Roxane Gay enjoys royal gossip and she cares a lot about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. In December 2022, she wrote a NYT column about the Harry & Meghan Netflix series and the broader implications of what the Sussexit meant for the monarchy. Gay widely defended Harry and Meghan’s choices and their story, but at the end of her 2022 column, she noted: “Harry and Meghan seemed content to be part of the royal family if only the royal family had been willing to embrace change. But the monarchy doesn’t need to be changed. It needs to be dismantled. If Harry and Meghan were to have acknowledged that, it would have made their story infinitely more interesting.” That really is it, and Harry has said as much repeatedly – that he does not want to dismantle the racist, colonialist and sexist system, he just wanted that system to treat his wife better. Well, Roxane Gay has a new NYT column about the Sussexes’ imminent return to Britain: “Don’t Harry and Meghan Know Better?” Some highlights:
The reality of the Sussex story: As endearing as Meghan and Harry’s story was, reality was never far behind. The biggest crisis, of course, was that a woman of color was infiltrating the royal family and, more important, the royal bloodline, however diluted it may be at this point. What should have been merely fraught but manageable quickly became untenable. There was nothing Meghan could do that would have ever been good enough, and as she has detailed in the years since, the pressures from within and outside the royal family had a detrimental effect on her mental health. It’s kind of miraculous that their relationship has, to this point, endured.
Telling all: [Once they moved to California,] The Sussexes set about the business of raising their young family. They also settled some scores in a rather scorched-earth set of moves. There was “Harry & Meghan,” a Netflix documentary series that offered viewers a very curated look at their lives. It was all very bland and not particularly revealing but somehow watchable. The couple also sat down with Oprah Winfrey, a consummate interviewer, and bared if not all, then quite a lot. In that 2021 prime-time special, they both detailed the blatant racism, double standards and naked indifference, even cruelty, of the royal family. As Meghan, in particular, shared her story, you couldn’t help but wonder how she withstood it all. Theirs was a compelling performance, a closing argument in the matter of what precipitated such a drastic move toward respite and reinvention.
Harry’s Spare: In 2023, Harry published “Spare,” a lengthy memoir about growing up as the boy who always knew he would never be king. The prose was utilitarian and occasionally funny. Early in the memoir, he has a line about William’s “alarming baldness, more advanced than my own,” that makes me laugh every time I think of it. But mostly, Harry’s was a hollow story of knowing your place in life and being unduly constrained by it.
Harry’s struggles: Before marriage, Meghan made her own way in the world. She did it once, and she could do it again. Harry, on the other hand, had never known a civilian life in which he truly had to prove himself, in which he wasn’t lavishly celebrated by birthright. Little came of Harry’s attempts at media work. Most of the podcast ideas he proposed, for instance, were silly at best, and nothing happened with his one good idea, a series about fatherhood. Harry and Meghan must have hoped that distance and time would help him find his footing, but the most successful endeavors he had stateside were all connected to the very thing he was trying to escape: his royal lineage. He had to learn that when people aren’t by custom expected to like or pretend to like you, you have to bring something substantive to the table and when you don’t, the opportunities disappear. Making of this old world a new world remained elusive.
Public opinion: In some corners, Harry and Meghan were lauded for fighting for gilded independence (because Harry holds an amount of privilege from which he can never truly escape). Others said they were abandoning the royal family, being selfish, especially when the palace announced more than two years ago that Charles had cancer. A lot of people blamed Meghan for being too much of a diva, too difficult to work with, too American and, of course, too Black. No matter what you think about Harry and Meghan, race is the proverbial elephant in the room…. This is the power of bigotry: The monarchy has tolerated a breathtaking range of despicable behavior from assorted royals, but what they could not abide is a Black woman.
The crown of racism: People can attribute all of this royal family tension to ego or pettiness or a would-be king asserting his will over a never-will-be king, but that won’t change the painful reality that the king wears the heavy crown of racism and most of those in the current line of succession will, too.
The Sussexes know better: Given this state of affairs, it was quite surprising when news broke that Harry, Meghan and their two children are returning to live in Britain. They know better, this time around, about what to expect and how to navigate it. But they also have to, once more, figure out who they are, without the position or the power to which they were once adjacent. They will have to endure the notoriously cruel British press that has hounded them incessantly. They will have to figure out if they can, finally, make a home for themselves, one where they are welcomed and embraced without having to contort themselves into the shape the monarchy prefers. They will have to see if their relationship can continue to endure.
Integration in a burning house: In this next chapter of their not quite fairy tale, the Sussexes are caught between two complicated worlds, neither of which is particularly hospitable to their unique circumstances. In the New Yorker essay “Letter From a Region in My Mind,” James Baldwin asks, “Do I really want to be integrated into a burning house?” Baldwin asks that question in a very different context, but I suspect it is nonetheless one Harry and Meghan have been trying to answer for years.
This is broadly how I feel at this point as well, and James Baldwin’s quote is apt. It feels like we’re waiting for the other shoe to drop, to finally learn the *actual* reason for their move, because none of this makes sense in the broader context of the past seven years. You can say a lot about Harry and Meghan, both good and bad, but no one can say that the Sussexes have no idea what they’re willingly walking into this time around.

1. I dont believe Meghan feels this way. I think she is happy never to step foot in or think about the UK. 2.. Its Harry that is pushing for all things “home.” He loves the place in which he was born and his heritage. The idea that they are inserting themselves back into the monarchy for its perks, is nonsense. Harry LOVED the Queen and his Dad, despite it all. Its all very simple and media think pieces (clickbait) on the topic of H&M is SO obvious and SO boring!
What if we’re talking about the wrong generations. What if this is really about Archie and Lillibet. The giveaway is the schooling. Raising the children in Britain gives them a genuine British identity and solid toehold in the royal family. It’s a lot harder to smear the two children than the parents. That’s the dilemma the Waleses now face and good luck with that one, Will and Kate. Archie and Lilibet are being positioned for royal relevance and popularity. Checkmate.
It is extremely easy to smear a child and it’s been done before. The Sussex kids are in the same exact position as the York girls when they were young. If Archie is video’ed being rambunctious (you know, a kid) he’ll be unfavorably compared to his cousins, especially George, who are so much “better.” And if Lili is 2 pounds overweight, the comparisons to the thinner Charlotte will be abound. It’s so easy to do because it can reflect on the parents: Archie is allowed to run wild because of his parents, and Lili is “heavy” because Meghan as an American doesn’t know a thing about healthy eating (eyes are rolling, I know).
Are you being obtuse? You forgot them calling Archie a monkey? The ongoing comments about Lili hair not being brushed….how the hell are parents raising children under a racist institution a checkmate?
You’re turning H&M into a nasty and vindictive couple that are planning to use their kids to gain royal relevance and score a victory over William.
“Archie and Lilibet are being positioned for royal relevance and popularity.” Absolutely NOT! I very much doubt Harry & Meghan are in the least bit interested in their children being anywhere near the royal eco-system of dysfunction! It’s more likely Harry would like their children to experience British culture as it’s part of their heritage.
That this is about Archie & Lili was also proposed by LaineyGossip.
But I think it’s less about a checkmate of positioning them for royal relevance and popularity per se – especially since Meghan no doubt is keenly aware that the BRF, RR and public have no qualms about being racist towards kids, and Harry knows from experience that the “spare” kids can and will be scapegoated to preserve the mainline.
