Kay: Duchess Meghan is ‘trying to channel the mother-in-law she never met’

When the Duchess of Sussex attended David Foster’s foundation gala in Canada two weekends ago, she ended up wearing a pair of earrings which once belonged to Princess Diana. Meghan had worn the earrings before – they are the small, sapphire-and-diamond butterfly earrings. Prince Harry has obviously given Meghan several pieces of his mother’s private jewelry collection, and Meghan’s engagement ring even includes a diamond from one of Diana’s pieces. Well, the royal commentators are irritated by all of this. How dare Diana’s daughter-in-law wear a pair of Diana’s earrings! They are never irritated when the other DIL copykeens an entire look from Diana. Weird!

Meghan Markle is “trying to stake a claim on Princess Diana’s legacy” after her choice of earrings last weekend, a royal expert has claimed. Joined by husband Prince Harry, Meghan attended the David Foster Foundation’s 40th anniversary gala over the weekend.

The Sussexes’ connection with David Foster runs deep; the music mogul helped the couple find a place to stay in Canada in 2019, merely weeks before they famously quit their royal duties. So, to celebrate the special occasion, hosted in British Columbia, Canada, Harry suited up in a tux, while Meghan chose a striking black one-shoulder draped gown by the Canadian label Greta Constantin.

Notably, however, the duchess completed the look with diamond and sapphire earrings from the personal collection of the late Princess Diana. Per reports, they were the exact pair worn by Diana when she visited British Columbia back in 1986.

It was made particularly poignant, being just weeks after the Sussexes took their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to Diana’s final resting place on the Althorp Estate in Northamptonshire for the first time.

However, the Daily Mail’s Richard Kay feels the subtle nod may be more significant.

“It does feel to me she is trying to stake a claim on Diana’s legacy,” he said. “It would have taken an enormous amount of research to find out precisely what Diana wore on a visit to an obscure part of Canada. No offence, but it was a remote part of Canada back in 1986. She does look to me like she’s trying to channel the mother-in-law she never met.”

Meghan possesses a notable collection of her late mother-in-law’s jewellery. Among the pieces are Diana’s butterfly earrings with a matching cuff bracelet, a diamond tennis bracelet, her Cartier Tank Louis watch, and the famous aquamarine ring – often referred to as Diana’s “divorce ring” – which Meghan wore on her wedding day in 2018.

[From GB News]

By the way, I’ve always wished that Diana’s aquamarine ring would get more outings because it’s gorgeous! I wouldn’t blame Meghan if she wore that ring every single day. As for Meghan wearing the earrings in Canada, do you honestly think she researched where and when Diana wore those particular earrings? I’m not so sure. And didn’t Diana wear that particular pair quite often? Chances are, those earrings were seen in many other countries. This is bizarre though: “She does look to me like she’s trying to channel the mother-in-law she never met.” Kate “never met” Diana either, you guys. And people always praise Kate to the hilt whenever she “channels” Diana, down to having almost exact replicas of Diana’s clothes made so that Kate can wear those replicas to certain events which Diana also attended.

Both harry and scooter inherited their mother’s property but only keen can wear diana jewelery . Keen even makes a point to show off big blue. Diana would be ashamed of kay. Diana’s ring was a divorce ring that keen wears

    • Kasztanka says:

The press can’t criticize the Waleses; instead, they attribute all their moronic, psychedelic antics to the Sussexes so they can criticize them to their heart’s content.
No matter how you look at it, criticizing Meghan for her earrings—while right next to her you have a deranged copycat who’ll dress up head-to-toe like other women and show up in the same places looking just like them—is absolute lunacy.

    • Miranda says:

I’m sure I’ve made this comment about Big Blue before, but I still think it’s absolutely WILD that William chose to give it to Kate as-is. I mean, my own wedding band once belonged to my husband’s grandmother, who was happily married to his grandfather for almost 60 years. Very touching, very romantic. Diana and Charles, on the other hand, had one of the most infamously disastrous marriages of all time. You don’t have to be particularly superstitious to think that there’s some seriously bad juju attached to that ring! Even at the time of their engagement, I remember thinking that William not at least resetting the gems suggested some level of thoughtlessness or indifference towards his bride-to-be. And the years have certainly borne that out, haven’t they? I guess he was lucky that Kate was too empty-headed to see the bad omen.

