Bristol Palin made over a quarter of a million in 2009 representing abstinence

TMZ has the news that young mom Bristol Palin, 20, made a jaw-dropping $262,000 in 2009 for her role as some kind of abstinence ambassador for Candies. She’s still working for them to this day and just put out an awful PSA a few months ago with The Situation. Bristol was paid quite a bit more last year for her long running stint on Dancing With The Stars and for speaking engagements, with her fee verified as at least $14,000 and rumored to be as high as $30,000 an appearance. She’s since purchased a home outright. This example of 21st century nepotism at its finest isn’t going away anytime soon. Bristol has a memoir coming out this summer.

Here’s TMZ’s report on Bristol’s payday in 2009. It’s probably safe to assume she made more than this last year:

Bristol Palin BANKED more than $262 thousand in 2009, for her role as a spokesperson for a teen pregnancy prevention campaign.

The former “Dancing With The Stars” contestant became an ambassador for The Candie’s Foundation in 2009 when she was 18 … just a few months after giving birth to her son, Tripp … and according to tax documents, the job PAID OFF.

The foundation’s website says Bristol “plays an important role by helping other teens understand the incredible challenges teen parents face, and encouraging them to wait until they are socially and financially independent to start their families.”

According to the website, Bristol is still working for the organization.

So all you have to do to get rich is to have a famous controversial mom, an (arguably) likable personality and the gumption to believe you’re qualified to represent something you’ve publicly failed at. It also doesn’t hurt if you can dance, but obviously that’s not what led Bristol to this payday back in 2009. At least she’s going to college and aspiring for some kind of media career. She’ll have something to fall back on when her mom is no longer the poster girl for Fox News. I would say I’m looking forward to Sarah Palin fading away, but someone will take her place for sure. I learned my lesson from Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian. We thought Paris was annoying, but we didn’t know the half of it.

OMFG! I am really trying to decrease my caffine intake but this is not helping.

If Bristol did not become pregnant, she would have had many thinking that she was really into the Abstinence thing … she is all talk the talk but not walking the walk…B.S.

Spokes-person my arse…and making money for no good reason.

I really don’t like this chic (I don’t hate her, she just annoys the hell out of me)

  2. embertine says:

“to believe you’re qualified to represent something you’ve publicly failed at”

Fantastic! I think I’ll become a spokesperson for walking on water, because this one time, I walked into a lake and totally sank!

    LOL, CB.

  3. mew mew says:

Good for her making a fortune by BS. Bad for those who pay her that fortune.

Besides, abstinence just creates more problem. People want to have sex, they always will. I’m sure Bristol could tell us about that in her great wisdom. How about considering for once giving proper information, teaching responsibility and handing out condoms.

  4. carrie says:

wait! that want to say she’s 20 and she doesn’t sex or she’s 20,she sex with protection and she said “wait the marriage for sex”?

  5. lisa says:

so are we supposed to believe that when she reunited with her ‘baby daddy’, they weren’t like a couple of bunnies?!?!? They couldn’t abstain when she was in highschool, but now all of a sudden she can abstain.
This just makes me so angry.

  6. Gwen says:

    What a joke!

  7. OriginalGracie says:

I am constantly confused by Bristol because just from a physical standpoint, I think she is absolutely beautiful.

She is very photogenic and I like to see her pictures.

On the other hand, she is a tool of her mother, spouting these right wing ideas of chastity and all that holy bullshit.

BUT, to be fair: people are willing to pay her to speak, to write, to give her thoughts and feelings in an interview.
She has a child to raise. I don’t think any of us would turn down that opportunity and that cash, so I can’t condemn her.

  8. liz says:

When Palin fades, Michelle Bachmann will be right there will her idiocies. The symbol of the idiotic American, subservient and poorly educated woman will always be here. Unfortunately, this woman is also louder than the Michelle Obamas.

  9. Maddie says:

Look I’m happy she made money by showing teenagers that just because she come from money or have a famous family that it’s ok to have a kid.

She has the support system, while normal teenagers looking for love and coming home from a hospital a single mother is far from her spectrum at least she can tell and show them that it’s still hard on her.

All those kids from MTV Teen Mom shows will grow up on the bottom side of the economic pool, no college, minimum wage jobs, working paycheck to paycheck, going on welfare.

Teenage moms and their kids will more than likely repeat their mom’s life because that is all that they know.

  10. Kitten says:

I don’t hate her as much as I hate her mom. That’s the nicest thing I could come up with…

  11. NayNay says:

I am actually dumbfounded by this. There are no words….

  12. tapioca says:

“to believe you’re qualified to represent something you’ve publicly failed at”

But on the other hand, would you pay more or less attention to an anti-drugs message from Lindsay Lohan, than, say, Hilary Duff?