I think it’s more about giving Archie & Lili *the choice/option* to one day be part of this world if they want. We’ve seen repeatedly how “old money” British aristocracy doesn’t accept outsiders – reportedly even Kate, and we just saw evidence of it with Pippa too.* Everyone everywhere knows how Old Boys Clubs operate, and it certainly sounds like the British aristo class – and the school system in particular – is a special kind of uber stick-up-their-bum Old Boys Club that neither Archie nor Lili would have any chance of being part of (despite their, yes, birthright), if perhaps they don’t set up these relationships in school now.**
So I think it is less about H&M using their children as some kind of pawn against W&K, or C&C, or the BM, etc., and more about making sure they don’t limit opportunities/eliminate choices that should be their children’s right to decide one day.***
*(I know Pippa and Kate both brought a lot on by their own mean girl behavior! But with their middle class background they were never going to be fully accepted by the posh gatekeepers, no matter what)
**Why anyone would want to be part of such an insular world so enchanted by their own sense of entitlement and privilege is beyond me, but hey, I’m also not a millionaire and we know extreme wealth warps people, so…?!
***This is if the real reason isn’t simply Invictus prep, or that H really just wants to spend time closer to his dad if C really is more ill than has been publicized, which I think is probably still a large part of this.
Or if M really did get an acting job in the UK, but my hunch is if that is true, it is probably because they already had reasons to come back to the UK, and was not the main impetus for the move.
Actually, I was thinking the opposite – what if H&M have decided Archie and Lili’s primary schooling will be in the US, but that there’s value to a year spent in the UK while they’re still too young to have strong friend and activity connections elsewhere, and at a time when other circumstances align for H&M to benefit from being there as well. The children can come back and visit the UK at other times but will have established a basic frame of reference.
Archie and Lili are sixth and seventh in line to the British throne. So the interesting question to me is, what obligation do Harry and Meghan feel about educating their children about this part of their heritage, and validating their status and birthright, until they’re old enough to make their own decisions about how to relate to this significant portion of their history? And the time to start is now, while Charles is on the throne, before the chaos that will ensue once Will takes over.
I had more to add, but just read the sad news about Dolly Parton, and I’m done with this for now.
I think it’s pretty simple. For better or worse, even with the conflict and acrimony, they are Harry’s family and country of origin. Watching your parent decline and knowing that your time with them is increasingly finite can change your perspective and priorities, even if your relationship history was fraught.
This. ESPECIALLY if you’ve already lost a parent suddenly. The fear that you will be without them both at a relatively young age sticks to you like a never-ending layer of emotional sweat. It’s hard to escape. I never thought I would return home to a dysfunctional and unhealthy childhood base…but after 23 years and losing my mom suddenly, here I am. I just have waaaaaaaaaay different boundaries than I had at 17, and the moment my dad even looks like he can’t respect an emotional boundary with my son, we vanish (with explanation) for a while. It’s not ideal, but our son loves his grandad (tragically, the last grandparent on either side). It’s complicated.
Yeah, it seems pretty simple to me. He wants to spend more time with Charles AND he’s got Invictus in Birmingham AND they want their kids to experience living in the UK for a bit. I assume they’ll come for a year or two.
The press have never left them alone. I imagine the security issues have been worked out and that’s why they are doing it now.
@Nutella Toast, I really appreciate this perspective.
Roxane Gay is a good writer but with the Sussexes, her main gear is still “snide.” Same as with her NY Mag profile of Meghan, here she chooses words like “endearing” (in the most patronizing way), “bland…but somehow watchable” (grudging compliment with the insult), “performance” (they’re lying!), “settling scores” instead of trying to get their own narrative out there, etc…
She uses Harry and Meghan to make better, broader points about racism and the monarchy that are unoriginal, if well-written. I like the James Baldwin quote but since it’s used to basically warn the Sussexes (as if they don’t know more than she does) it falls flat for me. Guess she had to first pay the Sussex tax though!
Yeah, Harry is hardly the hapless loser she portrays him as. He is heading Invictus, which is an amazing organization that helps a ton of people of all races and sexes. There’s no brief about them returning to the burning house of the BRF, they are simply returning to Britain. And none of us knows exactly why. It will make an interesting sequel to Spare.
Yes, this is exactly how I read Roxane’s article!
It has that same touch of snide condescension she puts in so much of her writing—even on Threads, and back when I was still on Twitter.
(Though the New Yorker write up was someone else.)
People need to realize they are not the naive people they were six years ago. Too many of us project our own expectations onto the Sussexes, and it’s foolish to do so. Let’s not forget that Harry and Meghan were completely prepared to go the part-time royal route. They were ready to move to South Africa, Australia, or Canada half the time, but the Queen refused. They ultimately left to take care of their own needs and make their own money.
Right? I am not sure why all these journalists act like Harry was a naive young boy when he met Meghan. He was a combat veteran, for crying out loud. I am pretty sure he knew that the world wasn’t all sunshine and lollipops and people laughing at his jokes (only because he has a title).
Thank you, @Puff Updater!!! I was looking for the right phrase, but “hapless loser” is exactly the way they portrayed Harry for ages, even when it should have been more than clear to everyone involved that he’d outgrown the adolescent phase of strip poker in Vegas (which actually won him points with a lot of people, LOL) and such like. None of that stuff was malicious, it was harmless and endearing on some level. Everyone is allowed to be a bit wild when they’re young, ffs. But I think they treated JFK Jr the same way — Carolyn told one person he was designated “the family f*ck-up” — and so both were primed to be subsequently depicted as marionettes to their controlling wives. It’s a tired trope. I don’t know why it appeals to so many people and gets so much traction.
Agreed. When I was reading the excerpts I was surprised how she was interpreting Harry’s “perspective” of life after leaving the Firm. The parts about him being “lavishly celebrated by birthright” in his previous life seems contradicted by what he wrote in Spare – from the outside the public might have assumed was happening but his lived reality was somewhat different.
And “He had to learn that when people aren’t by custom expected to like or pretend to like you, you have to bring something substantive to the table and when you don’t, the opportunities disappear.”? Harry, as far as I can tell, seems to have spent most of his adult life well liked by people he’s worked with, and developing, bringing to life substantive projects, in service of others, the greater good- Invictus anyone? Yes, some things don’t pan out, but that is true of anyone trying to make an impact, establishing their own way in the world. And yes, I’d imagine it was a big shift living in a new country and outside the control of the Firm. Exploring different paths, possibilities, approaches made sense, especially because he could do it finally independent of restraints, interference from The Firm, The Grey Men, his FOO. It’s to be expected some things wouldn’t work out.
Her points about racism, the Institution of the monarchy stand, but her characterization of who Harry and Meghan were as people, and are now, their presumed interior experiences and place in the public sphere seemed contrived – and sometimes in direct conflict with publicly obvious facts and the Sussexes own statements – in service of the broader societal points she’s making.
I’d also point out, as far as Harry’s attempts at media, everyone seems to forget The Me You Can’t See – Oprah said about working with Harry, that he usually had his notes ready before she did – and Heart of Invictus, both fine programs, neither of which involved Meghan. It’s nice to see some acknowledgement of the reality of Meghan’s UK experience, but undercutting Harry’s accomplishments torpedoes whatever point she’s aiming for there. It’s the US, not the UK. After 6 years here, opportunities (and connections) would’ve already dried up without some observable measure of success, title or not.
Just to say, Roxanne Gay has written about the Sussexes before for the nyt but it was different writer who profiled Meghan for nymag.
Oh no, what a blunder on my part! Thank you @Jais, and my apologies to Roxane Gay (still think her article in the NYT was snide, though)
I didn’t read snide so much as questioning why they would return to that racist mess, which is what a lot of people here are doing too.