      • Kasztanka says:

        @Miranda
If William hadn’t given her that ring, the Middletons would have clawed it out of him. Carole has lived a royal fantasy—driven by her obsession—for ages, and then she infected her daughters with that same obsession. Pippa has partially stepped away from it, though she happily takes advantage of all the perks, even going so far as to skirt the law. Kate, on the other hand, took that obsession even further than her mother—it’s as if she’s been completely brainwashed. To be Diana, to be Elizabeth, to be Meghan… and, of course, to get the crown… a crown she and Carole can take turns wearing while eating breakfast :)))))
Kate wouldn’t have let anyone put any other ring on her finger, even if that one had been burning her. Admittedly, I’m convinced she was given a replica to wear, but I’m sure she doesn’t mind. The important thing is that it’s visible; even though she’s been married for years, she still constantly puts her left hand on display, often in an unnatural way—it’s pathetic… If William finally decides to get a divorce, those two Middletons will completely lose their minds…

      • Chrissy says:

We have to remember that Willnot is a skinflint so he grabbed the first FREE ring he saw to give to Cannot. And she wears it for everything, including gardening, making dough and on a mountain trek in Scotland/ Wales! The deserve each other in their audacity!

    • VeryV says:

Every accusation is a confession. Again. Always. 🙄

  2. julie says:

I have a few rings from my mother and godmother, both dead. And when I meet with family I wear their rings not to copy them but simply to virtually have them present at these meeting. It’s symbolic, maybe simplistic but it make me happy. I guess Meghan does the same to make Harry happy.
Richard Kay is a hater for sure, but also a person who lack deep understanding of human sentiment.

  3. VMax says:

Harry has got to protect his skin. A strong sun block and moisturizer can help reduce the effects of sun exposure.

    • Graphinya Heather says:

This! And this isn’t some faux concern or trolling. I’m a blue eyed ginger myself and sunblock is a part of my daily routine even if the closest I’m getting to outside is near a window. this isn’t virtue signaling. Sunburns hurt lol.

      • VMax says:

Trust me I only mentioned it out of genuine concern. Skin cancer is no joke and plenty of fair skinned people in my life have learned the hard way. Add his ginger dna with a healthy dose of California sun and it’s not good.

  4. iCordelia says:

These people are so unwell. Millions of people around the world wear family heirlooms without any fuss. She was gifted these items and she’s wearing them. Do they expect her to put them in a museum?

This suspiciously sounds like they’re saying “how dare this American Black woman wear our English rose’s jewelry? This does not belong to her.”

These people need to get a life and stop commenting on Meghan’s every move.

    • 2131Jan says:

Don’t remember which of those deranged “reporters” had an absolute conniption fit when a pic was published of M hiking with friends around Montecito, and *GASP* SHE WAS WEARING “DIANA’S GOLD WATCH!!! TO HIKE!!!!” You could literally hear the bodies explode in outrage across the ocean, and drop to the floor in a dead faint.

      • Joanne says:

I don’t recall the same hysteria over Kate wearing big blue while doing the 3 peaks challenge. It really does seem that the rules change depending on who’s wearing what.

      • Lurker says:

Meghan bought herself the same tank watch before she met Harry. How can people tell which one she wears?

Kate wore Big Blue diving. Not a peep.

It is simply racism and jealousy. Remember when Willy asked why Meghan didn’t wear her engagement ring? As if he had any claim to it!

  5. Tessa says:

Kay should be ashamed of himself. He must read the deranger comments saying meghan should never have gotten Diana’s jewelry. Keen never met diana. And she’s so not like diana. Diana left a will and she left both her sons her property to divide up.

  6. Bings says:

Kay and co., are irritated because I read that the pieces Meghan received and wears, are from Diana’s personal collection, and as such belong to Meghan, (and eventually Lili)— while the pieces Kate wears, belong to the crown.