And you can’t say that abstinence isn’t a 100% effective contraceptive!

  13. Nanea says:

I don’t get how organizations would hire someone like her. She didn’t abstain, she has no education, only a mother that sadly became famous for having visions – seeing Russia.

Are those people willing to spend money on her all intellectually challenged?

  14. bunkins says:

    UGH.

  15. sassenach says:

Did anyone happen to read that her “non profit” for teen pregnancy prevention actually paid her seven times what it contributed to her “cause”

  16. Estelle says:

Frankly, this inspires me. Work with what you have.

  17. journey says:

the only bristol palin memoir i’d be interested in would be a mommy dearest tell-all.

  18. texasmom says:

Hmm. Abstinence is the sure-fire way to not get pregnant or catch an STD. I sure don’t mind mentioning it as a great option to today’s youth. My problem is that instead of teaching abstinence as ONE OPTION, the folks who push abstinence generally insist on ABSTINENCE ONLY education. I think learning about controlling your fertility and how to protect yourself from disease is the most important thing a young woman can learn. For her whole life. I mean, as a parent, I would like my daughters to postpone sex for a good while, but I accept that at some point they WILL HAVE SEX and they need to know how to take care of themselves in that regard. If I don’t clue them in, they’re likely to end up like, er, Bristol, only poor and unappreciated.

  19. serena says:

She pisses me off, but at least I don’t hate her like I do with her mother, that idiot promoting idiocy.
Anyway she’s a total hypocrite, independence my ass.

  20. What a Rip! says:

What’s worse is that this pathetic moron got paid SEVEN TIMES what her organization actually spent on grants to actual teen pregnancy health and counseling clinics! Sounds like a nice scam to me!
    http://thinkprogress.org/2011/04/05/bristol-palin-profiteer-teen-pregnancy

  21. Whatever says:

What kind of moronic neo con bullshit organization is this? Shouldn’t they be using their money to help poor teen moms or fund prevention programs that may actually help prevent pregnancies? No! Instead take the money and give it to some chick from a rich family who got knocked up in high school. Great ‘charity’. Yeah, sounds like something the Palin’s would be involved with. Shady.

  22. Ivy says:

I love it – and a 20-year old earning $270K a year for getting herself knocked up and staying unmarried isn’t an incentive for other teenagers to do the same exactly why now?!?!

  23. Melanie says:

As bad as it gets in the economy and foreign wars, I just thank God that Palin is not the vice president right now. @ Whatever, Please don’t think that teabaggers want to help pregnant teens. They don’t.

  24. Bodhi says:

I’m pregnant, will someone pay me 262K for it??

    Oh, wait, I’m 28 & have been married for 2.5 years… never mind…

I’m all for making money when & how you can (within reason, of course), but the fact that people are willing to pay her hand over fist for something she is an OBVIOUS hypocrite about makes me ragey.

I have to say, I’m with in the “don’t hate her as much as her mama” camp. She came off has sorta likable on her mom’s little show

  25. lucy2 says:

Wow, that organization is useless! If they cared so much about it, they’d put all their money into programs, and would look for VOLUNTEER spokespeople.

I don’t blame her for taking advantage of opportunities, I just think it completely cancels out her message of “my life is so hard, don’t do it!”

  26. meg says:

As if we needed more proof that America is going down the crapper…

  27. garvels says:

Hi Liz-With all due respect why was it necessary to ridicule Michelle Bachman? Michelle is a tax litigator, business owner, has raised over 10 foster children in addition to her own children. Look up her biography. Michelle and candidates like Ron Paul have lead the cause for fiscal conservatism. The National Debt has been Michelle and Ron’s central issue. I really am getting tired of organizations like Media Matters and MoveOn.org,Hollywood and the main stream media attacking women candidates who have contrary views to the Democratic/Socialist/Liberal/Progressive agenda. I am an Independent who is socially liberal and fiscally conservative and I would vote for a candidate like Ron Paul and Michelle Bachman. My cousin is gay and he would also vote for a candidate like Ron Paul and Michelle. Our country is dangerously broke and our Dear President Obama seems to be clueless!!!!!!!

I apologize for getting off Topic regarding Ms. Palin’s income. All I can say is at least she earned her money by not posing nude or using her body like the Kartrashian’s. Her mother should really be encouraging the girl to go to college verses taking the famewhore path to destruction.

  28. Turquoise Blue says:

Between this dolt and all those awful teen pregnancy shows on TV right now, the message is clear: if you’re a teenage girl without a lot of prospects, get pregnant! You will become famous and rich! Is this really the message we want to be sending?

