer was in this crimson Prabal Gurung. I couldn’t find any details about an artwork she’s referencing. I like how she looks different on every red carpet. Check out the impressive sideview. She knows how to pose.
Rachel Zegler’s gown was inspired by The Execution of Lady Jane Grey by Paul Delaroche. Now that I know that this doesn’t seem as stunt-queeny to me.
Coco Jones was so glowy and resplendent in Prabal Gurung. On E! they were saying the tailoring at her waist should have been more snatched but she looked amazing to me.
Everyone was talking about Lauren Wasser slaying in gold prosthetics and a ribbed gold Prabal Gurung shorts suit. She’s a model who lost her legs to toxic shock syndrome, and is known as “girl with the golden legs.” This look is incredible.
WNBA player A’ja Wilson was statuesque in gold Prabal Gurung with a draped trailing cape. I saw her and went “Ooh, who is that?”
Jaipur royals Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh and his sister Princess Gauravi Kumari were interviewed with Prabal Gurung by Vogue. Her gown is made from one of her grandmother’s vintage saris and he is wearing a traditional Phulghar coat. They definitely look like royalty!

I love the painting the Execution of Lady Jane Grey and I love Zegler’s dress. It’s the right mix of modern, strong and yet still vulnerable.
A’ja Wilson looked gorgeous. she looks like a work of art which is on theme.
I appreciate the looks that are referencing a painting, even if I have to have that explained to me after the fact😂
Indian folks sure know how to wear jewelry!!! Love them.
I love Angela’s dress, but it looks SUPER uncomfortable, like it’s cutting into her boobs!
Rachel’s look is beautiful and rather subtle, and I appreciate that she didn’t just replicate the exact dress in the painting.
Coco Jones’s dress reminds me of a modern (and I’m sure much easier to wear) version of the Charles James “Butterfly” dress from 1955.
These are all solid. But Lauren Wasser wow. Just wow.
Coco, Keke and Lauren were the wins for me.
The bust of Angela Bassett’s dress is too tight. Can’t these designers and the people wearing their clothes see that? It’s so obviously ill-fitting.
It is. And the makeup is bad. Maybe she could’ve worn an artsy mask or something.
I thought the same, she looks very squeezed in an uncomfortable on top.
Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh’s coat if perfection, truly a work of art. So many of the men killed it last night. I thought some of the best looks of the night were worn by men.
Yum, the maharaja is quite a dish. You rarely see a man being able to carry so much embellishment so effortlessly. Silver spoon privileges, I guess.
I was hoping that it was the Jane Grey painting that Rachel Zegler was referencing and I love it. I am so tired of the unfair, unwarranted hatred she gets in the US. She’s an enthusiastic theater kid living her dream, leave her alone.
Ok, so Lauren Wasser looks amazing, but I feel like I’m hallucinating with this picture. Is it just me or does it look like right behind her there is just part of a body going up the stairs – just the lower leg and feet but attached to no body… is it a bad attempt to remove someone walking up the stairs behind her? An optical illusion? Help. What am I seeing there? It’s so distracting.
@Rachel – it’s a trick of perspective and timing, I think. Someone petite is walking up the stairs behind Lauren, and her body blocks them from the camera except for their lower skirt & foot.
Love A’ja Wilson. She’s a boss.
Maharaja’s coat is top notch. He is definitely outshining his sister!
Angela looks like she has pink eye with that makeup. The dress isn’t a flattering cut either. It’s a miss.
Love that in the pic of Rachels dress(I know the painting and her outfit nails it) you see Sarah Paulson in the back also with a kind of blindfold
I loved Rachel Zegler’s dresses. One of my favorite looks of the night. This designer did a good job with everything.
I never thought Rachel Zegler was a talented comedienne and I still think so. Never liked her either.
She’s not a comedienne. I think you have your Rachels mixed up.
I like the idea behind Angela Basset’s look but don’t like how the gown fits in the bodice. Her makeup makes her look like she’s crying.