  7. 2131Jan says:

My sister and I have pieces from our mom and grandmother and wear them daily. For me, it’s their presence being with me, with our family, all the time. About 2 yrs after my dad passed, I was cleaning out boxes and such to prepare for my reno, when I found my dad’s Longines gold watch; it was my mom’s wedding gift to him. Both my sister and I wanted to wear it, of course (*no* arguments about all the other jewelry lol). I came up with a plan: she wears it January through the end of June (her birthday falls in February), and I wear it July through December (my birthday falls in October). Works for us 😊

I’d LOVE to know all the pieces M has from Diana! I sure wish she’d wear more of it. And yes to the Aquamarine! That ring is a STUNNER!

    • Jay says:

That’s a lovely idea to “split” the watch so that you and your sister will both get to enjoy it! I’ll bet it feels more special to wear it if you know it’s only for half the year, and this will also now be part of the watch’s history. Thanks for sharing!

  8. Tessa says:

Maybe scooter was upset that he had to divide up Diana’s estate with harry. Good thing she made that will.

    • Mayp says:

I don’t think they’ve split the jewelry up yet. Otherwise, we would have seen more on both Kate and Meghan. As it is, Kate has nabbed more valuable pieces of jewelry than Meghan. They really just need to do an equitable split and be done with it.

  9. Becks1 says:

I really doubt Meghan did a deep dive to see what Diana wore when she visited British Columbia in the 80s. Meghan has worn those earrings before and Diana also wore them on several occasions. This is just the press bemoaning the fact that Meghan has ANYTHING that belonged to Diana.

    • Kirk says:

Sounds to me like Britmedia making sure they profit off both Meghan and Diana at the same time.

      • Where'sMyTiara says:

        British Media hated two things:
Not being able to control Diana,
        and
Not being able to control Meghan.

They act like they own these women, and they get livid when their paper dolls exhibit agency.

    • Barb Mill says:

No Meghan didn’t but the Kay sure did the research “It would have taken an enormous amount of research to find out precisely what Diana wore on a visit to an obscure part of Canada. No offence, but it was a remote part of Canada back in 1986.”

    • GrnieWnie says:

also what Brits consider remote and what Canadians consider remote are two different things. Remote, for us, is no roads. Accessible only via aircraft.

I also think the UK just doesn’t get American culture. It doesn’t get that Americans are into style in a completely different way than Brits. It doesn’t get how planned public appearances are. It doesn’t get American marketing (and for all of the US’s problems, nowhere else does marketing as well as Americans do). They truly do hate her just because she isn’t them.

  10. Amy Bee says:

I don’t understand the outrage. This was not the first time Meghan has worn these earrings. The British press is grasping at straws now. Plus why are they not outraged when Kate wears Diana’s jewellery.

  11. Jay says:

There’s so much dumb stuff here, but I’m stuck on “expert” Richard Kay claiming that Vancouver is an “obscure” and “remote” part of Canada. I mean, possibly to him because it’s clear he never leaves his bubble, but the reason Diana was there in 1986 was that they were hosting the World Expo. That’s when the Skytrain first opened!

    • MaisiesMom says:

Wait I missed that part! LMAO. How out of touch can you be? I’ve been to two cities in Canada: Montreal and Vancouver. I had to fly to both (I’m in Texas) so they’re equally “remote” to me. Does he not know Vancouver is a world class city? Does he not know that we have, like, airplanes now and everything? We ain’t trekking across mountains on horseback. What an idiot.

    • Becks1 says:

It’s the way he says “back then it was a remote part of canada….” I mean it was the 80s, it wasnt the 15th century for pete’s sake.

      • Nic919 says:

Vancouver has always been the third largest city in Canada. Kay needs to stay in his island and stop talking like a fool.

    • windyriver says:

First, when I saw all the articles about Meghan wearing Diana’s earrings, I thought they must be referring to some new and noteworthy item. Could hardly believe they were making such a fuss over the same small butterfly earrings we’ve seen more than once.