  29. Bodhi says:

Whatever her credentials may be, Michelle Bachman doesn’t know basic US history. She said that Thomas Jefferson & John Adams freed the slaves… And that is enough to scare the hell out of me when it comes to her

  30. Laurie says:

If Bristol was the child of a politically active Democrat….would we hear these same criticisms? My guess is that the rhetoric would be ‘good for her, she turned her life around, great message and inspiration for the youth of today’. Most of the criticism is undoubtedly motivated by a dislike of Sarah Palin.

  31. hoganbcmj says:

“to believe you’re qualified to represent something you’ve publicly failed at”

Absolutely. I can’t believe in the face of this blatant hypocrisy she can still book “speaking gig” on the topic of abstinence. As far as the Dancing With the Stars stint, if they were stupid enough to pay her to be on the show, I don’t blame her one bit for taking the gig.

  32. Solveig says:

That’s a lot of money to spend on gigolos for making up for lost time.

  33. Hakura says:

The national debt is an ever-expanding black hole, yet Bristol Palin is paid money hand over fist to talk about things *SHE* was too stupid to do.

Boy, am I proud to be an American.

  34. Str8Shooter says:

In other news: Keith Richards is going to do a national tour promoting Jusy Say No.

    LOL

  35. melinda says:

So, if you want to make a career out of getting knocked up as a teen, you can expect to make in the mid $200,000’s a year (Teen Mom salary is paying $240,000). Why did I bother using birth control, and go to college? It’s amazing how so much lack of thought can be so rewarding.

  36. ashleighlauren says:

Wow. She made 10x my annual salary because she got knocked up and is willing to be the poster child for abstinence only sex education.

I got a BS, and I work as a social worker. With children who typically were born to teen moms. And I made 27,500 last year (and earned every damn penny).

Does anyone else think that is messed up? Because I have to say, I think it’s a pretty good indicator of how people in the US really feel about poor children in foster care. Because clearly, the people responsible for making sure that they’re okay, should earn 10% of what Bristol Palin made for one job last year.

  37. Iangillan says:

Palin uses her family credentials as political currency which means they’re fair game. If you don’t want the public to critique your kids, don’t shine the spotlight on them. I don’t recall Obama crowing about his kids, ditto Dubya, ditto the Clintons.

  38. Shazza says:

Laurie, if Bristol were the offspring of Democrats-DAMN straight there’d be criticism! What kind of ‘foundation’ pays the ‘celebrity’ face A WHOLE LOT MORE than the cause they’re supposed to supporting? Besides, if she WERE a Democrat, the Republicans would’ve criticized her parents for having a knocked-up daughter, not praising her for being ‘pro-life’. The hypocrisy runs deep. And geez, anyone who thinks Michele Bachmann is worth voting for deserves what they get. And bless you, ashleighlauren, for all that you do. No, Republicans don’t care about poor children unless they’re fetuses.Once they’re born, who cares?

  39. Ally says:

Meanwhile, Candie’s gave only $35,000 to actual teen pregnancy preventions initiatives. They also lost (LOST!) $334,000 on a gala titled Event to Prevent. Egads.

If any one you have been buying these crap plastic shoes, I suggest you boycott them. They’re obviously irresponsible, publicity-desperate morons.

    http://jezebel.com/#!5789121/candies-foundation-pays-bristol-palin-260k-gives-little-to-actual-initiatives

  40. original kate says:

no surprise this little grifter is making a fortune for being an unwed teen mom; after all, that hideous wishnick doll snookie just got $30,000 for speaking at rutgers university. evidently she talked about tanning, her pouf hairstyle, and partying.

i wish i were kidding, but i’m not.

  41. Darla says:

I think this says all their is to say about the abstinence movement and their grasp on what is effective. A brainless ho with a famous mother who probably preached abstinence to her gets knocked up (probably because she did as her mother told her and did not use birth control), and had a baby without benefit of having the father in the childs life, and she’s doing better than any teeneager and most adults could hope to do. Somehow, this is supposed to promote the abstinence movement. And these idiot f–chers want to run the country. Maybe they should appoint Bernie Madoff as as head of the treasury.

I need to go do lots of Yoga now before I freaking slap the plump right out this girl’s cheeks.

  42. garvels says:

Bodhi-and president Obama said there were 57 states and don’t even get me started with Biden. Bottom line-she misspoke and promptly corrected her mistake. I want the candidates and the media to focus on real issues not prepared talking points and gotcha politics.

  43. california angel says:

I think I just died inside a little bit.

  44. Macey says:

I agree with ‘what a rip’, there is some kind of scam here. Someone in her family has something on these ppl if they’re paying her that kind of money while only using a fraction of that for their actual cause. Thats definitely a questionable charity. I hope the ppl that donate to this Candie’s sees those numbers to see exactly where their money is going.

