Prince William privately donated £1,000 to save a Wiltshire pub

Prince William has been visiting a lot of pubs in recent years. He visits pubs as work events and it’s like his backdoor way of drinking “on the job.” In recent months, he’s also been making some false claims about his background, repeatedly saying that he “grew up in pubs.” He did not. He grew up in Kensington Palace, Highgrove and Eton. He didn’t grow up in pubs, he just spent a good deal of his late teens and 20s absolutely hammered. There’s a difference! Anyway, William has been trying to make “pub advocate” into his cause du jour, and now he’s donated £1,000 of his slumlord money to “save” a Wiltshire pub.

The Prince of Wales described British pubs as a “lifeline” as he made a private donation to save a Somerset local. Prince William gave £1,000 to a campaign group trying to save the Somerset Arms in Semington, Wiltshire, which has been closed for three years and is on the market.

In a letter sent to the group, the 44-year-old described rural pubs as a “lifeline” to communities, stating: “Our pubs have long held a unique place at the heart of British life. They are not simply places of hospitality, but vital spaces that bring people together, foster a sense of belonging and support the well-being of local communities. In rural areas, they can be a lifeline, helping to combat isolation and sustain local identity. I am very keen to support the role that pubs play, not only as businesses, but as community hubs that contribute so much to the social fabric of our nation.”

His latest intervention comes after he threw his support behind saving Britain’s pubs while on an engagement at a local in Peckham, south-east London, earlier this month. The Telegraph has been campaigning to save pubs amid mounting cost pressures as landlords warn that rising taxes and bills threaten their future.

In his letter to the Semington Community Benefit Society, which is trying to raise the £395,000 needed to buy the Somerset Arms, the Prince said that he looked forward to “coming down to pull a pint and celebrate your success”.

Andy Cobley, the vice chairman of the group, said it was “over the moon” about the royal support. “We are incredibly excited and stunned,” he said. “It is brilliant His Royal Highness can recognise what is going on in these small villages and help us out. It’s fantastic.”

The group has raised almost £195,000 in pledges, as well as £4,000 through individual donations.

[From The Telegraph]

With World Cup tourists in America right now, Americans and Europeans are learning about the cultural differences between alcohol consumption, pub/bar cultures, partying and money too. Many Europeans can’t believe the (relatively) low prices and many Americans can’t believe how Scottish people have managed to consume all of the beer and liquor in Boston. Europeans can’t believe the widespread access to alcohol in America too – I mean, we sell beer and wine at pharmacies in some states, which seems to blow their minds. All of this to say, I get why pubs are considered community hubs in the UK, but I’m astounded at how little it costs to buy and operate (?) a pub in the UK. £395,000 to buy a pub which has been standing empty for years? And William only donated £1,000???

A whole 1000? WOW. What generosity. Good God. What a tool.

  2. Booboochile says:

Even when trying to copy his little brother badly i might add, he is still stingy as all heck. What is a thousand pounds, one of Kate’s bags? This man is a bottom irritant.

    • SarahCS says:

Half of one hat based on recent reporting.

      • Lady Esther says:

Yep. Her hat for Trooping this year cost over 2000 pounds…but since taxpayers paid for that one (expensed because she was “working”), maybe William thinks it didn’t count?

  3. SarahCS says:

This is tricky ground for celebrities (like US celebs sharing a go fund me for someone in their orbit).

I’d say either stay well clear or give them whatever is missing. Anything in between looks cheap to me, particularly here when the guy literally gets MILLIONS a year that he doesn’t have to work for.

    • Becks1 says:

This is how I feel. It’s a nice enough gesture, but considering Kate showed up this week in a hat that cost twice that, it feels stingy and cheap. He could have easily given the whole amount. Or he could have just steered clear. 1k feels…..just cheap.

  4. TheFarmer'sWife says:

Way to go with the huge donation! You’re a big boy now, Peggy! Seriously. Why didn’t you buy the pub, hire people and give them a hand up instead of a hand out? Didn’t your dad do something like already?

    • MsRae says:

Agreed. He could pledge to cover the difference, and it wouldn’t make a dent in his lifestyle. That kind of donation would give him the applause he desperately craves, and give him a reason to go to the pub more. I would be more forgiving of his work shy ways If he would support other people’s efforts.

  5. Jensa says:

He might as well not have bothered. With his wealth, either make a proper donation or don’t.

  6. QuiteContrary says:

That is literally the least he could have done.

And that guy being stunned with gratitude? Tug your forelock harder, dude.

  7. Tn Democrat says:

It would be hilarious if the Sussexes made a substantial donation and forced him to give more than .0025% of the goal after a rota rage briefing meltdown. It is a shame George is going to Eton and is going to spend his entire life completely insulated from the real world just like the rest of the Windsors. Willy needs snapped into reality because he just has no clue how the real world works. Give a substantial amount that is at least a full percentage point of the goal or don’t bother. And. Not to defend this backerds tool at all and he certainly never went to pubs with his parents/grandparents or spent time with us poors, but he was boarded by age 8. He spent most of his childhood with staff and peers who had to treat him with reverence because of his title. I would bet especially after the media blackout that occurred in the aftermath of Diana’s death, he did some normal stuff with friends and RPOs. The problem is he has never socialized around anyone not paid to be around him or benefitted directly from their royal connections and has been way to embiggened.

  8. Beverley says:

Man, Peg is one cheap bastard! Who is he trying to impress with that piddly donation? Apparently only the rota, because the dragging has already begun online. Peg is being read for filth!

True talk: had Harry or Meghan donated such a paltry amount to any charity, the rota would be crowing about how miserly and selfish the Sussexes are.

  9. irisrose says:

    Sure, Jan.

William has no private funds, outside of his Diana inheritance that he may have wasted on the Middleton family home. *IF* he donates anything else? It comes from The Duchy which does not belong to him.

  10. Kittenmom says:

Hey big spender! That’s probably not even a dent in the pub’s monthly rent.

  11. jferber says:

Oh, so he can give charity to a pub, but not people in need? And only one thousand pounds? Such a bastard.

  12. Sweet Tea says:

WOW!!! A whole thousand dollars!!! Laws of mercy.

  13. Jferber says:

If it were so private, why was this yuge contribution on all the gossip sites. He’s so cheap with the money he he gets but does not earn. His work has never been connected to his money. So he can and is as lazy as he wants to be and the money keeps flowing, no, gushing in. The man will never have a work ethic– just hobbies he calls work. Drinking, watching sports and being a playboy (though he can never spin his affairs into “work,” and I bet he regrets that). Worthless poseur.