I see that. But returning to the UK racist mess vs. the racist mess on this side of the pond doesn’t really make much difference IMO. The BRF and royal reporting ecosystem have been spinning negative narratives about Diana since her death so I don’t see how that negativity will change. Even if the Sussexes disappeared, the press will make up stories like they are doing now.
The latest NYT Roxanne Gay piece, I think, reflects more of Gay using the Sussexes to frame her main thesis about racism, the monarchy, and British culture. That’s why she gets Meg and Harry wrong. She didn’t interview with M&H. It’s the same problem which is emblematic with such coverage. You aren’t getting direct source quotes to buttress all the analyses and assumptions which these stories are based.
Anonymous sources are prevalent but difficult to believe because there have been too many conflicting or OTT anonymous claims which can’t be verified to bet my morning coffee on. So much is heresay and I’m sorry this isn’t deep throat and Watergate that warrants such secrecy. It’s more about spinning competing PR narratives and the billionaire king and his crown prince son are winning because of their official status and wealth.
If people want to rely on such news coverage, you might as well sign up for subscription tai chi on YT to get your 6 pack abs or lose weight.
So best wishes to the Sussexes in their endeavor.
Suppose scooter plans sneak attacks and sabotages harrys charities. And still want harry to leave his family. Will harry find that it is just as terrible despite the heritage talk. Keen will behave badly to meghan.
Scooter is next and if he succeeds sooner rather than later he may well try to make things miserable
I don’t think they will have much to do with the royal family when they return. I think they will hang out with their UK friends and the Spencer’s and focus on their work and their kids. I can see them, especially Meghan, not giving the BRF the time of day, other than the occasional private visit to Charles.
This seems realistic to me. They can continue to live their lives and go about their business. My father and I are estranged and currently live in the same country yet I manage very well not to have anything to do with him. The press will scream about them regardless, they know that. From their perspective this is wholly different to what they left six years ago.
My thoughts exactly! They’ll steer clear of the malignant duo, W & K. They’re survivors, not masochists!
How exactly are they going to do this? Not go to Christmas or Easter with the rest of the family?
Yeah, I still can’t quite wrap my head around it… on one hand, it would be great to see more of Meghan, but, sadly, I’m pretty sure we won’t see her at all anymore.
I don’t get it, either – how is she supposed to get around safely? She probably won’t even leave the house. It’s going to be such a terribly boring year for us.
I also find it hard to imagine her appearing with Harry in early September. But who knows…
Yeah, just last month she was supposed to do events with Harry and she had to cancel due to security concerns. She probably won’t be seen much, if at all.
I don’t know if we’re going to see her much in the UK. Because I think if she’s out and about before security is really addressed, it’s going to open up criticism that Harry saying his family wasn’t safe without private security was a lie.
We will see whatever she chooses to put on her Instagram. Her choice.
I am completely befuddled. Just does not make sense to me at all. Why on earth would they go back? Meghan escaped with her life. Now they are bringing two innocent children into this quagmire. I need to learn more. Because on the surface it appears they are both gluttons for punishment.
Yes, it’s bonkers to me. Agree that there has to be a good reason underneath, because going back opens them up to abuse beyond imagination from all sides.
I know we live in a hellscape in the USA right now? So the bar for behavior is basically just above hell.
But damn, at least she says it out loud. Stating th horrific racism of the royal family .
It feels kind of pathetic that *that* seems like a win to me, since so much of their coverage is like, well they alleged racism a as if it wasn’t plainly visible to anyone not seeing the world through the lens of white supemacy.
I don’t consider Harry’s charity work to be royal lineage. He built the invictus games. As a former soldier with great means. I think it’s a great life’s work.
I do agree though that it’s going to be a racist press free for all,
And I’ll worry about Meghan and the children’s safety as long as they live there.
I think everybody wants to know why they are moving back. Homesickness, acting roles, etc doesn’t make sense. They could vacation, spend summers in England if Harry misses it. Being closer to Charles doesn’t make sense either. It’s not as if he has any real interest in the Sussex family. For six years Harry and Meghan have said how miserable and toxic the family and media was. It’s bizarre that they are willing to put themselves in that position again for no reason.
They should have put out an official statement with this. All they did was confirm the story. Those that have followed them and have heard what they have said (from their own mouths) about having to leave the UK and how unsafe it is etc are just….confused. An official statement stating why they are moving back would have been nice because the British press are having a free for all. The whole thing is odd especially the silence from them.
I don’t agree, they announced their intention to move back to the UK as private citizens. That ‘is what it is’. The media is doing its most, NYT in particular has had at least three articles pondering ‘their fading dreams, etc.) since the move was announced (why should it warrant more than one in an American news organ?)
Let them yap. While the institutional cabal trying to endanger and put down the achievements of H&M through the media continues, H&M are doing whatever it is they need to do. They should not be baited into tit for tat responses, they should just go about their business while monitoring what BS comes from where.
Damned if they do. Damned if they don’t. Harry (who is fighting for his family’s survival) cannot make the call to abolish the monarchy. And like many of the sandwich generation, he and M probably don’t want to live with the regret of not trying. We have no idea what their inner life may be or what their struggles are, and it seems that Doria supports the temporary move.
Not to conflate my life with the privileged gentry…. GenX and millennials at every income level are making impossible decisions around elderly parents, young children/educational opportunities, and financial stability.
As a Mom who moved back home to take care of parents who were more than difficult, it was not the easiest decision. But I did not want my son to watch me abandon them and live with that regret in my later years. They have since passed, and I’m still not sure I made the right decision for my health and career; most of my friends advised me not to take it on; however, my conscience is clear on that front, and I am now free to make a host of misteps on my own time.
You’ve said this so well, and I agree that the fear of regret is what’s driving this. It’s now or never with Charles.
But I hadn’t really considered that Harry might also have struggled emotionally with being just a “normal” person. Even though it’s the life he wanted and pursued, none of us can really know what it feels like to go from being a literal prince to having to hustle for high profile work. It seems like he was succeeding but this move might indicate that he’s still trapped between two worlds and struggling with it.
I agree with pretty much everything that Roxane Gay says and some of the “bland but endearing” comments seem characteristic of Gay’s writing style in general. She’s never been a soft-focus writer! Gay writes with the expected disappointment and exasperation of watching someone return to a toxic situation … to which, Kaiser writes, they are returning in spite of the facts and experiences accrued since then. That’s frustrating and it’s their decision. I’m rooting for them to be the Most Awesome Working Private Citizens Whose Mediocre Efforts Still Does More Than Working Royals’ Best (I’m still workshopping that).
Agreed. I think many are facinated and disapointed watching this but again, Meghan and Harry must/will make choices they deem best for their family.
They have a lot of people rooting for them even if we aren’t rooting for that racist, exploitative institution to pull them back in.
Yes this is my take too. I read some of her work before so her tone here didn’t seem different or harsher against them than elsewhere.
there’s a lot she says that I don’t agree with, especially her portrayal of Harry as kind of lost and wandering in California, and her line about how they will maybe be able to “finally” make a home for themselves (they have a wonderful home in CA that they are keeping….)
but this is the broader point from her that I do agree with completely – ” race is the proverbial elephant in the room…. This is the power of bigotry: The monarchy has tolerated a breathtaking range of despicable behavior from assorted royals, but what they could not abide is a Black woman.”
Of course people are latching onto her comments about Harry and being royal and all of that. But the racism is the elephant in the room when it comes to the British Royal Family. Racism was the issue 9 years ago and its still the issue today.
