Gwyneth Paltrow: ‘Super rich white dudes’ are promoting a ‘nothing matters’ culture

I haven’t thought about Gwyneth Paltrow in a minute, really since this year’s awards season. Gwyneth tried to campaign for some nominations for Marty Supreme, but it didn’t go her way, and the film didn’t win ANY Oscars. Which is fine with me because I loathed that movie. Anyway, Gwyneth still comes out ahead overall. She was in a “cool” movie, she still got invited to the Oscars (as a presenter) and she’s still a multimillionaire running a moderately successful business, Goop. As it turns out, while Gwyneth is a wealthy elitist, she also thinks the current crop of billionaire bros are f–king tragic and awful. Pot, kettle? Or “wow, when you’ve lost Gwyneth, you’ve really lost the plot?”

Gwyneth Paltrow is getting called out for what critics are calling out-of-touch comments while discussing inequality of wealth. During a recent episode of her podcast, “The Goop Podcast,” the 53-year-old actress spoke with guest Kara Swisher about the tech giants in Silicon Valley and how they have shaped the world, asking how society got to a place where wealth is all that is important.

“How did we get here as a culture? Obviously, there’s so much revenue and profit driving this whole thing. That’s at the heart of it,” Paltrow said. “But how do you think we got to this place in culture where nothing matters and now all that matters is kind of these super rich white dudes who are breaking rules, setting rules, seemingly not caring so much about the downstream impact on everything, from health to culture.”

Swisher added she once interviewed the CEO of Meta and walked away with the understanding that his mentality was “I am not responsible for everything downstream,” adding that society has “an idolatry of innovators and of wealth” with the belief that “if you’re wealthy, you must be smarter.”

While many were happy this conversation was being had, many took issue with the fact that Paltrow was the one facilitating the conversation.

“Super rich white dudes? Coming from Paltrow that is kinda funny,” one fan wrote in the comments section of an Instagram post promoting the podcast.

I’ve come around to the idea that there are no ethical billionaires. It’s true when you really think about it, although one could argue that billionaire women like MacKenzie Scott and Melinda Gates are at least trying to be woke and ethical. I think Gwyneth, while rich and elitist, is pointing out that the richest men in the world are all self-absorbed losers who don’t care about society or culture at large. Which… is a fair criticism in general, and I’m fine with Gwyneth saying it too. She might not be the best social critic of this era, but at least she’s correctly identifying the problem and saying something. She’s not trying to normalize or defend douchebags like Elon Musk or Sam Altman.

I have been saying it for years, but don’t have a podcast and have never walked a red carpet. Nobody cares what I say, but GP has a mic. Occasionally, I will applaud what she says.

  2. Kathalea says:

Well well well, she’s seems ‘awake’.
But she must stop messing with her face. The picture with the pink outfit, looks very madam tussauds

  3. Boxy Lady says:

Gwyneth is not “out of touch” on this; she is right on the nose.

  4. Self Aware much? says:

No discussion about Goop Wellness and jade eggs for your vagina? It’s entirely hypocritical for GP to condemn not caring about downstream results when she’s been such a major proponent of the wellness industry and faux healthcare. Rich and entitled is one thing. Being the face of health, detox, and diet tips which actively harm people disqualify her from being an advocate for us peasants. Have several seats, GP. Thanks for playing.

    • NotSoSocialB says:

Bingo. She’s just cashing in ahead of the curve. Her ilk have assiduously leaned into societal misogyny, while standing shoulder to shoulder with it, until it eventually rejects her.

  5. Alex Can says:

Yup, thank you! Billionaires shouldn’t exist. That level of wealth and power twists their minds and they are responsible for what’s happened in the past decade.

  6. Jais says:

In this case, she’s on point. Anyone saying pot meet kettle is trying to minimize and silence the truth in what she’s saying.

