The events of the past month have shone a spotlight on the Prince and Princess of Wales’s work-shy ways. First there was the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s successful Australian trip, which the royal system tried to sabotage, to no avail. Then there was Prince Harry’s Ukrainian visit, giving a keynote speech at an important security conference in Kyiv, spending time with Ukrainian veterans and active servicemen, and highlighting the ongoing work of The Halo Trust. After that, King Charles – a 77-year-old with cancer – completed a six-day state visit to the US and Bermuda. That entire time, Prince William and Kate were either on vacation or doing random busywork. Well, it’s looking more and more like William is putting his foot down about traveling for work. So it’s left to poor Kate and her pack-and-go doll wig.
Kate Middleton is set for a royal visit abroad. On May 5, the Princess of Wales announced she will visit Italy from May 13 to May 14, marking her first work trip overseas since announcing her cancer diagnosis in 2024.
Kate, 44, spent much of that year out of the public eye amid her treatment and recovery, and she returned to a fuller schedule of duties after announcing she was in remission in early 2025.
Princess Kate’s two-day visit to Reggio Emilia in northern Italy is tied to one of her key causes: early childhood. She sees the trip as a fact-finding mission, and she will spend time digging into Reggio Emilia’s internationally recognized approach to early childhood education. Seeing it as a “significant next step” for her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, Kate will spend time with educators, parents, children and civic and business leaders to see the work in action, her office at Kensington Palace says.
“The Princess is very much looking forward to visiting Italy next week and seeing first-hand how the Reggio Emilia approach creates environments where nature and loving human relationships come together to support children’s development,” her spokesperson said in a statement.
On May 6, the Princess of Wales will step out at the University of East London to launch a new guide to help those working with the youngest children. Published by The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, Foundations for Life: A Guide to Social and Emotional Development highlights the “vital role of loving, responsive relationships in shaping children’s lifelong health and well-being,” Kate’s office says, and it will be published on a new hub on the Centre for Early Childhood’s website, so that professionals in the sector can access it.
“…Marking her first work trip overseas since announcing her cancer diagnosis in 2024…” Operative words: “work trip.” Kate has traveled out of the UK a half-dozen times (at least) since her 2024 disappearance, it’s just that those travels were for vacations. She went to Greece last summer, she’s taken several ski trips, and in February 2025, William and Kate skipped the BAFTAs because they went to Mustique. I also think it’s curious that Kate is going solo for some bigger appearances, like Anzac Day and now this visit to Italy. Also: there’s a growing body of evidence that the diplomats in the Foreign Office are ripping out their hair over Will and Kate’s refusal to regularly travel for anything other than vacations.

When KP is desperate they dust off the “Early Childhood Development” distraction, funny how this project is only brought up when Wanks laziness is becoming a tabloid topic.
I agree, the purpose of this trip is iffy at best… ‘fact finding’… about what? What even is the early childhood work? More research? To do what? It’s hopeless.
I keep wondering what her centre for early childhood is actually going to do with all these facts that they keep finding with these “missions”.
If it’s facts that she wants she can literally just read a peer reviewed research paper.

Playing outside and having great parents is wonderful, right? I’m guessing that children attending Montessori schools, are more likely to have those things though. Kate should broaden her horizons.
I am familiar with a government program called ACE “All Children Excel”. They have teams that include child protection workers, social workers, attorneys, who make visits to families where a child has been identified as struggling, whether it is in school with learning or behavior/socialization issues, or the child has had contact with police or having truancy issues, etc.
The team works with the family to see if there are needs that are impacting the whole family such as financial struggles (impacting food, clothing, safe shelter, medical care), substance abuse issues, developmental disabilities, parenting issues, etc. The team works on wrap-around services for the whole family to address their needs. The program has been very successful in keeping children in school and learning, keeping them off the streets, out of trouble, and helping care-givers so they can have those nurturing relationships with the children.
It takes a government that is willing to fund a program like this to lift its citizens up, because trying to do this in the private sector is really difficult. There is much that Kate could be doing to promote this kind of work, if she would get out there with some meaningful goals, not just pie charts and listening sessions.