  45. gobo says:

She get’s paid huge amounts of cash for being a hypocrite. FML.

  46. Shannon says:

garvels, Michelle Bachman’s husband is a therapist who specializes in “de-gaying” people, so your gay friend would be a moron to support someone who espouses such offensive views about sexual orientation.

She also supports a dangerous, truth-denying revisionist history of the United States, as someone else has already pointed out. She is convinced that the U.S. is really a Christian nation and denies separation of church and state.

Those ARE real issues. I support gay rights and I am an atheist. I am also a patriotic American and I do not agree with her narrow view of who “real Americans” are.

  47. Darla says:

garvels she just hememd her way through a whole bunch or BS that she got caught on during “Meet the Press” . This woman is a bonafide moron.

  48. garvels says:

@Shannon-I live in Minnesota and I met Michelle Bachman and I was quite impressed with her finance acumen. When I see her again I will most definitely inquire about her husband “de-gaying” people.

Regarding her “truth denying revisionist history”-I really am not following you-She does have a constructionist’s viewpoint when it regards the U.S. constitution.

If your number one issue is gay rights, that’s fine,my number one issue is the state of the U.S. economy. If our country is bankrupt we leave ourselves vulnerable to the countries like China that hold our debt.

@Darla-You need to be specific as to what constitutes a “bonafide moron”.

  49. Dingles says:

So she gets knocked up as a teenager, becomes famous for it because her mother is a right-wing “politician”/reality show star, and now she’s making hundreds of thousands of dollars by telling teens to not have sex. Yep, sounds like America.

  50. Dingles says:

    @ Laurie:

If Bristol was the child of a Democratic politician she’d likely not be in this position in the first place since Democrats generally believe in comprehensive sex education for teens…you know, teaching more information than “Don’t have sex before marriage because it makes Baby Jesus cry.” Also, if she did still get pregnant as a teen she’d probably be educating teens about safe sex rather than preaching abstinence, an ideal she was obviously not able to live up to herself.

  51. kb says:

not that i agree with her making money off of her mother’s notoriety, but i am a single mom too and i can’t imagine if someone offered me a quarter of a million right now that i would turn it down even if people hated me for it. it is hard to raise a child and very expensive.

and i can’t imagine anyone here with a child or not would turn down free money. in this economy we take what we can get. and i don’t blame her one bit.

  52. Alarmjaguar says:

I don’t blame her (well, maybe a little), but I certainly blame the people who are spending that kind of money on her and who keep hiring her! As others have mentioned, there have to be many people out there who are better suited to being spokespeople for the cause!

  53. Hakura says:

I know this has been argued in so many stories it’s insane, but the problem isn’t ‘teaching abstinence’…. It’s when you only teach abstinence.

It’s downright unrealistic to expect teenagers not to have sex. They should be given all the information they need to make an informed decision, & to protect themselves from the consequences sex can bring. Teaching that abstinence is an option is great, but when that’s all you do, you’re depriving these kids of information they need.

Bristol is famous for being a hypocrite. She appears to talk about why teenagers shouldn’t have sex. She stands on that stage in designer clothes, new owner of a huge home, paid exhorbitant amounts of money (all resulting DIRECTLY from her having sex & becoming a teenage mother)… …to tell people not to have sex. Beyond the hypocracy, she’s the WORST example since ‘teen mom’ Amber for why someone shouldn’t get pregnant. She’s just showing them that you can turn it into a payday.

That’s some ‘charity’. WTF is wrong with people… I thought there were people who kept track of what the money earned in a charity was spent on…

  54. Emily says:

@Dingles, I was about to say exactly the same thing!

@Laurie, while I don’t like her mother, I find it despicable that Bristol is making money of being such a hypocrite. If she was out there being a spokesperson for safe sex, or comprehensive sex education, I’d applaud her. But she’s pushing a dangerous ideology that clearly failed where she was concerned, showing both massive hypocrisy and also a complete failure to learn from her own mistakes. And she’s getting paid hundreds of thousands for it! Hell yeah, I’m going to criticise her!

  55. Lina says:

    Very logical America. How intelligent.
Naturally picked to represent something at which you have failed. Logical indeed.

Looks like being homophobic and getting knocked up lands you in cash. I don’t know what I’m doing with my life, should totally be doing that instead.

  56. Sally says:

Spoiled little rich kid. Some have everything and some have nothing. She’s just riding on the coat tail of her mother. She better make it while she can, when moms gone, in all probability she will go to .She isn’t an American Icon. And then again, she could be the greatest person that ever splashed in a mud puddle. Who knows?