Meanwhile, Sunday was Cary Grant day on TCM and Indiscreet was on, which I hadn’t seen in a long time. It takes place in London. Ingrid Bergman plays a famous actress who lives there, and when she finds out financier Grant is from San Francisco, she says, “It’s delightful, but it’s so far from everything.” Cary replies, “It depends on what is everything.” She says, “Our theater, our opera, our museums…”. And he responds, “We’re not as isolated in San Francisco as you think. The stagecoach makes it fairly regularly now.” The movie is from 1958, but I see the English perspective hasn’t changed.

I adored Victoria when I was there two years ago, and while I didn’t care for Vancouver as much, there was no doubt it was a major metropolis. Kay really is a provincial twerp at heart.

      • Lady D says:

If you get the chance Windyriver, try the other side of the island. The scenery around Tofino and Ucluete is stunning. Seashells, whales, mountains, little islands, buying fish that was caught 20 minutes earlier
… I could go on and on. There is a .museum with a life-sized painting of a whale. It takes up three walls in the museum.

      • windyriver says:

Thank you @Lady D; looking at some pictures, and it looks amazing. We were on a bus tour, with a couple of days in Victoria, and at least got to see a bit of the island north east of Victoria via a small boat whale watch trip, then took the ferry back to the mainland from Nanaimo. In fact, we’d planned to be back in Victoria (with a car!) around the weekend H&M were there, but the trip got postponed. I know there’s lovely spots around Vancouver we also didn’t get to; I see that Remarkably Bright Creatures was filmed in Deep Cove in North Vancouver. So much unbelievable scenery everywhere.

On a cloudy day when we were in Vancouver we walked to QE park; expecting only a few sprinkles we got caught in an all afternoon downpour. Took refuge for a while in the lovely conservatory but ultimately someone guided us to the community rec center where the IG had the curling competition last year (and we had better luck getting an Uber) – at the time we were just grateful to dry off and have some hot chocolate!

    • GrnieWnie says:

are my eyeballs failing me? (Possible). I didn’t see the part where the press depicted VANCOUVER as remote?? I grew up in Vancouver in the 1980s. It was not, and has not been for well over a century, considered remote.

  12. Louise says:

GTFOH with the ‘remote in 1986’ business. Victoria is the capital of the province ya jerk. It is NOT remote.

  13. SnowPenguin says:

On behalf of Canadians, Kay is an insufferable tw*t.

Imagine calling British Columbia ‘obscure’, some unchartered wilderness as if it appears on some blue on a map from the 1700s … it is 8 times larger than little England with a population of 5 million + people. To add to his coloniser arrogance – its capital Victoria, which is more English than England, is literally named after their bloody queen.

As a Canadian in London, may this horrible little man be condemned to ride the Central Line in summer for the rest of his days.

  14. harriet says:

I have a very similar aquamarine ring, color and size. I adore it but can’t wear it every day as aquamarine is too soft for daily wear. My favorite stone and my favorite ring.

  15. ABritGuest says:

The British royal propagandists will denigrate anything and anyone for their constant campaign against Meghan and Harry.

  16. Blubb says:

No she isn’t. But I just read that Charles Spencer is publishing a book about his sister this year… The truth.

  17. QuiteContrary says:

I honestly think Diana would have loved Meghan — first of all because she makes Harry so happy, but also because she’s hardworking, charismatic and compassionate.

This is yet more gatekeeping to say that the Black woman shouldn’t be allowed to wear what the white woman wears all the time.

    • Where'sMyTiara says:

Shorter Racist Richard Kay: ” The runaway slave was last seen headed for California with the late Mistress’ jewels”.

Richard, you’re nasty. A small man with a small mind and a racist little walnut of a heart. Keep Diana and the Sussexes’ names out of your mouth, and write articles about the downfall of your precious salty left behind “working royals” instead.

  18. GMHQ says:

With the tragic mess the british media made in recent weeks of a black Cambridge professor, we can better see clearly just how racist they are on salt island. I sense that the British public are being forced to admit reality, including what they have been doing to Meghan.

  19. Jais says:

Ah yes, Meghan is trying to stake a claim. Meanwhile Kate wore Diana’s earrings to Meghan’s baby shower. Okaaay.