Yes, early years education has been a topic that has been implemented for decades around the world. For example, the Foundation in California has been operating since 1968 and covers probably all European countries, including England, where there are several. It’s an extensive, thoroughly researched and developed program, very actively conducted and implemented in collaboration with scientists, educators, doctors, politicians, NGOs, and the government. That’s why it’s being implemented in schools, preschools, and includes parenting education.
It’s all already there, it’s been there for decades, and Kate doesn’t exist there, she has no idea, never has, and never will.
She says she’s taking care of it, just like William says he’s paying taxes or flying an Apache or ending a war in the Middle East.
Kate will go to Italy, grab her biggest wig, and under her arm an empty notebook with the word “notebook” written on it, borrow a pie chart from some preschool, and tell her that the early years are important.
An observation: Her inability to correctly spell “Australia” demonstrates a woeful level of intellect, despite her undergrad degree. But of course the Rota Rats are deliberately ignoring this glaring brouhaha!!!
I like the line about her “digging in” like she actually cares about this and is going to work her butt off for those two days. Should we take bets on how many engagements she’ll actually do over those two days?
In business, a two day trip is essentially twenty-four hours, with maybe eight hours of serviceable engagement. At best, Kate will visit a center, smile at school students, and pose in front of a PowerPoint slide. What boggles my mind is that she’s not sharing any reports from her own program. Nothing about what she’s accomplished or even learned.

At this point the busy work is actually offensive. I’m sure there are plenty of people in the UK that would love to go to Northern Italy in mid May for a few days to ” fact find” for work after being off the entirety of their kids spring break and right before they are out for summer. She went on a fact-finding mission to Denmark a few years ago and nothing came of it, bar some photos of her sliding down a ramp with her mouth wide open, after having been LATE to meet Queen Margrethe. So this is just more waste of taxpayer’s money.

That Denmark engagement was incredibly important because the Danish press didn’t photoshop her. It was the first time we all saw her unedited. A significant piece of the facade came off that day.

She started the Early Years thing back in what, 2018? 2019? when Meghan did the Hubb cookbook and it was clear she was not going to be a “working” royal like Kate, but actually a WORKING royal – that was around the time the early years was announced IIRC. So 2018?
and what has she done with that project? Okay there’s an EY Centre at KP that meets once a month or so. What does it DOES. What is the end game? What is the desired result? What is the purpose? To consolidate research and offer suggestions to the government? to implement ANY kind of program as a result of that research?

Just a reminder that the first ever mention of Kate giving a shit about children who weren’t her own was when Becky English published a story about Kate doing a “broken Britain project” for kids on the Friday before Meghan launched her massively successful cookbook with the Hub ladies. This was in September 2018. A whole seven years after the wedding in 2011 before Kate even pretended to care about this issue.
First let’s note how for some reason this story came out on the Friday before the Monday launch of the cookbook, when no one in the general public had any idea that Meghan had been visiting the Grenfell ladies for months even before the wedding.
And second, it took over a year before the five question survey even happened. And this was around the time Meghan and Harry announced their departure

What is the point of another pamphlet or ‘fact finding mission’? I used to work in the Early Years sector in the UK. There is plenty of material for Early years professionals to read already. Everyone knows about the work done in Italy, it’s covered in your initial training. What the sector needs is money. Maybe her time would be better spent lobbying the government for that? Everything else from Kate ( a woman with a degree in art history) is a waste of time! Busy work for a lazy light weight
The non-profit I work for also operates in the early years sector in the US, and they are constantly collaborating with other organizations to advance their work. The Royal Centre should be doing what Earthshot does: offer grants to worthy organizations to help them further their work instead of using all that money to put out a pamphlet.