  7. Chantal1 says:

She’s wrong. These are what matters to “super rich white dudes”: Accumulating more money (thereby increasing the wealth gap), oil, power, building as many AI data centers as they can and putting them all over the US (but will never put any in their backyards), robbing the US Treasury/taxpayers via tax cuts and govt contracts, and replacing human jobs with AI while shredding the social safety net all matters immensely. They are now drunk on money and power and still aren’t satisfied. Their enablers in Congress and in state and local govts aren’t any better and are just as greedy. More rich people on or near their class/wealth level has to call them out and get involved with community and civic orgs to help average Americans who are trying to reverse the downhill trajectory this country is on.

    • Megan says:

The dystopian future is here. People like Bezos will replace us with AI, build their bunkers, and let us fight over the scraps.

  8. Vesnia says:

While she scores a few points about today’s tech bros, their wealth is NOTHING compared to America’s first mega-rich tycoons. Getty, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and Hughes had wealth that was inconceivable to the average family. Coupled with the low cost of living and absence of tech, a billion dollars in 1950 couldn’t be spent, hence the establishment of museums, charities, libraries and foundations.

    • Wilma says:

But isn’t that even more proof that nothing really matters to the current crop of billionaires? They could found museums, universities, libraries, theaters, they could fund research into cures for pretty much anything, set up charities to eradicate diseases in countries with lack of healthcare. But they do absolutely nothing.

    • Mere says:

This is simply not accurate. Neither as a measure of dollars adjusted for inflation or as a percentage of GDP. Musk has surpassed even Rockefeller as a percentage of GDP, and by a decent margin.

      • BeanieBean says:

And that robber baron money was made way earlier than 1950.

      • Vesnia says:

Rockefeller had 3% of the GDP in the 1930s. 3% of today’s GDP is $870 billion, putting him ahead of Musk. And I only used 1950 as a reference point when 3% of GDP was around $60 billion. And yes, today’s mega-rich don’t see the need for libraries and universities. Although Bezos gave money to the Met museum, his gesture was not well received.

  9. Anna says:

I have to admit, I’ve always felt a little bad for Gwyneth Paltrow. She’s a successful business woman and while I’m definitely not her target demographic, a lot of the hate she gets seems very misogynistic. Tech and crypto bros get to be seen as cowboys, innovators, doing things that haven’t been done before. Hurrah! Yet she does things that haven’t been done before but targets a female audience, and all of a sudden her business ideas are laughable. So good for her calling this out. She might be rich, but all of her wealth can’t help her avoid the misogyny.

    • Meghan says:

“Tech and crypto bros get to be seen as cowboys, innovators, doing things that haven’t been done before.”

From the SV sycophants, sure, but I’d push back by saying that I see a large amount of criticism, ridicule, mocking, and open disdain for the tech/crypto manosphere. Is it enough? No. But Bezos, Thiel, Ellison, Zuck, Altman, Musk, etc…I’ve luckily built a social circle and algorithm that roundly laughs at their blatant insecurities. In the eyes of millions, cowboys they are not.

  10. Normades says:

Gwyn is super rich and woohoo. But she’s raised kids we haven’t seen until now and is probably a lot cooler than we think. None of her colleagues have ever said she was bad to work with

  11. Moira's Roses' Garden says:

Broken clock is right for once

  12. Grant says:

Honestly, I thought she was fantastic in Marty Supreme. I wouldn’t have minded if she got a nomination. I thought most of the movies that were big this year were pretty mid, like Marty Supreme, Sinners, and OBAA, but I appreciated many of the individual performances.

  13. KC2 says:

My son is taking an acting class, and his partner is a girl he says looks just like Gwyneth Paltrow. Had to laugh because he added she’s full of red flags and very reactive.

  14. jferber says:

Her face is morphing into I don’t know what. Does Law Roach do consultations for plastic surgery before you have it? Because he could do MUCH good if he did.

  15. Irisrose says:

Isn’t she married to an uber rich white dude?

Are her stepchildren speaking to her yet?