But what I will say to counteract that is that they are not going back to the Firm. I feel like that point keeps getting lost even among Sussex supporters. They are going back to the UK and probably want to see what life is like there without being part of the Firm, with having their own press operations, their own financial security, They’re not participating in the rota. And they wont be under the control of the Firm, which would have been the case even if their half in/half out proposal had been accepted. So I think things may play out very differently over the next few months.
The global press is unhinged about this move which is problematic for the leftovers, IMO, because it just proves once again that H&M are the most interesting part of that famiy…..by far.
And again I keep going back and forth here. Part of me is convinced there is a significant behind the scenes reason for this move bc it doesn’t make sense to me otherwise. Buying a house in the UK for extended summer vacations or business trips? Sure. But moving there for a year, putting the kids in school there, etc? That just feels to me like there is something else going on. I said yesterday that maybe this is just as simple as a rich international family buying another international home. And maybe it is. But at the same time I think there is something else going on. Who knows!
Yeah, there were characterizations here that didn’t sit true to me. The racism part did though. As for the rest, we’ll have to see. I tend to lean towards them wanting to create the world they want, one where they can travel between the countries. The move is pushing the security issue and I bet if nothing else that risk assessment finally happens, come what may from that. And then there’s the IG and Charles being sick ofc. Is there something more? Maybe but we’re just gonna have to buckle up to not knowing everything right away.
I think she is expressing many of the reservations that people here have been stating for the last few days.
But my own take is that one of the many reasons to do this now is to get the kids linked to the school network which carries over later on, especially in aristo circles. And they are not letting the UK be William’s. If they can set up something now, with Charles around, then it becomes far more difficult for William to try and do something when he has the top job and they have more solid roots in the UK, especially Meghan. It won’t be easy, but I don’t think Harry wants to give up completely on the UK, which he would if he waited to long and his brother is in charge.
I wonder if there is more than meets the eye with Charles and the Sussexes communicating. I wonder if Charles urged them to come back, and is helping them in any way behind the scenes. After all, Charles is a billionaire. It’s good for Charles’ image and maybe deep inside his chest, there is some sentimentality towards his younger son and younger grandchildren (and to his relief, his grandchildren are lighter than he probably thought…yes, I know…).
If we know that the media reports on Harry and Meghan are lies , how do we know that the stories about the other royals are not lies too ?
I think there has been a lot going on behind the scenes that the press doesn’t know about .
Hopefully Charles has been in touch with Harry a lot more than we will ever know about ,
Meghan gets more criticism. From bots. I think scooter still wants to break up the sussexes and wants harry to be wing man. Charles also had ample time all these years to have a relationship with the sussexes of course harry wants to see charles but should be on the alert and ready to leave the UK if necessary
I’ve been typing and back spacing, typing and back spacing – but, really, I have no clue what’s going on here.
I feel you.
@Eurydice — I’ve just had a thought (shocking, I know lol)
I think this is the Odyssey Summer: Sussex Redux.
Bombshell move, unexpected script, surprise decisions.
Everyone from serious scholars to the most unhinged racist bottom feeders (looking at you, Toxic Tommy et al) all spinning out, spilling hundreds of theories and thousands of words about what is WRONG, what is RIGHT, this will be a TRIUMPH, this will be a FAILURE …
And like the Nolan version of the Odyssey Summer, I predict this one too will be a stunning box office success.
Maybe I’m just a cockeyed optimist.
Only time will tell.
^^100%^^
I just hope Meghan’s nervous system can take this. I cant imagine the ptsd. I hope she has very, very close friends to lean on wherever she ends up moving.
@jes , I have PTSD just thinking about it . But they have every right to live in England on their own terms, not funded by taxpayers , and H is the Kings son for chrissake , not one of the boat people. As long as they are not expected to share the same breathing space as the Waleses just for optics, they should be ok . Thus far and no further. No shuffling behind that useless Middleton at Christmas or Easter or some formal event . Meghan has taken a huge risk exposing herself and kids to these rats ..I hope Harry doesnt expect her to join the circus again . Thats when I would scoop the kids up and leave for good .
“Do I really want to be integrated into a burning house?” Is about Black American integrating/assimilating into American Society. Harry and Meghan don’t appear to want to integrate/assimilate. They want to coexist. People forget, they always wanted a base in the UK. Frogmore was supposed to be that base. Until Charles the Cruel evicted them. So, people think their original goal was dumb? And, circling back to it dumber? I think it’s the height of oppression to let any entity quash your dreams and plans. Also, Harry and Meghan do not owe the public any explanation. They are private citizens.
Excellent!!
100% agree Sonya. “I think it’s the height of oppression to let any entity quash your dreams and plans.” Well said. And Meghan (and Harry) already told us at their wedding: This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine….
Wasn’t it Taylor Swift who said “You don’t owe anybody an explanation,” when defending Lady Gaga from criticism? I’m in that mindset about the Sussexes. I trust them to know what’s best for them. Meghan is a lioness and Harry is a warrior prince (small p, because no matter his title he is a prince in his actions). They’re always interesting and I can’t wait to see what they do next 👍
Great comment.
And yes, frogmore keeps getting forgotten. they always wanted a home base in England. In 2022, they visited England twice over the course of a few months – once for the Jubbly, and once for events around the time of the queen’s death (WellChild, was that One Young World? And I know they went to germany in between then too.)
In hindsight, the eviction from Frogmore might be a blessing. If they had that as a base, they might not have been able to build the independence they have now established. They might have been stuck in the jaws of the vindictive RF, god forbid!
Yeah, agree, @Sonya.
Well stated!
Love what she wrote and she’s echoing what a lot of Black women are saying. And honestly at this point, since they did nothing but put out a statement to People confirming the move, people are going to lean into the RR stories that Harry wasn’t really happy in CA, that he missed the UK, that he wanted his children to have an “English education.” It is, what it is plainly. And I know he’s the CEO of Better Up and doing Invictus, but the fact he’s leaving some organizations makes me wonder what is actually going on. And no, they did not go back so Meghan could act. That is still the most gonzo story ever. Maybe it is as Roxane said, Harry didn’t feel like staying in the U.S. anymore and wanted all that he and his children are entitled to. But they can’t pretend this time they don’t know what they are going to get.
What you said, ChillinginDC. Iawtc
Yeah, I mean, I am still buying from As Ever and support her. But this whole thing really did a number on a lot of people. Primarily because it made way too many articles accurate and now it’s causing a lot of people to question even more things. They don’t want to put out a statement just allows people to write their own narrative. And so far, it seems like Harry doesn’t care about the mental toil this is going to do to Meghan.
I think there might be valid reasons for this move that dont have anything to do with deranger or royalist theories about Harry being desperate to be on the balcony during trooping or anything like that.
But I agree that without an actual statement from the Sussexes (even if I think the People story was largely sourced by them), people are going to fill the vacuum with other theories and stories and the ones that are gaining the most traction right now are the negative ones that fit into those royalist theories.
I’ve said this many times on here over the years (as have many others, including you I think @ChilinginDC and Kaiser) – its not that H&M need to respond to every negative story. But some times a response IS required or else the negative story fills the void and becomes THE story. This is what happened to them when they were working royals and were not allowed to respond. we were all excited when they left bc we thought it meant they would push back. And they have, somewhat (“carnival of so called experts” was an amazing line). But they leave a lot on the table and its only natural that people, supporters and haters alike, are going to draw their own conclusions.