You can check the Uk court circular online and filter by dates and person. I think she’s “worked” 17 days this year. Some of them were multiple activities on the same day, but it’s not much.
If she does this visit then Trump will expect her to accompany her husband for the World Cup because other wise he’s been snubbed!! Visiting the website for the Centre for Early Childhood is certainly amusing. All of their news updates don’t have dates on them, so it can’t be too obvious that nothing has happened in months. The pages are mostly pretty graphics with very little content. It’s unclear what the centre actually does or why, other than being connected to a Royal Foundation so that Kate has stuff to do.

The gray men have to be freaking out at what erratic, lazy lightweights the future King and Queen are, BUT they created the mess by enabling the failed Wails failures to launch. Keen has been giving the same “off” vibes she had before the (alleged) cancer melodrama. She needs treatment and medically supervised care, not trotted out in an effort to force Baldimort to travel for work. Neither Keen nor Willy are quite “right” on their best day. Both are a major potential liability any time they set foot in public because they are both gaffe prone international incidents waiting to happen. The wails will be the destruction of the 1000 year English monarchy if forced to actually do anything other than carefullly staged photo ops and EVERYONE knows it.
Worth pointing out that she didnt stop traveling internationally for work because of cancer. She stopped because of the flop tour in 2022. That was her last international tour, almost two full years before she was diagnosed with cancer. And I know the press will call this a “tour” but 24 hours in a country isn’t a tour (and my guess is that will be around how much time she spends in Italy.)
But I do think its clear someone has given her the order to get off her butt and she was finally like “okay but only for one night and only if it means minimal work.”

I don’t understand what a two day visit to Italy will do for her that a library won’t. She is so performative. If she really wanted to become an expert on early childhood education I’m sure there are prestigious universities right there in the UK that she can attend to study and promote those uniquely British institutions at the same time. I’m pretty sure Oxford has a program.

Instead of the money spent on Kate’s fact-finding missions, how about donating the money that would have have been spent on Kate’s clothes, hotel, staff, flights, security, etc. to build a playgrounds in areas of need and Kate can just go on another holiday. They could name all the playgrounds Princess Kate’s Playgrounds even. And I bet they could build quite a few. BTW, that is what the Sussex Squad fundraiser for the Sussex children’s birthdays is supporting- playgrounds.

I can’t help but laugh (as many others have done) about Kate’s “fact-finding” mission, the same one she has been on for MANY YEARS, but the poor sausage was unable to find even one fact! The fakakta “fact-finding” means she needn’t do a thing about improving the “early years” for children. That would take real work, dedication, project coordination and money. Kate is not up to ANY OF IT. She could do so many things (IF she wanted to). In the U.S., we have Head Start programs and I know from personal experience that New York State has MANY programs for children with developmental disabilities (all at no cost to the parent). Kate has no intention of doing ANYTHING about the Early Years–just waste everyone’s time on what she will do, one day, maybe, if her fair godmother shows up, if she could just find the time, considering that onerous yet highly beneficial (fictional) school run. I was going to say she could at least have a nice pasta dinner, but she doesn’t eat. She can drink Italian wine! Yes, she CAN and WILL do that! Assignment aced.
I’m afraid that even if Kate wanted to do something, the brain cell she shares with her husband wouldn’t be able to handle it.

I’m wondering if the Royal foundation actually gives any money to actually help with the early years in terms of programs or opportunities for children who need them, or does all the money go to Kate’s fact-finding missions? Is a lot of money being spent not on doing good but making Kate look good?
Tamsin, I think Kate and Will have the same finance bias as Trump does: all money is their money; all money is Trump’s money. That’s why Trump’s 1 billion dollar East Wing will be paid for by the taxpayers, not by his personal friends and acquaintances (as he had promised). To be clear, English taxpayer money is for the royals to use and abuse and American taxpayer money if for Trump to use and abuse. No wonder all three are meeting in July. They have so much in common!