  20. tamsin says:

All of these so-called “royal experts” are well past their due date, and they should quit spewing their curdled view of the world. Really, the term “royal expert” itself should become derogatory, a label any decent professional with regard for the truth and reality should be ashamed to be associated with.

  21. Twinkles says:

Diana came to Vancouver Canada for Expo ’86– does Kay seriously think that Vancouver was a “remote part of Canada” ? He can’t get that right, why believe anything he says?

  22. Tvskygirl says:

So Diana wore these earrings in an “obscure” part of British Columbia? So Vancouver is an obscure part of British Columbia? Expo 86 – which is why they were here, – was an obscure event?

What is wrong with these people?

  23. Nerd says:

He says that she’s trying to stake claim to Diana’s legacy” but how exactly is she doing that by wearing earrings she’s worn before? How would it take an enormous amount of research in 2026 to find out what earrings Diana wore to a certain place? Just because she is better at research, as are most people, than the entire Royal Rota, doesn’t mean it’s difficult to research such a thing or that she’s trying to claim Diana’s legacy.

Kate, who has also never met her late MIL, copies everything Diana wears, sometimes to the exact color, style, fit and location, yet the biracial DIL wearing one item of Diana’s is too much and a clear attempt to claim Diana’s legacy. She’s even tried to copy Diana to the tea by having her child wear Harry’s clothes on the balcony and by wearing Diana’s earrings at Archie’s Christening, similar to what Diana wore to Harry’s Christening. How is it okay for Kate to go beyond just wearing a subtle nod to Diana, but not okay for Meghan to wear a single item of Diana’s? Tell me you are a racist who can’t handle that a woman of color is in your royal family and I will tell you that it was obvious from the very beginning.

  24. Mrs.Krabapple says:

When Kate wears another woman’s jewelry, she is paying homage to them. When William and Kate make their children write mother’s day cards about how much they love the grandmother they never met (and then present those cards to the press), it’s supposed to be sweet. But Meghan wearing jewelry is so very wrong?

The racism is so strong. I wish the tabloids could be held accountable for the racist hatred they foment.

    • Agreatreckoning says:

Let’s not forget the other oft spoken phrase by royalists/RR stenographers when Kate wears something from Diana, ‘a sweet nod’.

Meghan wears something gifted to her by her husband that he inherited from his mother. It’s a crime or something. Thank you, Richard Kay for showing your racism. Diana would not appreciate your comments.

Diana, imo, would be very proud of Harry and fast friends with Meghan. Love would be all around with them.imo

  25. Jferber says:

I think they mean the horrible Kate, not Meghan.

  26. mightymolly says:

Let’s face it, all married in women for the end of time will be compared to Diana, but none of them will be actually comparable. Although Di always had a very mature look, so much of her story is about how absolutely young and truly naive she was. She grew up quickly and found her true self, who the world fell in love with. But there’s almost zero comparison to Meghan who was a worldly, accomplished woman when she met Harry. Meghan also – and this is a HUGE difference – had a loving, devoted partner who stood by her side through all the abuse.

But yes Meghan sometimes wears family heirlooms, as do all of us who are fortunate enough to have some.

  27. Tessa says:

What about keens sweet nods to diana

  28. L4Frimaire says:

I genuinely don’t understand what he’s trying to say here or what point he’s trying to make. Meghan has worn Diana’s jewelry before, including those earrings. How is she channeling Diana? Meghan did look very elegant and regal at that event, and she exuded glamour and charisma, so maybe that’s what he’s trying to articulate in this article. He’s trying to use this as a way to attack her because of how people feel about Diana, but she is married to Diana’s son and gave birth to her grandchildren. They’re still trying to other and isolate Meghan and this one doesn’t make any sense. I personally hate when people say Meghan is Diana 2.0, even as praise. She is her own person with her own talents and unique traits. Just because she admires and respects her late MIL and her legacy doesn’t mean she wants to be her. What nonsense. They’re so bothered about this trip to Vancouver.

  29. sunniside up says:

“trying to stake a claim on Princess Diana’s legacy” This sort of statement really annoys me, she is wearing a pair of earrings she likes. It’s too simple for the journalists.