Exactly. It’s baffling. And then People just put out something else. Their comms strategy is a mess. And now we get why they changed things with Archwell, staff left, etc. If plans were really in place for a year, it all makes sense in a morbid kind of way.
@Becks1 It is quite possible that the Sussexes might be prevented from dispelling the rumors at this point.
IF it comes to pass that the reason they’re relocating “temporarily for an extended period”, is because Charles and the government wants Harry on hand to act as Regent for Georgie until he turns 18, then any announcement would have to wait until the government’s ducks were in a row (both the dignified and the efficient, to quote Bagehot).
To set aside William, three people minimum have to certify that he’s unfit, per Regency Acts. Assuming that task can be completed, Government and Charles would then need to make an official address to the public. (Oh, to see the Rota Rodents’ faces that day)
So H&M may just be waiting for that to unfold through the official channels.
If there’s not to be a regency, then they’re probably going to lay low, focus on themselves, the kids, let Harry get his dad time with Charles, do his charity events locally, and leave for Montecito directly after the funeral.
Harry needs to maintain
I want Meghan to continue to post on her IG account when she’s there. And show daily life there. It will normalize them much more than the rest of the family can or dares to do.
Harry needs to maintain “domiciled in the UK” status to remain a councillor of state , but doesn’t need a physical house there to achieve that.
There is no way that Harry is going to be regent to Prince George @Wheresmytiara.
I agree completely, @ChillinginDC. This move is baffling and will lose them a lot of supporters if they do not put out a more logical reason for their decision. Now some may say “who cares, they can do what they want, they don’t need to explain themselves” and while strictly speaking that is true, it will bite them in the butt when inevitably everything goes south in the UK. Because many people supported them due to the extreme racism Megan faced and continued to face at the hands of the UK press and in the UK. But if they go back and get the same treatment, many people will logically say “well what did you think would happen?” and “you brought it on yourselves by letting the scorpion sting you again.” And once it gets pointed at their kids, it will be even worse. Because putting their children into the direct line of fire will be their doing entirely. If they think they can avoid that via any agreements with Charles or the press they are worse than naive, they are stupid. The UK press and William will find a way. They are fools for doing this.
I also think this is the beginning of the end for them. Megan will eventually walk to protect her children. Harry is proving he cares more about his parents’ lineage than his children’s future.
But he *may* need to be present to serve some legal function of the process of installing whoever would become George’s regent…
Also a cigar could just be a cigar: Harry has Invictus commitments for the upcoming Birmingham games and a base in the UK serves that and other, unspecified purposes in a time frame that has to account for their children’s educational needs.
H&M have explained and clarified their lives multiple times but those explanations have been wholly ignored by the media for years. I don’t know why people believe that will ever change or the Sussexes will find that ‘one neat trick’ that will magically make the BM and their proxies halt their campaign, like when has that ever happened? Never. They have an agenda, with the backing of BRF and the BM, and patient explanations aren’t going to move the needle to sanity from these people.
I think that is what is going on with a lot of people commenting here and writing articles who are not RR. It’s confusing to all of us why they would walk her back into a place that almost caused her to commit suicide. It has not gotten better since she left, it’s gotten worse. There’s credible threats on their lives and their kids based on what came out a few months ago. I just don’t really see the big reason for this outside of Harry wanted it.
British and American couple plan to spend more time in uk after years in USA. Could this relocation be as simple as that?
The wire release said they were keeping their Montecito home & that this stay is for an extended period. Perhaps how they intend to live will be no different to what other transatlantic couples like Zendaya and Tom Holland, john Krasinski & Emily Blunt etc do & how I think George Clooney and Amal did until they left USA altogether for France, which is split time between uk & usa.
As I keep saying if it wasn’t for the security issue after they were evicted from Frogmore they probably would have set up an uk base earlier. Throughout the security court case Harry openly said about wanting to spend time in uk with his family securely, loving & missing his country. Just because we discourse about shutter island didn’t mean he/they feel the same. Harry & Meghan have never indicated that they were reversing on their 2020 desire to split time between both their countries. The security battle was over right to be in uk safely. I’m probably in a minority but I respect fact Harry is fighting against allowing the palace to exile him & his family using security especially when he has done nothing wrong.
In terms of why now after the security case loss Harry said he would continue to lobby the uk government. It is obvious that since he said bbc interview that he wasn’t trying to beef with his family anymore & since he met his father last year that the hardline RAVEC stance has shifted (what a coincidence 😒) with briefings of the long awaited risk assessment finally happening. One reason the govt claimed for case by case security is that Harry didn’t live in uk. Well now he says he’s relocating to uk they will likely actually have to address it, not least because it risks disruptions etc for those around them.
The Labour govt & ex home officer ministers are suddenly briefing about Harry should have security- my guess is they are readying the public for a decision that has already been made now that palace people are apparently no longer blocking. So as much as I don’t like it, as much as Charles deserves nothing & as much as it shows what a medieval country the uk still is, Harry making peace with Charles may have made a difference. And given that he may never make peace with the next monarch & Charles is an elderly man living with cancer, imho makes sense to establish the uk presence now.
On the basis of the facts we have now, their comms has said they are keeping Montecito home, Meghan is continuing with As ever, Archewell productions & philanthropies will keep us base & BP has said they aren’t returning to public duties. Background briefing to places like the BBC & ITV is saying this is temporary. Of course things may change and if some of these facts do then I will 100% understand the concern & apprehension. But if it is that they just split time between uk & USA like they said they wanted to back in 2020, some of these articles, including post mortems on their time in USA, may be premature. Travalyst is due to have a presence at UN week in September so Harry may be in NYC in just a few weeks & as far as I’m aware they still have Netflix content projects in development.
I think those who are like why go back to more press bashing are not aware or are underplaying that press smears followed them to the USA even if not as pervasive in mainstream USA press as the uk. Or did we forget that the Hollywood reporter did a whole piece with crap sourcing claiming Meghan was a bully & a dictator in heels that could have been a Fail article. Even the THR’s recent article on the gentleman & Meghan only uses Tina brown’s substack as a source which is against usual journalistic standards. Murdoch has his tentacles everywhere so just last year Meghan had to refute their article insinuating that she stole a dress which is one of the most inflammatory articles about Meghan ever.
Roxanne seems to think that Harry has been in California twiddling his thumbs with no direction & no achievements but where did she get that idea? I’m assuming she doesnt read British tabloids so could it be she got that notion from US outlets like vanity fair which have been pushing this? Which goes to my point that the US media has joined in with the hitpieces and smears.
Whilst bullying press hasn’t & won’t change, their circumstances have. They can freely choose to push back on lies eg pushing back on Tina brown’s African child nonsense last winter or about the BP accommodation stuff a few weeks ago in a way they couldn’t whilst under palace control eg Meghan made Kate cry lie. Also Meghan was strongly advised against suing whilst a taxpayer funded royal & the press clearly got assurances they could do what they want with her which is why the Fail unlawfully published her letter which their lawyer would have advised of the risk of at the time. Even whilst in the palace, against their advice & at a traumatic time for her, Meghan still went ahead and sued the Fail & won. She also sued a media agency out of business in the us for illegal pictures of Archie. Unlike before, the press are on notice that the Sussexes can & will sue.
I think there may also be a presumption that nasty press since living in USA hasn’t impacted Meghan’s wellbeing but it may well have also presented its challenges for all we know. Remember after the NYC car chase Harry and Meghan disappeared for a while & Meghan has been pictured in Montecito with stress patches. However, unlike before Meghan doesn’t need to go to the palace for permission and can get the mental health support that she wants (if necessary). And if things get too much in uk in a way that affects her she has her own homes away from the uk she can go to.
Finally, it may be that after a decade of abuse & trolling, Meghan has more tools & is in a much healthier place in terms of how she navigates trolling etc which she herself said in Australia- is never going to change and she just has to live with that. Meghan is constantly body shamed & yet posted swimsuit pictures in recent weeks. She’s a brave woman but as Audra McDonald said I wish she didn’t have to be.
Could it be for tax break reasons? after being in the US for six years? i’ve not heard much about this theory but could be possible.
This is a very real possibility. Follow the money. It makes as much sense as anything else.
I do think that this move back is about Harry rather than them as a couple. I think it is a compromise from Meghan and will help them figure out what they want for their lives and their marriage.
Different day, same story. Harry is moving back for family and country. Meghan is going to support Harry. Harry has Invictus and the Spencers. Meghan has As ever, Archie and Lili. William and Kate don’t want to see Harry and Meghan and the feeling is probably mutual. For now the narrative favors Harry and as a result he doesn’t need to offer an official reason for the relocation. Meghan, otoh, is being asked to justify her ‘participation’, with the largest voice coming from her fans.
But Harry and Meghan aren’t returning to the royal fold, they are simply moving, for an undetermined amount of time to England. This article is really representative of so many faux-concern articles being written, whose main intent is to undermine the Sussex’s decisions, and to cause those who support them to start questioning their support, to cause descent in the ranks, so to speak.
I don’t see Meghan returning to the royal fold at all but Harry….yeah I see it. Even if it’s part time I definitely see it. I never thought they would move back to the UK and enroll their kids in school there but here we are.
I honestly never thought through all this that they would avoid the UK forever, Meghan included. I always thought they should secure their own property and wanted Meghan to reconnect with her independent charities. I hope they hold on to the portions of the life they built here in California because they worked really hard for that independence. If they’d been planning this for some time, Meghan has been stressing financial independence on her podcast appearances.
Considering the RR was reporting about Project Thaw last year, I think everyone, fans and derangers included need to prep for seeing Harry out walking about with Charles and other members of the Royal Family.
I do believe that this whole “move for an extended period” thing is Harry’s idea. He can’t let go of (the weight ánd grandness) his royal status, all together. All that going back and forward in the last five years, and constantly wanting to prove his worth for Britain and the RF, with massive £Mill donations and his charity work, is proof of that, I think.
Meghan can do without her royal status/titles pretty well. I think she has become indifferent to that family, she didn’t feel welcomed after all, and I don’t think they will ever respect and accept her for who she is. She has peace with that, I think. She therefore will continue to build her own life independent from the Windsor clan. She has built a whole ass million dollars brand on her own little-free name in just over 1,5 years. And before that, some pretty impactful Netflix Productions, incl. her Emmy nominated show, and two award winning podcasts. On her own she won five awards and accolades (and together with Harry four more) just in five years, despite all the hatred, harrasment, and the attempts by the British press and the RF to break and destroy her.
But I think, to safe her marriage, she has to let Harry test this extended stay out, to make up his mind for good, while his father is still alive (the one person left, who his real attachment to that scandelous family is based on).
I mean she’s been succeeding at so much. I think the RR was going to lose it when they saw her jam sales were like $34 million dollars. She’s good. If he wants to reconcile with his dogshit father (TM Kaiser) that’s on him.
That’s the deranger take as well. Lol
Harry doesn’t support a racist, colonial org., he supports the crown which he believes can do good l. It’s a different point of view.
Likely the wanted to leave U.S. for about a year for tax reasons. Couldn’t go to Canada as there’s no support for security and it’s distant from his travel destinations this tear.
Ridiculous to go to European continent as it complicates kids schools AND..
He needs a foothold in England now before his dad dies. He wants to clearly show he wasn’t exiled.
He needs that foothold as a base for himself and his kids – if he doesn’t do it now, the Sussex family and kids would be treated as interlopers in future trips or as if they were trying to glom on to Willy and family.
It’s basically the best time – or leave his kids to appear as interlopers if they chose to visit l.
Also, his dad is in poor health.
and to repeat, Willy isn’t king
@CWS
I agree. I think this is mostly about the children. No one can predict what will happen, but imagine telling the kids about their royal ancestry, but having to say we left all that behind. It didn’t work out. I think they would resent it in the end. This way the kids will have much more of an opportunity to choose their own paths.
Even if the kids might want to be “working royals” Uncle William might not let them. They really don’t have a choice if he refuses . It could be they could resent being told they had choices and not alerting them to possibility that Uncle William would not give them the opportunity.
@MU Yes, to me this is a tax issue and his charities require a lot of visits this year.
Plus it’s his home country, he has to stake a claim for himself or his kids so they can travel all they want. And that’s just travel, nothing about Harry’s relatives.
If the kids were kept outside UK, it would be as if they were exiled. That isn’t true and it isn’t reasonable.
This way, if either travels there in their 20s or later, etc. it shouldn’t be a big deal
Harry leaving the royal institution and the UK did not turn him into an anti-mornachist or revolutionary. Harry wanted to be able to carve out a meaningful role for him and Meghan within the royal institution and the same institution denied him this opportunity.
I stil try to get my head about Harry and Meghan returning to the UK, now and after all what happened. I always believe that Harry’s persistance to reconcile with Charles has a lot to do with Archie and Lilibet, acknowledgement and validation of their status in the royal family, line of succession, British society and Archie’s and Lilibet’s knowledge, connection and awareness of their history.
I also think there is much more behind Harry and Meghan’s return to the UK and a lot what we do not know about that. This does not mean a return to the royal “fold” or any official duty. They have carved out their own life.
However Harry and Meghan are not the same people who left the UK, especially Harry has grown and matured over the last six years. And the UK has also changed, not necessarily to the best.
Yeah, no, I don’t know – I think she mischaracterizes Harry? He’s been doing plenty of substantive work for years. Maybe what she’s reacting to is the whimsy, which both he & Meghan share a propensity for, for better or worse – whimsy doesn’t easily translate to solid, workable ideas re: podcasts, streaming content etc. The U.S. puts up with a lot of whimsy from famous directors and a certain fat cheesy “president” but we’re not used to princes. The great challenge of the Sussexit situation has been them leaving an extremely structured, ancient, traditional and very confining model for something to be structured and built by themselves on the fly. They’ve had to be trailblazers, which by nature is a learning process with the potential for plenty of errors and misfires. The greatest challenge seems to have been how to juggle being private real people vs. public figures, or even figureheads – the little-brother prince and his love-match bride from a clashing culture, like Romeo and Juliet. It’s like a myriad of constantly shifting templates over them as they live and move in real space. I think they’ve done incredibly well with an almost impossible set of challenges to navigate and try to master. Roxanne Gay seems to brush over the fact that Meghan made a CHOICE when she married Harry. It’s not that she should have been expected to know about and put up with the flagrant racism, but that she UNDERSTOOD that Harry was a royal prince, his grandmother was queen, and his father would eventually be king. Something about that was clearly very OK with her and not enough to turn her off from making the commitment to joining her life with Harry’s and becoming a royal herself. I’m a Meghan fan but I don’t see her as a big rebel and iconoclast, I see her as a traditionalist, someone who loves traditions and classic things and I can easily imagine that her respect for the institution of monarchy that Harry was born into, and her own children were born into, is real. Yes, it’s a burning house, but on the other hand, so is almost everywhere a burning house these days. The U.S. is a big ole burning house too. I think whatever drove their decision, they didn’t make it to solve world problems for the rest of us. They made it for extremely personal reasons for themselves and their two children. It’s just sad and exhausting that they’re always being blamed for the burning down of the house across the pond, when they’re not the ones. It may never work out for them in the UK but as a family, they’ll probably never regret doing this for their children – my long, wordy take.
Just a few days ago he was in my area visiting Walter Reed hospital and Arlington cemetery. He made a lot of injured soldiers happy at the hospital, talking about Invictus. He looked like a leader, positive.
I’m tired about the “lost Harry” diatribe, as if he were 8 years old.
A thousand likes to Roxane Gay’s analysis. Beautifully written. 💯 truth.
The reactions to Gay’s comments seem to be based broadly on how people feel about the monarchy. For those who still have a basic belief in its usefulness and its normalcy, Gay’s comments seem insulting and even over the top. They do not think the house is burning. But for those of us who are deeply opposed to all it stands for (and it does stand for racism and classism), this is the well written piece we have waited for. Her understanding that Harry probably has never felt he fits in here in the States because people do not think he is special here and react quite differently is a particularly important insight into why it is so important to him to return to the UK. He may never be a working royal again, but in the UK, he will always be treated as royal because he is the King’s son.
I agree with you. And since everyone seems to be saying that Harry wasn’t happy, it makes it easy to point to, he wasn’t happy being treated just like Harry though he said that’s what he wanted.
But based on people who have actually met Harry, that is not true of his behavior or his expectations or anything. I get that you are anti monarchy (I am as well although maybe not as ardently), but saying that Harry didnt like the States because he doesnt feel special here and people dont react to him the way he expects just goes against what people who actually KNOW him and met him have said.
(and frankly I dont even know where the idea comes from that he doesn’t feel special here, because he is treated like an A list celebrity in all his public appearances. I cant speak for every interaction obviously but he seems to be highly sought after and well received by audiences and organizations.)
i know you’re leaning really hard into this idea that Harry is secretly dying to be king, but the actual facts just don’t bear it out. He is still among the world’s wealthy and elite. He still moves in elite circles. He’s still sought after. The idea that he’s moving back to the UK because he wants people to bow and scrape to him is…..kind of silly, to be honest.
@Becks: you’re correct that Harry seems much more down-to-earth and normal than the stiff and stodgy Left Behinds. That’s what throws folks off. He has Diana’s easy charm and charisma. He never acts like he thinks he’s special. And maybe it’s not even conscious with him. But being treated like an A list celebrity in the States is in no way like being treated as a prince of the blood in Great Britain. We probably can’t understand it because we’ve never experienced that kind of treatment. People don’t curtsy, bow, and stammer incoherently when they meet us. They don’t call us Your Royal Highness. I agree with Gay. It’s just not the same kind of respect and honor. And we can’t comprehend it. It doesn’t make him evil or dishonest. It was drummed into him from birth and a few years in California can never cancel out such a thorough “brainwashing”. But his “brand” as a royal is quite different than wanting bowing and scraping.
I think William is the brother who expects everyone to bow & scrape to him, laugh at his jokes, tell him his ideas are so brilliant, etc.. Harry spent–what was it? ten years in the Army?–time with regular Joes in a combat zone. The only deference shown him would have been one of military rank, not social/royal rank. Harry spent time hanging with his surfer buddies out at that surf ranch. Surfers are so laid-back, there’s no way Harry would still be expecting the bowing & scraping he grew up with, which was actually so much less than what William grew up with.
Is anyone really finding comfort in the idea of some major ‘reveal’ that will explain and make sense of why this is happening? From royal psychic predictions to Harry’s appointment as regent, the idea that there is more going on than we (the public) know is nothing new. We still don’t know what cancer issue Kate had and that was two years of wasted speculation. Are we going to spend the next year asking the same questions over and over again and waiting for an answer that will never come?
@Donety agreed 💯 I think something major is happening behind the scenes. Will is running out of road and has been assessed over the last 6 years as being unable and incapable of being a proper monarch. I am expecting a sabbatical to be announced for both PoWs and reaction of BM will be crucial to determining whether an abdication can happen to save the monarchy. Then other arrangements will need to be put in place subject to KC’s health. Next few years are going to get messy!
Harry possibly being regent is the only reason that this move, however temporary, makes sense to me.
Is Billy the Basher worse than we know?
*Me sitting here with my tinfoil hat*
One thing I wonder: has William ever attended the Privy Council meetings with his dad, to learn how to do his future job?
Has he refused to show? Because that would be a pretty big disrespect and an enormous red flag to the government regarding William’s commitment and capabilities.
I still think it’s Beatrice for regent.
But that doesn’t preclude ‘needing’ H on hand in some legally defined capacity to install whoever a regent might be.
Eh, Beatrice is the one who advised her father on that train wreck of a TV interview, so I think not.
“Beatrice is the one who advised her father on that train wreck of a TV interview”
I don’t think that’s a deal breaker.
I still think she’s the most likely candidate, should there be a regency.
If it is something major related to the royal family, we will inevitably find out (like if Charles dies in 6 month, then all of a sudden this move will make sense.)
You make a good point, @Donety!
I love Roxane Gay’s writing and she was spot-on about the racism of the BRF, but she missed the mark on Harry. And a bit of writer’s envy was evident in her description of the prose in “Spare” as “utilitarian.”
I do think her column captured the trepidation many of us feel about what this return is going to mean for Meghan. I’m trying not to be parasocial, but thinking of Meghan maybe having to disappear for her own safety while in England makes me a little ill.
Oh, I think she sees Harry quite clearly. He is still royal to his core. That matters to him.
This part. Harry’s core identity is being a royal and being the most popular royal. That’s no longer the case and hope he recognizes it. I think he was very sincere in thinking that exposing the palaces indifference and hoe the UK press operates would lead to positive changes and reform. His losing this last lawsuit has shown they never will. This is a pessimistic column but this is our world right now. The good guys aren’t winning. Meghan should not shrink herself or want these people to accept her because they never will. I hope this isn’t another version of John and Carolyn Kennedy because they should both know better snd are older snd wiser.
You’re right, Brassy Rebel.
And that doesn’t reflect well on him. It was easier to ignore this fact about him when he was in California, I guess.
If being royal mattered that much to Harry he would not have walked away 6 years ago. He would have told Meghan to suck it up and deal with it because he was a royal and this was his life and that was that and there were no other options.
He is obviously a monarchist, he has said that himself, so I dont get all this vitriol aimed his way over the last week from some on here acting like harry is betraying them by NOT being an antimonarchist.
he is a royal, whatever we think that mean to him, but he left the institution. Now we can never say never and maybe he ends up as a working royal again which will be….disappointing but right now we dont know that’s what’s happening.
He just walked away from the UK and being a “working” royal (although none of them work). He never walked away from the institution or his place in it. In his own mind and belief system, he is still very much royal. And I fully acknowledge how hard it must be to walk away from all that.
I have a collection of therapeutic catchphrases I rely on heavily on a daily basis and the one that best fits 98 percent of what I’ve read about this situation is : “It’s really easy to be good at other people’s lives.”
(Maybe I should trademark it🤣.)
That is a good one!
Why does it have to be that Harry is dragging Meghan along? Why can’t it be that they are in a strong enough place together that they can face the demons for a little while to accomplish whatever their goal is? I don’t see one making a decision for the other that they know will hurt them. This feels intentional and thought-out.
Going only on what we know from history, if you were Meghan would you ever approach Harry and say, “hey, let’s move to england”?
Meghan is a 45 year old woman. Yes, I can see it. You don’t have to be rich royal to say it either
“Why does it have to be that Harry is dragging Meghan along? Why can’t it be that they are in a strong enough place together that they can face the demons for a little while to accomplish whatever their goal is?”
For the same reason American and BM outlets insist the Sussexes are failing when M is literally up for a Daytime Emmy, they have produced a well received documentary about Girl Scout Cookies Season and have various projects in development. They want to control the narrative against all reasonable proof H&M are fine and thriving on their own.
Harry has respect for his veterans projects. As Ever is a thriving business. There is no ‘failure’ over them but the powers that be demand everyone insist they are cowed. H&M being clear eyed, working in unison and meeting their commitments in the country of his birth should not be an issue. That’s a BM/BRF ‘them problem’ and they try to control and flood the zone with a narrative that points fingers at Harry, or at Meghan , or them as a couple instead of examining the institution that’s causing the problems, issues and feeding the media narrative against the Sussexes. How much British taxpayers money funds SM bots? How do you complete a security review when the self same government in charge of that review has its monarchy putting forth resources towards the goal of endangering them? Don’t ask those questions, just blame Harry.
I don’t like how she’s being framed as this victim about to be sacrificed on the altar of Harry’s privilege. I don’t think he was that unhappy. Harry was very much welcomed here in the USA and had a lot of opportunities and growth he would never have had in the UK. Invictus is where it is today because he left the Royal fold. This is something they both obviously either wanted or felt the need to do. What does it say about all of us that it is getting such a massive amount of outsize scrutiny. We have always amplified this couple, for both good and bad, and want them to be larger than life. They can’t have a few successes and failures. It has to be number one, everything had to be perfect, everyone has to like them, they can’t change but they have to save the monarchy and uplift Britain, but not overshadow anyone. That’s a tall order, especially through the lens of race, class, feminism etc.
🎯
I really think the thing we don’t know is Charles’ health. And to me, him still battling cancer plus his age – maybe the news is worse? Given their resources, trying a year in England when the kids are little makes sense esp if Harry was planning to go back for Invictus prep often. I also wonder about Portugal and connection to Eugenie – and the new baby – maybe those kids are very close too?
The thing I don’t like about the Roxane Gay article is that it validates the old tabloid narrative that everything the Sussexes have done in civilian life has been a failure, and that they supposedly need to be royal adjacent to stay relevant. That narrative is false, and it’s disappointing to see an American writer and an American newspaper so influenced by toxic British propaganda.
Kayleigh Donaldson had a great article about this someone just sent me.

“Don’t be defeatist, dear, it’s very middle class.” –Dowager Duchess of Grantham, Downton Abbey 🤣
Excellent piece. Thanks, Chilling. Especially appreciated this line about Meghan:
“They never stopped treating her as public enemy number one, as the ultimate goldmine of hot takes and dog-whistles that allowed them to glory in taking a Black woman down a peg or two.”
That’s the truth.
Welcome @QuiteContrary and I agree it was a really excellent piece. She’s written articles before I believe about Meghan and how messed up the UK is in general in matters of race and their hatred towards Meghan. And calls out people like Jeremy Clarkson and others.
The second paragraph is wrong, I think.
I don’t think people are giving enough weight to the fact that life in the US under Trump might not be a place where they want to raise their kids.
I think it’s a terrible take. The majority of us are stuck here & it behooves us all to work to right the great wrong currently perpetrated by the trump admin rather than run away & let others deal with it.
I mean, most others don’t have the Heritage Foundation grousing over the husband’s visa or have NewsNation and Murdoch aligned talking heads criticizing them by name incessantly either.
I said at the time that if it were me, I would be done with the racist, sexist, institution of royalty and peerages, where people (mostly men) are given unearned privileges for being born with the correct blood. And that while it was their choice, I would have like the Sussexes to eschew any racist/sexist institution or titles. I was called a racist for saying that, because people thought I secretly wanted Meghan stripped of her titles. Well, too bad, because I still feel the same way.
I think the framing of ‘want to’ is incorrect and even disingenuous. They are inextricably part of the institution. Meghan through marriage, the children by blood as Harry is a son of CIII. That fact is what it is and should not bar them from existing in his home country
Their return to the UK, living in a private capacity with no return to royal duties is not unreasonable.
I agree that Harry is much more attached to his home country, his roots, and his family. But I’m not convinced Meghan is in a completely opposite position. She has mainly denounced how they were treated, particularly by the media, rather than rejecting that world itself. That is why I think they may share a certain naivety about the world they entered.
They may not have fully understood the racial, systemic, imperial, and historical dynamics surrounding the monarchy and the wider British establishment.
Something Meghan said in Harry & Meghan particularly makes me wonder about this. She explained that before Harry, she had not really been treated as a Black woman. I don’t question her personal experience, but it makes me wonder how fully she understood systemic and institutional racism, which goes beyond individual experiences and is embedded in structures and relationships of power.
This is also why her role within the monarchy and especially the Commonwealth troubles me. As a prominent biracial figure, she could, intentionally or not, help present an image of modernity, diversity, and inclusion, potentially softening the image of the monarchy’s imperial and neocolonial legacy without fundamentally changing its deeper structures.
That is the contradiction I struggle with. Even if they never officially return to the Royal Family, they can still come back to the heart of that system. James Baldwin’s question seems particularly relevant: “Do I really want to be integrated into a burning house?”
I’m not saying Meghan consciously agreed to be used in this way. I can’t know her intentions; I can only look at her choices. But accepting that role makes me wonder whether she fully understood these racial and imperial dynamics. That is what I mean by a certain naivety, both on her part and Harry’s.
So I wouldn’t be so categorical about Meghan never wanting anything to do with that world again. If she accepted that role at the beginning of their engagement, I don’t find it impossible that she might one day make compromises for her husband and consider returning to the UK.
For me, the real question is not whether they love each other or whether Harry loves his country. It is whether they truly understood the system they entered—and whether they are fully equipped to navigate a system shaped by racism, classism, imperial history, and deeply rooted structures of power.
Great analysis on the role of the monarchy & ‘commonwealth’. I personally was glad that the BRF couldn’t swallow its bigotry & therefore have Meghan as its ‘diverse face’ in the commonwealth. Even so I don’t think that would have slowed the demands for restorative justice and apologies that we have seen rise after the brief reckoning following George Floyd’s death.
Meghan said on Oprah that she regretted trusting the palace & unlikely their behaviour since the interview has improved that view to consider going back to royal duties. She also has her own commercial projects with contractual obligations & investments like OneOff so hard to imagine her foregoing those to be under palace control again.
And if people like William don’t want Harry back doing duties they want Meghan even less.
agreed. in the documentary, meghan laments that she couldn’t have done more as part of the commonwealth work because it would have been helpful to have a person of color representing the monarchy as part of the family. this reads as incredibly naive at best because the institution itself represents a lack of equality, and while she could perhaps do some further non-profit work, it would be about making things look better in the short term symbolically, not materially improving conditions or any systems.
the andrew of it all will also be coming back around sooner than later, and the republic protests have stepped up, and being associated with the institution means being connected to that. they literally were able to be distanced from that while in california, but it will be much harder while in the uk.
Huh. This was a very well written article from the NYT.
Occam’s razor – Harry’s immigration/visa status prompted the hasty decision to return to UK albeit short-term. Some people (depending on the case) applying for change of visa status or fixing visa issues have to go back to home country.
